Chapter Two: Hiccup Haddock

Moxie watched the sun rise as she boarded her father's ship. It was very early. She put her luggage belowdeck and watched with excitement as her father raised the sails. This was a true adventure. The salty wind blew across the vast sea as the boat began to move. "Where are we going?" Moxie asked. Her father laughed. "We are going to the legendary Berk!" He said. Moxie squealed with laughter. Berk!? The island best known for it's brave warriors and dragon legends!? Heck yeah. Moxie knew dragons weren't real, but she still liked them.

Her village got farther and farther away, and she bid farewell to her boring life. She grinned. She started daydreaming. Maybe, just maybe, she'd meet a really cute boy. At the thought of this, she giggled. Oh, where was she going with this? Boys, boys, boys, she had to stop thinking about boys.

Moxie must have dozed off, because her father had to wake her up when the ship slid into the dock. It had been two days at sea. Two very boring days. She could hardly wait to get on dry land and explore. She hopped off the boat onto the wooden dock. She helped her father unload his goods and set up his trading market. She was going to stay and help some more, but her father stopped her. "Listen here, Moxie. I don't need any more help around here. Berk is a safe place with people I trust. I want you to go off and make some friends. We'll be coming back in the future." He said. Moxie was just waiting for him to say that. He was a very trusting man, and knew a lot of people in a lot of places. She happily bid him goodbye and skipped off towards the town section of the island.

The road was lined with perfectly identical huts, and farther down larger houses. All the people were friendly and greeted her as she passed. She got distracted looking at a finely decorated shop, and ran into a man carrying a crate of fish. They both stumbled and fell, fish spilling everywhere. "Oh my stars, I'm so sorry!" Moxie exclaimed, a little embarrassed and afraid that the man would be upset. "Oh, no, it's fine, it's totally my fault." Said the man. Moxie looked up at him, gathering spilled fish. He looked like he was in his thirties or twenties, and had a beard, though it wasn't very full. His hair (and beard) was auburn in color, and his eyes are green. He wore the Berkian crest on his shoulder.

"I don't believe I've seen you around here. What's your name?" He asked. Moxie felt like this man had authority around here, so she politely answered. "My name is Moxie. My father is a trader." The man smiled kindly. "Well, Moxie, my name is Hiccup Haddock. I'm the chief of Berk." Moxie gasped. Chief of Berk!? Hiccup chuckled. "Don't worry; I'm not one of those commanding chiefs that acts like a king. You can talk to me." He said. Moxie put the fish she'd picked up back in his crate, which he picked up and set down on a nearby bench. "It's nice to meet you." He added. Moxie suddenly felt shy. "You too." She managed to say. Hiccup extended his hand, and Moxie shook it politely.

"You're new around here?" Hiccup asked. "Uh, yeah. This is the first trip my father has taken me on." Said Moxie. Hiccup smiled. "How old are you?" He prompted. "I turned thirteen about two days ago." Moxie replied. "Well, you seem like a very nice girl. How about you come over to my house this afternoon, and I'll show you around?" Hiccup suggested. Moxie smiled. "Uh, sure, why not?" Hiccup chuckled. "I'll see you, then." He picked up his fish and kept walking. Moxie ran back to the dock to tell her father.
