64 - I Never Could Love Like That

"This is nice."

Amelia let out a content sigh after she spoke, as she pulled the towel tightly around her naked form. Damon smiled and pressed a kiss on her temple, wrapping his arms around her waist, and pulling her back against his bare chest as she went to walk toward the mirror. It hadn't taken the pair long to fall back into their old ways, and neither of them showed any dislike to the idea of being back together.

"Do you smell that?" She then asked, picking up a new scent in the air that made her brow furrow. "Is that bacon?"

"Hmm, Mom's cooking." Damon realized, chuckling. "It is either bacon or a baby she abducted from a nearby village."

Frowning at him, she walked forward and started the faucet running. "She can hear us!" She hissed in reminder, giving him a scolding look. "You have to give her a chance, Damon. She's your Mother, and she clearly means a lot to Candice."

"No, she's a tool to get Stefan's humanity back, just like Candice was a tool to get yours back." He corrected, as he pulled the girl back into his arms. "Because there is no doubt Stefan and Caroline are fangs deep in bodies right now. So, the sooner we get our supernatural born killers out of circulation, the better."

Giving him a look, she sighed and pressed a kiss to his cheek, before turning the water off and walking back into the bedroom. She picked up the previous nights clothes from the floor, and dumped them into the laundry basket, before making her way over to the dresser. As she went to open it, she stopped when she heard footsteps coming quickly toward them, Candice soon bounding excitedly into the room.

"Lily made breakfast." She announced to her sister, taking a seat on the edge of Damon's bed. "Are you coming?"

Amelia let out a small giggle, gesturing to the towel that covered her. "Um, we'll be down soon. We kind of need to get dressed."

Candice's eyes widened in realization, looking from her sister to Damon, who leaned in the bathroom doorway and gave her a smirk. Her cheeks heating up, she made her way out of the room without another word, quickly making her way back downstairs.

The second she was out of earshot, Damon gave the eldest Evans girl a look. "We need to invest in a bell for her." He said seriously. "Next time, we not be as... decent."

She rolled her eyes, pulling the top draw of the dresser open. "Let us both invest in a shirt first, then can discuss the bell that we are not buying." She told him with a small smile, her hand barely in the dresser when Damon appeared in front of her, slamming it shut. "Damon, I really need a shirt."

He quickly brushed his actions off, handing her a shirt with a shrug. "As much as I prefer you without one, take mine."

Looking him up and down with a suspicious look, she shrugged and took the shirt from his hands, pulling it over her head and walking away to gran some jeans. As soon as she was out of sight, Damon sighed and pulled the draw open again, pulling out the wooden box he'd hidden among the various pieces of clothing. The red vial sat inside the box, almost mocking him as he stared at it, his mind debating the options this left him with in his head. Biting his lip, he closed the box and hid it once more, plastering a smile on his face before going to join Amelia once again.

Breakfast had an awkward tension in the air, as Damon and Amelia sat on one side of the table, graciously eating what Lily had made them. It took some convincing for Damon to even sit down, but after being reprimanded about making an effort, he went along with Amelia's idea of giving Lily a chance. Candice sat opposite her sister, her eyes staring in wonder at her older sister's phone.

"Oh my..." She squeaked, jumping as it buzzed in her hands.

Amelia bit back a laugh, taking the phone from her. "Hey, it's okay. It's only a message." Candice stared as she tapped at the screen a few times, before handing it back to her. "Here, I've turned the noise off. It shouldn't scare you again."

As Lily joined them at the table, taking her seat beside the youngest Evans girl, she smiled in awe at the two sisters. "This was always Damon's favorite.... eggie in baskie." She told them, making Amelia glance up at her in interest. "You used to always have it when you would spend the night, remember?"

"I do." She nodded, taking a sip of her juice.

"Doesn't taste like I remember it." Damon told his Mother, earning a look from Amelia as he took a bite of his food.

"Well, you were human the last time you tasted it. Our tastes change over time." Lily said with a smile, not picking up on his hostility. She looked the human's Evans girl, who'd put the phone down to concentrate on her food, and stroked a strand of stray hair behind her ear. "I used to make this for Candice whenever I could on our travels. It became her favorite too, over time." Her eyes then fell onto Amelia once more. "So, Amelia, you've been a vampire as long as Damon, right?"

"Um, just about." She nodded after a moment pause. "I turned a few months after he and Stefan did."

"You ever miss it?" She then asked, catching the girl off guard with the question. "Being human?"

"I guess..." She shrugged, pushing the food around her plate. "But, I'm happy as I am now. I like being a vampire."

"Because of the powers it gives you, right?" Candice asked, looking up at her sister in interest, her eyes filled with curiosity. "The speed, the strength, the ability to heal the sick and injured. It must be amazing, from what I've seen Lily and our friends do."

Before Amelia could answer her, Lily had rose to her feet once again. "If I understood correctly, in order to free our companions from that place where we were trapped, we'll need the magical device." She spoke what she had worked out, Candice's words about her friends bringing her mind onto the topic.

"The ascendant." Damon corrected with a fake smile.

"Yes. The ascendant." She repeated, slowly nodding he head. "Where is it?"

The couple exchanged a small glanced, before Damon cleared his throat awkwardly. "Safe. Very safe."

"And we'll also need a celestial event." She said, leaning against the counter as she poured herself a glass of juice.

Damon rose a brow at his Mother, nodding once again. "We'll have to do some digging, yeah. Be patient, they take time. They're very rare."

"There's a full moon coming up. Will that work? If not, the Lyrids meteor shower is in two weeks." She offered, making the other two vampires look at her in surprise.

"Well, look at you. If you're not a one-woman "Farmer's Almanac" The raven haired Salvatore said, sarcasm dripping from his tone.

"Actually, I took your advice, and I've been dabbling on Stefan's computer." She told them in explanation. "Candice has been with me using it since we woke this morning. What a wondrous invention... All that knowledge."

"And videos of cats riding robot vacuum cleaners."

"Oh, those were hilarious." Candice burst out with a bright grin, earning a snort from the male Salvatore.

Smacking his arm, Amelia shot her sister a smile. "Ignore him, Candice. I'll show you some funnier ones later, if you like?" She offered, earning an immediate nod of enthuasiam from the girl.

Suddenly, the door opened to reveal Elena, who froze when she  Lily and Candice looked at her. She's only seen the pair briefly when they got back from 1903, and had yet to properly introduce herself. Smiling at them awkwardly, she set her eyes on Amelia and Damon, who were beyond amused at her.

"Everything Okay?" Damon smirked at her, earning a eye roll from the Gilbert girl.

She simply held up her phone. "It's Jo. Someone's been attacking people at Whitmore" She said, making realization quickly sink in for the couple.

"Let me guess... One of them's blonde, and the other one liked turning people into human pez dispensers." He sighed, as Elena gave a nod.

"That's exactly what I'm gonna find out, but I think so." She told them.

"Great." Amelia nodded, rubbing her face with her hands. "Well, I'll go play double agent, shall I? Stefan and Caroline have no idea my I've turned my emotions back on. I'll go find them, keep an eye on them, and let you guys know what's going on." She suggested, as she got to her feet. As Candice opened her mouth to speak, she quickly cut her off. "No, you aren't coming. It's too dangerous."

"Exactly why you need to be careful." Damon warned her in serious voice. "I they find out you're lying..."

"Hey, I can do this." She assured him, pressing a kiss on his cheek before smiling at Lily. "Thank you so much for breakfast." She said, giving Candice a quick hug before heading out with Elena, leaving Damon alone with the Lily and Candice.

*****

The Skrull bar was like a scene from a horror movie, at least it was in Amelia's eyes, as she walked through the main entrance. It wasn't hard to track down Stefan and Caroline, given she didn't need to. To her surprise, the pair had been the ones that messaged her that morning, sending her their location. A blank expression on her face, she looked around at the bar full of students that just stared at the stage, where Caroline was singing karaoke and dancing along without a care.

Stefan was sat at a table with a student, a blood stained pocket knife in his hand, and the girls bleeding wrist being held over a coffee mug.

"What happened to discreet?" She asked as she walked toward him.

He merely gave her a look of surprise. "I was beginning to think my brother had locked you in the basement."

"Oh please." She scoffed, perching on the edge of the table. "Like I would let your brother get me so easily. Give me more credit, Stefan."

"Where have you been then?" He questioned, leaning forward in his seat. He eyed the girl in interested,  but she kept composure under his gaze. "I mean, if Damon didn't take you to flip your switch back on. You just disappeared yesterday."

The corner of her lips twitched into a smirk, as she walked around and stood behind his chair, wrapping her arms around his shoulder. "Why?" She asked in his ear, resting her head on his shoulder. "Did you miss me, Stefanie?" Giggling slightly as she pulled away, she pulled the knife from his hand, and licked the blood that dripped from the blade. "O Neg. Nice."

Taking the blade from her hand, he went back to focusing on Caroline's music, no longer questioning the Evans girl. A small sense of relief washing over her, the girl sat on a table that some of the compelled audience were gathered around, watching the blonde like nothing was wrong.

"Hit me with your best shot." Caroline sang to her hearts content, paying no attention when the back door opened, and two people walked inside. "Why don't you hit me with your best shot? Come on, hit me with your best shot. Fire away-ay."

Tyler and Matt froze in their tracks, as they looked around at the scene before them. "What did we just walk into?" The Lockwood boy asked warily.

"Oh, look, it's the police officers in training." Stefan said, turning to face them in his seat. Ignoring the worry forming in the pit of her stomach, Amelia strolled over to Stefan once again, looking at the two boys with no clear expression.

"Ooh, are you here to arrest us?" Amelia laughed teasingly, circling around them slowly. She wrapped a arm around Matt's shoulder. "You never, I've never been with a guy in a uniform." She whispered in his ear, unable to stop herself laughing as she pulled away.

"You can go now." Stefan compels the girl he was bleeding, who stared at him for a moment in complete horror, before grabbing her bleeding wrist and quickly running out of the building. Shrugging unfazed, Stefan simply drank the blood in the mug, offering the remaining sip to Amelia as she took the girls seat.

"What the hell are you doing?" Tyler demanded, as Amelia downed the remaining drop, licking her lips hungrily.

"We're just enjoying the music." The youngest Salvatore defended himself. "You guys want next song?"

Amelia looked between the pair, discreetly sending the a look to run before she spoke, beginning to pout. "Oh, I don't think they want to join the party, Stef."

Having vaguely noticed the Evans girl warning, Matt glanced at Tyler beside him. "We should get out of here." He stated, but before the pair could turn to leave the way they entered, Stefan sped and cut off their path.

"No, stay, Caroline's taking requests." Stefan told them with a devilish smirk, as the pairs faces filled with nerves and worry, though still managed to glare at the Salvatore despite it all.

Amelia cursed silently in her head, keeping up her facade despite it all. She perched back on the edge of the table, giggling in a excited manner as she glanced to Caroline on stage, then back to the Lockwood and Donovan boys.

*******

As Caroline sung song after song, Amelia sat on the bar with a bottle of bourbon in hand, carefully watching at Matt and Tyler watched her perform. So far, they were just be used to replace the compelled audience Stefan had for some reason let go, and had then disappeared to go find himself someone to feed on. The Evans girl had no chance to get of Damon or Elena yet with what was going on, so she could only hope they figure out where they were soon.

"Look." Tyler began, as Caroline finished another song. "We listened to you sing, we clapped our hands. Can we go now?"

Amelia instantly picked up on his annoyed tone, tutting. "Now, now, Ty. Let's not be rude." She scolded.

Looking between the two boys, Caroline smirked as an idea came to mind. "Let's play Caroline Trivia."

"I don't even know what that is." Tyler sighed.

"Oh, sure you do!" The blonde brushed off, as jumped off stage and made herself comfortable on a couch. "You both dated me, whihc means you should know everything about me, so I'm gonna ask you some questions about myself, and whoever answers them right lives."

Matt frowned, noticing the twisted smiles he wore. "You're sick."

"Ah, come on, Matt." Amelia began, waling up behind them and wrapping her arms around their shoulder. "As two of her ex boyfriends, this should be easy. Unless you were a terrible boyfriend, you have nothing to fear." She told them, emphasizing the word nothing in hopes they'd pick up on it.

"When is my birthday?" The Forbes asked first, her eyes glancing between them before settling on one. "Tyler?"

With a begrudging sigh, he answered. "October 10th."

"Very good." She nodded. "Alright, Matt, your turn. What is my favorite color?"

"That's a trick question." He spoke with an unsteady frown. "You don't have a favorite color."

Silence lingered in air, making the tension thicken before she laughed. "Correct!" She cheered. "Okay, now a tiebreaker. Whoever answers first wins. What was my Mom's final memory before she died?"

Amelia watched as the color left both boys faces, a mixture of anger and frustration growing in them both. She knew the blonde had asked an impossible last question, knowing very well she was setting them both up to fail. Amelia didn't even know what Liz had seen as her final memory.

"How would we even begin to know that?" Tyler snapped at her furious.

"Oh, I'm sure I mentioned it." She said as she leaned forward.

Matt shook his head desperately. "No, you didn't."

"Come on. Tick tock, tick tock." She shrugs, rising to her feet. "Judges are waiting for the final answer. What was my Mom's final memory before she kicked the bucket." She said without a second thought.

"Do you need to call a friend?" Amelia asked with a sarcastic smirk, as she went and stood at Caroline's side.

Before either could say anything, the back door of the bar opened, and Stefan wandered back inside. Both girls looked unfazed b the blood dribbling down his cheek, that he was wiping away with the pad of his thumb. "Well, looks like, uh, Whitmore's gonna need a new philosophy T.A." He then looked directly at the blonde, having overheard the game. "Your Mom was teaching you to ride a bike."

"Bingo." Caroline said with an excited smile, as both boys look fearful for what would come next. "And Stefan wins, which means you two lose, which isn't actually that bad because it just means we get to kill you both."

Amelia attempted to keep up her facade at the boys were sat at a table, Caroline striding toward them with a coin in hand. They were using a coin to decide who would die first, keeping this a game with no happy ending. Flipping the coin a final time, she looks toward Stefan and Amelia who watched quietly.

"Heads, I kill Tyler, and tails, I kill Matt. Deal?" She asked them.

"Sounds good to us." Stefan nodded, as he played with the pocket knife in his hand.

"Perfect." Amelia said with as much enthusiasm as she could muster.

Covering the result with her spare hand, Caroline leaned forward to hem slowly, teasingly beginning the big reveal. Rage overtaking him, Tyler snapped and smacked the coin from her hand with no fear, leaving her staring at him surprised.

"Ooh!" Stefan said amused. "Looks like someone's angry."

The Forbes vampire rolled her eyes, walking toward the Salvatore and Evans girl. "He's a wolf. It's his resting face."

"You wonder why everyone hates vampires?" Tyler asked them, still furious as they look at him for his answer. "Look at you, messing with people for no reason. That's really brave."

"This coming from the ex hybrid." Amelia snorted. "Didn't you used to be as bad as when sired to Klaus, Tyler? I mean, from what I've heard, you used to be a bit of a dick."

His anger controlling his actions once again, Tyler got to his feet and picked up his chair, smashing it to pieces against the table. Taking the biggest part, he flung at the table Stefan and Amelia sat at, before grabbing a smaller piece and using it as a makeshift stake. As Stefan and Caroline laughed even more amused, Amelia couldn't hide the fear growing inside her, and Matt looked just as horrified.

"What are you dong?" Matt shouted at his friend, jumping to his feet.

Stefan merely chuckled. "Are you serious?"

"What's wrong, Stefan?" Tyler snarled back. "Not used to people fighting back?"

"No, actually, I'm just not used to people being this stupid." He replied with a rose brow.

"Alright, Ty stop. He will kill you." Matt intervened, trying to play mediator between the three vampires and untriggered werewolf. He looked at the youngest Salvatore. "Stefan, he's sorry." He told him, as Caroline giggled at the scene happening around them.

"Hah, hah. See that little vein in his forehead?" Caroline asked her two fellow vampires, as she stood directly in front of Tyler. "I used to think it was so sexy, but now I'm pretty sure it's just all the blood leaving his brain." She mocked.

"Screw you, Caroline." The Lockwood sneered, before pointing the stake at them threateningly. "Come on. Any of you, come at me." He bated bravely, looking between the three of them with no fear in his eyes.

"Ty, stop!" Matt shouted desperately.

"Hey, Caroline." Stefan began, keeping his eyes locked onto Tyler. "I will gladly kill him for you, but I know how much of a jerk he was during your relationship, so if you want..."

She cut him off, holding up her hand. "I want." She told him, crossing her arms over her chest. "Come on, Tyler, I dare you."

"Ty, stop." Matt told him in a anxious tone. "She will kill you."

"Get out of here, Matt." With that said, he lunged forward, the stake aimed at her chest. Speeding out of his way, Caroline grabbed Matt and held him in front of her, Tyler unable to stop as she stake plunged into his best friends stomach.

"MATT!" Amelia yelled in fear, her entire act crumbling instantly.

"Nice going, Tyler." Caroline congratulated, as she and Stefan laughed, while Matt stood sputtering and gasping in pain. She then spun on her heel to face Amelia, while Tyler stared at his best friend, utterly frozen. "I should of known it wouldn't take Damon long to flip your switch back on. Props to you for your acting though, I never suspected a thing till now."

Biting her tongue, Amelia said nothing and went to rush to Matt's side, biting into her wrist to feed him her blood. Rolling his eyes, Stefan flung and pocket knife so it stabbed her in the back, making her fall with a gasp of pain before she could reach the boy. Groaning in pain, she slowly turned her head to face them, glaring as they smirked at her.

******

"I'm sorry, Matt. Come on. Don't die on me man."

Matt was propped up against the back of a chair, as Tyler sat beside him on his knees, desperately trying to stop the bleeding. Amelia laid on the floor, weakly pressing her hands flat against the floor, trying to sit herself up. The knife still lodged in her back, there wasn't much she could do, it placed just out of her reach as she tried to grab it.

"So, for those of us keeping score." Caroline began, she and Stefan now sat at the bar, watching the three. "If Matt dies, are you gonna start peeing on fire hydrants again?" She asked, looking over at Tyler.

"Ooh, that's a very good question." Stefan nodded. "I mean, if all that rage made you think you could take us both, maybe this is nature's way of reconnecting you with your true self."

"Shut up!" Tyler shouted at them.

Before more could be said, the main entrance door opened, and whoever walked in made Stefan rise to his feet. It wasn't long till Amelia knew herself, as Damon was straight at her side, pulling out the knife and helping her to her feet again. She looked to see Lily stood a few feet behind them, looking directly over at her youngest son. Feeling herself healing, Amelia grabbed Damon's car keys from his pocket, and tossed them to Tyler.

"Get him to the medical center." She told him. "Jo and Elena should be there."

Damon nodded as Tyler helped Matt up. "Get him out of here."

"Come on, man." Tyler said, staggering as he helped Matt out of the bar, leaving behind the group of vampires in the bar.

"So... you have a Mother." Caroline asked, as she got to her feet.

"I had a Mom." Stefan corrected her, not taking his eyes off of Lily. "She died, so whoever this is, is Damon's lame attempt to get my humanity back."

"Let me guess, then you get my humanity back?" Caroline fit the pieces together with ease, before frowning. "I don't think so." Grabbing a piece of broken chair, she stabbed Stefan in the back with it, before speeding toward the main exit and pausing. ""Sorry, Stefan, but thanks for the head start."

With that, she fled the scene at vampire speed, as Stefan laid on the floor groaning in pain. Looking at Damon, Amelia ran after her, getting outside to see the blonde gone without a trace. Sighing in frustration, the girl looked around the campus with false hope, running her hand through her hair.

"Amy!" A voice called, and she blinked in surprise as a figure barreled into her.

"Candice, what are you doing here?" She asked, pulling away and holding her sister by the arms, looking at her with a stern expression. "You should be at home, where it's safe."

The youngest Evans sister looked down sheepishly. "Lily said it was fine if I came." She argued back, and Amelia did her best not to say anything at that. "I wanted to see if you were okay, and I wanted to see Stefan again. Where is he?"

Saying nothing more, Amelia simply wrapped her younger sister into another hug, and Candice hugged back with no hesitation. It had been a long day, and after everything she'd witnessed, a hug from her sister was exactly what she needed.

******

Night fell on the campus soon, and Amelia sat on a wall on her own, staring blankly into space. Spotting her, Damon walked over with a small smile, taking a seat on the empty space beside her.

"Well, Matt lives to hate vampires another day, Stefan's on Caroline duty, and I just introduced my Mom and your sister to uber. Taking bets on which one goes south first." He joked lightly, and she gave a small smile.

"At this point, I wouldn't be surprised if they all went south at the same time." She answered, taking a small stone and throwing off the wall. "I heard from Elena that Jo's pregnant.  I think I just got roped into helping plan the baby shower."

Damon blinked at her words, a little confused. "Forgot to hit your turn signal for that segueway."

"Jo's pregnancy is probably the best news we've gotten in a while." She shrugged lightly. "I'm trying to celebrate the positives we get, otherwise, we are just going to end up drowning in the negatives." With that said, she held up her phone, which was open on missed messages from the elder Salvatore. "What's this you sent me about Lily? She actually told you she doesn't love you?"

"Well, she did it in her over proper way, but, yeah. That was the gist of it." He nodded, trying to hide his saddened expression. "But, it's fine. I don't plan on honoring my end of the plan to jail break her friends, so I'd say we're even." He shrugged in attempt to hide his feelings.

"Damon." She sighed, giving him a look.

"Nah, it's fine. 150 years is a long time to care." He told her.

"I know for a fact you spent an century and a half pining for Katherine." She shot back at him, making him roll his eyes. "And, a part of me hopes you didn't stop caring about me over those 100 odd years." She added, to which he gave her a look that made her laugh. "Damon, it's okay to be hurt by this. She was the second woman to abandon you. Third, if you count me."

"You never have." He corrected her, shaking his head. "I abandoned you after I turned, if anything."

Sighing once more, Amelia rested her head on his shoulder, wrapping her arms around him. "If we were human, our lives could of been so much simpler." She muttered, staring up at the night sky. "Jo and Ric's kid is going to get that life."

Her words made him raise a brow, thoughts of what remained hidden in his bedroom coming to mind. "Jealous?"

"What? Of her pregnancy?" She asked, tilting her head to look him in the eyes. "I mean, I'm not going to say I wouldn't love to have a family, Damon. But, I can't, and that can't be changed. I've got you, I've got Candice. We've got eternity ahead of us. And I''m okay with that. I meant what I said to Lily this morning. I'm okay with being a vampire."

"What if everything could change?" He asked as she closed her eyes, letting out a content hum.

"They can't be though." She answered. "I'm not going to dwell on what could be, or what could of been. I'd rather just live in the moment, and get on with my life, and enjoy what I do have."

Considering her words, Damon rested his head on top of hers, pressing a soft kiss on her forehead. "I love you."

She smiled softly, moving herself closer to him. "I love you too."
