The Maggi story
Kunal laughed when he looked at the Maggi packets in Abir's hands. Kuhu had avoided mentioning Kunal and kitchen in the same sentence since the first time he demonstrated his kitchen skills in front of her. The look of horror on her face today when Nanu had ordered Abir and Kunal to cook was precisely due to '#Maggi horrors' that kuhu recollects whenever Kunal and cooking were mentioned in same sentence.
FLASHBACK:
The whole Rajvansh family with the exception of Kuhu and Kunal had gone to attend the wedding of a close relative. Kunal had a business meet in Kolkata for two days and Kuhu decided to accompany him. They were supposed to be back the next day morning but due to some events, they were back a day before. Since, all the other members were not home and the workers in the house were given a holiday, the couple had the house to themselves.
It was raining heavily in Rajkot. Kuhu freshened up and was speaking to Parul Ma on the phone while walking down the stairs. She accidentally skipped a stair and fell down the stairs. Luckily, she stumbled down the last few stairs. Unluckily along with a broken phone she also had twisted her ankle.
Kunal rushed out hearing the sound and was greeted with the site of Kuhu trying to get up and miserably falling back.
He gently admonished Kuhu for her carelessness and lifted her and laid her on the sofa.
He entered the kitchen, took an ice pack and placed it against her swollen ankle. Due to the heavy rain the doctor couldnot visit. He advised Kuhu bed rest until the swelling reduces and also recommended some pain killers.
Kunal sat beside Kuhu and checked if she had any other injuries. Seeing that she had scratches on her forearm, Kunal brought out the first aid box. As he was cleaning her wound, he began to reprimand her.
"Why are you so careless when coming down the stairs. Had you slipped from the earlier stairs do you know what would have happened."
"Kunal..." began Kuhu.
"Chup kuhu...ekdam chup. Do you realise how deep you could have cut your arm or how you could have hurt your back" Kunal continued to scold Kuhu, his worry evident in his scoldings.
"grrrh" The rumbling from Kuhu's stomach halted Kunal's rant.
"Hungry?" asked Kunal
Kuhu nodded her head silently accepting her hunger.
"I'll check if there is anything to eat."
As kunal prepared to go to the kitchen, Kuhu held his hand. "Even, I will come."
Kunal gave a stern look to kuhu.
"#Promise I'll just sit in the dining hall. I won't enter the kitchen. It is too lonely to wait in the hall."
Kunal sighed and he carried Kuhu and sat her down on the chairs in dining hall. He entered the kitchen. Since the family had gone out of town and they were not expecting Kuhu and Kunal to be back so soon, the fridge was stocked with only a few food items. Kuhu could have prepared something, but Kunal was a big zero in the matters of kitchen.
Luckily, he had asked one of the watchmen to get some milk. He boiled some milk. As he was about to take cocoa powder to make some hot chocolate, he remembered how his mom used to make him haldi ka doodh when he or his brother were sick.
As he rummaged the racks, he finally found what he was looking for, i.e, turmeric powder.
As a novice in the field of cooking, Kunal ended up adding two tablespoons of turmeric to the glass of milk. The colour was not the same as how Parul ma would have prepared, but Kunal felt this colour was perfect.
As Kuhu looked at haldi ka dhoodh handed over to her by Kunal, her face resembled that of a wilted flower.
'Mummy mujhe ghar jaana hai.' This was the only thought in her head. Over my dead body, #no haldi ka dhoodh and looking at the colour Kuhu could already predict the proportion of ingredients.
Before kuhu could object kunal's glare made her rethink and with great difficulty Kuhu finished the milk.
Kunal returned to the kitchen but could not find any instant snacks or ready made foods.
Left with no option, he ordered foo d from outside. To his dismay, the food would take more than an hour to be delivered. He conveyed the same to Kuhu.
"I'm still hungry." Pouted Kuhu. Kunal himself was also hungry. Kuhu also was aware of this fact.
Her face suddenly brightened when she remembered Abir Bro's and Ketu's conversation on the hidden maggi packets. Big Ben was not a fan of junk food and instant mixes, maggi were prohibited in the house. However, the rule breaker of the house made sure these were available for nightly adventures and junk craving times.
As she was reminded she wanted to hug her Abir bro for stocking maggi for emergencies.
Kunal searched the cabinets in the kitchen and finally found the packets.Looking at the lost look on his face, Kuhu did not want her stomach to suffer at the hands of Kunal's cooking.
"You can make Maggi right?" questioned Kuhu.
"Of course" answered Kunal. The look on his face sending danger signals to Kuhu.
"I will also help." Blurted Kuhu.
"It is only maggi, why will you help?" asked kunal.
'Because you are one person capable of turning maggi into kichdi.' Thought Kuhu. Lo and behold, Kunal presented her with a very soupy kichdi instead of maggi.
"that...." Kunal was embarrassed and grumpy. He too was hungry.
Kuhu lifted her hands asking Kunal to carry her into kitchen. She made herself comfortable on the table top and supervised Kunal while he made maggi for them both following her instructions.
Kuhu was aware that Kunal's cooking skills were bad but she realised that bad would be overestimating Kunal's cooking skills after she witnessed how maggi turned to kichdi.
There were several instances that made Kuhu want to give a good beating to Kunal as he was preparing maggi. Kunal would never admit to Kuhu that his actions were exaggerated, just to irritate her. She was an open book when she is irritated and several instances that day made Kunal want to turn off the stove and carry his wife back into bedroom.
That night when everyone retuned home and Parul ma was bandaging Kuhu's leg, Kuhu told her, "Parul ma, Kunal and kitchen is #big blunder. Please next time don't leave me alone to Kunal's kitchen and his cooking."
Parul masi laughed at Kuhu's words while Kunal had an embarrassed look on his face.
