Chapter 8 - Thomas
There was a deafening silence in the cabin. A realization that made it hard to breathe.
There was a cycle to Lucifer's killing, and it had just ended.
Had it been this cold all night?
"Yet again people are disappearing," Luna broke the silence. "But it isn't too late, Mykayla's gift gave us a head start. She has been working on a solution her whole life. She's got some nasty tricks up her sleeve."
"Why haven't you stopped him already?" Thomas's voice wavered.
"I might know how to stop him, doesn't mean I know where he is. It's not like there are travel maps pointing me in his direction," Mykayla bit back.
Before, he thought that he would be brave enough. He believed that he could be the hero of this story, but now ... now, everything inside of him wanted to run. Far, far away from this devil and his skeleton army. The cold feeling of fear and nervousness was spreading through his body.
He was on the point of doing something so completely unlike him. His heart bounced inside his chest and his hands were in cold sweat. Could he really turn his back towards this apparent threat?
Life wasn't as perfect and beautiful as he always believed it to be. Otherwise his Esmeralda wouldn't have died the way she did, and neither would those people be kidnapped and killed. He had always run from conflict, ignoring the mistakes in life because he didn't want to see it. What if that was a mistake that cost him his love? What if he couldn't run away from this thing they were facing?
An inner sigh echoed through his head. If he was being completely honest with himself, he had always known it was the coward's way out. It hadn't mattered to him back then, he was happy and other people made sure that the broken peace was restored. He didn't need to change his ways. But now, could he really let these two girls fight this devil alone?
The answer to that question was clear as day: no, he couldn't. His fear of this unknown and this danger might be strong, but he couldn't let them die. That protective instinct was stronger than his fear. He would never be able to live with himself if something happened to both of them when he knew he might've been able to prevent it. His fear had to suck it up and come back later, he didn't have time for it right now.
"How are you planning to stop him?"
He was getting better at brushing off the older girl's comments. And, it left him feeling more heroic than he probably was. He had managed to brush off his fear. He had made a decision that went against his very nature and he was quite proud of himself.
"I have a plan, don't worry. Our focus must now be on capturing the ghost and getting some answers out of him."
In shock, Thomas snapped his head in the brunette's direction, his eyes huge.
"Excuse me? What? How exactly are you planning to get answers out of him?"
His voice was friendly, but inside he had turned cold. His feelings of heroism were disappearing behind the clouds of fear that were materializing in his mind. He had a feeling that the brunette's ways weren't very ethical.
"Relax, you don't need to be here if you don't want to. Although, maybe you might get a bit more of a backbone," the last quietly mumbled to no one in particular.
"I'm not letting you torture anyone."
Thomas looked at Luna for support, but the youngest Devon avoided eye contact. Were they really planning on hurting a man, just to get answers out of him?
"You don't really have a say in the matter. If this might prevent the destruction from Home and maybe even the world, you're not going to stop me. I'm getting those answers out of that rat's filthy mouth no matter what."
Mykayla's tense eye contact and aggressive posture made Thomas stay in place. It might be against his every principle, but he was not going to be the one to tell Mykayla that it was wrong what she was planning to do.
"So how do we catch our kidnapper?" Luna sounded tired, a yawn proving the assumption correct.
"Well, I think the easiest way-," her sister began.
Riiiing
All eyes turned towards the light source. Luna, now more awake than before, leaned forward to look at the screen. Thomas grabbed his phone with a questioning look. Who would call him at this time of day?
3 AM. Mario calling. His screen read.
Thomas picked up, still very confused why his best friend would call him this early in the morning. Did something happen?
"Hello?" He spoke into his smartphone's microphone. The screen was still tilted to the ceiling, keeping all three of them in the same light glow. Both sisters could easily follow the conversation, even though the speaker wasn't even on.
"Thomas? Where are you?" Mario's voice echoed inside the silent cabin.
"At home, in bed," he lied. Luckily Mario couldn't see the Latino; he wasn't a great liar. Mostly, because he hated the guilt that went with it. "Why are you calling at this hour?"
There wasn't any response on the other end, all that could be heard were a few voices in the background. Then Mario's low voice was back at the speaker: "Perry Hamilton is missing."
It was as if all the oxygen had been removed from the air. The three youngsters looked at each other, every single one of them thinking the exact same thing. The pool of fear grew even bigger inside their chests.
"You didn't open the door when I rang the bell, I wanted to make sure you were alright," Mario's rough voice sounded cold. It must've been a long night already for the police officer.
"I'm on my way to the police station." He mumbled quickly, before Thomas pushed the red button, ending the call.
No one moved.
Eventually, the farmer broke the silence: "I'll go figure out what the police found out, maybe that'll give us a lead."
Mykayla angrily punched her mattress. "Damnit!"
She hit it again, and then again, and again.
A hand reached towards her shoulder. The tension in the older girl visibly calmed down. Mykayla's arms dropped down, as did her head. Silent words were being whispered in her ear by Luna. Thomas's heart clenched, he almost wanted to hug the oldest Devon sister, and he would have if it wasn't for the fact that he was afraid to have a dislocated shoulder afterwards.
"Myka, we can't get emotional now. We need to turn this into our advantage," Luna's voice was a bit louder now, but still as soft as satin. Her hand rubbed softly along her sister's arm.
"When did you become my rock?" The brunette jokingly scoffed. She smiled thankfully at her sister, although her fists were still clenched in her lap.
"I've always been your rock, you were just too stubborn to notice," Luna winked. Their little scoffs broke the heavy atmosphere.
"Pipsqueak is right, we need to see this as an opportunity." Mykayla sat up straighter.
Just like Thomas had done with himself only minutes earlier, Mykayla shook off her fear and focused on the problem at hand. Perhaps, they weren't so very different after all.
"It couldn't have been long since the kidnapping, which means we might actually have a chance. Thomas, you go to the police station and try to find as much information as you can. We," she moved her finger between Luna and herself, "are going to search the woods."
Mykayla looked stronger again, now that she had a clear goal before her. Thomas's lips curled up, and nodded at her command.
Carefully Luna put her slightly shaking hand in the air. The guilty smile that covered her face made her look even younger. "Actually, I hoped to quickly pick up some clothes at Ness's place now that the town is still asleep."
As quickly as she came, the nice and organized Mykayla disappeared. "Are you serious? You're worried about your clothes?" Mykayla's self-control was faltering.
"I know it isn't important to you, and okay, I agree this isn't the perfect time, but fighting evil might require some easier clothes to move in and yours are all too big."
Luna kept calm. Thomas wondered if that was because she understood her sister's reaction or because she was used to Mykayla's emotional whiplashes. Mykayla wasn't wrong. Thomas agreed that this was really not the time to think about clothes. Luna wasn't stupid either. He had given her enough tutoring sessions to know that with certainty. So he wondered why Luna would risk everything for a pair of clothes.
"I was going to do it yesterday, but Thomas saw me which kind of changed my plans quite drastically." Luna sounded young and fragile.
Thomas had expected they would've argued, but Mykayla seemed to retreat at Luna's fragile state. Instead of arguing, she simply shook her head and sighed for the umptieth time that night.
"Okay, fine. I'll search the woods alone and you," she pointed at her sister threatening, "stay in the shadows!"
