Forever Night

She'd found it! Ariel stumbled upon the most precious gift, a chance to be human again. To be able to feel, to be able to die. Immortal was never how Vivian ever saw her life going. So why when Ariel offered it to her did she have to think about it? She had until midnight to take it or it would be lost forever.

The idea of finding the cure sent Vivian to the one place she knew would help her to make the ultimate decision. She was a day shy of eighteen when it happened. Drinking after prom and wandering through the woods was not the smartest decision. She was young, in love, and would do anything with Oliver Jackson.

As Vivian descended from the sky towards the small yellow house on the Marconi Avenue, she wondered if he'd still be the same. He tried to save her that night, but in the end the grotesque creature won and he'd run, leaving her. She didn't blame him, she would have panicked too, if she'd found him lying on the ground covered in crimson blood as some pale demon sucked on his neck.

A dim white light peaked out from the second story window of the small home. Freshly manicured green shrubs sat against the lower level. The lawn was green with life. Oh, how Vivian craved to feel life in her own veins. She wanted her heart to beat, but most of all wanted to feel again.

She perched herself in the tall oak tree beside the home. If she were still alive they'd be celebrating their thirty-fifth birthday together. Instead, he was alone in his office with his eyes glued to a computer screen. He was the one, it didn't matter that they were barely eighteen at the time, she knew it in her heart.

He aged well. Same beautiful flawless skin, only now mostly covered in black fuzz with specks of gray. He bore no wrinkles or age marks, it was like he was frozen in time. In reality she was the one frozen. Becoming immortal at such a young age kept her there, and if she didn't take the cure she'd be, just like the song said, seventeen forever.

A soft wind blew through the old oak. It's branches shook and leaves rustled. A reflection of the full moon was projected in the top pane of glass.

Oliver rested his head in his hand and shook his head. Scratching at his scruff he glanced out the window. She swore for a moment a tear cascaded down his cheek, but she couldn't be sure.

To get a better view, she transformed, allowing her bat wings to take flight. On the glowing computer screen was an article. She zoned in on it. A gasp escaped her lips at the sight of her picture in the article about her disappearance.

He stood and walked to the window and wiped a second tear. He flicked it off his cheek. He stared out at the branch she perched on seconds earlier. Was he lonely too? She would take the cure and they could be together. She was about to turn and fly away when he made his way back to the computer. She hadn't noticed earlier, but beside the keyboard sat a cupcake, topped with her favorite strawberry frosting and rainbow sprinkles. A candle set in the middle.

"Have you decided?" Ariel appeared. Her black wings flapped in the summer night. She perched herself along the same branch.

"I haven't." Vivian said.

"Is he the reason you would be human again?"

Ariel retracted her wings. Her beautiful red hair blew in the breeze. Her skin shimmered as the moonlight danced upon it.

"He's the one." Vivian explained. "I can still see his face. It was the one of the last vivid memories of being human that I can remember."

Ariel patted Vivian's wing. She stopped flapping and sat beside her on the branch. She rested her hand in a fist under her chin and stared off at Oliver.

"Do you think he would still love you?" Ariel questioned.

Vivian met Ariel in her early days of being a vampire. She'd taught her control and how to hunt the right people. It took her days of vomiting the blood to get acquainted to the taste and smell. Ariel had been a mentor of sorts and she would miss her if she took the cure. Ariel hadn't wanted it, her life was bound to the night.

Vivian's sharp hearing picked up a knock on his office door. Both vampires twisted their necks, their red eyes lighting up. The scent of a woman and child wafted through the small opening of the closed window.

Oliver wiped his tears, shoved the cupcake into his mouth, and then opened the door. Standing with a screeching toddler attached to her hip was Evelyn Brady. Evelyn was Olivia's best friend. Oliver took the young blonde haired boy from Evelyn and kissed her gently.

Olivia had felt no pain since she turned, but tonight that streak had ended. It was as if she had gotten bitten all over again. Her neck throbbed and her dead heart stabbed her like a knife.

"I'm sorry darling."

Ariel lay a soft caressing touching to Olivia's shoulder.

"Why don't you bite him? Turn him? He can be yours."

Olivia shook her head as it hung low. "No." She grumbled. "Destroy the cure. I no longer want it."

Ariel sighed. "Are you sure?"

"I have you and that is all I will ever need to be happy."

Ariel nodded and stood on the branch. Olivia couldn't watch anymore of the scene unfolding before her. As quickly as it had come the pain vanished. She no longer cared. Ariel reached her hand out. "Come on. Let's get you out of here."

Olivia took Ariel's hand and together they flew off into the night, without the cure.
