I jolted awake to the sound of thunder. Bright flashing illuminating the window that had a thin layer of curtain fabric drawn over it. My sudden movement caused something to stir beneath me. Jack. I sighed, relief washing over me as I became glad to have awoken from the awful dream. The earlier events of the evening replaying in my uneasy mind as I slept.
My body relaxed, reassured of the the fact that we weren't still at the MET running for our lives, like we had been in my nightmare.
I found myself in awe as the angry weather outside continued to provide striking flashes of light. Jack's beautiful face illuminated for seconds at a time before the room was plunged into gloom again.
Even in dim light I could see his peaceful features rested against the pillow. Long eyelashes rested on the top of his cheeks. My eyes fell into to his lips, all I could think about was what I did to them..
It was the most tranquil state I had ever seen him in. He was still apart from the steady movement of his chest and the occasional twitch of his fingers.
My mind wondered back to what he told me before we fell asleep. My heart ached with the obvious painful memories he held. He didn't have to admit it, but I knew he also loved that girl. They both lost a love that night; he and his best friend, Andrew. It's crazy to even think they were once a duo from everything I've seen. But they were, and because of that girl, the lost of their friendship really affected him. I can also relate to that in a way. Even if it happened years ago, it still beats you down.
He's a good guy; I was always right about that. He's just.. Bothered by the guilt he holds inside.
I know what it feels like to lose someone you love. It changes everything from the way you think to the way you live. On top of that, he also had the hatred of Andrew. No wonder he's so closed up and distant about everything.
I understood why, now.. He's afraid he'll become attached. Colt's reaction to everything, even though the bombing wasn't part of his plan, and the death of this girl tore him up inside. I could tell Jack couldn't bear to go through another experience like the one he was a part of.
I didn't want to justify the violent behavior he displayed now, but I could certainly understand it. I began to believe Jack's actions toward me weren't something I should be afraid of. But he still held that certain intimidating edge. The following, the violence on other guys, the racing and its enemies..
I really don't know what he started seeing in me enough to keep on going after. Doesn't necessarily mean he has to like me now, but from what I've heard, seeing a girl more than once (sleeping with or not) was a record too big for him to hold.
My thoughts were a abruptly interrupted when Jack shot up, the loud weather yanking him from his sleep.
His hands instantly found mine, pulling me back into his body as he breathed heavily. I rested back into the position I stayed out in.
"Jack, it's just thunder." I whispered, attempting to calm him down.
His arms protectively wrapped around my body. My fingers moved in soothing circles across his bare skin as I gradually felt his muscles relax.

I squinted slightly at the bright light peeking through the edges of the curtain. Elizabeth was still asleep, mouth slightly agape as she remained well rested over my chest. She looked peaceful, taking in everything that happened the previous night.
I gently pried her gentle figure out from around my body for me to shuffle out of the bed. Elizabeth rolled onto her front, face pressed onto the pillow as she lightly breathed.
My hands quietly rooted through my drawers , pulling clothes for me to change into after my shower.
My head turned, eyes locking on the still sleeping figure in the bed before I turned around and removed every piece of the fancy outfit I still had on from last night and stepped into the shower. I washed myself from head to toe, letting the water wash away all the trouble from last night. I was sore; my whole body ached in pain. A nice hot shower was the best medicine right now. But apart from all the soreness, I was actually very relaxed. I don't think I ever had such a good sleep before. I was calm; it was the most tranquil I've been in years.
I don't know if it's the fact that I finally released that story out to someone, or the fact that she was so gentle with me afterwards that set my sleep to its climax. I never told that story before. The guys know I was cheating with Serena and the warehouse blew up, but they don't know Colt was the one who sent her there in the first place. They believe he's still mad at me because of the cheating, and I let them believe them. What they don't know won't kill them. So to not tell my guys, but tell this girl who I barely even know is big! One thing I know for sure though, is that it wasn't easy to remember all that. All those feelings, all those horrible reminders. I never wanted to think of that again.
I don't know why I didn't it, but I'm sure I don't regret it. Man, what is happening to me!?
I finally built up the strength to turn off the faucet as the raging questions spun around my mind in a continuous loop and got out. Opening the door of the shower, I pulled out the towel I had set out for me and carelessly dried my hair and shoulders before wrapping the towel around my waist. I stepped out of the shower but disappointment grew as my eyes landed on the bed. The sheets were a mess on the mattress. Elizabeth nowhere in sight.
My head quickly dashed to turn to my other side to the sound of a kitchen cabinet squeaking open.
I grew astonished to the sudden sound but I was even more astonished towards the one creating the sounds..
She was reaching up high in her tippy toes. Arms stretching as far as she can take them in order to grab something from the highest shelf. The t shirt she wore was extra big on her compared to the shorts she wore that I found in the trailer; shorts that belonged to Sophia since her and Cameron like to come out here every now and then. All that was displayed in front of me was the back of this gorgeous girl with short legs struggling to reach the top shelf. She was smaller this way, barefoot. Adorable too.
My eyes wandered around the space. There was sugar and a coffee machine starting to make the coffee. All that was missing was the cream, which to my guess would be what she was trying to reach for.
I softly smiled and shook my head. She was cute.
A quiet grunt was released from her mouth as she reached her hand back down to rest. I moved up behind her and before she could reach a hand back up again, I rose mine above her small figure. My body cast some sort of shadow over her small one. I gripped the bottle of cream and handed it back down to her. Elizabeth's startled eyes wandered back over to me as she gracefully took the bottle from my hands to which I was handing back over to her.
"Good Morning." I smiled.
She seemed a little nervous with my appearance. I forgot I was only in towel, exposing my entire upper body to her.
I was lying if I said I wasn't enjoying this.
"Morning." She placed a strand of her dark brown hair behind her.
"I-I hope you don't mind but I was going to make us some coffee?" She seemed shy in asking.
"I don't mind." I smiled. Then something else occurred to me. "Did I wake you?" I asked.
"No." She immediately shook her head. "I just woke up about a minute ago."
"Oh." I was relieved.
"Did you sleep alright?" I asked. "I know I did."
I watched as a helpless smile curved into the corner of her lips. I could tell she didn't want to show it, but I enjoyed every bit of it.
"Yes." Heat flushed over her cheeks.
Our silence was broken moments after to the sound of a phone ringing. I wandered around the room; mind aimlessly searching for the sound.
I found myself stepping into the room again and up to the night stand where my phone was set. Picking up the phone, I didn't mind looking at the caller ID and just picked up.
"Hello." I began.
"How's the happy camper?" Justin's voice laughed through the line.
"Very funny, Justin." I shook my head, not minding his remark in trying to be funny for once.
"Lighten up, G." His laughter calmed. "Aye, how's the girl?"
"Fine." I answered. "Everything is fine."
"Good." He replied. "Well I hope you're not making yourself too comfortable.."
"You got rid of them?" I asked seconds after.
"Yes, Sir. Went into town. Lost them right after." He explained.
Relief flushed all through my body.
"Thank you.. Justin." I sighed. "For everything."
I wasn't really the best guy a few days ago. If you recall, last time I spoke to my guys we were fighting over this same situation.. I yelled at them and told them to leave my house. Though they did listen to me; they still answered when I needed them. Even if I was a complete ass, my guys never let me down and for that I am really grateful. Ethan still needs to come around, but he's always like that so I'm not too concerned. For now, I'm just glad I had everyone else.
"No need to thank me." I heard him speak up. "I know you'd do the same for me."
"Hell yeah I would." I didn't hesitate in responding.
"Okay, G. I'll be there in 10 minutes." Justin ordered.
"We'll be here." I replied, hanging up moments after.
Dropping my phone onto the mattress, I removed the towel around my waist and grabbed my pair of underwear. My jeans were pulled up moments after along with a gray t shirt I swayed over the other half of my body.
Once I was fully dressed, I grabbed my phone again and slid it in the front pocket of my pants.
I stepped out.
My eyes landed back on the girl now sitting by the table; eyes looking out the window.
Her knees were curled up to her chest as she observed the world go by through the glass. She was calm with the cup of hot coffee sitting on top of her kneecap, both hands hugging it close for her lips to continuously blow the hot air away.
She didn't notice me looking over towards her direction. I became mesmerized by her small gestures.
Elizabeth must have caught me in her peripheral vision as her head snapped around in shock. The fullness of her blue eyes decreased slightly upon locking on mine.
"Your coffee is ready." She looked below to the table in front of her where another mug sat still. "It's still hot."
"Thanks." I brought up the courage. Moving over to her, I sat on the seat across from the one she was at. I gripped the mug by the handle and deliberately brought it up to my lips. I felt her eyes upon me the entire time.
I took a sip from the steaming cup, finding myself in the devouring state of the blend.
"Mm.." I looked up. "Is this.. Hazelnut and French Vanilla?"
Her eyes nervously looked down as she forced a chuckle from her parted lips.
"Yeah.. I do that to my coffee and without noticing I did it to yours too..?" She squinted in embarrassment.
"That's okay." I laughed. "I like it." I went back for another sip.
"Really?" She asked. "You don't find it weird that I mix two coffee accents together?"
"If mixing accents taste this good then by all means, go for it." I joked.
A small laugh fell from her mouth too. But it quickly faded as she took another turn in enthusiasm.
"James showed me how to create new flavors." Her eyes looked back down at her mug, fingertips rubbing over the porcelain surface.
The smile on my face faded with her words.
"I just--" She looked up at me again. "I have to know.. Will my friend be in any danger?"
Her blue eyes peered up at mine in hope. Hope that I would give her the answer she wanted to hear. This was obviously something that has been bothering her for a while. You could notice just by looking at her; and I am one to blame.
Finding it hard to speak, I reached my hand out to hold onto hers. My eyes concentrated in her delicate fingertips and how soft her touch felt against mine. She didn't fight it, only watched.
"I told you I was going to keep you safe. That means you, and anyone you're close to because.. I know what that feels like.." I paused, throat becoming dry as I continued to talk. "To lose someone you love."
I meant those words beyond my situation with Serena and the Cobras. It was a love beyond any of that...
"That's a lot to take on." She peered up at me.
"Yeah," I nodded. "But it's worth it."
My eyes dropped back down to our fiddling thumbs. A small smile curved its way onto my lips; releasing a quiet chuckle. It was mostly for myself, because I couldn't believe I just made a promise like that. I could never make a promise like that. I mean, I could but that would require effort in my part. Though when I said it to Elizabeth, I really meant it. I didn't care for the effort..
I heard Elizabeth's lips part, gasping for air to release something to say. She could let it out though because she was soon interrupted by the sound of a roaring engine.
"Who's that?" She quickly changed questions, peering out the window.
I turned my head and noticed the familiar vehicle. Drawing our hands away, I quickly stood up.
"Justin." I spoke, pacing towards the front door of the Trailer home.
Standing up from her seat, I noticed Elizabeth from the corner of my eye follow behind me.
I stepped outside of the trailer, immediately feeling the fresh scent of pine cone and cool breeze from the outdoors. Justin was stepping out of the Range Rover, locking it from the button in his eyes as he made his way up to us.
"Morning!" He smiled cheekily, looking down as he made his way around his car.
"Morning to you too." I smiled, slapping my hand against his to do our normal guy greetings.
I watched as Justin's eyes trailed to the spot over my shoulder. Lips curving to a soft smile as he saluted back to Elizabeth who was still standing by the door.
"Hi, there."
"Hi." She waved back, softly smiling back at Justin.
"Hey, thanks again, Bro." I walked up to Justin, patting his shoulder.
"Ookay.." He joked around. "Don't get all emotional on me now."
I shook my head, playfully pushing him away from me in a joking manner. Justin laughed.
"Are you guys ready?" Justin's voice called back to me.
"We were just waking up." I replied.
"Oh, alright." Justin nodded. "Do you guys want to finish or..?"
"Wait." Another voice jumped in. Mine and Justin's vision turned back to look at Elizabeth step further out of the house and out into the front porch. "We can go?" Her eyes gleamed at the news.
"Yeah." Justin furrowed his eyebrows, looking back at me and waiting for an answer. "You didn't tell her?" He asked.
"I got caught up." I shrugged.
Shaking his head, Justin looked back at Elizabeth.
"You can go home now. It's all taken care of." He explained. "I'm here to give you guys a lift."
"W-What happened to Colt?" Elizabeth stuttered.
Justin looked back at me before smiling back at her. I studied his features as he spoke. His jaw was tense; eyes way too relaxed after dealing with Andrew.
Something wasn't right.
"We lost him in town. A message was sent and he knows he can't come near you again."
You could see the relief flushing through her body. A small sigh falling from her parted lips.
"So.. It's all good?" She furrowed her eyebrows.
Justin smiled softly. "It's all good."
Yup, something was defiantly up. I knew the cue.. Elizabeth had to leave.
"Hey, Liz," I called back. "Why don't you go get ready?" I asked. "We'll be out here."
Looking back at me then back at Justin, Elizabeth finally nodded and stepped back into the trailer. The door shutting closed.
I waited for the right moment.
Justin was already rubbing his hands over the temples of his forehead. Yup. I was right.
"Alright, tell me the truth." I walked up to him, gripping him by the shoulder in order to turn him around and face me.
Justin took his chance to get the right words together. I was growing impatient, blood beginning to boil.
"Did you or did you not lose Colt?" My voice raised in stern.
"No, we lost him alright." He was quick to answer that.
"Then what is it?" I asked.
Justin's dark brown eyes made contact with mine. Our noses aligning, inches apart.
What the Hell could it be now?
"He got away now.. But this is Colt we're talking about? The guy has it out for you!"
Justin's voice was certain. "I don't know man but.. I feel like he's going to come back for a retaliation."
"How do you know?" I asked.
"Because it's Fucking Colt, Jack!" He raised his voice.
Justin had to calm himself down from hitting something. If anyone else hates Colt just like I do, it's Justin. I knew what he was going through and he knew about me too.
"Listen, I know the way you feel about that girl.." He continued. "The other guys could be blind, but I'm not. And you know what? I think she's cool. I like her and honestly, I can see her as one of us.."
"Woah there.." I stopped him. "I don't want her getting involved in our group."
"Whatever, Jack.." He snapped. "She's already involved weather you like it or not."
I took a step back, letting him release all this anger he all of a sudden held inside.
"Colt is always taking things away from us." He paused. "And I feel bad that this girl is so helpless in all of this."
"She's not helpless." I interrupted. "You should've seen her last night."
"I mean in defending herself." He explained. "She's inexperienced, Jack. And I hate to break it to you, but you can't be by her side 24/7."
I let everything Justin was saying sink in. He made some very important points, points that never seemed to cross my mind before. Shit.
"We got away for now, but it won't be long before he decides to get back at us." Justin spoke again, this time more relaxed than before. "I just want you to be prepared."
I looked back at Justin noticed the complete worry in his eyes. Man, I've never seen him like this. Maybe things were more serious than I imagined with Elizabeth.
My mind went soaring from place to place, but only one question seemed to be the turning point for any other thought and is: What did I get myself into?
Before I could say anything else the door to the trailer slammed open. My attention was brought back to Liz who was stepping out of the trailer home wearing the same black dress from last night. Her hair was pulled back in a ponytail, heals still held in her hands.
"Ready." She smiled looking back at us.

E l i z a b e t h
The car ride back was rather silent than what I expected. Jack was serious, as always, and Justin.. Well.. Correct me if I'm wrong but, it felt as if he wasn't so happy. I mean, I've only met the guy like three times but I'm very good at reading people's expressions. Heck, that's how I get through I life with Mandy. But with Justin it was different. In all the times I've met him, he was always smiling and happy. Much of a gentlemen too, with manners and everything. I remember this because Jack was the complete opposite from him and it bothered me a bit that he couldn't be just a little bit like Justin. Today, he was quiet.. Serious too. He was worried..
I was brought back into reality as I felt the large vehicle come to a stop. I looked out the window and noticed my house.
Oh my house..
I've never been so happy to see my home before.
My vision flickered to the side to see James' house. Just as I had suspected, there was no car. James works today.
The backseat door swung open by the figure holding it from outside. I looked back at Jack and held onto his shoulders as he helped me down the large vehicle. I couldn't stop staring at my house. I was beyond content to finally be back.
The door slammed shut behind me. I looked back and noticed Justin was to remain inside his car, messing around with his phone. It was Jack who would be escorting me to my door, as always.
"Is he okay?" I asked quietly referring to Justin. I looked up at him as we waited for an oncoming car to drive past in order for us to cross the street.
Jack didn't look back at me, his concentration still on the car.
"He's fine." He nodded after a good moment.
I wasn't convinced with his answer.
Looking back both ways on the street, Jack continued moving to cross. His hand meeting my lower back to guide me besides him.
"He's doesn't seem fine." I continued.
Jack was the first one to step on the sidewalk, his long legs providing more of an advantage for that.
Jack said nothing towards my comment leading me to believe that I was right about Justin.. They were hiding something.
I let us reach the front steps of my porch, stepping up the five small steps to finally reach the door. I didn't wait.
"Jack." I gripped his arm.
Jack's eyes looked back down at my hand and where it was. His eyes slowly trailed the limb back to my face.
He seemed awfully intimidating, but scary. I'm not scared of him anymore, which is why I had no problem in speaking next.
"Is it about Colt?" I wondered, lips shaking at the sound of his name.
"I already told you, he's out of the picture." He quickly answered.
"Then what's going on?" I asked. "With both of you?"
Jack looked around. His hands digging into the pockets of his jeans, a move I've noticed he does whenever he's nervous. I only stared at him. I knew he was looking for the right thing to say so I didn't budge.
I was beginning to grow impatient.
Before I could state anything else I felt Jack's hands gently cup my cheeks. His action caught me by surprise. I wandered up to look into his eyes. His brown orbs remained in contact with mine for what felt to be a good minute or so. Not saying another word or showing much of any expression, he started caressing the side of my cheek with his thumbs. Before anything else could be said, Jack pulled me closer under his embrace.
I remained in shock, slowly letting myself into the hug. I couldn't find myself doing anything else. I wasn't going to pull him away, this was the most sensible he was with me in plain sight. Whatever it was that was bothering him must've been big.
I felt him slowly draw back, his hands still holding me close by my face.
I placed my hands over his, watching as his stern look turned into a small half smile.
"I'm just sad I have to leave you for tonight." He admitted.
I felt the honesty in his words. Closing my eyes, I nuzzled deeper into his touch. My other hand gripping his upon my cheek.
"You don't have to go.." I softly spoke.
A small chuckle forced its way out of his mouth.
"Yeah.. I kinda do." He nodded, not giving further information on his remark.
We remained silent after that. I can't believe I've become so willing towards Jack. Never in my life, not even to James, have I asked a guy to stay home with me. Even if it was only for a little while longer.
So why now? Why him? Why Jack?
"But I want to keep seeing you." His head tilted to get a closer look at me.
"Really?" I arched a brow. "You still want to see me even though I'm the reason Colt is after you again?" It apparently came out as a joke.
Jack couldn't contain his urge to roll his head back in laughter. After his moment of amusement, he looked back down at me with the biggest, most cheesiest smile ever.
"All the more reason to keep seeing you." He smiled.
"Well then!" I playfully pushed him back from me.
"Oh come on!" Jack came back to me moments after he was pushed away, his smile never leaving his features.
Well I guess this was a better state to see him in than the serious way he was in before.
"I enjoy spending time with you." His laughing toned down a bit, hands coming back to their previous position on my cheeks. "But you've had enough of me to last a whole week." He joked.
I chuckled along with him; not knowing how to answer back.
"So when will that week be over?" I looked up at him, eyes growing nervous. God, I can't believe I said that!
Jack laughed at my response, finding more amusement in this new me..
"Soon." He leaned closer.
I grew surprised as his lips only made contact with my forehead. It was an odd move, even for Jack. But it was strangely satisfying.
A loud honking noise startled Jack and I to look back into the road. Justin was still sitting in the driver's seat pointing back at his wrist watch for Jack to come back.
Laughing, Jack shook his head. We looked back at each other at the same time, smiling towards Justin's actions.
Jack traced his tongue over his dry lips, making them moist again. He smiled seconds after.
"I have to get going."
I lightly nodded. "Okay."
His hands were now over my forearms. He took one last good look at me before releasing his grip and walking away back to the car.
I couldn't shake off the smile I wore on my face as I watched his strong back walk away from my house. He was attractive, I never denied myself from admitting that. Strong too. He treated me good, and for the first time since meeting Jack.. I think it's safe to say that I'm starting to like him...
Snapping out of my own thoughts, I turned over to face my front door. I heard the engine to Justin's car turn on again, causing me to look back at them.
Jack was just getting on. He waved goodbye from the glass of Justin's car and all too quickly, I watched them speed away from the street.
I sigh of relief escaped my mouth.
Turning back around, I already had my keys in my hand. The knob turned and I entered.
My house was quiet, dark too. Only the dim rays of the morning sun were shining through the closed bands of the blinds above them. It was all as I last left it. Not even Mandy has set ground in this place.
The door shut along with me locking it up. I moved over to the windows and started pulling the string down for the blinds to open. Sunlight radiated through the house.
I continued with this throughout the entire kitchen and dining room space which was divided by the open hallway.
Ah yes, this was much better.
I took off my heals by the entrance of the house and moved towards the back of the house. Passing the big open space divided by two grand walls, I started stepping up the half landing stairs. I made a turn and continued my way up. The lights were flicked on as I turned to my left, sore feet carrying me up to my bedroom.
All I wanted to do was meet my bed. Soon enough it was going to be 1 and James' shift for today would be over. Knowing him, my house would be the first place he'll go to when he gets out. I just wanted to rest. Being that my phone was completely out of charge the entire time, I finally had a chance to really get away from the world after coming back to it. I couldn't let this chance of mine go to waste.
My hand gripped the door handle. I swung it open and stepped inside only to shout immediately after doing so.
"AHHH!!!!"
"IT'S JUST US!" One of them exclaimed, turning on the lamp by my nightstand to illuminate the room.
My heart was racing out of my chest. The two figures that stood around my room almost killed me on the spot from fear. I was paranoid, being that I was just involved in a scary situation like this, that I didn't notice it was my friends who were here and not Colt..
"It's just us!" The same voice explained again, the voice that I soon noticed to be Alex's.
"What are you guys doing here!" I exclaimed, adrenaline still kicking in as I felt my heart beat out of my chest from under the palm of my hand.
"We came to see you, of course?" My other friend, Emma stood up from the bed.
"And you guys couldn't wait until I got home?" My voice raised but that was only because I was still in shock.
"I have a spare key, remember?" Alex waved the object in her keychain in front of her before dropping back over my bed. "And besides.." She crossed her arms. "We were going to wait for you, but Liz, we haven't seen or heard from you in days?"
"Wh-Where is your car?" I asked, remembering that I didn't see any sign of Alex's car in my driveway.
"We took an über." She shrugged. "My car is at the auto shop."
"We were worried about you." Emma added, getting us back in track to the what the situation was.
"We thought you were mad at us for what happened the last time we saw each other.." Alex stepped closer.
Though my friends nearly gave me a stroke, I felt pretty bad for them. I feel bad for the way I acted and for the way it all turned out. I had forgotten all about that fight, not that it was something I wanted to forget, but because I had other things keeping me occupied in the mean time that I just never had the chance to get back to. They were still worried about me. For me it was something hard to believe because these days it's hard to find friends like them.. Friends who care.
"Alex.." I paused. "Emma.. I'm not mad."
"Then where have you been disappearing to?" Alex questioned. "Your phone was off. Mandy has been sleeping over at a friend's house for days.. Your boss says she hasn't seen you in a while.."
"We even asked James if he saw you." Emma spoke.
"What did he say?" I quickly asked, curious to find out what he said.
"He said he hasn't seen you either." Alex retorted.
"That's when we knew something was up and decided to come to your house." Emma finished.
I stood still as I let everything they were telling me sink in. They went through all that trouble, just to find out where I was?
"We even tried to find a way to contact Jack." Alex's voice brought me right back on the edge towards the sound of his name..
"Jack?"
"Yeah." Emma shrugged. "We thought that, if you weren't with James, you might as well be with Jack?"
"But we had no luck.." Alex stepped in. "Apparently just because you're well known in this town doesn't mean everyone has your number too.." Her eyes widened as she made that remark towards herself.
"What makes you think I was with Jack?" I asked. I had a fight with them over this same problem. Rubbing it in their faces that I was with the problem of our argument wouldn't make matters better, at least not for me. I had to give them some time.
"Well for starters, your wearing an awfully formal evening dress at 11am in the morning." Alex stepped closer. "You have no shoes. You can tell you still have make up resido from last night. And you don't even have a car so.. How did you get here again?"
I felt like I was a criminal being interrogated for a crime he didn't commit. I wasn't too upset with this though because I know where they were coming from.. And I also My Alex. She always so protective over her stuff, friendships included. She loves the details, pays attention to every little bit them. But all that desire and passion she has inside of her, sometimes drains out in ways that make you believe you're in an interrogation. AKA, me right now.
"Oh my god, did you hook up with Jack Gilinsky?" Emma quickly gasped as the period of silence grew stronger.
"No!" I quickly responded.
"But you were with Jack Gilinsky?" Alex arched a brow, the look on her face becoming more and more skeptical over me.
"What is this?" I asked. "An interrogation?"
"You basically just went through your first walk of shame.. You don't want to talk about this to your girlfriends?" Alex tilted her head a little to the side in a form of asking me the question.
"Liz, we're just worried about you." Emma cleared up before I could reply to Alex. Yup, that's Emma, always the calm one yet most genuine one.
She stepped closer to where Alex was standing.
"You're our best friend. And we're sorry for ganging up on you that other night."
He apology meant more to me than I think she could imagine. That was not a good night.. I hate fighting with my friends, especially over a guy. It was something we promised not to ever argue about, and look, it happened that night and nearly tore us apart. I'm over all of that. I just want my girls back..
I watched as the silence grew longer. I guess Emma was waiting for Alex to add onto her apology and grew angry when she saw Alex wasn't admitting for anything. That's when she shoved Alex against her shoulder with her own. The shove made Alex look back at Emma's steady stare and grunt.
Sighing, Alex looked back at me.
"Fine.. We're sorry.." She finally let out.
"We miss our friend." Emma continued, a soft warm smile approaching her pink plump lips.
I couldn't stay mad at them. Heck, I even got an apology out of Alex! MY ALEX! Now that's something you don't see everyday!
"I miss my friends too." I finally gave in.
Awing, Emma took Alex by the hand and soon enough started making their way towards me. Their arms wrapped around my body from both halves, heads nuzzling in against mine to provide a more sweeter embrace.
They have no idea how badly I needed this.
My mind started focusing more on the hug and then I noticed something was missing..
"Hey? Where's Charlotte?" I felt bad for asking this so late.
"Working." Alex spoke, remaining in tact with our position. "She wanted to come but you know how her boss is."
Ah yes.. The ol' My Boss Needed Me Excuse.. I mean, I'm not one to judge, maybe her boss really did need her to come in. But Alex and Emma weren't the challenge here.. They liked Jack unlike Charlotte who wasn't so pleased with us talking. She's always been the tougher one. Though Alex is tough too, she's also more easy going and optimistic. Charlotte is both tough, and a realist. There's no getting through her with life decisions and all. She's the hardest for people to like and even harder for her to like you back. To this day I'm still surprised we're so close..
I don't regret her friendship, I just know she has higher standards than the others. What if she ignored coming here today because of her thoughts against Jack and I?
"Hey..?" A voice brought me back from the trance I was in. "Do you?" Emma sniffed quickly, taking in a stronger scent my body was giving off. Her head backed away. "Do I smell pine cone?"
Alex too went back down for a sniff around my neck.
"Mm.. I smell it too..?" She commented.
I immediately started to panic. It's the scent from the forest! Now what are they going to think of me?
"Uh.. Yankee Candle?" I chuckled.
Both girls looked back at each other and smirked.
"Is it? Is it really from your romantic candle light dinner with Jack?" Emma's smile grew wide on her face in delight.
"Or the candle light bed action that happened next?" Alex arched a brow.
"Oh God!" I quickly moved from their embrace, walking over towards my bed.
"Oh C'mon on, Liz!" Alex followed behind me. Emma was curious too.
"Oh Alex, if she doesn't want to say anything that happened between them then we should just let her be.." Emma continued.
"Thank you, Em." I smiled, turning back to face them.
"AH-HA!" Alex raised her index finger. "So you were with him!"
Crap. I shouldn't have said anything.
As much as I wanted to hide it, I couldn't stop the rushing heat approaching my body and soon enough, cheeks. I imagined myself from their perspective, red as can be. I hate that Jack has this strong affection towards me, it makes me weak to the truth. We did have a moment last night. Though it wasn't like anything my friends were probably thinking of now, it was defiantly something. The talk we had, the kissing that came afterwards.. And let's not forget the way we slept last night and how we met this morning when he was only wrapped around in a towel..
"Oh my god, you have to tell us!" Alex shrieked in excitement.
Yup, it was just like old times.
* * *
After the countless begging I've received from my friends to please tell the l'm why happened between Jack and I, I finally gave in.
I wasn't dumb though, I left out the most important part of that night. Jack's story between Serena and the Cobras wasn't for me to tell, not even to my friends and especially not James who has become familiar with some of the characters already. Jack trusted me enough to tell that story to and I wasn't going to betray that. I also left out the part of Colt and the whole museum chase. Explaining the story on how the guy they sorta hate/like shooting people at the MET isn't really a kickstart to the road on getting them to like Jack. So instead I bent the truth a little bit..
I was at the MET and saw Jack. We got talking and he took me back to his place. All we did was talk, which if you think about it, that's what we really did in the woods. His house smells like pine cones because his massive home is up in the mountains, again, another true factor, which also explains the smell I carry. I was bending the truth.
I don't think they had to know the entire story. I'm still letting it sink in for me too. Besides, it's not like anything beyond intimate happened with Jack..
"Oh.. My God!" The words slipped out of Alex's mouth. "You had the night with Jack Gilinsky!" She whispered his name. Her tone was rather excited though.
"The night?" I arched a brow.
"Yes!" She exclaimed. "The night where you two finally clicked!" She demonstrated by lacing her fingers together.
"Uh.. We did not, click.." I emphasized with laughter.
We were now thrown all around my bed. Alex and Emma by the backrest and me towards the other end. My fingers fiddled with the fringes around the outer edge of a decorative pillow.
"It was mostly just a talk about him." I continued, eyes focused on my twining fingers. "His life.. His past.." I whispered.
The thoughts to not say anything about that flooded to the front of my brain.
"What about you?" Emma asked. "Did you tell him about yourself?"
"No, not really." I shook my head.
"So he doesn't know about--"
"Alex!" My head looked up immediately, stopping her from finishing her sentence.
"Sorry.." She sincerely apologized.
Sighing, I began to speak. "It doesn't matter.. It was still nice knowing a little bit more about him." I shrugged.
"Bet he doesn't do that with many people." Emma shrugged Alex's shoulder.
Alex, on the other hand, looked back at her seriously and shook her head. Emma's smile quickly faded and she went back to look at me.
I couldn't help but laugh at the reaction from my friends. They really didn't know how to handle this situation.. And Alex is a GUY EXPERT!
"Oh Gosh.." Alex's lips soon curled. "You're starting to like him.." She urged. "I mean, really really like him!"
"No." I denied again with a shake to my head.
"Stop lying, you're not fooling anyone." She continued. "You like Jack Gilinsky." She paused. "And he likes you too."
The thought was impossible to believe. I couldn't get that through my head, I just couldn't. Sure he has his affect on me and I've seen him go through some dramatic changes. But what if affection is all he's really looking from me? He has a fame for this stuff. Maybe this is all part of the plan to lure me in and then leave me once he's done with me?
I hated thinking about him like that, but I'll be foolish if I didn't.
I like Jack.. But I've never done this before and it scares me...
"Awe!" Emma gushed. "She's blushing!"
I immediately cupped my hands over my cheeks, trying to hide the heat from my friends. This was a completely new side to me that they've seen in over the plenty of years I've known them..
"Is it bad that I want to see him again?" I sounded shy to even say that out loud.
"Of course not!" Alex got up on her knees, moving over closer to me so that she can place her hands over mine. She brought them back down my lap. "You'd be stupid not to feel this way.. Especially after everything he's done for you!"
We all shared a laugh.
"Now that doesn't mean just because a guy does you good.. You have to turn yourself into him." Emma pointed out, also coming closer to our newly formed circle.
"I know." I chuckled.
My mind shifted to other things. I'd be crazy if I didn't know that, especially being raised with my mother and all. And my father, oh god. There would be no getting through him on that subject.
When I looked up, Alex's head was tilted, eyes inquisitively trained on my face. I gave her a questioning look before she spoke.
"How far have you gone with Jack?"
My eyes widened in surprise as I stuttered to find the right words. Cheeks flushing with a new deep shade of red.
"Alex!" Emma exclaimed.
"What!?" She looked back at her with wide eyes.
By this time the girls were now intently waiting for my reply.
"Umm.." I glanced at their faces.
I wasn't quite sure how to phrase it. The subject hasn't really been approached before. I shifted from my slouched position and sat up straight. My eyes once again looking up at my friend's plain faces.
"He.. Um.. I.. We made out.." I stuttered. "And I was taking off his clothes.."
I couldn't help but shyly smile, thinking back to the time Jack and I shared in the trailer home.
I started to feel uncomfortable as my friends didn't say anything. Emma's mouth formed an "o" shape before she clasped the palm of her hand above it.
"Elizabeth Viera.." Alex gasped. "You wanted to have sex..?"
"No!" I quickly stated. Now this I was sure I wasn't denying. Despite my age and this generation's aspiration on it, I'm not ready for sex and I wasn't pursuing it either!
"It was getting hot." I explained. "And I don't know.. I just wanted to be with him.."
I was still blushing, but their openness to the conversation was something I felt needed applauding. There was no judgement. Nothing like it would've been if Charlotte was here.
"Honey.." Alex continued. "If you get hot, you turn on the AC. Not get closer to the body heat of another person."
"Alex!" Emma exclaimed again for what seemed to be the hundredth time today.
"She's right." I admitted.
Both friends looked at me in shock that I actually admitted to something like that.
"I just wanted to be with him, but nothing sexual.." I explained.
"Nothing?" Alex asked. "Nothing at all?"
I remained silent.
"If there was nothing then you're telling us you see him like a brother.. And I know that's not the case." Alex explained. "It's okay, Liz, you can tell us how you feel. I would be lying if I didn't say I wanted to sleep with that friend of Jack's from the club the other night.."
Oh god!
"Justin!" I exclaimed.
Alex's face smirked. "Yeah.. That's the guy.."
"I think I'm going to be sick.." I cupped a hand over my mouth.
"Relax!" Her hand came over my shoulder. "That's obviously never going to happen and I won't enforce it either because, heck, guys come to me!"
We all shared a laugh.
"I'm just trying to get you to see that having those feelings over a guy are completely normal." She explained. "Nothing has to happen just because you feel that way."
I remained silent, but understood what she meant.
"I think you should see him again." Alex leaned in closer.
I grew abruptly astonished with the words that came out of her mouth. Was this really happening? Were my friends actually telling me to keep seeing Jack?
"What?" I arched a brow.
"You're obviously having doubts about this guy if anything will ever happen?" She explained. "Ask him out, have some fun.. See what goes on."
I laughed upon the thought.
"Yeah.. That won't happen." I admitted, looking down.
"Why?" Emma asked.
"He doesn't date and he sure as Hell isn't the relationship type of guy." I explained a bit gloom.
"I... don't know..." Alex tilted her head.
This made me look back at her. What was she up to now?
"All I'm saying is that the guy changed many things for you already. For example, opening up." She paused. "Maybe you can change his thoughts on dating too?"
"I don't want anyone to change for me." I shook my head.
"I'm not saying you have to change him.. But teach him a little somethin'... Take him out of his comfort zone.." She explained.
Hearing this sorta made me regret saying anything in the first place.. This was just the kind of conversation I was trying to avoid. It made me feel pitiful, as if Jack was the stud captain of the high school football team and I was the quiet invisible geek girl who was desperate to be with him yet knew she didn't stand the chance.
"There's going to be bonfire this Friday night at the beach to celebrate the first day of autumn." Alex continued. "Ask him to come with you. It doesn't have to be a date.." She chuckled. "Just, two people hanging out. See how you like it.. How he likes it. Nothing has to be rushed." She shook her head. "Plus," A smirk grew upon her face. "It gives you that chance you wanted to see him again.."
I rolled my eyes, chuckling along with Alex and Emma.
Alex stood up seconds before I could think about anything else. "Well, it's almost 1 and my shift at the restaurant is about to start."
I watched as she quickly recollected her bag and coat.
"Oh, yeah!" Emma stood up behind her. "I also have a dentist appointment to go to!"
"Liz, are you sure you're okay staying here on your own?" Alex asked.
"Yeah." I chuckled, following behind them towards my bedroom door.
Alex opened the door but halted before stepping out. She paused, turning back at me. A soft smile approaching her lips.
"I'm glad we talked." She nodded.
I replicated the smile on my face. "Me too."
She was already out the door before she stopped in her tracks once again.
"Seriously though." Alex point back at me. "You should really think about what I said."
"I will." I nodded along with a smile.
"Bye, Liz." Emma's arms wrapped around my neck in a warm embrace.
"Bye, Em." I smiled above her shoulder. "Thanks for checking up on me."
"Anytime." We pulled apart.
"REMEMBER!" Alex called back as she started making her way down the stairs.
"Okay!" I called back, waving as they escorted themselves out of my house.
Well, that went better than I expected..
* * *
I shut the door to my bedroom after stepping out from my nice warm shower. I was bathed, shaved, and moisturized. I was in the best state I could've been in days.
I walked over to my nightstand where I had previously placed my phone to charge before entering the shower. Since I was completely out of battery, starting the phone again took a while. Now was when I finally had the chance to look through it, and when I did, I wasn't surprised.
5 missed calls from James. 8 unread messages.
James:
Liz!
James:
Liz, how are you?
James:
Where are you?
James:
Please call me whenever you can!
James:
I picked up Mandy. She'll be staying with me at my place and then I'll take her to her dance practice tomorrow afternoon.
Please call me when you can
James:
I hope you're okay. Your friends came looking by for you this morning. I told them I haven't seen you. Please call!
James:
I'm really worried about you Liz. I told Karen you have a stomach virus.
CALL ME!
James:
I just need to know you're okay.
Please call me when you can.
I felt so bad. James was with me that night. He's aware of what happened and was put into the chase. I had to call him.
Dialing his number, I pressed the phone to my ear.
One Ring.
"Elizabeth?" His voice quickly exclaimed.
"Wow, that was quicker than I expected." I tried to joke.
"Not funny, Liz." He was serious. "Where are you?"
"Home." I answered.
"What? You were home this entire time?" He exclaimed on the line.
"No, I got here this morning and then Alex and Emma came by. They left and I went into the shower." I explained. Okay, it was no excuse and I hated myself for not reaching him sooner; but I'm doing it now. Knowing James, this wasn't going to bother him much, it wasn't the big picture.
"Are you okay?" He asked.
"I'm okay." I nodded.
"I-I wanna see you?" He paused. "Can I come over? My shift is over and I'm on my way to pick up Mandy from practice."
"Thank you, James." I ran a hand through my hair, hooking onto my shoulder as I spoke. "Of course you can come by, I'll be here."
"Alright." He agreed. "And Liz, I'm glad your back."
I smiled against my phone. "Glad to be back."
* * *
I rushed up to the front door as I heard the doorbell ring. I was fully clothed now, a big maroon college t-shirt and gray joggers dressed me down.
The door swung open. Behind it stood no other than James and Mandy.
"Look at that, you decided to show up." Mandy crossed her arms, still dressed in her pink ballerina outfit and a black bomber jacket.
Not saying anything else, she moved past me and into our house.
I watched as she placed her stuff down and pulled out her phone, feet carrying her up the stairs to her room.
"Liz."
My vision looked back at James who was just stepping into my home; arms quickly wrapping around my body. I gave into his embrace. His strong, tall body lifting me off my feet as he stood up straight in our hold. His head nuzzled against my neck and shoulder, tightening his grip around my waist.
We held this position for a good minute before he let my feet touch the ground again. His long arm stretched over me to shut the door. Not a moment after, he began to speak.
"Wha-Whe-" He struggled to find the right question to ask.
"I'm okay." I helped him.
James placed his hands over his waist, the flaps of his open brown coat falling behind his arms as he stood in position.
"What happened that night?" He asked.
The look of confusion he displayed made me feel bad; guilty too that it was all because of me. He deserved an explanation.
"Come.."
I guided James back over to our sitting room area.
We both sat in the same couch and I began to explain everything. James was the most the caught up with this mess and now because of last night, he played a major part in it too.
I spoke and I spoke. The talk could've lasted hours from my perspective. There was so much to fill him in on. So much I wanted to say.
I explained that Colt was looking for me that day because of what happened at the party at Justin's house. Again, the Serena story was left untouched. I told him we made it out and Jack took us to a safe place out in the woods. I emphasized that nothing happened. James gets really protective, especially with guys. Ever since my Dad left, James took the role. He was my brother, my best friend. I know last night left him pretty shaken up.
"I-I don't know what to say?" He stuttered, head tilted back to me.
"I'm okay, James." I assured him again, knowing that that's all he really cared about.
"Not about that.." He shook his head. "About Jack." "I don't know how I feel about that guy anymore.." He explained.
His thoughts left me crushed. He was the first and only one to understand me for a really long time.
"What?" I furrowed my eyebrows.
"Liz, this guy is known for being dangerous." He shook his head. "And look at what he put you through? What he put us through!"
"Yeah but that wasn't his fault." I defended. "And he got me out. I am safe because of him."
"Yeah, for now."
"I'm sorry but what do you know about any of this?" I asked.
"What do you know about any of this?" He retorted. "A month ago you had your head in your books. You wouldn't hurt a fly even if you wanted to. Now look at you?"
"What is that suppose to mean?" I arched a brow.
"I mean, you've already done some crazy shit after meeting this guy. Shit you would never dream of doing and that worries me, Liz." He looked back at me. "How much do you really trust this guy?"
"Very much actually." I defended.
"And how do you know that Colt guy won't be coming after you anytime soon?" He arched a brow.
James loved being the smartest guy in the room with all the right and logical questions.
"Jack's guys took him out of the picture. He's no longer a threat." I explained.
"So they killed him!" He exclaimed.
"No!" I quickly shook my head. "They threatened him or something?"
"Is that what he told you?" James asked.
I looked back at him with the same questionable look in my eyes. Not pushing the subject further more, I watched as James
"I'm glad you're okay Liz, really, I am. And I'm thankful a guy like Jack was there that night to get you out safe and sound without taking any advantage of you.. but I don't believe that bad guys like Colt quit like that so easily, especially over a threat made by their opponent."
"So you don't like Jack?" I asked.
"I don't know yet." He shook his head. "I want to like him because I know you like him. But honestly, after what I saw that night.. You can say I've been having second thoughts."
The room was silent for a good long period. I was trying to think of the right words to say because I wasn't going to let James start hating on Jack after he's been so helpful and not judgmental about any of it.
I deeply inhaled.
"What you saw that night was a guy getting me out safely from danger." I continued. "Doesn't that tell you anything about him?"
James looked back at me. "It tells me that he was the one who got you in that mess in the first place."
Nothing was getting through him. I've never been in a situation like this, especially with James. I wanted it to end.
Taking his hands into mine, I gently squeezed. James looked down at our laps and noticed what I was doing. Finally.. I was getting some reaction from him.
"I trust him, James." I nodded. "I get he has his ways, and his past, and his enemies. But I trust him. He hasn't done anything bad to you? Why is it so hard for you to understand?"
James got stiff. He removed his hands from my own and I noticed his jaw tightening up.
"If you don't recall, that guy left you heartbroken before the whole showdown. Liz, I've never seen you like that, not ever in the whole 20 years I've known you." He paused. "I understand he can protect you, I witnessed first hand the mountains he's willing to push for you. -- But emotionally?" He got serious from his question. "The guy has no emotional bone in his body, none to match with you that is. You're kind, okay? You wear your heart on your sleeve and put others before yourself. I always admired that about you." He nodded. "But I'm telling you, Liz, what that guy did to you with that girl that night, even if it was to protect you, was way out of line." He paused again, this time letting it all sink into me before he spoke again. "So what do you think is going to happen when he does it for real? It will break me apart. And that, Liz, is why I'm having doubts about him."
I never noticed this affected him so much. I already forgot about what Jack did that night with Ivy. Shame on me. I should've thought about those consequences he just mentioned. It wasn't okay what he did with Ivy, just like James said, even if it was to protect me. I was so caught up in the moment.. I just.. I don't even know anymore.
"I know you worry about me, James." I looked down. "But I'm old enough to do that on my own now. I'm twenty years old." I explained.
Not even that could go through his head.
"I don't care how old you are?" James shook his head. "I made a promise to your Dad, Liz. I'm going to take care of you and your family no matter what."
"Thank you, James." I raised my hand up to his shoulders. "But we're not your responsibility."
James eyes pierced back into mine. If words could cut, mine would've slaughtered him. I didn't mean for it to come out like that, nor did I intended to hurt his feelings. But it had to be said. James grew really found of my father and his word meant the world to him. He's been looking out for us for years now. He's just a kid himself. That had to get through his head.
"We appreciate everything you've done for us." I nodded. "Everything you did, still are, and are going to keep doing for me."
My remark made him smile. Both of us released a small chuckle before James recollected himself again and started to speak.
"You can't stop me from ever looking out for you." He shook his head. "And.. That's all I'm doing here, you know?"
I nodded my head, agreeing with him on that.
"I just.." He dipped his head. "I don't want to see you get hurt again."
"This isn't like the hurt I've dealt with before." I shook my head.
"You're right." He nodded. "It's worse.."
My eyes flickered down as he made contact with mine seconds later. I was so inexperienced in all this. As embarrassing as it all sounded to have to hear all of this advice from your older, much more experienced, "brother" you can say, is defiantly not how I imagined this talk ever going like. I pictured my mother at least.
Oh my mother.. How I miss her so much already.
"If you're going to give this guy a chance," He continued. "I just want you to be sure of it. Because it's not fun being on the dumped side of the stick.."
I was confused.
"But.. Aren't you the one to always dump the girl?"
James head bowed down in sudden guilt.
"Ahh.." He pronounced. "Yeah, I just said that to sound like a man.." He shook his head. "I know, I'm pathetic.."
"James..?" My hand rested over his shoulder, causing his eyes to flicker back at me. "You didn't have to lie about being dumped."
"It sucks, Liz.." He nodded. "I really do try but.. Girls want guys like Jack." He continued. "Dangerous.. Mysterious.."
"Is that why you don't like him?" I smirked, resting my elbow on the back rest of the couch. "Because he's taking all your girls?"
The sunshine from the window behind us gleamed on James as he spoke.
"No.." His eyes went wide, his tone soft as could be before quietly chuckling. "He's just taking my favorite one.."
My heart fluttered with love.
"Awe.. Jamie!" I playfully messed with his hair. "I'll always be your girl."
"Not the hair!" He whined, leaning back to fix it back in the messy hairdo he likes it to be as.
I couldn't help but laugh a little. I never knew this story to James. We are pretty close and know just about everything. This I didn't expect. And now I find out he feels intimidated by Jack too? Who knew? James is not ugly, and he's a great guy. A month ago I would've said he's better than Jack.. Heck, maybe he still is? I don't even know him that well to start labeling.
"Jamie.." I chuckled. "You could've told me?"
"And make you believe I'm a total loser?" He arched a brow. "No thanks."
"I don't think you're a loser." I admitted with a shake to my head. "If anything, those girls are the losers."
"Hell yeah they are!" He joked.
James smirked at the sight of me smiling. Yup, we were back to who we were.
My heart fluttered in delight as our good laughter died down. I really needed this right now. My head dropped down to the palm of my hand which was on the backboard of the couch. A smile heavily displayed on my face.
My state didn't go unnoticed though.
"What?" He chuckled back, looking at me.
I shook my head and focused my smile to my lap. "I'm just glad to have you."
My gaze was brought back by the touch of a hand coming up to my chin and raising it up.
Not saying another word, James brought me closer and wrapped his strong arms around my body. I felt warm, safe even.
Wrapping my arms around his waist, I held him closer. My eyes fluttered closed and I deeply inhaled.
That's when I knew it. All James ever did, ever does, is look after me. I wasn't aware of that before, but I'm well aware of it now. He's my best friend.. Family even. I meant what I said. I trust him most out of anyone else. He's just always been there. Now, I don't know if it was my fathers words or just the fact that he loves our little family so much that he's this dedicated to looking after us, but I do know I'm glad he does it.
"You'll always have me." He whispered so comfortably over my shoulder.
* * *
Feeling exhausted from the day that was brought upon me, all the visits and talking, I was finally glad to say that I could finally go to bed.
It was night now. James and I talked the entire day, ordered some food and even caught up on an episode of The Walking Dead until it was time for him to leave. It was defiantly a good way to spend my day after coming back from the state of the trailer home.. After experiencing everything that happened.
Even Mandy was calm. She wasn't the nicest person on earth but she was okay. I still didn't tell her anything about the MET or where I've been. Oh God No! I even begged James not to say a thing, to her or anyone. Like Jack mentioned before, the less people who know, the better.
I turned on my lamp before shuffling under the sheets of my bed. Everything was calm. Everyone was in bed and it's time I should get to that too.
I was getting comfortable against my pillow; covering my body with the soft blanket before a sudden ring brought my attention back on alert.
I felt my phone vibrate around my mattress.
I grunted heavily as I shuffled around the sheets in order to find it. I sat up as I retrieved the object back in my hands.
Pushing my hair back behind my ear, I yawned and unlocked the screen. Imagining it was just a message from James or one of my friends, I clicked on the message bubble with the small red dot besides it.
The screen opened up to a contact that I was defiantly not expecting.
Jack:
How is everything back home?
I frowned upon the question. I've never received a text like this from Jack..? I don't hate the text, I just find myself in an awkward position from the receiving side of the message being that he doesn't do this kind of stuff.
My fingers fiddled around the bottom of my screen as I continued to type.
Good
I bit my bottom lip as my thumb hovered over the send button. My fingers quickly added to the message.
Jack:
Good. How about you?
I hit the send button and watched the little three gray dots load as he began to immediately reply back.
Okay..
Another message was quickly sent after that one.
Jack:
Except I'm missing one thing.. You.
I felt my cheeks instantly burn with heat. My nervous fingers trailed from the edge of the phone to the screen keyboard to reply.
You'll be fine LOL
I waited patiently as he continued typing.
Jack:
Oh, Thanks for that!
I couldn't help but laugh as I read the message. The player was being played.
Anytime!
I smiled as I sent the sarcastic bubble.
A good minute or so passed. He read the message, or so it showed up, but the loading bubbles didn't come up. Which is why my attention was at its highest once I noticed the ring come up and flash on my screen I got a new message.
Jack:
I want to see you again
I replied almost immediately. I regretted being so attentive with him.
One condition.. No more trailer homes
I teased, smiling as I waited for his response.
Jack:
You got yourself a deal
I smiled as I read the message.
The rest of the night consisted with just that, smiling at text messages back and forth. It was a nice feeling for a change, to feel as if we weren't running from Colt or being chased by cops. For the first time since meeting Jack Gilisnky.. We were finally having a decent conversation...
