Chapter 26 - I Do Times Two

Mother Nature decides to gift the travelers a wet drive the day before the wedding. The sun can barely poke through the dark gray clouds, but Mary reminds Lloyd what it means, "The old saying is if it rains when you get married, it's meant to last."

"I hope so. I don't think I've ever been this nervous. What if I'm making a mistake?"

Mary knows it's only cold feet talking, but she tries to help her son remain calm while keeping her eyes locked on the traffic ahead.

"What you two have is something special, and I couldn't be happier that you found Simon. The day you brought him home, I knew he was the one for you. The way your eyes lit up showed the passion between you two, and had your father been here, that would've made this perfect. No one could blame you for feeling nervous. You're the first ones to get married between you, Cory, and Rick. Look at you setting the trend," Mary clarifies as they share a laugh.

Her words help Lloyd feel a bit better. He stares out the window listening to music while he works on bringing his blood pressure and worry down until they stop at the border crossing and hand over their passports.

The Mountie at the station leans towards the window to question their business for crossing the border, "Good day, what's your purpose for visiting Canada today?"

Before Mary can respond, Lloyd speaks up, "Good day, sir. I'm meeting my groom-to-be in Kenora to get married."

"Oh! Well, allow me to say congratulations, eh. Are there many others in your party?"

Turning his head, Lloyd sees the Accord, Sportage, and Crown Victoria, making sure the others are close.

"Yes, see the Honda Accord, Kia Sportage, and Crown Vic behind it; they are with us. They shouldn't give you any issues, sir."

"Dually noted, and again young man, congratulations. I wish you a happy, long, and healthy marriage," The Mountie says with a smile and hands back their passports.

"Thank you, sir. You are too kind and a treasure to the great country of Canada. My fiance is Canadian. Have a good day, and thank you for your service."

Mary rolls up the window and pulls through once the gate is lifted and takes her time slowly strolling as the others make their way into Canada. Finally, they pull into a Circle K gas station after everyone crosses the border. There, everyone refuels, and rather than take off once the vehicles are topped off, Cory heads inside to get drinks and snacks. Some of the items he purchases for everyone are five bottles of water for Lorraine, Rick, Dawson, Charlotte, and Janet, and he buys Lloyd Seagrams Ginger Ale. At the same time, he picked up a Fruitopia juice for CJ and a cherry 7up for Tara while he enjoys a 20-ounce Mountain Dew Voltage fountain drink. As for snacks, the only thing Cory buys is a bag of Muncho Potato Chips since they're salty and one of Tara's favorite snacks.

"Here, babe, these should help your stomach feel better. Are you sure you're okay?" Cory wonders, seeing Tara still pale, holding her stomach.

"Yes. I'm sure it's only that stomach bug going around. It's nothing; I promise I'm fine," Tara tells him, then quickly struggles to get out of the car to run inside, where she pukes in the ladies' restroom.

All of them sit and wait for Tara to return, but the riding arrangements change when she does. Soon after, Tara gets into the back seat of her mother's Accord while Lorraine rides with Cory and CJ as Lloyd takes over driving his car, so he doesn't have to give his mother directions to the church. When they arrive and park, the rain turns to snow, leaving Janet, Dawson, and Charlotte shocked.

"It's so pretty!" Dawson mentions with his hands out to catch some snowflakes.

"Get your jacket on, buddy. You don't want to come down with a cold," Rick advises after he pops the trunk to get their jackets out.

Once they're inside the church, the sight of blue and white decorations takes their breath away. There are nearly a hundred battery-powered candles throughout the church that slowly glows to give the feel of an evening in peace. The display and soft music from the surround sound system have the young couples feeling the love at the moment. Lloyd walks up to Simon at the pulpit, where they stand and talk to the preacher. Tara's stomach makes a loud gurgling sound that sends her searching for a bathroom. Concerned, the other ladies follow her and wait for her to finish in the stall.

"Spill it, it's not the flu, and it's sure as heck not food poisoning. You're pregnant, aren't you?" Lorraine eagerly asks.

Tara acknowledges with a nod until she finishes tapping her lips with a damp paper towel Janet hands her, "I took a test before we left. But I haven't told Cory. I'm afraid of how he's going to react. So, who wants to be the one to break the news to him for me?"

Her support group in the bathroom tries to keep the squeals at a minimum so they don't alert the guys out in the church. Instead, the excitement surges with hugs and hands softly touching Tara's belly.

"Okay, I mean it, we need another girl in this group. Just, oh golly gee, I'm going to be a grandma twice over!" Olivia says, trying not to cry.

Janet comes up and hugs Tara in a way that she doesn't let go, "You have no idea how happy I am to be here this time. God's being good to us, sissy. I love you."

"I love you too. I love all y'all, but there's one thing I want before this baby comes," Tara expresses with worry in her eyes, "I don't want to still be unmarried. I love Cory, and I want us to get married and do it right from now on."

"You leave that to me. I'll put a little bug in my son's ear. You relax and let us help out with anything and everything."

Once they join the guys and kids out in the chapel, Tara and Lorraine join Cory and Rick upfront as the preacher gives instructions and details about what to do for the ceremony. They even rehearse CJ with his duty as ring bearer. Then, the preacher has them go through two full run-throughs before they call it. Simon's folks don't intervene as they sit and observe, biding their time for proper introductions at last with Lloyd's mother and extended family.

"Alright there, sirs, I do believe we can call it wraps. Lloyd, it is a pleasure to meet you finally. I know we sort of rushed this, but I am Brother Harris Byrd. Simon has told me all about you. It's nice to have you here with us finally. All I ask is don't keep our Simon from us."

"I would never keep him from visiting his family and loved ones here. I didn't have a big family growing up, so I wouldn't be selfish by keeping Simon to myself. We've discussed it, and we're going to alternate holidays with our families. My mother is more than happy to come with us to visit."

Brother Byrd dips his head in approval since he wanted to get a feel for Lloyd's character, "I wanted to hear that for myself. If you'll excuse me, I'll let your families mingle."

The preacher escorts both families out before they have a chance to meet formally. Simon takes it upon himself to get everyone moving to his parent's home a few miles away on Lakeside Beach Road to an extravagant house built with cedar, large windows with green shutters, and a green roof that sits about twenty yards from the lake with a dock. Everyone except Lloyd is blown away at the size of the house when they pull into the driveway.

"Way to go, Lloyd!" Rick lets out, feeling Lloyd has moved up in the world.

Waiting by the front door, Mr. and Mrs. Fisher are anxious to meet Lloyd's extended family. When everyone gathers by them, Mrs. Fisher introduces herself and her husband, "Greetings to all and welcome to our humble home. I am Chantelle Fisher, and this is my husband, Bruce Fisher. We are delighted to have you stay with us tonight. We hope you are as pleased about tomorrow as we are if you wouldn't mind introducing yourself and how you are associated with Lloyd."

Lloyd steps up to introduce everyone to save time. He begins with Lorraine and works his way from there, "Chantelle, this is my best friend's mother, Lorraine Dubois and to her right is her son Cory and his fiancee Tara Rose and their son Cory Jr."

"To my left is Tara's mother, Olivia Rose, with my other best friend Rick McGuiness and his beloved girlfriend Janet Elkins with her two little ones, Dawson and Charlotte," Lloyd says after taking in a deep breath.

"Well, since introductions are out of the way, please follow us inside. Our house lady, Eloise Hardy, will show you to your rooms. Dinner will be ready promptly at five o'clock. Whatever you need, please let Eloise know. Our kitchen staff is busy preparing everything for tomorrow. I hope no one has issues with cornish game hen with cranberry sauce, garlic sauteed potatoes au gratin, with various other side items. For the little ones, whatever they like, we will do our best to accommodate their needs." Mr. Fishers shares and notices everyone is in awe of the foyer and the open concept of their home.

"Cheeseburgers and fries, please!" Charlotte cries out.

The Fishers find pleasure in how bold the four-year-old isn't afraid to speak her mind, "I do believe that we can handle that. So, with that said, welcome to our home. Please, follow Eloise and clean up."

Everyone is shown their rooms one by one, with Lorraine deciding to bunk with Olivia while Rick bunks with Cory since the Fishers won't allow unmarried couples to sleep together in their home. None of them can wrap their minds around how well the Fishers have done. Still, when Cory comes down for dinner, it makes sense to him, seeing that Mr. Fisher owns a hockey team franchise after seeing a case with trophies and photos from his playing days and newspaper articles about his growth as an expansion team owner.

In the dining area, everyone finds their name at the long table. Before they're seated, Brother Byrd arrives for dinner and says grace, there's plenty of small talk around the table. When grace is finished, Tara covers her mouth and runs for a bathroom, "Excuse us, she's feeling a little under the weather," Janet mentions, then gets to her feet, following Tara.

"Their accent is delectable; where are those two young women from?" Chantelle asks.

"The girls grew up in Little Rock, Arkansas. I was raised in RiverCreek, but I left after I graduated with my late husband. Wane was a trucker, but I wanted away from my hometown. But, it wasn't until my mother passed away that we moved back, and Janet with her children joined our community a few months back," Olivia explains while she cuts into her hen.

Mrs. Fisher clasps her hands in her lap with a smirk, "I've always adored the sound of the southern American accent. Ever since I watched The Wizard of Oz and fell in love with that sound of that accent."

A few minutes pass before the girls rejoin dinner. Tara looks like death rolled over. She barely touches her food, which the Fishers understand, and offer their support for anything she needs with their private physician to come to examine her if she chooses.

"Oh, I appreciate the gesture, but I'll be fine," Tara begins, then curls her lips, preparing to let the secret out, "I have something to share with everyone. Lloyd, Simon, I don't mean to your moment, but..." she pauses and gets to her feet, "I'm pregnant."

The look of shock on Cory's face says it all, "I took a test this morning, and it came up positive. So, yes, Cory, we're going to have another baby."

"ANOTHER BABY?" Lloyd cries out from under his hands that cover his mouth, "Oh my gosh, I am so happy I can't find the words."

Cory walks around the table and takes Tara in his arms. CJ's all smiles as Chantelle and Bruce lift their wine glasses, "Cheers! May your baby be happy and healthy. To Cory and Tara!" Bruce announces, getting to his feet to praise the expecting parents.

Dinner wraps up, but Cory and Tara spend time at the table discussing the revelation about the baby. Cory's over the moon, which brings a wave of relief to Tara.

"So, you're not mad at me for keeping it from you?"

"Mad? Not at all. I mean, I missed so much with CJ. Consider this a promise to be here for every appointment. Your mom got me good the other night, but we're better prepared now. I love you so much."

Tara makes her single demand known, "I love you too. But don't hate me for what I need to say. As much as we love each other, I have one thing I need to be done before this baby is born."

Nervous at first, Cory gives a hard gulp, "Name it."

"We need to get married. I don't care when or how. All I want is our family made whole."

"That's it? Tara, if it's that important to you, then, of course, we'll get married soon. You, CJ, and this baby are my world. There's nothing I wouldn't do for you or our children. You've been my saving grace."

Moved to tears, Tara wraps her arms tightly around Cory's neck. They spend a few more minutes coming up with a list of names, but they return to their rooms to call it a night before too long.

The night flies by, and things begin to kick off around eight o'clock in the morning. Lloyd and Simon are kept apart, with the Fishers going to the church while Lloyd stays behind to get ready. His hands continue to shake the closer it gets to noon.

With a knock on the door, Cory enters Lloyd's room and helps make sure that Loyd's tuxedo is straight and neat.

"You're looking fly. Got your hair gelled and styled. You're clean-shaven, unlike my ugly ass."

Lloyd tries not to laugh, "You're not ugly, Cory. However, I could use a distraction. How does it feel to be a daddy all over again? Do you think Simon and I will feel the same way adopting a child?"

"There isn't a feeling in the world to compare it to. The news drove away from the bad dreams last night and replaced them with ones of us holding our newborn. Now, as far as adopting a baby, whichever child you choose is going to know more love and have a happy home. You got a heart of pure gold. You're one of the best people I know. Simon's the lucky one."

"I couldn't be happier for you and Tara. There have been so many times I prayed for you two to find each other again, and you have. When Simon agreed to marry me, I knew the kind of love you have for Tara and your parents for each other. For years I was so envious, but now I get to marry the man of my dreams," Lloyd stops, noticing he's no longer shaking, "How do you do it? You come in here and calm me down. You truly are my big brother."

Cory leaves Lloyd to get the final touches out of the way before they load up in the limo, waiting for them outside. They're all stunned at the Cadillac Escalade limo, but soon they're helped into the back and taken to the church. Arriving about thirty minutes before the ceremony begins, the church bells ring, and people drive by honking to show their support and admiration, which is a tradition in Kenora.

At the five-minute mark, the bells go silent to allow music inside the chapel to play until it's time to start the ceremony. Simon stands with Brother Byrd when the wedding march music begins, with the church pianist being the signal for everyone to stand. Lloyd enters the chapel with his mother on his arm as the wedding party is already in place. Brother Byrd nods for them to come to make their way to the front, and after the mother and son duo stop in front of the preacher, he begins.

"You may be seated. Who today gives this man to enter marital bliss?"

"I, Mary Trippet, give this man away."

Mary gives Lloyd's hand to Simon and then takes her seat beside Chantelle, already in tears.

"Let's begin. Gentlemen, repeat after me."

Brother Byrd gives them their vows, "I, Simon, take you, Lloyd, to be my husband and share the good times and hard times. I humbly give you my hand and my heart as I pledge my faith and love to you. Just as this ring I give you today is a circle without end, my love for you is eternal. Just as it is made of incorruptible substance, my commitment to you will never fail. With this ring, I thee wed."

Simon repeats the vow and slips the ring on Lloyd's finger when CJ hands him the ring.

"Lloyd, it is your turn," he says before he tells Lloyd the vow, "I, Lloyd, take you, Simon, to be my husband, to share the good times and hard times side by side. I humbly give you my hand and my heart as I pledge my faith and love to you. Just as this ring I give you today is a circle without end, my love for you is eternal. Just as it is made of incorruptible substance, my commitment to you will never fail. With this ring, I thee wed." Lloyd recites without the hint of fear in his voice.

"As you say these vows in the presence of your loved ones here tonight in the eyes of God, may your union be blessed. By the power vested in me by the Province of Ontario, I pronounce you husband and husband. You may kiss."

Lloyd and Simon come together as everyone in the church begin to clap, and after they break, Brother Byrd makes it official, "May I present to you, Mr. and Mr. Trippet, may God bless you all."

The newlyweds walk down the aisle and over to the adjacent building for the reception. While everyone starts to follow, Rick takes Janet's hand, "Wait. I need to know, will you marry me?"

Unaware that the preacher is still standing there, he stops to see what happens.

"Rick, this is so sudden, but yes. The kids love, and I love you. Dawson this morning asked why 'daddy' wasn't with us in the room, and that nearly broke my heart. You've been the most amazing man I've ever met. Of course, I will marry you!"

"If you don't mind, I can do that right here, right now. I have all the paperwork in my office if you would like to sign it, and I will send it to the courthouse for approval."

Startled, Rick and Janet look at each other and agree to go ahead and do it. They're unaware that Lorraine and Olivia also stayed behind when they noticed Rick and Janet weren't with Dawson and Charlotte on the way out.

"I'll be their witness preacher. Rick has been like a son to me for years, and I'd be more than happy to see this occur."

"As would I also like to be the witness for Janet. She's been like a daughter to me, and it's an honor to see her happy and taken care of by one of the best young men of his generation."

Brother Byrd waves them forward, and they exchange vows, but without rings, they merely kiss. It isn't until the five of them make their presence known at the reception that the preacher makes the announcement.

"If I may have your attention, please. Moments ago, this special day had more happen than expected. Just now, these two lovers took the plunge and are now husband and wife. So, I am pleased to present Mr. and Mrs. McGuiness to you!"

The crowd gets to their feet with hoots and hollers for the news. Lloyd and Simon are the first ones to walk over to congratulate the second set of newlyweds.

"Normally, I would say I am concerned about the rash decision, but I can feel the passion and love coming from you two. Don't forget that it takes lots of work to make it last. I'm happy to see your life fulfilled," Lloyd says, then hugs Rick and Janet.

"Don't forget to have a honeymoon at some point. Spontaneous love makes life worth it," Simon tells them with a hug before he takes Lloyd back to the wedding party table as the festivities carry through the rest of the afternoon.

Lloyd and Simon don't return to the house when things begin to wind down. Instead, they're on their way to the Bahamas for a two-week cruise. With the pressure to follow their best friends, Cory and Tara realize that life is speeding up, and now they're the ones having to catch up. Sadly, they don't get the time to discuss it since they don't want to ruin the day for their best friends. They know their day is coming, but with the bar set so high with the unplanned double wedding, Tara isn't sure how she could compete. It's always been her dream to have a special day, but Cory has an idea of how to make it one worth remembering, but he keeps the idea to himself as he knows it's a long shot to pull it off.
