Understanding

I squirmed around in the binds that Eric tied me in. Christine was practically trembling as she stared at me, trapped in the ropes.

"Eric... Please calm down..." she said, trying to soothe him.

"How can I calm down Christine!?" he yelled, "My only hope of true love tells me that they don't love me in return! How would you feel if you were in my shoes!?"

"E-Eric... I..."

"SILENCE! You have betrayed me from the moment I started to teach you how to sing. I gave up everything just to be in your presence! You chose a handsome face over your wildest dreams..." He glared at her, "Then I get rid of the other option and you still believe you would be happier without me..."

Christine lowered her head in shame. I saw from Eric's viewpoint. It was cruel of her to lead him on like that, and still tell him it wasn't good enough. From everything I had heard, Eric was the victim. Christine had tricked him. He was simply a misunderstood man, who had never known a friendly soul.

Suddenly, two more people dropped down from the portal and stood in the room. Eric spun around in surprise, turning me around with him. My eyes widened at seeing two men. Jareth and Nadir.

"Eric, stop!" Nadir yelled.

Jareth growled at seeing me in the noose. He made a crystal in his palm, ready to strike."I suggest you let Sarah go before a disaster beyond your imagination occurs." He smirked.

"Jareth... You cannot possibly understand my reasoning." Eric said, "She is only for insurance."

He then sighed and lowered his crystal. "I do understand, Eric."

"How?" He snapped back, "How can you understand?"

"I tried to do the same thing to Sarah. I used her little brother, Toby, as insurance. Yet, after the labyrinth I put her in, she defeated it in no time. I offered her her dreams, if she only agreed to let me rule her. She refused me and shattered my heart..."

I felt guilty as Jareth glanced at me with teary eyes. Now I understood why he was doing all this to me.

"The only woman I've ever loved... despises me and thinks I'm a monster..." He continued.

"Trust me, I know." Eric said, loosening the noose around my neck.

"Eric... We can start over..." Christine suggested, "Begin again... Please, give me another chance."

Eric moved his gaze to Christine. He was in deep deep thought as he looked at her. This was what Eric wanted. A chance with Christine. She was offering him her love and companionship. I smiled as I felt the binds removed from my wrists. The punjab lasso lifted over my head. I ran to Nadir and Jareth, standing in between them.

Eric then after a few moments of thinking, cleared his throat. He was ready to give the answer that would have the greatest effect on the rest of his life. I closed my eyes. The anticipation was killing me, and then I heard a single word exit out of Eric's mouth.

"No..."

I opened my eyes as I heard it and stood there in shock. Did he just say what I think he said?

Christine had tears running down her pink cheeks, "B-But why?"

Eric sighed and came closer to her, "I have already given you more than enough chances to redeem yourself, and yet you neglected them. My angel has died... she no longer exists." He told her, "I used to see her when she was the chorus girl that dreamed to be more than that. My innocent little student..."

Erik softly stroked her cheek, remembering the past.

"I see now before me, a grown woman. You've lost your dreaming personality. It was one of the most wonderful qualities about you. Once the dreamer vanished, everything else started to fade away. All the things I loved about you are gone... all gone."

Eric then stepped away from her and walked to us three. He stood next to Nadir.

Christine stared at him and the scoffed rudely at Eric. "It's your loss! I don't need you!" She yelled before walking out.

Jareth teleported us back to my room with one of his crystals. For awhile, we all just stood there, taking in everything that just happened. Christine had just broken Eric's heart... again. Eric had let Christine go... again. Jareth had just... well... I wasn't sure what Jareth had done quite yet. He certainly had made my heart ache for him. Why was my heart hurting this way? Could it be what I suspected as love?

Finally, Nadir broke the silence.

"Are you all right, my friend?"

"I'm... I'm getting there, Daroga." Eric replied, how hands shaking.

"Do you need to lie down for a moment?" Jareth suggested softly.

Eric shook his head, "I wish to speak with someone about this... I cannot hold my emotions in much longer..."

"Of course, Eric. Who do you want to talk to?"

He looked over and pointed to me.

"Sarah?" Jareth was shocked.

Eric simply nodded.

"Well then... We will leave you two alone..." Nador said, ushering Jareth out of the room.

The door then closed shut and I was alone with Eric. We stared at each other for a minute. Why our he want to talk about this with me? We had only met a few days ago, and now he was going to trust me this much. It just didn't make sense.

"Please... sit..." He told me, motioning to the bed.

I sat down on the bed and he took a seat next to me. He looked at me then started to weep. As soon as I heard his voice, I knew he was in pain. My arms wrapped around him, and he sobbed into my shoulder. This must be why he wanted to talk to me. He didn't want the other guys to see him cry. I rubbed his back gently to comfort him, as he let it all out.

When we came close to the end, Eric pulled away and stared into my eyes.

"Sarah, may I ask you something?"

I nodded, "You can ask me anything, Erik."

"Do you love Cade?"
