"Uh- hi." I walked into Alec and I's office the next night, messing with the bandage on my wrist, dressed in sweatpants and one of his sweaters, "How long was I out?"

Alec looked at me, "15 hours."

"Oh-" I rubbed the back of my neck, my voice quiet, "That's uhm- long."

"I didn't wake you." Alec looked back down at his work, not greeting me with a kiss like he usually would, "I thought you could use the sleep."

"Well, I- have something to show you." I slowly walked toward him, undoing the bandage on my wrist to reveal the tattoo I had impulsively gotten before the dinner last night, thinking that it would make me feel better, "I- got your name- like you do of mine."

Alec stares at it, and doesn't say anything.

"I thought that- it'd make me feel more connected to you." I stared at him, wanting to get something out of him, "Jonathan and I have a life binding rune, but- when you got yours, you told me since the ink was permanent, so were we-"

Alec looked from the tattoo, to me, then back to the tattoo, pressing his lips against it for a few moments, then looked back at his work, "I like it."

"Alec." I sigh, "I'm sorry- about the little- outburst-"

"It wasn't just a little outburst- and, it's been consistent." Alec looked at me, "You said some things, Zee."

"That wasn't me- okay, it was- all of the tequila-" I put my messy hair behind my ears, "I've been- terrible to you- and I'm so- so sorry I ruined our dinner- you were being a sweetheart and I ruined it-"

Alec stares, "It's not the dinner I'm worried about."

"Hey-" Jace knocked on the door, making Alec and I look back, "Is now a bad time?"

Alec began, getting up, "Actually-"

"No- no, you're good." I cut him off, lightly shaking my head, "What's up?"

Clary walked in, Magnus walking in behind them as he was already on his way in, "On the hunt, we came across a Drevak demon."

"Yeah, which is weird, right?" Jace questioned, "They usually keep to the sewers."

Alec crosses his arms, "Maybe the holiday noise is drawing them out."

"Yeah, it could be." Jace nodded, "The streets are packed with idiots in costumes."

"What? Hey-" I reached and hit his arm, "I used to be one of those idiots."

Jace remarks, both him and Alec snickering at me, "Shocker."

"What? I love Halloween." I was defensive, "I used to do Halloween makeup- I'd make it look like a surgery gone wrong or something-"

Clary nods once, "She was very good-"

"I love Halloween, too." Magnus softly smiles, speaking before realizing, "Every year, I would use my magic to decorate an entire city block in Brooklyn-"

Then he sighs, the look on his face making my heart break, "Fond memories."

"Brief ops on the demon." Alec instructed to them.

"Uhm, hey- Magnus-" I caught his hand, following him out into the hall, "You know, Maryse has been dying for somebody to help her decorate her new shop- she's asked me a few times but, I've been too busy-, I know it's not a Halloween block party, but what do you think?"

"I suppose I do have an eye for design." Magnus softly smiles, "Will you be joining us?"

"Maybe later." I took a step back, "Yeah, I have this meeting I can't miss- it's Clave business."

-

"Who would you like to commune with, my dear?" The old woman felt around when I walked into her shop, "A long-lost relative? A fallen friend-"

"Asmodeus." I cut right to the case, my hands in the pockets of my leather jacket, "Prince of Edom."

"I'm sorry-" She began, "I don't understand."

"Oh, quit it." I snip, "Don't you think the whole blind fortune-teller thing is a little bit tired?"

I continued, "Look, I know you're a warlock, and your power to channel spirits is real- so, are you gonna help me or not?"

"Channeling demon royalty, that's quite a request." She sat down, "It'll cost extra."

I roll my eyes and tossed the coins onto the table, as she nods, "Very well. I will try to channel Asmodeus- but, he will only come if he desires it."

"Whatever, just- do it." I sat down as well, watching as she recited a spell, her voice sounding demonic, until Asmodeus appeared in front of me, having the reflection of the old lady in the mirror.

"Zee Lillian Young." He addressed me.

I stare at him, "You know who I am?"

"Of course." He looked around, nodding lightly, "Clever idea, calling on me this way."

"My boyfriend would've killed me if I let another Greater Demon get loose." I crossed my arms, "I needed a way to speak to you- so I found one."

He questions, "And how is my son?"

"Miserable." I said, "He won't accept it- but, I know he'll never be himself again without his magic- it makes him who he is, and I, out of anyone should understand that when he got his magic back to make me feel whole again."

"I can't watch him suffer any longer." I exhale slowly, "So, please, if you ever cared about Magnus, return what you stole."

"What I stole?" He sprayed, "My son gave me his powers willingly- to save your best friend, and god how pathetic."

"It's not pathetic- it was a selfless act." I sat up, "I would've done it for him in a second-"

"An act he already regrets." He taunted me, "Immortals aren't meant to grow wrinkled and grey- in time, Magnus will come to resent you, until the bitter end."

"I'm here to prevent that- alright?" I pressed, "To get him his magic and his immortality back- so he'll be happy."

"Fine- I'll restore both, under one condition." He gave me a choice, "End your friendship."

My heart shattered, "What?"

"You are the source of all his suffering- you're the reason he keeps helping the Shadowhunters- you make him vulnerable, weak." He snipped at me, "With you, he'll never reach his full potential."

"You're wrong." My voice was quiet, "He's- my family- one of my best friends, and I can't just abandon him."

He inhales, "Then I'm afraid you will be the death of him."

"Magnus would never agree to it." I shot back.

"Don't give him the choice- in fact, Magnus can never know about our little arrangement, or else the deal is off." He said, "Break his heart to save his life."

-

"Hey, are you okay?" Jace quietly said to me, snapping me out of my thoughts, "You look upset-"

"I'm fine- yeah," I clear my throat lightly, "I'm just- I have a lot on my mind right now- but, it's nothing-"

"I ran some tests on Jonathan's blood." Isabelle said, "The heavenly fire serum caused a reaction that purged all of its demonic essence."

Alec questions, "So, injecting Jonathan will burn away all his demon blood?"

"And his demonic connection with Zee." Isabelle's words made my heart leap with joy, "We've finally found a way to separate you from your brother."

Tears started to burn in my eyes, ones that were of happiness as I quickly hugged Isabelle tightly, "I'm so ready to just be connected to you again-"

"Not as ready as I am." Isabelle squeezes me tight, before pulling away, her hands on my arms, "I missed you."

I blink a few times, "What do you mean?"

"I haven't seen you smile in a while." Isabelle softly smiled at me, "It feels good seeing you smile again."

"So, once we remove the Twinning rune, he won't have any influence over you-" Jace smiles at me, "He won't be able to hurt you-"

I inhale slowly, then looked at Isabelle, "What will the injection do to him?"

"It will hurt- a lot, you'll feel it, too." Isabelle answered, "But- only until the connection breaks, after that, both of you will be fine."

Clary nods at me, "Let's do it?"

"Yeah-" I began, letting out a sharp breath.

Luke's voice filled our ears, "Kiddo?"

"Oh my god-" I walked toward him, hugging him immediately when I saw him, "Hey- you're here-"

Jace looked at him, "How did you get out of prison?"

"The Praetor Lupus pulled some serious strings." Luke told us, "I'll tell you the whole story later- right now, I'm just here to support my daughter."

I softly smiled, pulling back from the hug, "Thanks-"

"Glad to have you back, Luke." Isabelle smiles.

"We'll meet you downstairs." Alec nodded, walking out of the room without another word.

My eyes followed him, as I quickly looked between them, "Hey- uhm, look- this is great and all- but, my boyfriend is very mad at me- I have to go fix that-"

Luke gave me a smile, ruffling my hair, "Go-"

"Thank you-" I gave them a thumbs up, before rushing after Alec, "Hey! Hey, wait-"

Alec slowed down to a stop at the sound of my voice, looking back at me, silent.

"Uhm, look- I owe you a proper apology." I stopped in front of him and grabbed his hands, "I know- I haven't been the best girlfriend lately, god- I've been the worst, and the rune- and drinking- that is no excuse for that okay."

Alec sighs, "Zee-"

"No, let me finish- okay, you've been- nothing but amazing to me, and all I've been is unappreciative- and ignorant, just- trying to pull away from all your support in general." I continued, "I'm sorry- and- I will be better- after I get this rune off me? Everything's gonna be okay, I mean- Luke's back, and- we have a serum-"

"This rune has been the source of all my problems recently, and once it's gone- I'll be your Zee again. I'll be myself- and, I'll be better- I'll be better for you." I was really trying, "I promise you. I swear-"

Alec stares at me for a few moments, before grabbing my face and pressing his lips into mine gently.

-

"They're trying to tear us apart, little sister." Jonathan's voice made my heart ache when I sat down in the chair, his eyes glued to me.

I looked at him, "I know."

Jonathan tries, "Well, you can still stop it."

"If I wanted to, I would've by now." I put my hair behind my ears, sitting up in my chair.

"Zee, you're making a terrible mistake." Jonathan stares at me, "None of these people care about you the way that I care about you-"

"Enough!" Luke cuts, "Alec, gag him."

"Zee-" Jonathan begged, as Alec gagged him, his words now muffled, "Zee, please- don't let them do this!"

I stared at him, my eyes glued until Jace places a hand on my back, my head snapping towards him, "Hey, it's okay- don't pay attention to him."

"We're all here." Alec came next to me, grabbing my hand, "I'm not gonna leave your side."

I nodded lightly at Alec, Isabelle holding the serum ready, "Here we go."

Alec looks at me, "Zee, are you ready?"

"Do it." I nodded towards Isabelle, watching as she injected the serum right into Jonathan's rune.

It took a few moments, but I felt the pain.

And god, was it terrible.

I grunted, squeezing Alec's hand tightly, trying to tough it out, but it wasn't long until I let out an ear piercing scream, my head hitting the back of my seat.

Clary's eyes widen, "What's happening to her?"

"Is it supposed to be this bad?" Jace questions.

"I'm fine!" I forced myself up, my jaw clenched, my body tensed, taking a few steps, "I'm-"

Another scream left my lips, Alec wrapped his arms around me to comfort me when I could barely stand due to the pain.

"She's burning up-" Alec felt my forehead, then rubbed my back, "Shh- it's okay, I'm right here-"

Jace was panicked, "Izzy, please, you gotta stop this-"

Isabelle was too, "I can't-"

"Just a little bit longer, kiddo." Luke told me.

My eyes landed on Jonathan, gripping onto Alec's shirt tightly, his eyes turning black the moment I made eye contact with him, the pain I felt instantly going away, as I collapsed right into Alec, breathing heavy.

He saved me from the pain.

"I got you-" Alec held me up, then looked at the rune that hadn't faded, "It didn't work-"

"The formula must be too weak." Isabelle covered her face for a few moments, "I have another idea."

"Each vial of serum contains nanoparticles of Glorious." Isabelle said, "I can separate the particles out and use them to create a new, more potent formula."

Jace asks, "How long will that take?"

"At least a few hours." Isabelle sighs.

-

"Are you sure you're okay to patrol?" Isabelle asked me when we walked through the alleys, kids running around in their costumes, "After what just happened-"

"I'm fine." I replied to her, looking around, "It's nothing I couldn't have recovered from."

"I'm sorry- about the serum." Isabelle sighs, "It kills me that you have to be connected to Jonathan for another second- I promise I'll work harder."

"You don't have to." I looked around, "Honestly, I've reached a point where I don't mind being connected to him."

"Really?" Isabelle stops, "After everything that monster has done to you? You out of all people have the right to want him gone more then anyone else."

I stopped as well, "Jonathan is not a monster."

"What?" Isabelle stares at me, as Jace and Alec slowly inched closer to us, their eyes on me.

"He was rejected by my parents- and had to deal with the suffering of living with Lilith- in Edom." I stared at her, starting to grow angry, "He's- a victim-"

Clary repeats, "A victim?"

"This isn't you talking." Jace stopped by us, staring at me, "It's the rune."

"All you do is blame the rune- maybe it's what I actually think?" I started to raise my voice, "Jonathan- is the way he is because of what my parents did to him- god, I understand him more than any of you do-"

"Zee-" Isabelle grabbed my arm.

"Don't touch me!" I pulled myself from her grasp, shouting, "You're all sickening- and inhumane-"

"Hey." Alec stepped in front of me, grabbing my face, my eyes locking with his, "Look at me."

"Focus on me- on my voice, think about us, okay?" Alec didn't let me pull away from him, "Focus on how much I love you- and how much you love me."

My breathing slowed, staring at him.

The anger disappeared.

I slowly looked down at my rune, pulling my shirt to the side lightly to look at it, as it was igniting as it did every time I lashed out on them.

I pulled back from them, pulling out one of my kindjals, "I'm going to crave it out myself-"

"No!" Alec grabbed my wrist, "Zee, no."

"I can't live like this, anymore, Alec!" I stared at him, tearing up, "I'm unintentionally- hurting the people that I love- and getting closer and closer to the dark side-"

Jace panics, "Zee, don't do it- it'll kill you!"

"Zee, stop-" Clary's eyes were wide.

"Zee, I'm worrying on a serum, okay- a stronger serum-" Isabelle tried, "Please- please, be patient with me-"

"And what if that serum doesn't work?" I looked between them, "What're we going to do then, huh? Someone tell me- anyone?"

When no one replies, Alec snatches the kindjal out of my hand, his voice stern, "We won't let you do it."

-

"What was on your mind earlier?" Isabelle quietly asked me as we walked together, after leaving everyone to continue patrolling, "You've been brooding more than usual-"

"I don't- brood-" I looked at her when she says this, "Alec broods- I don't-"

"Some say that after a while couples start to resemble each other." She shrugged lightly, "Come on- I can feel something's off, what's up?"

I stared at her for a few moments, then sighed, coming to a stop, "Look, you can't tell anyone- okay?"

Isabelle slowly nods, "What is it?-"

"Magnus- I just, seeing him like this- suffering- because he wanted to help me? To make me feel whole again- he freed Jace so I didn't lose my best friend, and then almost died when he got his magic back to make me feel whole- so I could feel my abilities- our parabatai connection." I sigh quietly, "I couldn't take it any longer- so, I- spoke with Asmodeus."

Isabelle eyes widen, "You did what?-"

"I didn't summon him, I spoke to him through a warlock conduit-" I hugged myself, my voice going quiet, "He said he would restore Magnus's magic, but- only if I cut ties with him."

"Zee," Isabelle took a step closer to me, "You're not considering it, are you?"

"I am- actually." I scoff lightly to myself, "I told- Asmodeus that, if I ever got the chance, I would do the same thing for him, so that he could feel whole like he did me, and this- this is my chance-"

"He wouldn't want this, Zee-" Isabelle said to me, "He loves you so much- you're family to him-"

"I know." I looked down, "But, family can't be compared to his magic. His magic makes him- who he is, and if I have a choice to restore him of that? I'm gonna do it."

-

"Hey, Magnus-" I slowly walked into the shop, looking around, "Where's Maryse?"

"She retired for the night- she left me the keys so I can keep working." Magnus told me, "You know I'm a perfectionist-"

I looked at him, staying quiet.

"You okay? You seem- upset?" Magnus noticed my rune, "Biscuit- oh, I'm so sorry-"

"I'm not- upset, about that- I just- I needed to talk to you." I rubbed the back of my neck, "I don't- think I can be friends with you anymore."

"What?" Magnus' voice went quiet, "Biscuit- why- would you ever say that?"

"Don't think I don't notice how much you're suffering." The look on his face made my heart ache, "You don't think I feel guilty?"

"This- this is why you're doing this?" Magnus came closer to me, "I- I'm sorry, I don't want you to feel guilty- it was my choice- I'll do better-"

"No, Magnus." I took a step back, "You- are a constant reminder of what I did wrong, do you know the kind of pressure that puts on someone? Every time I look at you, I'm reminded of how badly I screwed up- and ruined your life- and everyone else's-"

Magnus shook his head, in denial, "God, Biscuit- what're you doing? You- wouldn't do this, you told me that you can't lose family- I'm- I'm family, we're family-"

"And you told me that you were nothing without your magic- I can't- handle the guilt, Magnus." I looked away, trying to walk past him, "I'm sorry-"

"I've lost everything- I've lost my home, my job, my power." Magnus grabbed my hand, "I can't lose you, too, Zee- I can't."

"I'm sorry." I teared my hand away from his and left the shop, covering my mouth to hold back a sob.

-

[ alec's pov ]

"Isabelle, over here." I called out to her, staring at what I had found, then looking at her where she talked to Simon and Becky.

"The boss is calling." She told them, before walking towards me, leaving them.

I pointed down at the Orb, "I think I know what's causing our Drevak problem.l

"Is that a Cibus Orb?" Isabelle crouched.

I nodded lightly, "Someone's been leaving demon bait around town-"

As Isabelle puts the Orb into an evidence bag, I pulled out my phone, my eyes glued to the text from my girlfriend, "Hey, uh- Zee needs me-"

"Alright, go-" Isabelle nodded, standing up, "I'm gonna head back to the Institute- since, someone's leaving demon bait all over town, so- I'm gonna test this orb for prints, maybe I can ID the culprit."

"Alright, I'll catch up-" I walked away from her and into the alley, stopping when I caught a fire message meant for me.

It was from Jonathan.

-

[ zee's pov ]

"Hi-" I walked toward Alec, sniffling, having stopped crying by now, redness rimming my eyes, "Jace- and I- we're closing in on the nest, I just- thought we'd need backup-"

"Yeah, yeah- uhm-" Alec nodded lightly, "Okay-"

"Are you okay?" I stared at him, my eyes squinting, "You look stressed-"

"Actually- that's what I came here to talk about." Alec began to say, "I've been feeling a little overwhelmed- and, to be honest, I need a break."

"A break?" I blinked once, then nodded slowly, "I- okay, I don't think- it'd be great for both Heads to be out on vacation- but, I could- portal us anywhere, maybe Paris? I know you said you wanted to have a picnic by the Eiffel Tower-"

"No, Zee." Alec hesitantly looked into my eyes, and it was then I could feel the distance and tension between us, "I need a break from us."

I never thought he'd leave me.

"You- you, what?" My voice fell quiet, breaking at his words, "Is this about last night? Because I swear- I swear, I'm going to quit drinking-"

"This isn't about your drinking." Alec stopped me, "It's about what you said."

"You said that- you weren't my Zee anymore- and you were tired of pretending- that you were happy with me." Alec's tone made my heart shatter more, "All I've ever wanted is to make you happy, and- turns out- I haven't been-"

"Alec, I was drunk." I tried to excuse my words so he didn't take it so close to heart, "I was being dramatic, I don't- actually- think that-"

"No, you were being honest." Alec cut me off, staring at me, "I know the difference- especially since this isn't the first time we've had an argument like this."

This makes me go quiet.

"You said that this was the worst that it's ever gotten between us, and that being in this relationship was like waiting for a ticking bomb to go off- so, it would all be over." Alec said, "I'm putting us out of our misery."

"Look, I'm- I'm going through a lot, and I know I've been- horrible to you-" I stammered, tears starting to fill my eyes, "But- your solution, to break up, how is that going to fix anything?"

"There is no fixing this." Alec's words were like a knife to my heart, "You said there's nothing I can do to make it better-"

"Honey-" I reached and grabbed his hands; desperate, "It's not your job to make it better-"

"Well, what am I supposed to do?" Alec pulled away from my touch, "Just stand by and watch you suffer for the rest of our lives?"

"You told me that you needed me." My voice broke, tears falling free from my eyes, feeling like my whole world was shattering in front of me, "You told me, that you were trying so hard to keep me at bay because you wanted me- darkness or not- you said that you loved me-"

His words hurt, "I didn't know then, that spark inside of you, the one I fell in love with, was out for good."

I choked up, "Alec-"

"I tried- I tried, so hard with you- I wanted to help you, Zee. I want to cling to the thought that the woman I loved was still in front of me, but- you were right." Alec started to walk past me, not being able to look at me anymore, "You're not my Zee anymore."

"No, no, no-" I turned, and grabbed his hands, "Please, don't leave me-"

"I'm at my breaking point-" I cried, pushing myself onto my tippy toes to try and meet his height, grabbing his face with my hands, but he closed to his eyes to not meet mine, "You're the only thing keeping me together- I can't lose you, I can't- bear- that kind of pain right now, not ever-"

"You're my other half." I was crumbling beneath him, my voice breaking with every word, "I- want to marry you- I- want to grow old with you, I want to spend the rest of my life with you-"

"Just- just, stay- okay?" I pushed myself higher, pressing my lips into his; desperately trying to get him to give back.

Alec slowly kissed back, grabbing my face, the kiss slow and passionately, as if this was the last time he would ever kiss me.

When he pulled back, I could only muster out two words, "Please stay."

"Zee- I can't." Alec took a step back, "I'm sorry."

Tears broke from my eyes again, as I walked him walk away, feeling like I could no longer breathe.

With how hard I was crying, I couldn't.

I completely collapsed, Jace rushing up and catching me, holding me tight against his chest, going down with me, as he had heard the whole thing, "Hey, hey- I got you- it's alright, I'm here-"

-

"I can handle it from here." Jace had a hand on my back after I had insisted we continued to do our job, "You should go home- get some rest."

"I don't have a home anymore- I'm probably going to be demoted, too." I huffed lightly, pulling out my kindjals, "I'll just- admit back at the Institute when we get this done."

"Look, you can stay in my room-" Jace pulled out his blade, "We can- do things to get your mind off it-"

I let down my guard and looked at him, "What?"

"What? Oh- god," Jace immediately shook his head, "That is not what I meant- I was thinking- movies- or something- maybe train-"

"Right-" I sniffled, my eyes stopping on something, "Jace, those are Drevak eggs."

"The queen must be nearby." Jace held up his guard, looking around, "Stay on the look out-"

It was silent for a few moments, until a demon landed between us, knocking me through the wall and a few rooms away, as I fell into the broken stone and cement with a grunt, hearing Jace's shout, "Zee!-"

Everything went black for a moment.

But, then my eyes slowly opened, this time I wasn't covered in dust and pieces of the wall, I was surrounded by white.

I slowly got up, blinking a few times to focus my vision, Jonathan standing a few feet away from me, "Hello, sister."

I took a step toward him, until I heard a shout of my name from behind me, this time, Isabelle's, "Zee!"

I looked back, seeing Jace, Isabelle, Clary and Alec.

"Join me." Jonathan held his hand out.

"No, Zee, don't!" Jace shouted at me.

Alec's voice followed, "Don't do it-"

I grabbed Jonathan's hand.

-

"Hey, hey-" Jace rushed over to me when I walked out by him after he had killed the Queen, brushing pieces of cement out of my hair, "Are you okay?"

"I'm great." I looked at him, not phased, "Don't worry- I'm just a little bruised."

Jace looked guilty, "I'm so sorry-"

"Why are you apologizing?" I questioned.

Jace shook his head lightly, "Because I shouldn't have ever left your side-"

"Relax, okay?" I pushed myself up onto my tippy toes and hugged him, "I'm all good."

Jace hugged back tightly for a few moments, before pulling away, nodding just lightly, starting to walk with me, "Are you okay? What did you see on the other side of that wall?"

"Uhm-" I trial off, "Nothing but darkness."

Jace pulled out his phone when he was buzzing, answering, "Izzy, what's up?"

"The demon attacks were a diversion." Isabelle's voice filled the line, "I think some Seelie nymph is trying to break into the sub cells to get to Jonathan-"

I join in, "What?"

"When I went to go check the cells, Jonathan wasn't there- I think he outsmarted them some how, but- the entire Institute is on lockdown." Isabelle said, "You need to get back here-"

"Hang on." Jace told her, his back to me as I picked up a rod from the ground, "We're coming."

When he turns, I slammed the rod against his head, knocking him to the ground, flipping it in my hand.

He touched his bleeding head, looking at me from the ground, "Zee?-"

"Alec should've listened to me when I said he was the only thing keeping me from going off the edge." I slowly crouched to meet his level, "Well, I guess him dumping me did do me some good."

Jace's eyes barely widen due to not being able to keep them open, "You're-"

"That's right." I softly smirked, pushing some hair out of his face, "Don't worry- nothing an Irazte can't fix- but, this way- it'll give me enough time to get to Jonathan."

"Zee, no-" Jace's voice broke when I tossed the rod to the side, opening up a portal and going right through.

The moment I came out of the portal, I decapitated the Seelie that was going to hurt Jonathan, as he looked down at me with slight wide eyes, "Zee-"

"Don't worry, Jonathan." I slowly let my arm down, "I won't let anyone hurt you."

Jonathan's lit up, "You came for me."

authors note:

okay, so I'm gonna clear some confusion if there is any, jonathan sent the fire message to alec when he broke out, so it's not when he's locked up, so the institute was gradually going into lockdown, yk? none of them were aware until isabelle got back because they weren't at the institute.

also, you guys find out what the fire message says when zee does ahahahah

but, omg i cried so hard writing this chapter
