Chapter Nine: Feelings For A Nightfury

Moxie felt the peaceful breathing of the sleeping Nightfury at her side. This was the first time she'd slept away from her father. She felt safe with Xayli, but she still felt insecure emotionally as her father was miles away, most likely losing sleep over her disappearance. "Can't sleep?" Came a voice. She looked. It was Xayli. "I thought you were asleep." Moxie said simply. Xayli smiled. "But can you sleep or is something bothering you?" He persisted. Moxie sighed. "I can't stop thinking about my father." She said. Xayli made a soft trilling sound. He understood. "Can I tell you something? Something I can trust you to keep secret?" Moxie asked. Xayli sat up. "Of course, anything."

"I'm afraid that my father won't make it."

"What?"

"My mother passed away when I was a babe, and I'm all my father has ever had. If he loses me, I fear he will give up on life and not be able to move on."

Xayli bowed his head. "Oh...." Moxie sighed shakily. "I-I just feel so alone in this..." She whimpered. Xayli put one large, batlike wing over her back. "You are not alone. I will be with you in everything from this point until the end." He cooed in the way dragons do when they're being sober. Moxie was comforted by his words. "I know that I have to go back to him, but...is it okay that I don't want to?" She asked. Xayli was silent for several seconds. "Moxie...there comes a time in everyone's life, even for us dragons, that one must decide to either stay in one place for the sake of family, or move to the place where they are truly happy, where they know they belong. Occasionally, that place is where they've always been, but most times they must venture out from the place they've known all their lives." He said finally. Moxie laid down, letting that sink in. Maybe she could find her father and make sure he knew she was happy, and then he'd be able to live a good life knowing his daughter was alright and she could stay here with all the other dragons. She could stay here with Xayli.

She'd spent so many days dreaming of that perfect boy, with perfect hair, perfect eyes, perfect everything humans think are perfect, and now she'd found someone she was attracted to, and though the feeling was nice, it seemed strange that she'd have feelings for a dragon. Feelings for a creature that just a day ago she was sure didn't exist. She felt Xayli breathing against her neck as he lied down next to her, his wing still over her back. She fell asleep, thinking about what to do.

Astrid carefully examined the claw marks of the dragon that it had left on the dock in it's panicked escape. It looked like it was a Lightfury, just like Hiccup had said. Where it had flown off to was what she had to find out. Because she this dragon was not just a dragon, but a girl that just a day ago had been a bouncy, adventurous redhead who didn't believe in dragons. She sighed. Why had she done that? She stopped running her hand along the splintered wood and started looking for a boat. If one thing was certain, Moxie was now a dragon, and sooner or later would show up at the Hidden World.

The sun slowly rose over the horizon, and Moxie slowly opened her eyes. Xayli was gone. She sat up and looked around frantically. She stood, ready to take off from the cave and search the Hidden World for him, but a second later a black dragon came flying towards her. She used her highly accute sense of smell to recognize him. It was Xayli, and when he landed a dropped a raw fish at her feet. "Thought you might be hungry. I think I'll teach you how to fish today. Then I can show you some skills unique to your species." He said. Moxie smiled, appreciative. "Thank you, Xayli." She said. A light pink hue came from under his ebony scales, barely visible on his cheeks. Moxie could easily tell he was blushing, but didn't say anything. "So...do you have a mate?" She asked tentatively, not wishing to be nosy but just had to know. She nosed at the fish while waiting for Xayli to respond. "Uhm...no. Females don't exactly...think I'm...a good mate... " Moxie heard his voice drop to a sad tone. "I'm sorry. I didn't mean to make you feel bad." She said as she tasted the fish. To her surprise, it was actually pretty good. "Oh no, it's okay. Why did you want to know?" Xayli responded. Moxie froze for a second while she thought about how to respond to that. "Oh...just wondering........." She said quietly, her face turning pink. She avoided eye contact and continued eating. Xayli looked away and smiled to himself.

"You ready to learn how to fish, now?" He asked when Moxie had finished. "Yes." She replied. The two Furies flew out into the Hidden World to find a fishing pool.
