Chapter 16 - Ghosts From The Past

2nd of August, 2008
Michael is 49, Angela is 44

Angela: "Michael, come on! It's not even that cold." I called over to Michael who stood by the porch door.

"Not that cold?! It's below freezing!"

I giggled, "So get in the hot tub! That's what it's for!"

My husband exhaled loudly before running to the hot tub where I was in, and taking his flip flops and robe off quickly. "Oh, my God, I can't believe you made me do this."

"Get in already." I rolled my eyes.

"I wonder who's idea was it to put a hot tub outside in the fucking cold," he said as he settled in. "Mmhm, this is pretty nice actually."

Closing my eyes, I sighed, "Told you."

Honestly he was just whining. Yes, it was cold, since we were in the mountains just outside Anchorage. But I thought we could enjoy a little time outside and inhale some well needed fresh air. We've been kinda cooped up in the cabin for the last couple days.

I wasn't complaining, especially since we would have sex at least twice a day. I didn't know what came over Michael since he initiated most of our very, very, pleasing sessions. But again, I wasn't complaining.

"Hey," Michael called, making me open my eyes. "Come here."

I stood up and sat on his lap, wrapping my arms around his neck. He smiled as he leaned down to kiss me.

"I love being able to spend time with you like this. You know, just us." he said.

I kissed him back, "Me too, Mike."

As I expected, it turned very hot, very soon. My husband didn't really wait before trying to slide his fingers inside me.

"Mmhm, Michael, wait..." I moaned into his mouth. "We can't do it here, you don't have a condom and it's too risky."

But he kept on trying, "What's the worst that'll happen?"

I pulled away and looked at him. Is he serious?

"I can't risk getting pregnant again, you know that."

"I do, but it won't be the worst thing."

I couldn't believe those words just came out of his mouth.

"Michael, I almost died giving birth to Leo! Not to mention we have nine kids! And our youngest is just a little over two months old! I can't believe you'd ask me to even slightly risk getting pregnant again." I said angrily, getting off his lap and out of the hot tub.

Without taking even my robe I dashed back to the cabin. Michael called my name but I ignored him.

I was pissed. God, we were having a good time. Did he really have to ruin it?!

Deciding to go cool off in the shower, I started going up the stairs but a hand caught my wrist.
"Woah, Angela, wait," my husband turned me to him. "I'm sorry. I didn't realize it was a sensitive subject."

I scoffed, "Well you should've. I know you don't remember a lot, and we're not what we used to be, but you should've thought a little before speaking. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm gonna take a shower."

With that, I climbed up the stairs, leaving him there.

~

Michael: Angela was coming down the stairs as I finished setting the table. She was only dressed in her bath robe and slippers, and dried her hair with a towel.

I figured I'd make some lunch as we didn't really have breakfast and if I was getting hungry then she was too.

"Are you hungry? I thought you might be hungry so I made lunch." I told her.

"Sure, I'll eat. Thanks." she didn't really look at me as she took a seat.

We ate in silence and I tried to read her. I knew I said a stupid thing but I didn't mean for her to hate me now.

"I can feel you looking at me, you know," Angela put down her fork. "What is it?"

"Can I at least apologize? I really didn't mean to upset you Angela." I tried to take her hand but she pulled it back.

She sighed, "It's like your weren't even thinking when you said that."

"I really wasn't and I'm sorry."

Angela finally looked at me. My heart was beating faster as she took my hand.

"I should apologize too, I kinda over-reacted... It's just, I'm pretty sure I'm ovulating and I freaked out a bit."

"Oh, Ange... Don't worry about it. How about we finish eating and then go do something fun?" I asked.

"I'd love to," she smiled. "And I think we should stop having the other kind of fun for a few days."

"You got it."

~

Night time came around pretty soon without us noticing. We spent the rest of the day watching movies, just talking, and playing board games.

"I win!" Angela cheered and placed her last tile on the 'Scrabble' board.

"I was so close!" I protested.

"Well, we already know you're getting older, so maybe you're getting slower, too." she joked.

I acted offended and picked her up from her hips and placed her on the couch. I climbed on top of her, giving her a soft kiss.

"How's that for slow?" I asked.

My wife giggled, "Meh, it was okay."

Gasping, I started tickling her until she begged me to stop.

"Jesus, Mike, you're too much..." Angela wiped some tears away. "Do you want to watch another movie?"

"Sure. I'll go make some popcorn and you pick the movie." I kissed her one more time before standing up.

I felt a little dizziness as I walked to the kitchen but brushed it off, thinking it was simply the fast movements I just made.

And as soon as I reached the kitchen, I knew something was definitely wrong because my eyes rolled back and everything went black.

~

Angela: I walked into the kitchen after I found a movie I wanted to watch.

"Mike, how about Star Wars? I haven't seen it in a while-" but as soon as I saw him on the floor. "MICHAEL!"

Quickly, I crouched down to see if he was still breathing, and he was.

"You're gonna be okay, I promise..." I kissed the top of his head.

Acting fast, I found a towel and wet it with water, then put it on his forehead.

Then, I found Michael's phone and found our bodyguard's name.

"Mr. Jackson?" he asked. "Is everything alright?"

"Adam, it's Angela," I said, sniffling. "Michael, he fainted... You have to come here, maybe something bad happened..."

"I'm on my way, is he breathing?"

"Yeah..."

"Hang on, Mrs. Jackson, I'll be there in five."

~

After Adam helped me get Michael back in the living room, I called Dr. Moore. He instructed me to check Michael's eyes with a flashlight to see if his pupils are responding. And they did.

"That's good, maybe he just fainted," the doctor said. "You're in Alaska, right? It's not that far, so I doubt it's the flight. Just wait ten more minutes and if he doesn't wake up, take him to the nearest hospital."

"Y-yeah, okay. Thank you, Dr. Moore." I sighed.

"My pleasure. Call me if anything else happen and tell me when he wakes up."

I thanked Dr. Moore again and hung up.

"What if he doesn't wake up, Adam?" I sighed. "This is all my fault. If we'd stay home this probably wouldn't have happened."

"I'm sure he will, Mrs. Jackson. Let's just wait." the bodyguard smiled reassuringly.

I nodded, hoping he'd wake up soon.

~

"Ow..." I heard a moan coming from Michael. "What happened?"

"You fainted... Gosh, you had me really worried. How are you feeling?" I took his hand and kissed it.

He sat up a bit. "I don't know, my head kinda hurts. But just a little, I promise."

"Are you sure?"

"Angela, honey, I'm fine."

"In that case, I'll be going back to my cabin to give you some time to rest, Mr. Jackson." Adam said.

"Thank you, Adam." Michael shook the bodyguard's hand before he left.

I stood up, "I'm gonna get you some water. Don't get up."

"Angela, I'm okay, see?" my husband stood up as well. He made his way over to me and placed a kiss on my forehead. "Stop worrying."

"You know I can't do that. Not after everything."

"But I feel perfect, except for this tiny headache. If it worries you this much, I'll do absolutely nothing for the next couple days. Alright? I'm sorry for scaring you. Now what about that movie?"

Crossing my arms, I sighed. "Fine. Let's watch the movie. But I'm still getting you water."

"Don't forget about the popcorn!" Michael said as I walked to the kitchen.

I rolled my eyes, and a smile crept its way onto my lips.

Angela: It's been almost a week and our time at our little getaway was running out.

We were laying in bed. It was late, maybe around 1 AM.

"It's been such a beautiful week," Michael kissed my temple. "I don't want to leave."

"Me too." I sighed deeply.

"Maybe we don't have to."

I turned to look at him, "What?"

"We don't have to, you know that, we can stay another week."

"I'd actually love that. This week flew by too fast."

My husband smiled, "It's settled, then. We're staying."

I squealed and hugged him tightly.

"Wait, that means we need more food," I said. "I'll go to town and get some tomorrow."

Michael pulled me closer, chuckling.
"Adam can do that, we're on vacation, Angela. Enjoy it."

"I'll be quick, I promise. Plus, I don't want to bother him. Let him enjoy his holiday too."

"Fine. Maybe you should get some more condoms, too. We might be running out soon..." my husband nudged my shoulder.

I gasped, "Michael! Look at you, being so straightforward... I love it. I love you."

He looked me in the eyes. It was clear that he wanted to say it back but couldn't quite get himself to.
And I understood him completely, since I was in the same place two years ago.

So when he kissed me deeply, I kissed him back.

"How about we go to sleep?" Michael whispered over my lips.

"Yeah... I'm getting kinda tired. That last round wore me out." I giggled.

With that, my husband turned the lights off and tightened his grip around me. I settled into him, knowing I'll have a good night's sleep.

~

Angela: After waking up, having breakfast, and drinking my daily dose of coffee, I headed towards Anchorage.

"Don't take too long." Michael kissed me goodbye.

The ride wasn't long, maybe forty minutes. And after a few minutes of driving inside the city, I found a little grocery store. I found my sunglasses, put them on, along with a beanie I'd brought. Honestly, I looked ridiculous, but I couldn't take the chance of someone recognizing me.

I strolled down the few isles of the small store, picking necessary things.

As I went through the dry foods isle, an old lady passed by me. I didn't give her much thought and put different ingredients for future meals in my cart.

"Oh, excuse me sir, but can you help me reach that top shelf?" the lady was heard behind me.

"Of course." an all too familiar voice answered her.

I froze. That voice. His voice.

"Thank you, sir," the elderly lady said. "And thank you so much for your service."

I could swear it felt like my soul was leaving my body. I turned around and there he was.

My breath caught in my throat, the jar I was holding slipped out of my hands. Tears blurred my vision but I knew what I was seeing.

"J-Jake?"
