Prologue
Ben stops just short of the door to Tom's suite. "I'm sure he's going to be quite happy to see you Rani, darling."
I bite my lip as I stare blankly at the door for what seems an eternity. "I honestly can't believe he is getting married, Ben."
Though it'd been a shock, what exactly was I expecting? - that a man like Tom would remain single forever?
Deep down I know that I should be happy for him, after all it wasn't like I wanted him to spend his life waiting in vain for me; especially when I knew very well that we could never be together. But at least we're still friends. Aren't we...?
No matter what, I needed to put on a happy face for him and give him my unconditional support.
"Thank you for calling me," I smile politely at Ben. Had it not been for Benedict I would have opened my morning paper and read about the wedding along with the rest of the world.
"Sure Rani. I know he wants to see you..." He furrowed his brow and scratched the top of his head. "I think he was just scared to call you." He shrugged, then smoothed his hands down my arms. "Don't worry, love - it'll be fine."
I don't know what to do with that, but I'm left to wonder by myself as I watch Ben walk away.
After trying to still my jangling nerves, I hold my breath and knock on the door. I need to be ready, to steady myself. Am I really sure that I want to see him light up with happiness and love that's meant for someone else?
Some part of me still wants that look on his face that belongs to me alone, but I have no right to demand that of him now.
Tom isn't mine anymore, and will never be again.
