Chapter 11
Katniss P.O.V.
After Mom gets settled in, Peeta makes supper for us. While we're eating, I sit across the table from Peeta and pick at my chicken with my fork.
"Katniss, you should eat something," Peeta says, giving me a concerned look. I shake my head.
"I'm not very hungry," I say.
"At least try eating a few bites," he pleads.
"Actually, I'm not feeling too well," I say as I stand up. "I think I'm going to go lay down for a bit." I leave the kitchen and walk upstairs to our bedroom, shutting the door behind me. I sit down on the bed and it isn't long until the door opens back up. Peeta pokes his head in.
"Are you okay?" he asks.
"Yeah," I reply as I pick a random spot on the floor to stare at. Peeta comes in and sits down next to me.
"You're mad," he says.
"No. Really?" I reply sarcastically.
"I'm sorry," he says slowly. I keep staring at the floor. "Katniss, what do you want me to do? Get on my hands and knees and beg for your forgiveness?" I look at him.
"Make her go home," I say. He gives me a shocked look.
"Katniss, I can't just ask her to leave. She has feelings too."
"Well, you invited her here without considering my feelings."
"Now, Katniss, that is enough!" Peeta says sternly as he stands up off the bed. "She is your mother. Now it's time you stop acting like a child over this!"
"You wasn't supposed to invite her here to stay with us, Peeta. You was supposed to wait for me to call her!" I also stand up so I'm more level with Peeta.
"Yeah, and that's why I went ahead and invited her here," he says as his voice drops a little. "I know that if I had waited on you, then that phone call would have never been made." He starts to walk off, but I grab him by his arm.
"How do you know?" I ask. My hand still grips his arm. "You didn't give me enough time." Peeta shakes his head at me.
"You're unbelievable," he says. "You've had three years to call her, Katniss. How much more time do you need?" I stand there and stare at him. "You don't want our baby to grow up and treat you like this do you?"
My hand falls from his arm as my gaze falls to the floor. He's hit my weak spot. He knew he'd get through to my stubborn self by mentioning the baby.
Tears fall down my cheeks as I walk back over to the bed and sit back down. "You're right," I say as I put my head in my hands. "I'm a terrible person." Peeta also sits down and then wraps me up in his arms.
"No, Katniss," Peeta says softly. "That's not what I'm saying."
"I know it's not," I say, wiping a tear from my cheek. "But I am. I was so mad at Mom I didn't even realize that I was doing the exact same thing to her by ignoring her and not trying to fix anything."
"Katniss, just because you regret your actions doesn't mean you're a terrible person. I just brought her here because I thought it was best that you had some kind of relationship with her than none at all." I look up at him and nod my head.
"I'll sorry," I say quietly. "You was just trying to help and I was acting like a jerk."
"No you weren't. You just got mad. That's okay, we all do that from time to time." He pulls me back and wipes my tears away. "I'll go tell Ellen that you're not feeling well and you're going to stay up here and rest."
"No," I say as I shake my head. "I want to go back down. I'll be all right."
"You sure?" Peeta asks.
"Yeah." Peeta stands up and smiles at me.
"Let's go then," he says as he holds out a hand to me. I take it and we walk back downstairs. When we get back to the kitchen, Mom is still sitting at the table. She turns sideways in her chair when she hears us coming. I walk over to her and wrap my arms around her neck.
"I'm sorry," I whisper.
"You have nothing to be sorry about," Mom replies.
"Yes, I do," I say as I let go of her neck and sit down in the chair next to her. "I should've been the one that invited you here. Instead, Peeta had to just to show me how stubborn I was being." I look over at Peeta to find him standing in the doorway, smiling at me.
"I should have called you a long time ago," I say as I look back at Mom. "You should've been the first person I called when I first found out that I'm pregnant. I've been ignoring you all day when all you've been trying to do is show me that you do care, and I'm sorry for that." Mom shakes her head at me.
"You have every right to be mad at me," she says softly. "I'm sorry for leaving you when you needed me most."
"It's okay. That's all behind us now." Peeta comes over and bends down next to me.
"I'm proud of you," he says as he kisses my cheek. "Why don't you try to eat something now? You barely touched your food while ago." I nod my head and go back to my plate.
When we're all done eating, Peeta helps me take the dishes over to the sink. I'm in the middle of washing a plate when Peeta grabs it with one hand and wraps his free arm around my waist.
"Go sit down. I'll wash the dishes." He tries to pull the plate from me, but I keep my grip on it.
"No, I'm okay," I say as I try to pull the plate back. I look at him and smile when he also doesn't let go of it. "I guess now is when you tell me to go rest and I get stubborn but finally end up giving in to you anyways."
"Sounds about right," he chuckles.
"Fine," I say as as I let go of the plate. "I'll go in the living room and talk to Mom if you want to take over."
"I'll really am proud of you for what you said to her while ago."
"Well, I guess I wasn't helping anything by being stubborn was I?" Peeta shakes his head.
"No," he replies. I lean in and kiss him before heading off to the living room.
"Are you already done with the dishes?" Mom asks the second I walk into the room.
"No," I laugh as I go sit down next to her. "Peeta wouldn't even let me start on them." She smiles at me.
"He sure does care about you," Mom says. "There was no denying that this afternoon when we came back to find that you had left to visit Gale." I raise my eyebrows at her.
"How'd you know that where I was?" I ask.
"Peeta told me," Mom replies.
"Oh," I turn my head towards the kitchen. How did Peeta know where I went?
"What's this I hear about Gale being arrested? Peeta told me part of the story, but not all of it."
"He's being accused of breaking into our house and writing us threatening letters. He says he didn't do it, though." I don't feel like getting too in depth about it right now, so I decide to just leave it at that.
In a few minutes, Peeta joins us. Not long after that, I go on up to bed. Peeta comes in right as I'm laying down.
"How'd you know where I was today?" I ask Peeta.
"What do you mean?"
"Well, while ago, Mom was talking about how worried you was this afternoon when I was visiting Gale. I asked her how she knew where I was at, and she said you told her. So how'd you know?"
"I just did," Peeta replies as he crawls in next to me. "I guess you're too predictable." I start laughing as he wraps his arms around me. "There's something I wanted to ask you this afternoon, but I never got the chance to"
"What's that?" I ask.
"How would you like to finally take that trip to District 12 that I've been promising you?"
"Really?" I ask.
"Really," Peeta replies smiling. "It'll still be a few weeks until we can go, but I promise we'll go as soon as things calm down a bit."
"I'd love that, Peeta." I turn my head around and kiss him.
"But not as much as you love me. Right?"
"Of course not," I laugh. I lay my head on his chest and he rests his hands on my stomach. We soon fall asleep like that.
When I wake up, I find Peeta's arms still wrapped around me. I can hear him talking to someone, but I don't see anyone else in the room. It takes me a minute to figure out that he's talking to the baby. I decide to act like I'm still asleep so I can listen to what he's saying. If he finds out I'm awake, he'll stop.
"Daddy's going to spoil you rotten," Peeta whispers. I fight to keep a smile from spreading across my face. "Just don't tell Mommy," he continues. "She might get jealous." He stops for a moment and then puts his mouth right by my ear. "Katniss," he says softly. "You can stop pretending now. I know you're awake." I start laughing as I open my eyes and look up at him. Peeta's cheeks start running red.
"Don't be embarrassed," I laugh. "I thought it was cute." I feel a kick and start laughing. "I think the baby liked it too." Peeta chuckles. "Do you like hearing your daddy's voice?" I ask softly. "Hey, Peeta."
"Yeah?"
"Who do you think this baby is going to look more like?" I ask him.
"I hope she looks like you," he replies.
"No," I say. "I just want a mini Peeta running around." We both start laughing.
"One things for sure. I hope this baby doesn't develop your stubbornness." I scowl at him. "I sure hope she has your temper though."
"Why?" I laugh. "And quit calling the baby she. You don't know for sure that we're having a girl."
"Yes I do," he teases. "And I hope she gets your temper because you sure are cute when you get mad." I smile at him.
"I know one thing about the baby," I say.
"What's that?"
"He or she sure is lucky to have us as for their mommy and daddy."
