chapter three
third chapter has FINALLY been posted!
so what do you guys think of Mr. Wilder?
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
I huffed in frustration, repeatedly pressing down on the backspace key. "Why can't I just write the words I want to write?" I groaned pushing my glasses up my nose.
"Because you're overthinking it and your brain is telling you to eat." Hailee said, dangling a donut in front of my face. I rolled my eyes playfully snatching the sweet delicacy from her boney fingers. "The only thing my brain is telling me is why we're roommates."
Hailee shoved a glazed pastry into her mouth, snagging a bite from its whole. "Because you can't survive without me."
"I think you mean the opposite." A light shove pushed at my shoulder making me laugh as I lifted the donut to my watering lips. I took a chunk out of its life force tasting the delicious glaze. "I love you!"
"I hate you!" She turned on her heel, blonde hair swaying back and forth behind her back. I giggled through delicious mush before returning to my work.
Hailee and I have been best friends since high school. She was the popular cheerleader and me the classic shy girl. We were from two very different worlds yet somehow we just fit. She taught me how to be more confident in myself and I, well, kept her from being a complete drunk. Not that I don't mind her drinking, but when she's drunk she tends to tell the truth at an unnecessary time. Relationships seemed to disappear like the vodka in the cabinet.
I stared at the white document glaring at me through the screen. It had been a week since the interview and Jaqueline was pressing down me to send in a draft. The article was taunting me to get it done within the deadline, but nothing seemed to come out the way I wanted it. I was in a box with no where to go and no place to travel to. Just what every reporter needs.
I groaned in frustration shutting my laptop and walking into the kitchen with my donut in hand. My bare feet slapping against the wooden planks of the floorboard. I ripped a rather large chunk off the circular pastry with plenty of glaze to go around. Hailee looked up from popping a bottle of wine. She must've finished the other one.
She smiled seeing my state of distress and aggravation. "Aww what's wrong babe?"
I leaned against the edge of the island plopped down in the middle of the kitchen. "I can't write anything." I said though pieces of donut flew from my mouth. Guess that's what I get for eating before speaking.
Hailee popped her bottom lip into a mock pout. "Oh don't worry Daisy May. You'll write something good." She patted my hand gently while I huffed.
I ran my fingers through my chocolate brown hair with my known glazed hand. I swallowed with donut was left then sucked off the sweet topping that had once been a donut. "It's not like I can't write. I can, but it's just writing about the interview and....Him."
The blonde raised a brow the same time she was pouring herself a nice, tall glass of Pacific Peak Merlot. "Him? As in the hunky, dashing, sexy billionaire you interviewed for your article?" A grin forming its way to her lips like the Cheshire cat sitting in its tree.
"Yes that Him." I reached out to grab the bottle from her hand, but unfortunately I was too slow. Hailee pulled the Merlot away from my reach tsking at me. She always hogs it all.
"Tell me about him." Hailee kept one hand clamped around the bottle while the other held her glass. She brought the clear glass to her lips taking a few ladylike sips that I knew full well would drain the glass in minutes.
I narrowed my eyes at her. "There's nothing to talk about. He's just like every other guy in New York." I reached out to grab the bottle only to get the same treatment like before. I see how it is.
Hailee quirked a brow with interest pulling the glass away from her tinted pink lips. "Except he's mysterious, rich, and drop dead gorgeous. Come on Daisy. There must be something you can tell me. What he likes, dislikes, anything."
As I suspected. She only wants to be nosy as per usual. "Why can't you just accept that he's just a normal human being? Mr. Wilder is just another guy that's just trying to get his business further out there. Now can I please have some wine."
My best friend narrowed her eyes at me as she slowly set the bottle down on the marble surface of the island. "Okay, but only if you tell me about your interview."
"Hailee—"
"Just tell me what happened and you can have the whole bottle. Well maybe not the entire bottle, but at least a glass." Hailee angled her head to the side, beating me down with those big puppy dog eyes and a baby's pout. "Please Daisy!"
"No. Quit doing that thing." I walked around the island to the cabinet with the rest of the wine glasses.
"What thing?" Hailee's eyes get bigger and her lip poutier. Is that even a word?
"The thing where you look at me all innocent and I give into your whiney attempts. It's not gonna happen Hails." I opened the cabinet and plucked a clean glass off the shelf. I turned around and find Hailee leaning against the marbled counter.
She cocked her head to the side. "Pleeeeeeeease Daisy! Pretty pretty please!"
I pressed my lips together and closed my eyes. I keep repeating to myself that this is just another one of her petty moves to manipulate me. But the guilty part of me caved into her powers. Letting out a breath, I opened my eyes with defeat. "Fine. But just about the interview."
Hailee giggled in victory. "Lovely! Now from the beginning." She angled the glass bottle filling the glass half full then slid it over to me.
I shook my head, licking my lips as I thought about my words. Sharing this sort of information was something that no one knew about except for me. The New York Times, The Washington Post, and so much more didn't even have an inch of information about Andres. Giving anything that could jeopardize my entire article and spoil any juicy details was something I couldn't compromise. Besides, there were secrets she probably hasn't told me yet.
"Well, the interview was like anything you'd expect. I was late for the interview—"
"Daisy Mendez? Late? No?!" Hailee grinned at me sipping from her clear glass of wine. She tugged at her oversize shirt letting the tip of the V-neck touch the valley between her breasts. The blonde laid a manicured claw on the counter casting her teasing eyes over to me.
I rolled my eyes, continuing with my story. "I asked him questions I had written up on my tablet and he answered however he saw fit. He was very precise with his answers and it all went very well." My throat went dry thinking about what happened after and took a long sip of wine.
My roommate raised a brow. "And?" I shrugged to her question. She stood straight up furrowing her brows together in confusion. "Wait, that's it? No, no, no, no. There's got to be more to it than that."
I shrugged again sipping away at my plentiful glass. "There's nothing more to tell. I did the interview and left." I turned my back trying to shut the door on this conversation and went to the rustic couch of our apartment.
"Come on there's got to be more to it than that Dai. There had to be some flirting or a look or something. It couldn't have been." She shivered shaking her shoulders. "Boring." Her nose wrinkled at the world. I gawked at Hailee in shock of the word.
"Excuse you but my interviews are not boring." I angled my glass back letting the beverage run down my throat. Hailee came around the island and sat herself down a seat cushion away from me. Her manicured fingers wrapped securely around her glass like it was an oxygen mask along with the bottle to match.
I leaned back into the pillow decor behind me watching Hailee press further into the situation. "Seriously Daisy. There had to be something more. There always is with those billionaire guys. He had to have given you a smile or a wink. Something other than answer boring questions."
She was right he did do something other than interview itself. He made me curl my toes and get that fire started from the depths of my stomach. It was amazing all in all. I wish I could've stayed in that moment for a second longer.
"He didn't do anything Hailee." I tapped my finger against the side of my glass wanting to end the conversation sooner rather than later.
"Then why do I feel like you're hiding something from me?" Hailee was seriously pushing some buttons. I wish she'd just shut up and drop the topic.
"Because I'm not. Can we move on please?"
"Why do you avoiding my questions? It's not like he kissed you or anything." Hailee raised the glass to her lips waiting for me to drink mine. But I bit my bottom lip instead. As soon as a gasp left her lips, I knew my cover was blown.
Hailee screamed in pure joy and excitement. "AAH! Oh my god Daisy!"
I reached over gripping her wrist. "Shh! Hailee please keep your voice down. I don't want any of our nosy neighbors to hear. Besides it's not even that big of a deal." God knows what would be in the tabloids in the next few hours if they decided to actually act on their suspicions. That's the last thing I'd want my boss to see on the cover of People's magazine.
My best friend grinned from ear to ear looking more and more like the Chessire Cat by the minute. "Daisy this is HUGE! You just kissed a freaking god worth billions of dollars. Every girl in the world would wanna be in your shoes right now. Hell I want to fit in those cheap flats."
I rolled my eyes falling back onto the pillow who was my only savior at this point beside this glass of wine. I ran my fingers through my short hair trying to distract myself from her cheeky grin. "Well it doesn't even matter anymore because it's not gonna happen again and we're never gonna see each other. So if you're done being twelve again."
Hailee remained silent for thirty seconds that was glorious to my ears given she'd been ripping my ear off for the past fifteen minutes. She idly sipped her wine letting the dust settle between us. "Was he good at least?"
I gawked and chucked the pillow at her. Hailee giggled raising a free hand up to block the shot. "Save the wine!" She cried out downing some more of the fruity concoction. I shook my head smiling over at her.
Even though we had our slight differences, we were a great duo. She may annoy me sometimes and yeah she puts her nose in the wrong places. But it's who she is after all. I wouldn't change her....okay maybe her snoring and the constant boys hooking up in her room but that's it.
Hailee leaned over, grabbed a hold of the wine bottle, and poured herself some more wine. I drank my glass until it was to a meek stain in the bottom of the clear bowl. I was about to grab the bottle from Hailee's clutches when a distant ring came from my bedroom. I huffed dragging my feet into my corner of my humble abode.
Whoever was calling this late into the evening was stupid for thinking that I was working. Which I originally was, but breaks are necessary for a person to stay alive. And sane nonetheless. I grabbed my phone and answered the call. "If this is you Sam, I'm not in the mood for your perverted comments."
"Aww and I was about to say how hot your lips would look around my finger." That voice...it couldn't be.
I looked at the caller ID seeing it read Unknown before putting the phone back to my ear. "M-Mr. Wilder? H-How did you get my phone?"
"You gave me your business card remember? Or did you forget about our kiss so soon?" A low chuckle vibrated my phone and shook me to the bone. I swear my knees turned to Jell-O.
My feet slapped against the wooden floor of the apartment into the living room. Hailee raised a brow seeing the phone attached to my ear. She mouthed a 'Who is it?' as I answered Andes's question. "Um, no no. I haven't forgotten. I just wasn't—"
"Expecting a call from me? Of course but I thought it'd be fun if we had the chance to continue our interview somewhere a bit less....professional."
I pushed my fingers into my hair, scratching my scalp. "Oh right. You see the thing is I have plans. Plus I have everything I need so there's no sense in wasting anymore of your valuable time."
Another chuckle. "Oh but I don't have everything I need from you. And I know you don't have plans tonight because you've been sipping a glass of wine."
"Wait how did—"
"Look out your window Daisy."
I furrowed my brow in confusion. How in the world did he know I was drinking wine when I'm on the other side of the city? So many questions that I needed answered in minutes. I walked over to the window and stared in shock. Hailee rushed over peeking out the window with me, gasping. "Oh. My. God."
A black SUV sat parked on the sidewalk with a tall drink of water leaning against the side of the car. Dressed in a black suit it was near impossible to pick him out of the camouflage. He lifted a hand and waved it up at us. I knew full well that he was probably smirking on the other end.
"How did...when did you...What?"
A car door opened following his movements as we watched him disappear into the vehicle. "Get dressed and be down here in five minutes." Two beeps came from the line before complete silence ran in my ear.
I stepped away from the window just to see Hailee grinning like a mad woman. "You're right. He's never going to see you again." She giggled giving my shoulder a light shove. "Go Daisy. You're knight in shining armor is waiting for you."
I dashed into my bedroom, shoving my limbs into some comfy clothes, and jogging down the stairs. My hair was beyond pointless at this point being one length at all times. My glasses slowly slid down my freckled nose until I pushed them up. Dang things were awful sometimes.
As I reached the car, the window was rolled down to reveal a handsome face in the other seat of the car. "Get in." He ordered with a smirk plastered on his lips. I bit my bottom lip climbing into the vehicle and buckling myself up.
Andres took a long look at me before turning to his driver. "Nickel Cafe."
I wasn't sure whether to be excited, nervous, or terrified. But there was only one way to find out and that was to go with the Devil himself.
