Chapter 4

Katniss P.O.V.

"Are you okay?" Peeta asks as he sits down next to me on the hovercraft.

"Yeah," I reply as I slip my hand into his. "Are you?" He nods his head. "Great way to spend our anniversary huh? In a hovercraft on our way to the hospital because of a car wreck."

Peeta looks at the floor and smiles. "It is pathetic, isn't it?" he asks as he reaches his arm up and gently puts it around my shoulder, careful not to hurt my neck. "But, it's like I said this morning, as long as I get to spend every second today with you."

"You're right," I say as I start smiling. "But still, I wish this day could've gone better."

"Yeah," Peeta replies. "I'm just glad that you're safe. When the car stopped and I looked over at you and said your name but didn't get an answer, I thought for sure you were..." Peeta stops for a moment to blink back tears.

"Shh, it's okay. We're both alive," I say as I slowly wrap my arms around Peeta's neck. "I'm not going to leave you," I whisper.

"I'm not leaving you either," Peeta says as he holds me tight. We sit there close to each other until we finally land in the Capitol. The second me and Peeta step off the hovercraft, we are escorted to the hospital and taken to separate rooms. So much for spending ever second of today together.

After the doctors get me back to a room, they run a million different tests on me before they finally determine that I just have sore muscles and need to be prescribed pain killers.

When I finally get to leave the room, I find Peeta sitting in the waiting room. I stop in my tracks when I notice the bandages loosely wrapped around Peeta's right arm. His arm is in a sling and eve through his shirt I can see the outline of the bandages on his chest.

"How is it that all I needed was painkillers, but you had to be wrapped up and you still got out before me?" At the sound of my voice, Peeta lifts his head to look at me. He smiles and gets put I walk over to me.

"I just now sit down," Peeta say as he puts his left arm around my shoulder. "So I didn't beat you by much." I laugh a little as we walk out of the hospital. We walk home since our house is literally ten feet away from the hospital.

When we get home, I go upstairs and put my bottle of pills in the medicine cabinet in our bathroom. I go back downstairs to find Peeta trying to get comfortable with his arm.

"What medicines did they give you?" I tease Peeta as I help him position his pillows right.

"None," Peeta says. I can tell by his tone that he's boasting about him not having to take medicine when I do. I sit down next to him on his left, and he gently puts his arm around me.

"You can take my pain killers for me," I say sweetly. Peeta chuckles as I lay my head on his chest.

"No thanks," Peeta replies.

"I mean it," I say.

"I know you do," Peeta teases. "Trust me, I hate taking medicine just as much as you do."

"I just don't think it's fair that I get some and you don't," I say as we both start laughing. "This isn't how I imagined this day going," I say after a few quiet seconds.

"Then it wasn't supposed to go the way that you imagined it," Peeta replies softly.

"I guess not," I say with a sigh. "Still, I wish it had went a lot smoother."

"Me too," Peeta says as he kisses the top of my head. "But it didn't. Hopefully tomorrow will go better."

"Yeah," I yawn.

"Why don't you try to take a little nap?" Peeta asks. "You look exhausted." I barely nod my head before I give into the sleepy feeling that is now washing over me.

There have been many times that I have regretted sleeping. This nap was no exception. I wake up feeling more drained than I did when I went to sleep because of the horrible nightmares.

They all had to do with the different possible outcomes of today's events. Most of them ended with Peeta worse off than he is. I finally wake myself up by screaming and thrashing around.

"Hey, hey, hey!" Peeta says quickly as he tries to hold my arms back as much as he can with just one hand. "It's okay. You were asleep. It was just a nightmare," he soothes as he strokes my arm. I finally calm down and relax. I lay my head back down on Peeta's shoulder and take a deep breath.

My heart starts beating at it's normal pace, and that's when I realize the throbbing in my neck.

"Are you okay?" Peeta asks as he rests his chin on the top of my head.

"I just jarred my neck a little," I reply. Peeta stands up. "It's okay. I promise," I say, knowing what Peeta's doing.

"Katniss, I'm going to go get your medicine and you are going to take it," Peeta says as he starts to walk up the steps. I groan and lay my head back against the couch.

In just a few minutes, Peeta comes back carrying a pill and a glass of water. I reluctantly swallow the pill as Peeta sits back down and gets comfortable again.

"See, that wasn't that bad was it?" Peeta teases as he wraps his arm back around my shoulder.

"Easy for you to say," I mumble. "you know that you owe me a trip to District 12 now don't you?" I ask Peeta as I smile up at him sweetly.

"I suppose I could do that for you," Peeta replies. "When we do go, you want to take the car or train?"

"Train!" I answer quickly. Peeta chuckles as he kisses the top of my head.

"Katniss?" Peeta says.

"Yeah?" I reply.

"Do you think you're up to telling me what your nightmare was about?" Peeta asks. I take a deep breath and nod my head.

"We were on the train headed to District 12 when the train stopped. Someone got on the train and they were acting weird. When they saw you, they pulled out a gun and...and..." I can't finish my sentence before the tears start. Peeta notices and pulls me closer to him. "I'm tired of these nightmares Peeta. I just want them to stop," I sob.

"I know," Peeta says as he runs his hand up and down my arm. "I wish there was something I could do to take them away from you," he whispers.

"I know you do," I say. "But that's not possible."

"I know it's not," Peeta says sadly. "I just hate it when something's bothering you and I can't so anything about it."

"Peeta, you can't fix everything," I say softly, "I know that. But you always fix the important things. There's some things that just can't be fixed." Peeta looks at me and smiles.

"I know," he says. "It just bothers me when there's a problem I can't fix."

"Well don't worry about it," I say. "Some problems just don't need to be fixed." Peeta looks at me and shakes his head.

"You're a piece of work," Peeta teases"

"True, but I'm your piece of work," I say. Peeta chuckles.

"I don't know how I got so lucky." he says as he kisses the top of my head. I let out a small laugh that quickly turns into a yawn. "Someone's sleepy," Peeta chuckles. I nod my head. "You want to go upstairs?"

"No," I say. "I'm comfortable right where I'm at." Peeta tilts my chin up and kisses me.

"Happy anniversary Katniss," Peeta whispers.

"Happy anniversary Peeta," I reply just seconds before I fall into a peaceful sleep.
