"Johanna!" Finnick yelled, snapping Opal back to reality.
"Finnick!" Johanna replied. Opal made her way back through the bushes seeing three figures stumbling onto the beach, they were in bad shape even she could see it from where she stood. One was practically being dragged out by the second, while the third walked in loopy circles like it was deranged.
Katniss and Peeta began to tromp after Finnick "I guess we have more allies." the teen boy shrugged. Opal picked up a steady jog letting her katana hang loose in her hand, she sent a small smile over to Johanna who was quick to return it attempting to pull the woman in for a hug until she saw the blood she was decorated with
"We thought it was rain, you know, because of the lightning, and we were all so thirsty. But when it started to come down it turned out to be blood. Thick, hot blood" Johanna scoffed "You couldn't see, you couldn't speak. We were stumbling around on it blind. That's when Blight hit the force field. He wasn't much, but he was from home."
"Tick tock," Wiress carried on in the background pushing Johanna's nerves "Tick tock."
"I'm sorry Johanna," Finnick and Opal said at the same time throwing a sympathetic look at the brunette-haired woman.
"Yeah, we know. Tick tock. Nuts is in shock." Said Johanna laughing at her joke. Wiress seemed to be drawn back to Johanna as she careened into her, the woman responds by harshly pushing her to the sandy floor.
Katniss drew forward "Hey! Lay off her!" she snapped going in to push Johanna.
"Hey what are you doing!" Johanna hissed "I got them out for you!" Finnick managed to get a grasp on her withering body and pulled her out into the water. Opal grabbed Katniss's bicep hard "Finnick let go of me!" Johanna yelled trying to push him away.
The man looked to Opal for help "Hey! hey! You're okay!" Opal made her way into the water lifting her legs as the water splashed against her, the woman lightly cupped Johanna's face staring straight into her eyes in an attempt to make her remember the plan.
"I'm fine now," Johanna sighed pushing the other woman's hands down gently.
Opal nodded "I'm glad to see you, Jo,"
Peeta helped Beetee up and Katniss took Wiress back to their small camp on the tree line. The teen soon took Wiress into the shallows so she could get cleaned up a bit, but she just kept clatching onto her hand as she occasionally mumbled, "Tick tock.". Opal sat no far away a few shellfish laid across her legs, Finnick had caught them for her not too long ago, and her fingers delicately ripped a chunk of its flesh from its shell and popped it into her mouth. The brunette woman pulled her face at their rubbery texture. "Tick-tock," Wiress said closing her eyes as Katniss washed the blood from her hair. The sky lit up as the lighting struck twelve times like it had done the previous day.
"Tick tock," Katniss muttered under her breath "It's a clock. It's a clock," she spoke loudly so everyone could hear. Opal shared a confused look with Finnick as they both rose to their feet. "My God, it's a clock! Wiress, you're a genius." Wiress clapped her hands excitedly as a wave of relief washed over her.
"This entire arena seems to be laid out like a clock with a new threat every hour, but they stay only in their wedge. It all starts with the lighting. Then the blood rain, fog, monkeys." Katniss explained as they began to make their way to the Cornucopia wanting to go over the leftover supplies since there were seven of them now
Opal brushed past Wiress with a smile "You're a genius, you know that?" The woman nodded ecstatically practically skipping the rest of the way to the Cornucopia. "The lighting strikes where the tail of the Cornucopia is too."
"It strikes where?" Beetee questioned, squinting in an attempt to keep the sun from his eyes.
"There," she pointed "The big tree." Moving further into the Cornucopia she picked up a larger dagger, there was no way she could accurately throw it but it was nice to have an extra weapon. Next, she picked up a small belt which had perfect loops for storing all of her weapons. The woman wandered back to Finnick passing him the large dagger "For you."
He smiled gently taking the dagger "Thank you."
Peeta sat close by crouched on the floor as he used the edge of his knife on a smooth large leaf he had brought from the jungle, Opal looked over her shoulder as she realised he was drawing a map of the arena. It looked like a pie sliced into twelve equal edges, and there was another smaller circle in the middle representing the Cornucopia and a slightly larger one representing the waterline. Johanna poked her head out of the Cornucopia with a smile, two deadly-looking axes in her hands. Wiress gasped which made all of their heads turn to see a dripping wet Gloss letting Wiress slide to the floor, her throat slit open in a wide red smile. Katniss was quick to nock an arrow letting its point disappear into his chest. The cannon sounded twice.
"Watch out!" Opal yelled panicked as she pushed Katniss back, launching herself at Cashmere who was coming at her with full force. Opal sneered at Cashmere as they both assumed a high guard, and they both threw overhand cuts. Opal parried quickly, reflexively. Cashmere cut from the other side, and Opal again parried. They moved, back and forth, until, realizing she wasn't dead yet, Opal began to remember the many hours she had spent training. She began to think, to act instead of react. Cashmere kept throwing overhand cuts, she could use this. However, her moment of thinking was cut short, when Cashmere's blade came in heavy force almost making her kneel, with Opal's spare hand she pressed against the blade using all her strength to push herself back up.
Panic overwhelmed her as the sound of Finnick's grunts of pain filled her ears. The women's movements were successful allowing her to once again rise to her feet. "Cashmere it doesn't have to be this way!"
"My brother is dead!" She yelled angrily "I have nothing left to live for!" Cashmere parried, and cut against Opal. She dodged to the side, throwing a crooked cut at Cashmere's hand. She stared in shock at the sight of her pinky finger on the floor. Opal stood there just as shocked, Cashmere used this to her advantage using her blade to slap Opals from her hand. A heavy and aggressive kick hit her in the stomach launching the woman backwards, Opal's head harshly hit the cobbled floor a sharp pain shot through her skull causing the woman to be in a disoriented state. Almost in a trance, she watched as Cashmere came towards her flipping the axe in her hands getting ready for the killing blow, she pointed the blade at Opal's face making sure it was in a position where it would instantly kill her.
She struck. However Opal rolled to the side using the few seconds she had to swing her legs in a starfish motion using them to knock Cashmere off balance, she flew towards the floor hitting it harshly. The woman stood up in a flash swinging the axe over her head as she went to cut Opal but she ducks avoiding her attack, Cashmere's next swing was low but once again Opal managed to flee her blade. Cashmere stumbled exhaustion taking over, this allowed Opal to get a firm grip on the woman's arm pulling herself towards Cashmere, landing a heavy punch to her nose the small crunch made her cringe. With a small scream Opal pulled a dagger from her belt planting it into Cashmere's neck, the blonde stumbled crashing into the waves. The cannon rang through her ears.
"Finnick! Are you okay?!" Opal panicked scanning her vigorously over him until she noticed a small gash from a knife on his thigh. Before Opal could take any further action the ground jerked from underneath her, flinging the woman on her side. The circle of land that held the Cornucopia began to spin fast, so fast that the jungle seemed like a blur in the distance. Opal let out a shriek as her grip loosened making her slide down the rough rocks only to be caught by Finnicks hand.
"Hold on!" he begged as strained grunts escaped his lips. Opal squeezed her eyes shut as his grasp tightened on her injured hand.
"Finnick!" she yelped as a knife from the Cornucopia barreled towards her slicing the woman's leg open, her grip loosened sending her flying backwards into the water.
"No! No!" Finnick screamed.
Opal couldn't see the surface as the water spun her in circles furiously, the little bit of light reflected further and further away with each passing second. She looked down and the ominous darkness made her panic even more, Opal was a strong swimmer having grown up in District four but she was no match for the undercurrent. She struggled to hold her breath as the pressure on her lungs grew, Opal's body was losing its grip on the precious air that still filled her lungs and she could feel her heartbeat growing louder and louder. She desperately needed air. She kicked and tried to get to the surface, but she knew it was no use. Everything started to hurt and her chest felt like someone stabbed her. Her fingers felt like they were going to burst open like she had tied a tourniquet around them swelling until they would explode. Black specs began to fill her vision as the nerves in her body shut down, instinctively her body inhaled filling her mouth with the salty water. Opal accepted her fate as everything went silent and utterly black.
