Once Harry dropped me off at my mansion, my mood eased when I saw the outside looking beautiful as always. My mansion consisted of soft blue and gray shades and various flowers and huge plants littered and surrounded the concrete driveway perfectly.
Once we made it to the front door, I saw my best friend, Savannah standing in the doorway with the door opened and my smile grew wider. She's been staying here for a couple of months ever since she broke up with her boyfriend back in London. When she first moved here, she insisted that she helped to pay bills, but I disregarded it since my bills were always paid. Then she suggested that she could cook and clean, which I also disregarded since I had a personal chef, Jamie, and personal maid, Mary.
So she eventually agreed upon living here rent free.
When she saw me she opened her arms and I walked into them without saying a word, simply missing and basking in her company and comfort. Her arms closed around me and I eventually hugged her back just as tightly. She knew my situation at the company and how much of a jackass Hakeem could be, so everyday when I made it home, she always hugged me for "surviving the day". I appreciated her motivation because dealing with him and the press, I needed it.
I pulled back and smiled at her and she smiled back at me just as brightly in return.
"Rough day?" She asked shifting some of her weight to one foot
"You can definitely say that." I responded shrugging my navy blue business jacket off
"Oh my gosh, there's tea today isn't there? What did he do this time? Did you almost strangle him, I would have strangled him." She persisted making me laugh softly
"No Savannah, I didn't strangle him, but I did throw both of my heels at him." I gushed and she applauded like a proud mother
"That's my girl! What did he do though?" She questioned once more and I sighed
"He made this bullshit ass billboard posting with my face crossed out and him beside me wearing a crown. While in front of the company. Childish and idiotic right?"
It took a minute for her to respond as she just sat there blinking and me being me, I sarcastically wave my hand in front of her face. While doing so, she came to back to reality and got up to walk in her room. Confusion engulfed me, but before I could ask about it, she returned in an all black jumper, a baseball bat, and black shades.
Well I knew where her mind set was.
She lowered her shades and mouthed "you coming?" to me and when I shook my head playfully, holding back a grin, she shrugged, lifted the glasses back up, and continued to walk to the door, swinging the bat between her fingers gracefully.
Sometimes I forgot she was trained by her father out of the States for self defense.
"Savannah! I already handled it!" I yelled to her and got up not even caring about holding in my laughter
One thing about my best friend was that she didn't play about me. Especially when the person who would mess with me was most likely my brother. If I wasn't mistaken, I'd definitely say that she hated him.
She turned back to me before sliding on her pink bunny slippers and lowered her shades again.
"Question, when you threw the heel at him, where did you aim?" She asked and I knitted my eyebrows in confusion
"The head." I answered hesitantly
"Which one?" She questioned and her head tilted up waiting for my response
"Gosh, Savannah, the one that connects to his neck." I exclaimed disgustingly, not even wanting to think about throwing one of my favorite heels there
"Hmm, well it seems like you didn't handle it enough. I'll be back." She answered sweetly and twirled the bat between her fingers skillfully
"Savannah!" I yelled again but she opened the door and stepped out
Fuck, I can't let her do this.
If it were up to me, the decision wouldn't have even mattered since destruction of property was what Hakeem needed. But the whining I'd hear from him since Savannah was known to prove her point – well that I wasn't to keen about.
I inwardly mumbled to myself and ran to the door, hoping she'd just be starting the car. Yet when I opened it, she was staring right back at me with a blank expression on her face. The baseball bat was still beside her, but it faced down as she leaned her weight on it.
Before I could say anything, she pushed one of her manicured fingers up.
"First of all, you're a fake bestfriend because you didn't get ready for assault as quick as I did. Second of all, you're a fake bestfriend because you know damn well they suspended my license so where would I go? " She spat sarcastically but angrily and playfully at the same time and I tried my hardest not to laugh
"And now you're laughing at me. Wow. Just wow. Move girl." She demanded and pushed by me to get back inside and the laugh I was holding inside bursted through
I tried running after her but she walked into her room and closed the door which made me laugh even harder. Then I started to hear her curse me out fluently through her accent and trust me, they were words I wouldn't even have the confidence to say.
I didn't know why she was like this, but she was always the more dramatic one out of us two, but it never bothered me. If anything I needed the comic relief in my life since it could be too serious at times.
I finally came back to my senses and closed the door to lock it then walked to my kitchen. On cue, my stomach growled, and I realized I haven't ate since earlier, and now it was around eight o'clock at night.
I gave Jamie the weekend off since it was his daughter's birthday and I knew he was barely home since he was always here. So you can imagine how shocked I was when I saw him standing over the stove already preparing a meal.
"Um, Jamie, I could've sworn I gave you the weekend off." I mumbled as I walked to him and he looked over his shoulder to me with a glint of sweat crossing his forehead
"Yes you did Ms. Robinson, but I wanted to prepare your dinner before I left. Madeline is going to be mad at me regardless." He responded turning around completely to show me his black shirt and blue jeans that fitted him behind the navy blue apron
If you couldn't tell by now, my favorite colors were blue and gray and my house showed it more than I could tell.
Shaking my head at his comment, I internally visualized Madeline, his wife, throwing glares and sneakers his way for missing their daughter's birthday or even being late to it. She was a precise woman who wasn't too keen on waiting. Especially for her family.
Before I could respond though, he beat me to it with a regretful and scarce look on his face.
"I was supposed to buy a cake for Katelyn, but I forgot. Sooo I'm stalling so when I see her, she'll be less mad." He smiles cheekily and I turn away from him to try and stifle another laugh
I couldn't wait to see what my husband would be like if he were in this position.
I cleared my throat hoping he didn't hear the small chuckles that slipped through and headed to the sink where I washed my hands with my vanilla scented soap.
"Jamie, for someone whose been married for 10 years, you still have some things to learn about women." I turned around to tease him with a small smile and he sighed knowingly
"So I've heard. Hey if she calls can you tell her I'm not here?" He asked with a scared yet serious expression on his face as he started cutting up some vegetables
"For what, so she can come here anyways? She knows where you are 24/7." I reminded him and he cursed under his breath
"You're right. I need to go into hiding... Else where," He stated and tapped the bottom of his chin
"Or, you could leave here and buy a cake for your daughter so your wife doesn't kill you before you reach 50?" I suggested and he nodded his head like it was the most brilliant idea ever
I appreciated that my employees and I could have the playful and heart to heart conversations that we had because simply being their boss applied an extra amount of pressure on my shoulders that I didn't need or favor in the slightest.
"You don't mind if I leave mid way through cooking do you?" He asked looking over his shoulder once more while frantically grabbing his things and taking the apron off
"Jamie, your family is more important than me eating. I know I pay you to cook but I also want you to be present with your daughter. Don't worry about me." I answered softly and walked to the stove where he just was
"Thank you Ms. Robinson, you know you deserve more in this world. You really do have a kind and well spirit." He replied and embraced me closely before putting his baseball cap on
"Why thank you Jamie. I'll remember that." I responded and hugged him just as tightly
"Anyways, I'll see you girls Monday alright?" He spoke before walking to the front door
"Alright Jamie, take care of yourself." My voice was soft as I smiled at the thought of him leaving to his family
Possibly... I was envious since I couldn't have that for myself. The amount of men I've been with in my past has been limited, but the affect they left on me and my love life was impactful. I'm always calculated and precise with the men I pick now because I don't want to go through another faze of crashing and burning and resorting to alcohol to cope.
Which is why I forced my workers to get with their families even on the days they work because I knew how it felt to be alone or brushed to the side. I didn't want them to feel the way I felt.
The realization tore at my chest, but I managed to ignore it. I didn't want to dwell in the fact that I've been single for the past three years while everyone surrounded by me has love or even an potential interest, but damn it was hard considering the bullshit I got from the company.
I allowed a breath I didn't know I was holding to flow through my lips as I closed the door and turned around to raid my kitchen again. Suddenly feeling for some cereal, I walked up to my cupboard where I hid all of the boxes away from Savannah.
Her ass would eat all of them for breakfast, lunch, and dinner if I let her.
Once I made the bowl of cereal, I took a seat at the wooden brown and long table that was skillfully placed in the corner of the kitchen by the tall window and ate in silence. Suddenly, I started to take in the peace that ultimately consumed the house and blew out a breath that completely calmed my nerves but simultaneously tired me out.
I walked back to my room and stripped out of the rest of my work clothes and smiled cheekily at the feeling of being unrestricted. I settled for grey sweatpants and a light blue tank top, and headed back into the living room thinking of a show I could binge watch until twelve. Before I could think of one though, I saw Savannah with pajamas on and her hair in a high messy bun skimming through the channels on the TV.
Once she heard my foot steps, she craned her neck to look at me and a huge grin took over her face.
"Okay bitch play the music and grab the tequila, we're getting lit tonight!"
Well there goes my quiet night.
