Chapter-5 *First day in New York* (part-2)✔
Brooklyn is New York City's most populous borough and the second largest in the area. Like Manhattan, Brooklyn is made up of neighborhoods -- each with their own culture and history. It is home to many great restaurants, shops and cultural institutions, making it a wonderful place to visit when you come to New York City.
I obviously Googled it as I have no idea about this town. I also searched about the places I should visit in Brooklyn. But first of all, I have to find an Indian restaurant. Yup, I wanted Indian food. So, using Google once again, I searched up the best Indian places in Brooklyn. I found Gandhi Fine Indian Cuisine on Bedford Avenue, as well as its directions.
Suddenly, my phone started ringing.
"Hello?" I began without checking caller ID.
"Hey, you stupid nuts." Mahi giggled on the other line.
Ah! Mahi and her weird names.
"Stupid nuts? Seriously Mahi? And why are you calling me this time?"
I asked while glancing at my watch.
"What do you mean?' It must be morning there," Mahi said.
"Yeah, here it is, but over there, it's midnight. Why are you calling so late? What's wrong?" I asked concerned.
"Umm, I was missing you," she whispered, "And I thought I should call you earlier but then remembered the time distance."
"You can call me anytime silly, and I'm missing you too," I pressed my lips together, truly meaning everything I said.
I really did miss her.
"Yeah, and that's the reason why you haven't been online," she sounded slightly angry.
Shit!
"Oh, I forgot, wait I'm coming," I replied in a rush tone.
"No wa-"
I hung up before I could hear anything else, then logged onto Skype and found her already online. I clicked on the green button to call her.
"Hey," I greeted her once again.
"You hung up on me," she huffed, faking her anger.
She wasn't very good at it, which made me chuckle slightly.
"I didn't have choice." I smirked.
"Whatever." She rolled her eyes.
"Anyways, what's up? Have you talked to your dad?" I asked.
She suddenly gave me her hundred-watt smile, forgetting everything.
"Yeah, I did, and you know what? I love you so much, Jazz . . . I don't know why I hadn't tried it before . . . I should have at least asked. They are not that bad as I thought," she said making a face. "Maybe I was just scared . . ."
"Okay, hold on . . . can you explain to me exactly what happened? And you can thank me later. Just saying." I winked again.
"Very funny, now listen . . . Well, I told my dad that I want to continue my studies . . . And I skipped the 'RJ' part. I know he will never allow me to become a Radio Jockey. Anyways, I just said I want to pursue my Master's. I want to be highly qualified. Blah, blah, blah . . . Let me just make this short and simple . . . He agreed." She sighed.
"As in 'agree?'" I asked shockingly.
"There's more," Mahi added a moment or two later.
You could've easily mistaken her as one of those advertisement hosts.
"Obviously . . . continue," I nodded, turning away from that random train of thought.
"He said he has some conditions."
"Conditions?" I asked suspiciously.
"Yeah, I can do any course I wanted to do, but if they find a match for me, I have to drop that course and get married." She shrugged.
Ah! Indian parents and their conservative thinking.
"What the hell? That's unfair." I said furiously.
"It's okay, Jazz. I already agreed anyways. But can't you see it’s better? I actually got permission to continue my studies. I don't know how long it will go, but I guess it's better than nothing," she said while doing one of her sad smiles.
"Hmm, you are right . . . And maybe after seeing your dedication towards your studies, he'll change his mind?" I said hopefully.
"Maybe, but I am okay with this," she paused, "Oh and by the way, I went to college today to submit my admission form, and God, I missed you so much there. You know, I suck at filling those damn forms. I don't know how, but I managed." She yawned.
I missed you too!
"I'm really happy for you and I'm glad you have finally realized the true and great value of my presence!" I chuckled and then looked at her closely. "You look tired Mahi, go to sleep."
"Hmm, yeah I better go. Wait, hang on, I forgot to ask. How are you doing there?"
"Fine, I found an Indian restaurant. I was just about to go there. You know, I wish you were here so that we could hang out together."
"Are you are going alone?" she asked and I nodded.
"Wow, so brave," she laughed.
"What's so funny?" I asked confused.
"Never mind, nothing, you carry on . . . And make some friends while you're at it," she said and smirked. "I'm going to sleep now . . . Bye, goodnight and take care, brave girl." She went offline before I could say another word.
What was that? I shrugged and felt happy for her. I closed the laptop and decided to go to that Indian restaurant.
I wore my favorite light blue jeans and dark blue top gifted by the one and only, Mahi. I didn't like to wear heels so I wore some sports shoes instead, and to end the look, I tied my hair up into a ponytail.
I looked in the mirror and when I was satisfied with my looks, I grabbed my wallet, my phone, my ID card and my passport. I locked the door and went outside.
Suddenly, my phone started ringing again and I pulled it out from my back pocket. It was Roy.
My lips turned into upward direction when I noticed the familiar warmth inside. I swiped my thumb over the screen to answer it.
"Hey, big boy."
"Hello Di," Roy said, sounding sad.
"What's wrong?" I stopped dead in my tracks when I noticed his voice.
"Nothing's wrong. It's just exams are starting tomorrow... and I don't know why, but I'm kind of freaking right now... and I don't know what to do... Di, what if I got-"
I interrupted him and said, "Nothing will happen. My bro is a genius. He will surely rock it."
"But Di-"
"No but, only jatt," I replied and laughed at our Indian joke.
I heard him chuckling and felt relieved. "I miss you Di," he said and I gulped the lump in my throat. "I know I've never said that but it was nice growing up with someone like you... someone to lean on... someone to count on... You are the best sister in the world."
A tear escaped from my eye.
"Roy... I miss you too," I choked out.
I heard a sob and realized he was also crying so I wiped the tears away and took a deep breath.
Then, I stifled a laugh and said, "I told you... You will miss me more. See, you can't even handle your exam tension without me."
"Yeah... now no one is here who will make coffee for me at 2 a.m."
"I think you should learn making it by yourself," I suggested.
"Already started Di. Your brother is multi-talented," I heard his teasing tone and chuckled.
"Okay, that's great! How was it?" I asked.
"Um, it was good but..."
"Mine is best, right?" I smirked.
"Yeah... no doubt. Anyways Di, I'm running out of balance, so I'll Skype you later, okay?"
"Sure! I'm also going outside to buy a new number so it would be less expensive making international calls. See you later," I replied and started walking again.
"Okay, Di. Bye." He hung up.
I smiled and felt better.
I started walking confidently towards the bus stop thanks to Google for creating such a great application called Google Maps. Otherwise, everything would be so much harder to find and eventually, everybody will die since they get lost.
Wow, I never realized how important Google Maps was until this very moment. I kept walking. The streets were vaguely empty, leaving me scared to my soul.
Ugh, I am so stupid. I should have brought someone with me... But whom? I don't know anyone here. I should have waited . . . There was a big pile of food in the dorm. I should have eaten there.
My thoughts suddenly remembered the conversation, I had with my best friend from just moments ago and I realized why she was laughing. She knows me too well.
I saw a couple of shops at the end of street. I went inside an electronic shop and asked one of the shopkeepers if I could have a new contact number. Luckily, they offered them.
I purchased a new sim card and decided to go back to my room.
Indian food can wait.
I turned and started walking back. Well, I guess I didn't get enough courage to go all alone on my first day, but I decided I will go outside tomorrow for sure and this time, I won't be scared.
Yeah!
I came back to my room and changed into my favorite polka dotted blue pajama pants and a black over sized t-shirt. I was still hungry, so I decided to check out the dorm's mess hall.
