Chapter 14: The Strive for Success

It has been forever!! Greetings, everyone.

Third Person View

Ito does not know what her classmates are talking about, nor does she really care.

Instead of joining the conversation, the cool and quiet girl continued typing things into her phone. Her writing page had gained more followers recently, and she was replying to some comments on her new chapter she just released.

BunnyJoshi: Good job on this chapter, Momoiro-san!! I totally got goosebumps when Felicity did her speech. Looking forward to the next one!! (・'ω'・)

Ito's lips curled upwards ever so slightly, only one that was paying close attention would notice her change of mood. She replied the comment warmly.

Momoiro: Thank you!! I'm glad her speech had that effect on you. ^ o ^

Another comment caught her eye.

Shinkunn: Another great chapter, if I do say so myself. I could really feel the power when Felicity did her speech. Makes me think how far she's come

Ito's smile went even wider. She has always appreciated recurring readers who always leaves comments to share their thoughts.

Momoiro: That's definitely what I was goimg for. She's really come far now, huh? As always, thanks for commenting! (´ ∀ ' *)

On the outside, the girl may seem cold and unresponsive, but on the internet, she tended to let that side of her go.

She heard a sigh from her right. "Midterms are next week, guys! I haven't really been studying, but maybe this is the time when I really should start." Shinohara said, resting her head against her palms.

Shintani nodded with a smile. "You're right. This will be our first chance to make the assassination of Shiota-sensei easier."

"We should study together!" Shinohara suggested with a wide smile.

Yamazaki put her fingers beneath her chin. "I don't think I would be of any help teaching, though..."

"Me neither," Tsudawari added, putting his hand at the back of his head casually.

"Oh, isn't Ito-chan really smart?" Ito flinched when she heard Shinohara's words reached her ears.

"Ugh. No way are they dragging me into this." Ito grunted in her head.

Shinohara went over to Ito's desk and put her arms around the girl's neck in a hug. "Won't you teach us, Ito-chan?"

Shinohara's radiance was too bright for Ito to handle. She was blinded by the overwhelming positiveness and almost had to shield her eyes. "N... No way. I'm not good at teaching, anyway..."

"I think you should do it, Ito-san," Mikami suddenly approached with a sly grin. "What better way to spread misinformation to make them fail and take all the glory to yourself, right?"

Tsudawari narrowed his eyes at the green haired boy. "Ugh, only you would do that, you sadist."

"Wait a sec, you're a hell of a smart guy, too, Mikami. Why don't you help out?" Yamazaki pointed out as a matter of fact.

"Be careful what you ask for..." Shintani smiled at her classmate.

"Me?" Mikami turned to face Yamazaki. "Sure, I'd be thrilled to help you lost litte lambs. Right, Ito-san?" He smiled innocently.

Ito grimaced at the idea of having to teach. "Uh, I didn't have a say in this whatsoever-"

"Then it's settled!" Shinohara jumped up and down, making Ito shake from the unexpected weight as she held onto her. "Ito-chan and Mikami-kun will save us all from the exams! Yaay!"

"Yaay!" Yamazaki joined in, raising her fist upwards.

"Uh... yay?" Tsudawari unenthusiastically said, still skeptical of the idea of Mikami teaching.

"Ooh, are you guys having a study group?" Minako appeared, joining in the conversation.

"Yup! Come join in!" Shinohara beamed. "How's after school everyday, starting from tomorrow?"

"Sounds good." Mikami replied, a smile still on his face.

Ito let out a sigh. "No way this is happening..."

"Look," Ito started, brushing off Shinohara off her shoulders. "Sorry to ruin the fun, but I'm not really up for this. You guys can have your little study group without me."

The next day...

"I can't believe you guys forced me to do it anyway," Ito said, holding a book and chalk in her hands in front of the class, Mikami on the other side of the board with a smile.

Hehe," Shinohara sheepishly giggled in her desk, grinning at her.

The study group consisted not of the whole class, but those who are willing to attend. Yamazaki, Tsudawari, Sonohara, were talking amongst each other. Mizuno, Shintani, along with Minako were conversing with Izumi. In the back was, surprisingly, Enomoto and Uematsu. Fusauemon and Sunada were also quietly listening.

"Well then, shall we start with math?" Mikami suggested as he looked over to the group.

Ito closed her eyes and looked away. "I'm fine with that..."

And so, their little study group has begun their reviewing. Ito and Mikami would explain, also answering questions or repeating if they were asked.

"So you use this formula..." Ito wrote on the board, carefully writing so that it didn't make that unpleasant screeching noise. "And then we know x is 13. Got it?"

"Got it!" Mikami smiled.

"Not you."

"Got it!" Minako raised her hand enthusiastically with a grin.

Izumi looked at her brilliant and bright friend, furrowing her brows. "You don't count, Minako."

Minato, who was sitting beside his sister, let out a sigh. "She's right."

"Oh, quiet, you. Why are you here, anyway?" Minako sneered at her twin.

Shinohara, who was furiously writing down in her book, suddenly let out an enthusiastic "Ohh!", like she has discovered a big secret. "I understand now! Oh man, that felt good."

Tsudawari also looked at the board with disbelief. "You're right. You guys are... actually doing your jobs properly." He gave the two teachers a grin.

Mikami gave him a smirk. "I'm going to enjoy all the looks in your faces when you see you got all the answers wrong in the exam because we didn't teach the right formulas."

"Okay, now I don't know who to trust." Tsudawari held his head in his palms, his forehead sweating.

Hearing their continuing banter, Ito's lips twitched into a small smile as she gave a light chuckle.

"Oh! Are you laughing, Ito-chan?" Shinohara excitedly pointed out. "Such a rare sight! I will forever keep this memory close to my heart."

"You're imagining things," Ito said, despite the fact that her smile has grown.

"Oh, you're still doing it!" Minako said with a large smile of her own.

"Okay, okay, enough about me. I think we're done for today, right Mikami?" The black haired girl turned to her side, where Mikami was playing with a chalk, leaning on the board.

"You wanna call it quits? As you wish." Mikami teasingly curtseyed.

"Thanks both of you," Izumi smiled, closing her notebook and tucked it in her bag. "We're lucky to have you guys."

"We're gonna continue tomorrow, right?" Mizuno asked.

Ito looked at Mikami, who gave her a particular expression that said that she should be the one to make the call.

Well, she supposed she didn't hate teaching them. She would even admit it was fun. She enjoyed seeing their expressions when they understood something, and for someone like Uematsu, was a rare sight. She found their arguments amusing, even though they were too loud at times, what with Enomoto and Yamazaki being rowdy as usual.

She looked at the windows to the side and held her forearm. "Well... I suppose wouldn't mind."

With that, the class was dismissed. Everyone was eager to go home and spend their free time after a hard working day.

Ito was about to erase the writings on the board, until she saw Ogata still writing in his notebook. "Are you not done yet?" She asked.

"Just a bit more." Ogata replied, which Ito then nodded to.

Ogata was a quiet student compared to the rest of the class. He had a sort of calm aura around him, which Ito can appreciate considering how noisy the rest of the class can be. In a way, she can relate to him choosing to stay silent. She prefers conveying her thoughts through writing, anyway.

"I'm done," Ogata eventually said, looking up at the girl.

The girl proceeded to erase the blackboard. She could hear Ogata packing up and walking towards the door. "Man, I'm just hoping I can survive Japanese lit."

"Oh?" Ito quirked her brow. "Perhaps we'll cover Japanese lit. tomorrow then. Besides, it's easy once you understand the history behind it."

"Yep, I'm sure." Ogata sighed. "It's just that I'm kinda tired of memorizing, especially because it's something so... boring."

Ito kept cleaning the board. "Well, no one said having a bright future will be easy. This is all part of the process," Ito mused, closing her eyes for a few moments. "We gotta fight our way through the bad days to earn the best days of our lives. ...Something like that."

She noticed Ogata hadn't replied for a while and looked at him to find his eyes wider than usual. "Uh. Something I said?"

He then shook his head, readjusting his bag on his shoulder. "Nothing." He looked at her again. "It's just that what you said reminded me of something I read."

Ito's heart dropped. But the one she was quoting was... "...Something you... read?"

Ogata nodded. "Yeah. A story I found online. I'm pretty fond of it, actually. There's this character named Felicity who did this speech before they clashed for the final battle of a war... What you said reminded me of that scene."

Ito was sweating now. Nervously sweating. She wanted to crawl into a hole, for the ground to suck her up, never seeing the light of day again. "You're kidding, right? What are the odds of him being one of my readers?" She cursed in her head.

"O-oh." Ito feigned innocence. "Must be some story."

Ogata nodded approvingly. "Yeah. The author's name is Momoshiki."

...

Ito processed what he said and slowly looked at him. "Momo... shiki?"

That's not her username. Her username is Momoiro.

...

"Don't tell me..." Ito narrowed her eyes at him. "He read the kanji for 'iro' wrong?"

...

"Hasn't it ever crossed your mind that it was pronounced... Momoiro?" Ito deadpanned.

Ogata thought about it.

"Now that I think about it, it is probably Momoiro, huh?" He tucked his chin on his fingers. "I've been reading that author since, what... 6th grade? I guess I must've gotten the kanji wrong back then and just went with Momoshiki..."

Now Ito really wanted to disappear. God can take her now and she would gladly allow it.

6th grade? He's been reading her stories from 6th grade?

"No, this is bad..." Ito started sweating even more. "The things I wrote back in 6th grade... were stupidly, ultimately, worryingly cringey."

She needed to get out of here. Scream in her pillow, roll around her bed, anything. Nothing would top this embarrassment she's feeling.

"Wait, so you know Momoshiki? Or, er, Momoiro?"

She flinched. No way could she let him know that she was his admired online author. The way she acted there was nothing how she acted in real life. That would actually be the end of her if he ever found out.

"I... I've only heard of her‐ er, them," Ito squeaked.

Ogata nodded. "I see. You should definitely check them out."

"Yeah, maybe I will." She needed to end this conversation fast. She quickly erased the remaining writings on the board, and picked up her bag.

"Well, see you, Ogata."

Who was he? Ito started recalling usernames that were avid readers of hers. Yorimori? Shinkunn perhaps? Kiira, or maybe BunnyJoshi? But Ito couldn't see Ogata as BunnyJoshi, though. They didn't act like one another.

No, she didn't have the right to say that when she herself is what she's describing.

Maybe he was one of those silent readers who never comments and observes from afar? Ito has no idea. He could be anyone, really.

She really needs to scream in her pillow now.

Elsewhere...

Mizuguchi does not understand why everyone has been so worked up lately.

He was walking out of his classroom, where a few students had taken their time to study with one another. Even Enomoto joined in, and also Uematsu, who he never thought had a care for his grades. Ito and Mikami were teaching, and he could already hear them talking up front.

He passed by some of the girls in his class talking about studying in the library. Sakurai was included with them, talking loudly with Mizuno. Ueno didn't want to hang out because she wanted to go home and study after archery was done.

Outside near the gates was Suga who leaned on the wall, playing on his phone. "Yo," he greeted Mizuguchi.

"Hey," Mizuguchi answered, putting his hands in his pockets. "Heading home?"

Suga looked up. "Oh, not yet. Y'know, the usual. Heading to my sis's daycare." He typed something in his phone. "Also thinkin' about askin' her some things..."

"What kind?"

He stayed quiet for a while, and then spoke in a hushed voice. "About Home ec..."

...

"Look, Home ec is the only exam I can at least get a 7 on, all right!?" He suddenly got defensive, his cheeks reddening as he looked at his friend.

Mizuguchi groaned. Even Suga has been infected by the study bug.

"Whatta 'bout you?" Suga asked, putting his phone away and pushed himself off the wall.

Mizuguchi then slinged his bag on his shoulder and walked the other way. "I'm goin' home. And doing anything but read books."

"Ah." He heard Suga say before walking further from the school.

As he treaded on the sidewalk, he looked ahead and his thoughts inevitably went to the blue-haired teacher. Since when had everyone fallen for her trap, playing her little game? He didn't understand why everyone was trying so hard.

"Hmph. Seems like the teach has made everyone a little soft."
