Chapter 3 - The Mirage Isles
Once the three of them appeared, it was an empty hallway just as Sparrow said, although one of the servants walked out of the hallway just as they arrived.
"See? Now where's this Nostradamus dude?" Seymour asked, looking around.
"Just down here. Once we've talked I'll head to my Chambers then we can leave." Sparrow told them before she walked down the hall.
Seymour and Fenna followed her down the hall but stayed outside the room when she entered.
"You guys do know you could risk getting caught if you stay out there?" Sparrow raised a brow.
"We're not used to big rooms, it's strange." Seymour stated as he pulled Fenna inside with him.
"Well welcome to a big room with loads of.. potions and things." Sparrow skipped slightly into the room.
Seymour kept looking around, almost as if he didn't trust his surroundings while Fenna began studying all of the items in the room.
"They won't kill you wolf boy." Sparrow chuckled slightly, still not knowing his name.
"It's not that, he doesn't like being in enclosed spaces. Rough past." Fenna told her, still looking at everything around.
Sparrow nodded slowly, going over to a window and opened it for Seymour.
She then put her hands behind her back and walked around, "Nostradamus?"
"Is that you princess?" Came the voice of an older man.
"Indeed." Sparrow nodded, "Although we've talked about this. No 'princess' here. I'm just Ash."
She glanced at Fenna and Seymour, she knew they knew that Ashton wasn't her first name now.
A bearded man poked his head around a shelf,"So, who are these?"
"This is my friend Fenna and her friend.. I still do not know his name yet." Sparrow stated.
"And I'm not telling you my name until you tell me yours." Seymour crossed his arms.
"Alright, wolf boy it is." Sparrow shrugged, turning back to Nostradamus, "Rememeber how you've taught me of the Elder Council?"
"That's where they're from, I presume?" Nostradamus walked over.
"I presume so too." Sparrow nodded, "And the Elder Council.. Want me to go on a mission."
"Yeah, there's a bunch of magical inbalances so they want us to bring her with us to fix it because she's got powers to." Fenna explained it all for her.
Sparrow quickly turned to Nostradamus.
"Fenna has fire powers so I wanted to show how alike we were." She defended herself before he could pipe in.
"Do you know why she has powers?" Seymour questioned.
"Indeed." Nostradamus nodded, "Let's just say.. some people don't like Ashton. When she was a baby things went wrong."
"So was she cursed or something?" Seymour raised a brow.
"Yes." Sparrow answered simply while she walked over to some herbs and potions.
Fenna nodded along before turning to Seymour,"You don't think Alec has wandered off, do you?"
"He shouldn't have." Seymour shook his head, "I.. Could go check if he has? You and the princess shouldn't be that long after me."
"Don't get caught." Fenna told him as he ran out.
"You really need to get the cage sorted." Sparrow looked towards Nostradamus who was standing by a small bird cage.
"I'll get it done eventually." Nostradamus brushed it off.
"You've been saying that for weeks." Sparrow stated while she took a bag and put some herbs and potions in it,"I'll be back as soon as I can. You never saw me, I'm still kidnapped by that witch."
"I'll have you know I'm not a witch." Fenna crossed her arms.
"I think he can tell that." Sparrow looked back at Fenna, "The others just don't know that."
"I'm still mad though, I don't like having my species misidentified." Fenna stated, leaning against the wall.
"When I'm back at court, I shall correct them all. Is that alright for you?" Sparrow asked.
"I guess I'd be less offended. Now let's go before Seymour ditches us." Fenna then left the room.
"Bye Nostradamus." Sparrow waved before she left, "I need to grab one thing before we leave."
"As long as it doesn't take long." Fenna sighed.
Sparrow shook her head, walking slightly before she opened a curtain.
"Hurry up then." She walked behind it.
Fenna followed her behind this curtain. It was a secret passage way,
"The castle's full of them." Sparrow stated, taking a brick out and grabbed two things, putting them in her bag.
Once she grabbed them, Fenna left the curtain and opened a window, proceeding to climb out. Sparrow followed Fenna, looking out the window before she climbed out after her. Fenna ran all the way to the forest and over to the big trees. Soon enough, Sparrow arrived at the forest, following Fenna's footsteps.
"Hi, I'm Alec. Pleasure to meet you." A wolf boy walked over with his hand outstretched.
"Ashton." Sparrow shook his hand with a small nod.
"See? See how easy it is to say your name?" Alec called back into the forest.
"It's not her real name." Seymour called out.
"It's a middle name, wolf boy." Sparrow shrugged.
"Come on S-" Alec was cut off by Seymour running and covering his mouth.
"First letter, we're getting somewhere." Sparrow chuckled.
"No!" Seymour crossed his arms.
"So it begins with S." Sparrow wondered, "Any other clues?"
"Tell her and I'll bite you." Seymour warned him.
"You wouldn't dare." Alec gasped.
"Oh, I would." Seymour stated.
"Last letter is R." Alec quickly told her.
"You are so dead later." Seymour let him go.
"Fenna! He's threatening me!" Alec called out to her.
"Seymour, play nice." Fenna called to him from the trees.
"Seymour." Sparrow smiled, "Pleasure to finally know your name."
Seymour crossed his arms and sat down on the floor as Fenna jumped down from the trees, landing beside him.
"I don't think he's too happy that you said his name." Sparrow looked at Fenna.
"He'll get over it." Fenna shrugged, ruffling his hair.
"If she knows mine then I think we should know her's." Seymour muttered to the others.
"Seems fair to me." Axel stated.
"But that-" Sparrow began.
"Please?" Alec asked.
After a minute of debating, Sparrow slowly nodded, "Just let me.. Do one thing."
"Do what you need, you've got them invested now." Fenna told her, leaning against a tree.
Sparrow nodded, walking off to behind a tree. After a minute, it was quiet, as if she'd left.
"Is she coming back?" Alec tilted his head.
"Maybe she ran off." Seymour suggested.
That's when a bird flew onto Seymours shoulder and tilted it's head at him.
"Can I eat it?" Seymour questioned.
The bird pecked at his ear as if to tell him off.
"No Seymour, you can't eat the bird." Fenna shook her head.
"What type of bird is it?" Alec asked.
"Sparrow." Fenna told him,"They aren't common in these forests."
The Sparrow then flew up before it landed on a branch, and in the blink of an eye, there was Sparrow.
"Does that give you a big enough hint?" Sparrow asked.
"Your name is Sparrow?" Fenna guessed.
"Correct." Sparrow nodded.
"Sparrow's the name of the bastard child." Alec realised.
"Hence, why I didn't want my name to be put out since people don't take too kind of someone being a bastard child." Sparrow sighed.
"People from the other realms don't think that way. Humans are weird." Alec shook his head.
"Tell me about it." Sparrow leant her head against the tree.
"So, which dimension are we going to first?" Seymour asked, standing up.
"Which dimension is the worst?" Sparrow asked.
"Well, it's getting worse with the Centaurs but I recommend trying with the Fairies and the Witches since we've lost contact with them." Fenna explained.
"Lead the way then." Sparrow nodded.
Fenna nodded and created one of her fire portals, jumping inside. The other three then joined in, jumping after her. When they arrived, the landscape was dull and dark. There was no sign of anyone and all the plant life was wilting.
"Where are we meant to be?" Seymour questioned.
"I have.. No clue." Alec shook his head.
"Well, this is supposed to be on Mirage Isle, home of the fairies. We've landed in what I assume to be the Echo Forest." Fenna told the group.
"You guys are basically talking in code to me." Sparrow pointed out.
"To make this as simple as possible, the fairies live on the Mirage Isles. This section, the forest, is called the Echo Forest." Seymour tried to make it sound simpler.
Sparrow nodded, understanding, "Thank you. So we need to get to the Mirage Isles?"
"No, the forest is on the Mirage Isles. We need to find the palace which is in the middle of the Echo Forest." Seymour told her.
"And have any of you guys actually been here? To know the way?" Sparrow questioned.
"I've been here before. It's very easy to get lost in there so try not to loose sight of me." Fenna warned them, walking into the forest.
"I could get some height advantage?" Sparrow asked them.
"I don't recommend it." Seymour shook his head.
"Why?" Sparrow asked.
"Well if something's wrong with the magic then there could be unstable magic around and you aren't fully in control of your water powers." Alec told her as they walked.
"I'm in full control of my bird form though." Sparrow stated.
"It's still risky, what if something shoots out at y-" Alec began but Fenna stopped him.
"Less talking, more walking." Fenna called back to them.
"You heard the woman." Seymour chuckled while the others caught up.
Alec was about to walk past Fenna but she stopped walking and pushed him backwards and to the ground.
"What was that for?" Alec groaned.
Fenna broke a stick off of a tree near her and dropped it where Alec was going to step. The ground proceeded to collapse inward and stopped at Fenna's toes.
"Nevermind, thank you." Alec nodded while Sparrow helped him get up.
"Can you all climb trees?" Fenna asked them.
The others all nodded.
"I suggest you start climbing then. Be careful though, some of the plant life here is toxic, who knows what the imbalance could have done to it." Fenna warned them, climbing up the tree closest to her.
The boys and Sparrow shared a look before they began climbing up the tree. Eventually Fenna made it to some ruins and sat in a rock waiting for the other three. About roughly five minutes, the others arrived.
"We made it. Told you we'd get here." Sparrow shrugged.
"Since when did this place get so... Rough?" Seymour asked, rubbing his hand.
"Since the unbalancement happened." Alec sighed.
"So forgive me for asking, but how do we balance it?" Sparrow asked.
"Well, that's the part that we need to figure out." Fenna answered.
"How did it become unbalanced in the first place?" Sparrow tilted her head.
"We don't know that either." Seymour told her.
Sparrow sighed, "Well, where does all the magic come from? There must be a source."
"Each realm has a relic that keeps magic in check. Maybe something's wrong with them." Alec suggested
"Where's the relic kept?" Sparrow raised a brow.
"Well the fairies have a relic called the 'Harp of Galitea'. The fairy queen, Celeste, kept it in her Enchanted Vault in the palace." Fenna explained.
"Then let's get to the vault." Sparrow nodded and jumped onto another tree.
"Agreed." Seymour nodded, jumping onto a tree with Alec.
"About the enchantments, does that mean mortal people can get through or no? Because I could fly through and get the relic." Sparrow suggested.
"I'm not sure, we don't really associate with mortals." Fenna told her.
"Then we can try it. She can be our test subject." Seymour shrugged.
"Usually I'd say no but it's our only option." Fenna sighed.
"And if she dies?" Alec asked.
"She dies." Seymour stated.
"Great. Lovely." Sparrow clasped her hands together, "I live or die."
"I mean, isn't that life anyway?" Seymour raised a brow.
"I guess." Sparrow sighed, "How will I notify you three if I get the relic?"
"Uh, throw this and we'll hear the sound." Alec tossed her a stone.
Sparrow caught the stone and put it in her satchel, "Right. I'll be back soon then."
"Have a nice trip, I guess." Seymour waved.
"Don't miss me too much." Sparrow hummed before she went on her way to the castle.
"I won't." Seymour called after her.
"Don't lie to yourself!" Sparrow called back.
"You'll miss her." Alec chuckled.
"Nope." Seymour shook his head, leaning against the tree.
"Fenna, don't you agree?" Alec asked.
"I mean, Seymour doesn't usually get attached to people quickly." Fenna shrugged.
"Eh." Alec shrugged, "He'll get used to her."
Seymour grabbed Fenna and put her between him and Alec.
"I don't want to look at him anymore." Seymour stated.
"Seymour, don't be mean~" Alec moved his head to look at him.
"Do you want to keep sitting on this branch?" Seymour asked him.
"Don't even think about it." Alec warned, knowing what he meant.
"I don't wanna be in between this!" Fenna shouted, jumping into a branch above them.
"Don't leave me alone with him!" Alec looked up at Fenna.
"You're on your own, bud." Fenna told him, watching the blur of Sparrow in the distance.
"Seymour, I do-" Alec began.
Seymour cut him off by kicking him off the branch.
"Seymour you little prick!" Alec shouted up to him as he fell down.
"This is why I'm superior." Seymour told them, placing his hands behind his head and closing his eyes.
"Shut up." Alec groaned.
**
Sparrow finally reached the Palace, getting in was easy, seeing that it was quite empty. She'd walked inside just fine before all of a sudden, a thin beam of magic shot past her.
Sparrow looked at the magic before looking at where it came from, "I mean no harm."
That's when a small ball of light flew over. As the light cleared, a fairy wearing a crown was revealed.
"Hello Miss." Sparrow looked at the fairy, "I assume you're Celeste, the fairy queen?"
"Correct you are mortal. I have been unable to find my people or control the magic around." Celeste explained.
"Unfortunately, I have not seen any around either, your majesty." Sparrow sighed, "But I may have a way to find them and sort out the magic."
"I can escort you to the relic if that would help." Celeste offered.
"You're willingly giving it up so my friends and I can restore the imbalance?" Sparrow questioned.
"There's not much else left here. As long as it's returned after the balance is restored, you may take the Harp of Galitea." Celeste told her.
"Of course. Thank you, your highness." Sparrow smiled while the walked.
Celeste floated ahead of Sparrow, leading her past areas of unstable magic until they arrived at the closed vault.
"Your majesty, how did this inbalance happen in the first place?" Sparrow asked.
"I am unsure, the witches lost contact with us first so I believe it started there." Celeste told her, placing her hands on the lock.
The lock lit up, twisted around and the door clicked open.
"Should you request that we go there next?" Sparrow asked, carefully walking inside the room.
"I would re-" Celeste then ducked as another beam flew out,"I would recommend it."
Sparrow nodded, walking over to the relic, careful of the beams. The Harp sat on a pedestal at the end of the room. It was guarded by a lot of beams, these ones seemed to be part of the defensive system. The Harp appeared to be fit for a human, not a fairy, until Sparrow remembered that fairies could change their form to appear more human sized.
"Will anything happen after I take it?" Sparrow asked Celeste who was floating outside.
"You'll have to get out as quickly as possible, the beams will try and target you after it has been removed from the pedestal." Celeste warned her.
"Understood." Sparrow nodded, she then looked at the Harp, taking a deep breath before she quickly took it and ran out the room.
Once she was out, Celeste hurried over to the door and locked it. They could hear the beams firing from inside the vault.
Sparrow let out a sigh of relief, "Thank you again, I'll return this as soon as possible."
Celeste nodded before fluttering away in an attempt to find the rest of her people. Sparrow put the Harp under her arm before she walked out of the Palace, throwing the stone so the others could hear it. A few minutes had passed when Seymour, Alec and Fenna appeared from the trees.
"Got it." Sparrow held it up.
"Right, we've got the Harp. Where to next?" Alec asked them.
"Celeste recommended that we go to the Witches realm. She believes it all started there." Sparrow answered.
"Well, what are we waiting for? Let's go." Fenna then created a portal and they all jumped through, not noticing a small fairy following them.
