Chapter 17: The Yearning of Hearts
Third Person View
~Inside Class 3-5's chatroom~
Yamazaki: So. We totally blew our exams.
Shinohara: Aww we didn't absoulutely blew it!
Mikami: Yes, you're forgetting the lucky ones who managed to rank top 50 :)
Mikami: I heard Suga's Home Ec score was pretty good. How come you never told us you were into cooking, Suga?
Tsudawari: We need to have redemption
Sonohara: The trip is next week, right? Let's just figure out something there.
Suga: Mikami you ass
Sakurai: Why don't we all pin Shiota-sensei and stab her right at her chest?
Fujinaga: Sakurai, we would have done that already if it wasn't so unfair.
Sakurai: Hey, if it works, it works
Shinohara: We need to do this with honor! Grace!
Enomoto: Ok I'll admit not brute forcing it might have an appeal to it, just so we can see her reaction
Tsudawari: Enomoto actually wanting to play fair? Is someone hijacking his phone?
Aoba: Sorry for interrupting but, is it true we're riding a train for the trip?
Minako: Yeah Aoba-kun, though we'll be taking a plane once we get to Ibaraki.
Yamazaki: Let's come up with a plan to assassinate. The trip is a week long, after all
Aoba: Ok, thanks arisato
Sunada: We can all plan after school, if everyone is free.
Enomoto: Lets do it
-Time skip-
It was Karma's colleagues' idea who suggested visiting a night club.
He was exhausted from the few days of work and meetings, and was not at all in the mood to drink. If his colleagues hadn't taken account of everyone present and not present on the trip and dragged them along for a night of fun, Karma would have already been asleep in his hotel room.
So he sat there, loud music blaring in his ears as people from his work conversed with the men and women working in the club. He took a sip of his mocktail, as he had no plan on getting intoxicated tonight and just wanted to rest for the day.
Gotou and Hoshino seemed to be in the same mindset, although the latter showed her exasperation more.
"This is ridiculous," she said after she let out an annoyed sigh. "We're wasting our time here. What benefit would this give us? We should be using this time to rest."
Gotou took a sip of his drink. "Mochizuki would retaliate by saying this is how you steam off your stress after a long day."
"Oh, I can already hear him." Hoshino rolled her eyes. "'You're so uptight, Senpai! You should get out there, shut down your system and have some fun!'" She said, imitating her former underclassman. "As if. The only thing I'd like to shut down are these... these flashy lights. Making my eyes hurt..."
In another day, maybe Karma would enjoy being here, especially with the right friends. But tonight, he couldn't agree more with Hoshino.
"I'm leaving." Karma decided, finishing the last of his mocktail.
Gotou nodded. "Wise decision. I think I will be leaving early too."
The redhead grabbed his jacket and was about to wear it when he heard a girly voice.
"Leaving so soon?"
He looked up to see one of the women from the club standing before him. Wavy hazel hair shook as she tilted her head to the side. She wore an off-the-shoulder crop top, with a black skirt that's a little too tight and small for Karma's liking to match. It was hard not to notice her voluptuous curves in that outfit. Other people might even call her beautiful.
"But your friends are all still here! Why the rush?" She giggled.
She made her way to Karma, her hips swaying from side to side, then slowly slid her hand up from his thigh to his torso. "Perhaps I can entertain you. I'm very talented, you know." She easily laid herself over his lap, her hands coming to rest around his neck. "We can do so many things, and you'd be having fun well into the night." She winked.
Karma didn't move, his expression unimpressed. He is suddenly reminded of how much he misses Nagisa and her cute smile and her cute blush and her cute everything.
His lips then curved upwards, a dangerous glint in his eyes. "Really now? I can't say I'm not interested."
He's not.
"Oh, that makes me soo happy to hear!" She smiled widely. By this point in time, usually their hands would start hovering over her, eager to touch. But this fellow hadn't moved an inch in excitement, despite him saying otherwise.
Perhaps he needed further encouragement.
She slowly took his hands and placed them on her hips, maintaining eye contact. "Let's slip away, and I'll show you a lot of my secrets..." She lowered her voice seductively.
"Uh, hello?" Hoshino stared in disbelief.
Karma narrowed his eyes. This woman's plans were predictable. Observe and pick one she likes, approach and seduce, and assumes that the person would be too drunk to refuse her offer. Who could resist a body and face like hers, right? The handsome, tall, red haired fellow would be the perfect man to spend the night with.
Unfortunately for her though, Karma was very aware of his surroundings and very sober. And he was in a very happy relationship with someone else.
"I also have a secret to share," He said with an easy smile.
"Oh? What is it?" She giggled.
Karma leaned in to whisper in her ear. "Your skirt has a big hole in it."
She immediately pulled away from him to stand up, instinctively palming her skirt. "H-huh...?" Feeling no torn fabric, she glared at Karma with a furious blush. "What the hell!"
"Oh? You didn't like my secret?" Karma smiled innocently. "It was only fair of me to share mine when you were so eager about telling me yours."
"You... you little..."
He played her like a damn fiddle! Isn't she the one that's supposed to play people?
Karma looked into her brown eyes. "I thought you wanted to whisk me away into the night?"
The woman found her composure and scowled at the man who was still sitting languidly on the long sofa. Seeing his smug face looking up at her, she walked away with a huff. "Forget about it!"
Hoshino and Gotou watched the woman disappear into the crowd.
"Uh... whoa." Hoshino managed to say. "For a second there, I thought you were actually gonna sleep with her." She looked back at the redhead to see him already standing and putting on his jacket.
"Not in a million years." Karma adjusted his tie.
Hoshino nodded. "Good, I would have hit you on the head if you ever thought about cheating on your girlfriend."
He would never betray Nagisa's trust like that. Besides, the only person he's ever wanted was her. Karma found little to no interest in other women throughout their relationship, feeling as though they paled in comparison to his blue haired angel. Each day, Nagisa always finds a way to make him love her even more.
The very thought of another woman touching him so intimately besides Nagisa is enough to make him recoil.
Gotou also stood up. "Let's go. I'm also getting sick of these lights. Unless you want to partake in nightly activities with someone?" He looked at Hoshino, who made a face of distaste.
"No, thank you. I've seen enough of women throwing themselves at men tonight." She also got up, and the three of them made their way to the exit, ignoring the calls of their other colleagues to stay.
Just a few more days, Karma thought. Then he can have Nagisa back in his arms again.
-Time skip-
"If there are no further questions, I'll end the meeting here," Yamada-sensei, the head for the upcoming school trip, closed the book he had in his hand. "Thank you all, do your best for the upcoming trip so everyone has a good time." His smile was kind as he gives a nod to everyone.
The other teachers were starting to disperse and go about their days again. Though it was hometime, teachers are obligated to stay until the sun is about to finish setting. Usually, this will be the time when students approach the teacher's room for anything they might need.
Despite the last bell ringing, the school is far from empty after hometime, as there are still students who have clubs, and those who are on cleaning duty.
Nagisa was grading some papers when she realized she forgot her dictionary back in class. "Well, I can get it later..."
She turned to her laptop to record the latest grade. As she was typing away, she couldn't help but remember about her boyfriend.
The last few days, Karma had been wanting to video chat with her during the night after work. She suspected he wanted to see her face and hear her voice again after a few days away. He didn't say it out loud and she didn't call him out for it, because in all honesty, she was in the same boat.
Coming home to a cold and empty space and knowing he was not going to be there was... disheartening, to say the least. She did not know if she could still call it home if there was no Karma in it.
Shaking her head from her thoughts, she stood up and made her way to the classroom. If only she could magically bring her dictionary back to her.
Students who were passing by gave her a wave and an enthusiastic, "Sensei!" She had grown quite popular among the students, thinking she is a kind and patient teacher who gives attention to every single one in her care. Some of them were saying how it was a shame that she wasn't assigned to their class instead, though she can't say class 3-5 shared the same sentiment.
Some of them were accepting though, while others were not. But she liked to think that they've become closer in the few months she's been here. And whether they liked her or not, she still fully intended to continue teaching and guide them through their last year here.
Upon arriving to her class, she pulled on the door to find resistance. Confused, she peered inside to see Mizuno standing in front of the door.
Mizuno, feeling someone tried to open the door, looked to see who it was. "S-Sensei!?" Her eyes were wide as she looked at her teacher.
"Mizuno-san, is something going on? I forgot my dictionary." Nagisa explained, peering inside the occupied classroom again. She found her students gathering, with Minako, Mikami, and Sonohara up front near the board, who all had their eyes on her now.
Her student opened the door slightly. "Um, well, I'm sorry Sensei, but I can't let you in."
Minako approached the door with a smile, standing behind Mizuno. "Sorry, Sensei! We're in a top secret meeting right now. Absolutely no one shall come inside except class 3-5 students!"
"Oh," was all Nagisa said. What could be so important they needed to hold a meeting? Judging from how secretive they're being, perhaps they were formulating a plan against her.
The teacher smiled. "Well, all right then. It was nothing urgent anyway. Carry on, don't stay too late, okay? The students on duty still have to clean up."
"Don't worry, we'll all clean up once we're done." Minako reassured her with a smile.
Izumi passed something to Mizuno, then Mizuno handed it over to Nagisa. "You were looking for this, right?"
"Ah, yeah. Thank you." She thanked her student, taking the small book.
"Well, excuse us for now, Sensei." Mizuno flashed her a polite smile before closing the door again.
Nagisa walked back to the teacher's room. She was quite delighted that her students are motivated to assassinate her. Though now it means that she should always be aware and expect to be schemed against.
She looked at her watch. In an hour, she'll be free to leave to meet up with Kayano for dinner. The girl had invited her to eat at a nearby restaurant.
She was glad to talk with one of her old friends again, especially knowing that Kayano always had a tight schedule. Her ever bright personality never failed to lift the bluenette's spirits up.
Later after dinner, she came over to hang out. "Aahh..." Kayano let out a satisfied sigh as she made herself at home, sprawled on the sofa in the comfort of Karma and Nagisa's apartment.
"So Karma-kun's not here?" She asked her friend.
Nagisa was brewing some tea in the kitche area. "He's on a business trip. He'll be back in two days."
Kayano hummed. "Ugh, he's been bothering you to video call him, isn't he?"
"Oh, he totally is!" Nagisa replied.
"I knew it! That guy is such a simp for you, Nagisa, I swear..."
"But I don't mind though, hearing his voice is nice..." Nagisa smiled.
She brought over the tea and turned the TV on. Kayano thanked her before lifting a cup and taking a gulp of tea.
"Oh, this is delicious," Kayano commented. She stared at her cup before her shoulders fell as she sighed tiredly. "Nagisa, can I sleep over? I'm soo lazy to go back to my apartment..."
Nagisa raised her brow. "You don't have work tomorrow?"
"I do, but the shooting starts at noon. Besides, we haven't had a sleepover in like... forever, really." The brunette looked at her friend. "Oh, I can totally take the couch! I don't think I want to sleep where Karma-kun's lain..."
Nagisa ended up laying a futon for her friend beside her and Karma's bed. She thought about laying out another so they can sleep on the floor together, or maybe she can sleep on Karma's side instead, but Kayano insisted she took the whole bed; still feeling uncomfortable at the thought. Nagisa lent her one of her pajamas, which oddly fits her friend, if not a bit loose.
When they were laying on their respective beds, the room dim with only the lamp on, Kayano spoke.
"Hey, Nagisa..."
"Hmm?" Nagisa hummed, still looking at her phone.
"I have a boyfriend now."
Nagisa's eyes widened, lowering her phone to her lap. "Shut. Up."
Kayano blushed and covered her face with her hands. "Ugh, I know! Who would've thought, right?"
"Who is it? Someone I know?" Nagisa looked at Kayano below. She gasped. "It's not Sugino-kun, is it? Or maybe Maehara-kun?"
"Oh god, no!" Her friend replied, her eyes big as she turned her head towards her. "Sugino-kun and Kanzaki-chan are having a thing now, anyway... And Maehara-kun is... no."
She blushed. "He's just someone at work..."
She then continued to tell about her new boyfriend. From her stories, he seemed like a nice guy. He wasn't after her because she was Haruna Mase, in fact, the first time they met was when she was in disguise.
Nagisa can't remember the last time Kayano was rambling about a boy. Actually, she never heard her friend talk about a boy she liked. To see Kayano blushing, in love, was refreshing to see. She was glad she had someone new to lean on.
"That's great, Kaede," Nagisa smiled. "You seem happy with him."
"Thanks, Nagisa..." Kayano smiled at her friend. She knew she would be supportive of her newfound relationship. "It's only been a month, so I'm just hoping things go well."
She smirked at Nagisa. "Speaking of going well, I have no doubt that your love life is an absolute dream!"
"W-what?"
"Oh come on! A man and woman, in love since childhood, living in the same apartment... How much more romantic can it get?" She clasped her hands together dreamily.
Kayano shifted positions to lay on her stomach. "So how's Karma-kun in bed? He's insatiable, is he?"
Nagisa's cheeks heated up, her face to the tips of her ears red. "K-Kaede!" She covered her face with her arms.
"Ohh, I get it. A secret between you two, I see, I see." She nodded, a knowing smile on her lips.
The rest of the evening was filled with idle chatter and laughter. Nagisa fell asleep with an easy mind, her secret loneliness slowly dissipating into the night.
