Chapter 19

Katniss P.O.V.
I lay on my side and listen to Peeta snore beside of me. I smile and gently run a hand through his hair. This usually wakes him up, but this time it just elicits a louder snore from him. I have to bite my tongue to keep from laughing.

Willow isn't even a week old yet and she's already worn both of us out, but neither of us would trade it for anything. I lay awake and wait for Willow to cry. Peeta and I decided to put her in her crib tonight, and I haven't slept a wink because of it. I'm used to having her sleep right beside of me in her bassinet where we can keep an eye on her.

I wait a few more minutes before I finally decide to get up and go check on her. It's not until I go to sit up that I realize Peeta has his arm wrapped protectively around me.

I try to move his arm, but it won't budge. Willow starts crying and I sigh. I didn't want to wake Peeta up, but it looks like I'm going to have to.

I start to nudge his shoulder. "Peeta," I say. "Let me up." His eyes open just enough for me to see their beautiful blue color.

"Baby's crying," he mumbles.

"I know," I say. "But I can't get up. Your arm is wrapped around me."

"Oh," he says sleepily. His eyes close again and his snores start back up.

"Peeta," I say. His arm tightens around me and he holds me even closer to him. I shake his shoulder. "Sweetie, move your arm." His eyes open just a little bit more this time.

"Hm?" he asks before his eyes close again. I sigh. There's only one thing left I know to try and if it doesn't work, I don't know what I'm going to do. I lean in and press my lips firmly to his. It takes him a second to respond, but he finally kisses me back. I start to pull away, but he tries to hold my head in place.

"Peeta, I have to go check on Willow," I say. He quickly lets go of me.

"Oh, sorry," he says. I laugh and stand up.

"It's okay," I say. "But Willow might be mad at you." He laughs and I start over to the nursery. I turn the light on and walk over to pick Willow up out of her crib. "I'm sorry baby," I say as I fix her blankets so they're wrapped around her better. "Mommy tried to come sooner, but Daddy wouldn't let me up."

"Hey," Peeta says from behind me. "I was comfortable."

"You were more than comfortable," I tease. "You were passed out." He laughs.

"Will you forgive me if I fix her bottle?" he asks.

I wait for a moment, acting like I'm thinking it over. "Mmm. Maybe," I reply. He smiles and shakes his head at me. Once Willow's bottle is ready, Peeta hands it to me and I begin to feed her.

"Am I forgiven?" Peeta asks as he wraps his arms around my waist.

"I don't know," I say. "Fixing her bottle is just too easy. I think you also need to be in charge of changing her diaper for a week." He chuckles and leans his chin on my shoulder.

"Willow, Mommy is silly," Peeta says. I turn my head a little to look at him.

"Mommy isn't joking," I say. He laughs and I scowl at him.

"You're cute when you're mad," he says.

"That's not helping you any," I reply, biting my lip to keep from smiling. He raises an eyebrow at me.

"Really?" Peeta asks. "Because I know you're trying not to smile." That gets me. A smile spreads across my face and Peeta's blue eyes light up with amusement. "See?" he says as he points at me. "I knew you couldn't stay mad at me for too long." I laugh and look down at Willow.

"Daddy's acting like a brat," I say. Peeta laughs, kisses my cheek, and then the leans his head against mine. It's in this moment- with Peeta's arms wrapped around me and Willow falling asleep in my arms- that I don'tknow why I didn't agree to this sooner. If I had had just a glimpse of what my life is like today, I would have told Peeta yes the very first time he asked me.

Willow finishes eating, but it takes her forever to fall asleep afterwards. Once she finally drifts off, I lay her down in her crib and Peeta and I head back to bed.

"Peeta, have you seen Willow's pacifier?" I ask loud enough so he can hear me downstairs.

"No," he hollers back. "I haven't seen it." I sigh and turn around to walk to the nursery. I bounce Willow in my arms as I walk.

"What did I do with that thing?" I ask, even though I know nobody but Willow can hear me. I go over to her crib and pick up the blanket she was wrapped up in. I sigh in relief when I see her paci laying there. I pick it up and pop it in her mouth. Willow's cries instantly turn to little whimpers. "There," I say softly. "That's better."

I go over to the closet and grab an outfit to put on her. I then carry her over to the changing table and lay her down on it. Her eyes stay locked on me the entire time I'm changing her. I feel a hand touch my arm and I jump.

"Sorry," Peeta says. "I didn't mean to startle you."

"It's okay," I reply. "I just didn't know anybody else was in the room." I finish dressing Willow and I pick her up. "I guess I was so busy taking care of her, I didn't hear you coming up the steps."

"Come on," he says. "Breakfast is ready." We walk downstairs and I turn around to look at him.

"Would you bring the bassinet into the kitchen so I can lay her down in it?" I ask. "I think we left it in the living room yesterday."

"Yeah," Peeta replies. I walk on to the kitchen and sit down. Peeta appears shortly afterwards and sets the bassinet down beside my chair. I watch Willow while we eat, and Peeta takes care of her while I clean up the kitchen.

When I finish, I pick Willow up out of the bassinet. I carry her into the living room to find Peeta setting Willow's car seat down on the couch.

"What are you doing?" I ask. He looks at me.

"I thought that since you've been stuck in the house for the past few days, and since it's raining right now, maybe you'd like to take a ride," Peeta says.

I smile at him. "I'd love to," I say. "Let me go dress Willow up in something a little warmer."

"Okay," Peeta replies. I take Willow upstairs to the nursery and change her into some warmer clothes. I wrap her up in a blanket and grab her diaper bag before I walk back downstairs. Peeta walks over to me.

"Are you ready to go for a ride, Willow?" he asks as he starts to take her from my arms. He lays her down in her car seat and straps her in. I get an extra blanket out of her bassinet and lay it over her seat so she won't get wet. Peeta picks the seat up and I put my jacket on. As soon as we step out the door, chaos breaks out. People talking. Lights flashing.

Cameras.

As soon as I figure out what's going on, I turn around and hide my face in Peeta's chest. He wraps an arm around my waist and pulls me back into the house, shutting the door behind us. He sets the car seat down on the floor.

"Are you okay?" Peeta asks. I nod my head.

"What are they doing out there?" I ask.

"They must've heard about Willow," Peeta replies. I pull back and look at him.

"She's none of their business!" I say angrily. Peeta stares at the door with an unhappy look in his eyes.

"You're right," he says as he lets go of me. "She's none of their business." He starts moving towards the door.

"Peeta," I say as I pull back on his arm. "Don't go back out there. They'll leave eventually."

"Yeah, but they'll just come right back," Peeta replies. He's telling the truth. They will come back.

"I know. But they still will even if you go out there and run them off." He sighs.

"Yeah. Maybe if we ignore them enough times they'll eventually leave us alone," Peeta says. Willow starts crying and I take her out of her car seat.

"What's the matter?" I ask softly. "I bet you're getting hungry again," I say as I take her into the kitchen so I can fix her bottle.

It's getting dark by the time we can finally leave. It doesn't take us long to figure out that Willow loves her car seat. Five minutes into our ride, she's out of it.

"We should do this every night to get her to sleep," Peeta says. I start laughing.

"She probably won't sleep very long," I say. And I'm right. As soon as we pull into the driveway, Willow wakes up.

"So much for that," Peeta laughs. Once we get ready for bed, it takes Willow an hour to finally go back to sleep.
