Chapter 12

Peeta's P.O.V.

"Peeta. Peeta, wake up," Katniss whispers as she pinches my nose. I open my eyes and when I see that it's still dark outside, I smile.

"Let me guess," I yawn. "Another craving?" Katniss nods her head. "Let me guess," I say as I sit up and stretch. "Is it cheese buns?" She smiles at me.

"I'm sorry," she says.

"Don't be." I stand up and stretch again. "I'd do anything for you. You know that. Even if that means waking up at..." I stop to glance over at the clock, "two thirty in the morning to fix you some cheese buns. Look at it this way. Only two more months to go. Right?" I ask as I place my hand on her stomach.

"Right," Katniss replies. I lean over and kiss her before heading towards the door. I don't even make it out in the hallway before she's stopping me. "Peeta, wait!" she calls out. "I've changed my mind. I'll just wait."

"Are you sure?" I ask. "You know I don't care to fix them for you if you want them."

"I know," she says "It's just that I'm really tired right now. I'll just wait and have them for breakfast."

"Okay." I crawl back underneath the covers and start yawning again. Katniss starts laughing at me.

"Sounds like you're sleepy too." I nod my head. "Just think that later on today well be headed for District 12."

"Yeah." We decided to take the trio this week. I kept having to push it back because of how busy I've been. I've still been busy, but I decided not to reschedule it anymore since Katniss is already seven months pregnant.

"Were still going to wait until Gale's trial before we leave, right?"

"Yeah." I reply. I completely forgot about that. Gale has court this afternoon and Katniss made me promise we'd go to it.

Katniss's breathing evens out letting me know that she's asleep. I close my eyes and it's not long until I am too. When Katniss wakes up, I make sure that she has a plate of cheese buns waiting for her. She's smiling when she walks into the kitchen

"Mmm. I smell cheese buns," Katniss says as she walks over to me.

"Well good morning to you too," I laugh. "I hope you still want these." I hold the plate out to her.

"You bet I do." She takes one and is about to bite into it when she stops. She gets a confused look on her face as her hand goes to rest on her stomach.

"Katniss?" I quickly walk over to her. "Are you okay?"

"I... I don't know," she replies. "It sort of felt like a kick but it was..."

"It was what?" I ask.

"Different."

"Different?" I start going into panic mode. For Katniss's sake, I try not to let it show. She needs to stay as calm as possible, but I can't help myself. "How'd it feel different?"

"I don't know hot to describe it," Katniss replies. "I'm sure it was nothing."

"Did it hurt?"

"No. Peeta, I'm fine." I can tell she's getting aggravated, but I have to make sure she's okay and that she's not just saying she is.

"You want me to wake up Ellen?" I ask. "She'll most likely know what's going on."

"No. I'm fine."

"Are you sure?" The second I ask it, I wish I could take it back.

"Yes, Peeta! I'm sure!" Katniss yells. "I'm sure I'm fine! I'm sure that I don't want you to wake Mom up! What I want is for you to calm down!" Her eyes fill up with tears. She stares at me for a moment before she turns away from me, "I'm sorry," she says in a much softer voice. "I guess I need to calm down too."

I gently put my hands on her shoulders. She quickly turns around and our arms wrap tightly around each other.

"I had a nightmare after we went back to sleep this morning," Katniss says as she draws in a long, shaky breath. "I dreamed about the baby. It started out as they normally do. Happy, and then we lost..." Her voice cracks on the word "lost" as she trails off. She starts crying so hard that she begins to shake. I take her by her elbows, lead her over to the closest chair, and pull it out from the table. Katniss sits in the chair and I kneel down in front of her, placing a hand back on her shoulder. With my free hand, I grab one of hers and give it a reassuring squeeze.

She looks at me and takes another deep breath before continuing. "For the past week, all I can hear is the doctor's voice saying that our baby won't make it. Peeta, we can't loose another baby," she sobs. I embrace her and put my mouth next to her hear.

"Shhh. It's okay," I whisper. She finally calms down enough to speak.

"I'm sorry I get so upset," Katniss says.

"Honey, listen to me," I say gently. "Don't be sorry for getting upset. You had a reason to be. Besides, I don't know how you're supposed to stay calm when I get worked up too." She pulls back a little.

"I'm glad I have you to put up with me and my moodswings," Katniss says. I smile at her.

"That's what I'm here for," I reply. This gets her to laugh a little bit.

"I love you," Katniss says as she leans over and kisses me.

"I love you too," I reply.

"Did I hear yelling down here?" Ellen asks as she comes down the stairs. I turn my head in her direction and smile.

"Yes, you did," I reply as I turn back to face Katniss.

"You're not supposed to rat me out," Katniss teases.

"What was in supposed to do?" I ask. "Lie?"

"Yes." I laugh at her and stand up.

"I better go take our stuff out to the car since we'll be leaving soon," I says as I walk up the stairs. It takes me three trips from the house to the car before I finally get everything loaded up. As I'm taking the last suitcase out, I notice my office door standing open. It's not until I go over to shut the door that I realize the piles of paper sitting on top of my desk I sigh and walk back downstairs.

"Are we ready?" Katniss asks as she stands up.

"Actually, is it okay if you just go on to the court house and come pick me up when it's over with?"

"Yeah," Katniss replies. "Do you not want to go?"

"No, it's not that. I just realized that I have a lot of work to finish and I want to get it done before we leave to go to 12."

"That's fine," Katniss replies. "Me and Mom will go on then." I give her a kiss before her and Ellen leave. I go upstairs and start working on getting everything finished up.

I doubt that even an hour has passed when I hear the front door shut. I go into the hallway just in time to see Katniss coming up the steps. I can tell right away that she's upset. I open my arms for her and she walks right over to me. "He lied," Katniss says once she's safe in my arms.

"What did he lie about?" I ask.

"He pleaded guilty. I know better though. He lied, Peeta." She buries her head in my chest.

"It's okay," I whisper. "It's okay. You want me to see if I can get him a second chance?" She looks up at me and nods her head.

"Can you do that?" she asks.

"I'll try my best," I assure her.

"Thank you," she says.

"You're welcome," I reply. "Are we ready to leave now?"

"Yeah." We walk out to the car and we are finally on our way to 12. By the time we get there, get unpacked, and eat, it's already getting late. Ellen is the first to stand up from the table.

"I'll clean the kitchen tonight," she says.

"That's okay," Katniss says as she also stands up. "We can get it."

"No, you two go on and rest. I'll take care of it."

"Mom..." Ellen stops her by putting a hand up.

"Arguing will get you nowhere." Katniss looks over at me and I know she wants me to do something. I get ready to speak, but Ellen beats me to it. "Ganging up on me won't get you anywhere either." Katniss smiles at her and shakes her head.

"And I wonder where I get my stubbornness from." She walks over to Ellen and givers her a hug. "Goodnight Mom."

"Goodnight," Ellen replies. Katniss walks over to me and we both head upstairs to go to bed. I have just sat down on the edge of the bed when the phone starts ringing.

"I'll get it," Katniss says as she walks out of the room. I take my clothes and head into the bathroom to change. When I come out, Katniss is sitting in the spot that I was.

"Who called?" I ask. She smiles at me.

"Haymitch," she replies. "He wants us to visit him tomorrow. He said he would have come over when we first got here, but he was afraid it was too late." I get ready to say something when Katniss suddenly reaches out her hand to me. "Feel," she says as she takes my hand and places it on her stomach. "That's what I was feeling this morning." I raise my eyebrows at her when I feel a sharp, quick movement. "Mom said that the baby has the hiccups," Katniss explains.

"We got upset over notuing," I say as I smile at her. She nods her head and yawns.

"Goodnight," she says as she kisses me.

"Goodnight," I reply. We both lay down and go to sleep. It isn't long until Katniss is waking me back up.
