Chapter 22

Katniss P.O.V.

"What time is it?" I ask tiredly.

"Two," Peeta replies, not sounding much more awake than me.

I groan. "In the morning?" I ask. Peeta chuckles.

"Yes, in the morning." I go to sit up, but my neck's stiff from where I was leaning over so long. I start to rub it, but Peeta pulls my hand away and replaces it with his.

"Thank you," I say. Peeta leans over and kisses my temple.

"Are you okay?" he asks.

"Yeah," I sigh as I sit up a little straighter. Peeta's hand slides from my neck to my shoulder. "It's just, the last time I saw her she was limp and unresponsive.  I'm more than ready to see her active and moving around again."

"I know," Peeta says. "But we still have to wait awhile before we can see her. So for now, why don't you just try to sleep?"

"I can't get comfortable, " I mumble.

"Why don't you go lay down on the couch?" Peeta asks as he points to the couch sitting on the other side of the room. I shake my head. "Come here then," he says as he pats his leg with his hand.

I get up out of my seat and sit down in Peeta's lap. I wrap my arms around his neck and his wrap around my waist. I rest my head over on his shoulder and close my eyes.

"Is that better?" he asks.

"Much," I reply. Something's up with him. He's not really acting weird or anything, but I ccan sense it. Something's definitely bothering him. I give him a worried look. He's not facing me,  but I know he can see me out of the corner of his eye. "Peeta, what's wrong?" I ask. He shakes his head.

"Nothing," he replies.

"Peeta, we've been married almost five years. I know you better than that. Now what's wrong?"

He looks at me and sighs. "I feel bad for not being there with you when it happened," he says.

"Peeta, you didn't know anything was going to go wrong. None of us did," I say. "Don't feel bad. Haymitch was there with me."

"And Im thankful for that, but that's not the point, Katniss," Peeta says. "I should've been there. I'm your husband and Willow's daddy." He shakes his head. "I don't think this whole bakery thing is such a good idea."

"Peeta, it's only been one day."

"Yeah, and look at what happened. "

"Peeta, it's okay," I say truthfully. "Its fine, I promise."

He sighs. "I just feel bad for you because you were alone when it happened."

"I told you, I wasn't by myself. Haymitch was there."

"You know what I mean," he says. "Just try to sleep, we'll talk about this later."

"There's nothing to talk about," I say.

"Katniss..."

"I silence him with a kiss. "I think my stubbornness is rubbing off on you, and it's getting really annoying," I say. Peeta chuckles.  "Don't worry about it," I say. "Okay?"

"Okay," he replies. I lay my head back over on his shoulder and close my eyes again.

I wake up screaming. I'm still in the waiting room, but instead of being on Peeta's lap, I'm laying on the couch. Peeta's coming in the door and he rushes over to me.

"Shh. It's okay," he says as he wraps his arms around me. I take a deep breath.

"I'm okay," I say. "It wasn't that bad."

"Here," he says as he hands me a cup. "I brought you some coffee."

"Thank you," I say as I take a sip.

"I talked to one of the doctors out in the hallway," Peeta says. "We can go see Willow, but she's in the nursery."

"So we can only see her through the glass?" I ask. Peeta nods his head. "That's better than nothing. Can we go now?" Peeta chuckles.

"How'd I know you'd ask that?" he asks. I smile at him. We get up and walk down the hallway to the nursery.

I want to cry when I see her. She has an IV in her arm and it breaks my heart. At least she's moving a little.

Peeta sets a hand on my shoulder. "She's our little fighter," Peeta says. I nod my head.

"I wish we could take her back home now," I say.

"Hopefully tomorrow," Peeta says. "At least that's what the doctor said. She stayed responsive all night, so she's doing better than they expected."

"I want to hold her," I say.

"I know," Peeta says. "Hopefully tomorrow."

The rest of the day drags by, followed by a sleepless night. By the time morning comes, Peeta and I are standing outside the door to the nursery waiting on our baby girl. A nurse brings her out and hands her to me. A huge smile spreads across my face.

"Hi baby girl," I say as her eyes open and she looks up at me. We walk her out to the car and I lay her down in her car seat. I sit down in the passengers seat and Peeta takes off driving towards home.

"She sure is quiet," I say after a few minutes.

"She's fine, Kat," Peeta says.

"Can you pull over so I can check on her?" I ask.

Peeta laughs a little. "Honey we're almost home."

I sigh. "Fine," I mutter. When we get home, I hurry and get Willow's seat out of the car. I'm happy to see her moving her arms around. I take her in the house and take her out of her seat.

"Welcome back home, Willow," Peeta says before he kisses her head.

"Mommy's so glad you're okay," I say. We carry her around the rest of the day. There's no way we're putting her down yet. When nighttime rolls around, I'm sitting on the bed with a sleeping Willow in my arms.

"You need to sleep," Peeta says as he sits down on the bed.

"I'm okay," I say.

"Katniss, I'll bring her bassinet in here," he says. "You haven't slept much the last two nights."

"Neither have you," I say.

"I'm not the one refusing to sleep," he laughs.

"Fine," I sigh. Peeta brings her bassinet in there, and I lay her down in it. She's asleep almost immediately. I lay my head over on Peeta's chest and he wraps his arms around me. I don't sleep though, and I know Peeta doesn't either.
