Chapter 11 - Gem of Pyros

"Are you all feeling okay?" Sparrow asked while Fenna used her powers to dry everyone's clothing.

"I don't like water." Alec crossed his arms.

"The main thing is is that you survived." Seymour nudged him.

"We nearly got eaten by a rock." Alec pointed out.

"But you didn't." Fenna smirked.

"And we all survived." Amber smiled.

"Y'know, you two should really be careful here." Fenna looked to Amber and Sparrow.

"Why?" They both asked, turning to Fenna.

"Dragons aren't known for their like of things that are flammable. They like to set it on fire." Fenna explained.

"Great." Amber sighed.

"Just... Just be careful." Fenna nodded.

"We will." Sparrow assured her.

"Also, watch out for the volcanoes." Fenna warned them.

"There are volcanoes?" Amber squeaked.

Fenna nodded,"Quite a few, actually."

"And the relic we're looking for is?" Seymour chirped in.

"Gem of Pyros." Fenna stated before pointing ahead of them,"We've got a lot of climbing to do."

"And.. I'll be sitting on someone. I'm not climbing." Amber sat on Alec's shoulder.

That's when a red dragon swooped down from the sky, a silver crown on its head. It was Smoulder, leader of the Dragons. Amy looked up at Smoulder, cowardly hiding behind the others legs.

"You lot took your time, I've been waiting for ages." Smoulder informed them.

"We've been running into problems everywhere." Seymour sighed.

"Well, you're here now. Here for the relic?" Smoulder tilted his head.

"Yes, we are." Alec nodded, "Is it close?"

"It's inside the faraway volcano." Smoulder stated.

"And.. That is?" Sparrow asked.

"That one." Smoulder pointed his head at one of the volcanoes, it wasn't too far away.

"Great." Seymour nodded, "Any challenges to get up there?"

"Just a climb." Smoulder informed them,"Also, you'll need to jump inside the active volcano."

"Into the lava?" Amber stood up on Alec's shoulder.

"Yes." Smoulder nodded.

"But we could die." Amber stated.

"I won't." Fenna raised her hand.

"Everyone but Fenna." Sparrow sighed.

"I mean, why don't we just let her do it like I got the shield?" Seymour suggested.

"And what happens once Fenna is in the lava?" Alec looked at Smoulder.

"She will need to swim to the bottom and look around until she finds the necklace with the gem inside." Smoulder explained to them.

"And once she gets it, she swims back to the top and we can leave?" Alec raised a brow.

"That would be correct." Smoulder answered.

"Great." Alec nodded.

"Sure you'll be okay, Fenna?" Sparrow turned to Fenna.

"Why wouldn't I be?" Fenna asked her.

"Just making sure." Sparrow sighed.

"Well, I'm sure. Let's go." Fenna nodded.

They all nodded and began walking, getting to the bottom of the volcano.

"So, how many relics are left?" Smoulder asked them.

"If I remember correctly, two." Seymour nodded.

"That sounds good, we're nearly done." Alec sighed.

"How exactly do they restore magic? Like do they do their own thing?" Sparrow questioned.

"We still have to figure that part out." Fenna answered her.

"Is there anyone that would be able to help us?" Sparrow tilted her head.

"I recommend Aerin, he's the oldest of us Elders." Smoulder informed her.

"That's the old elf, I remember him." Sparrow nodded.

"He'll know something, he's ancient." Smoulder chuckled before stopping himself,"Don't tell him I said that."

"Oh, I'm telling him." Seymour nodded.

"But then he'll get all grumpy and day I'm being immature for my age." Smoulder whined as they began to near the top.

"What age are you, exactly?" Alec raised a brow.

"I am exactly 281." Smoulder stated.

"Why is everyone so old in the  realms?" Sparrow sighed.

"Well, keep in mind we have longer lifespans than you. What you consider old isn't actually what we do." Smoulder reminded her,"We all have children, too."

"Could a.. Mortal, per say, live as old as old as you all? With like a spell or something?" Sparrow looked at Smoulder.

"Theoretically, yes. As soon as the spell wore off they might turn to dust because they're so old, though." Smoulder shrugged.

"And how old would they become?" Sparrow kept asking.

"Depends on the spell, the last time someone tried to edit their lifespan..." Smoulder trailed off.

"What? What happened?" Sparrow gestured for him to go on.

"They were banished once Aerin found out. The one thing he despises, and he's not quick to anger, is when people meddle in the natural order and upsets the balance." Smoulder explained, stopping at the very top of the volcano.

"Noted." Sparrow nodded.

"Right, now.. Fenna jumps in it?" Amber questioned.

"Wish me luck." Fenna gave them a salute before stepping backwards, falling down into the volcano.

"Be careful!" Sparrow yelled while she was falling.

"She'll be fine." Seymour shrugged,"Now tell us more about the person banished, I'm intrigued."

"They must've turned to dust once they got banished, right?" Alec asked.

"Not exactly, it was a group of people. A family who sought immortality so they stole it from a tree that belonged to the elves." Smoulder began, smoke surrounding him and turning himself into a young-looking man.

"How did you do that?" Sparrow asked confused.

"Well, I thought it would be easier to hear about Aerin's fury if I looked more like you and less like a giant lizard." Smoulder answered.

"You still have some scales, right there." Alec pointed.

Smoulder just sighed before he continued,"Aerin chose a horrible fate for each of the family members. Even I think he went a bit far."

"What were their fates?" Seymour tilted his head.

"First was the father. Aerin locked him in an abandoned prison, wrapped in unbreakable chains for eternity." Smoulder began, leaning his arm on a rock.

"He's still alive?" Amber  gasped.

"Immortal." Smoulder nodded,"Next was the mother. He tricked her into falling forever inside an event horizon."

"How many kids did they have?" Seymour asked.

"Two, a son and daughter. The son was left frozen in time and he was put to work as a scarecrow." Smoulder informed him,"He's still in that cornfield."

"And the daughter?" Sparrow sat on a rock.

"She has been trapped in every mirror that exists. He still visits her once a year, every year. I wonder if one day he might forgive her." Smoulder sighed.

"Who wanted to live forever? Everyone? Or just the father?" Amber asked, sitting on Sparrow's shoulder.

"They all wished to live forever so Aerin ensured that they did." Smoulder finished, turning his back to them.

"Great story." Seymour nodded.

Smoulder nodded as he looked down into the volcano.

"Will she be out soon?" Alec questioned.

"We shall see soon enough." Smoulder shrugged.

**

As she swam down, Fenna tried to look around at her surroundings. However, she couldn't see much through the hot liquid. Would there be a way to melt the lava? Surely.

"How deep is this thing?" Fenna thought to herself as she still hasn't reached the bottom yet.

How long had she been there? It could be ages. She continued her way down until her feet touched something solid. Was it the bottom? It had to be. What else could it be? That's when Fenna saw something glowing from beside her. Fenna reached her hand out and was met by nothing, maybe it was further ahead of her. She needed to keep going. She needed to get the relic, then she could get out of the lava and get back to the others. Fenna swam backwards until she reached one of the walls before using her feet to push off and over to the other side. That's when Fenna bumped into something. Fenna brushed her hands against whatever it was. It was rough but it wasn't like rock. Did something actually live in here?

"Hello?" She heard a small voice from behind her.

"Um... Hi?" Fenna responded, turning around.

It was a young girl, no older than seven, "Why are you here?"

"Well, I'm looking for the Gem of Pyros. I've been sent to collect it so we can restore the magic balance." Fenna explained to her.

"The Gem?" The girl backed up slightly.

"Yes" Fenna nodded before raising a brow"Is everything alright, kid?"

"Many have came for the Gem." The girl shook her head, "None has succeeded."

"That all changes today." Fenna told her,"I'm not just fireproof, I have some skills."

"You don't understand." The girl sighed.

"Well then, help me understand. My friends and I need to save everyone." Fenna leaned against the wall.

"If you take the gem.. I disappear." The girl looked down at the necklace resting just on her chest, the pearl.

"Well, I don't want that." Fenna tilted her head,"Do you disappear... Forever?"

"I don't know.." The girl wondered, "My mother went one day. She hasn't came back."

"I've been all over, maybe I've seen her. What does she look like?" Fenna asked the girl.

"Oh, you wouldn't know her." The girl hummed, "She left one day to fight this person because they were going to harm me, I believe. Then Uncle Smoulder said something had happened to her and I've been here myself."

Fenna looked off to the side before back to the girl,"Can I tell you something? I never met my mother or father.."

"Oh..." The girl nodded.

"I just woke up in the forest. None of the mortals ever came to visit either because they were scared of 'monsters' that lived there." Fenna rolled her eyes.

"That's terrible, I'm sorry." The girls smile dropped slightly, "Did you have friends?"

"Not until I was around five or six when a Werewolf boy got stuck in a Hunter's Trap. I saved him and his father tried his best to care for me." Fenna explained,"I mostly lived in the forest but he'd visit occasionally to see me."

"How did you learn everything you do?" She tilted her head.

"The trees taught me, as well as the Council of Elders." Fenna answered her.

"The trees?.." The girl questioned.

Fenna gestured to her pointed ears,"Elf, we can hear the trees."

"What's trees?" The girl tilted her head.

Fenna took a moment to think, realising that this girl lives in a volcano,"They're big, tall and full of wisdom."

"They sound cool!" The girl smiled.

"They are." Fenna nodded before looking back up, knowing her friends were waiting on her.

The girl looked at Fenna for a second before she took off the necklace, holding it out.

Fenna was hesitant though,"But I don't want you to disappear, I don't even know your name."

"My name is Atka." Atka waved the necklace, "And who knows? Maybe I can see my mom."

Fenna lowered her head as she took the necklace out of Atka's small hands.

"Thank you for coming to visit me." Atka smiled before she disappeared.

Fenna just stood and stared at where the small girl once stood. That's when she had a thought. Was she doing the right thing? The necklace slowly began to glow and what once was a clear crystal, was now a small image of the Atka. Fenna tilted her head at her before smiling and started to swim back up to the surface.

**

"How long has she been in there now?" Seymour tapped his foot.

"A while but it's quite deep, maybe she hasn't found it yet." Smoulder suggested.

"What if she's not okay?" Alec chimed in.

"You dare suggest such a thing?" Fenna asked, popping her head up over the edge of the rock.

"Nevermind, she's alive." Alec clapped.

"You thought I would die?" Fenna questioned, pulling herself out.

"Maybe.." Alec muttered.

Fenna just signed before walking over to Seymour and resting her head on his shoulder.

"You okay?" Seymour rubbed her back.

"I really questioned it down there, if I was doing the right thing." Fenna told him.

"What do you mean?" Seymour tilted his head, looking at her slightly.

"This. Everything that we've been doing. What if it doesn't even work?" Fenna stepped back from Seymour and turned to Smoulder,"You knew her, you knew she was there."

"Knew who?" Sparrow raised a brow.

"Atka. The girl in the volcano." Fenna crossed her arms and raised the necklace,"Why didn't you tell me that she'd have to disappear for me to get this?"

"I wanted her to be with her mother." Smoulder sighed.

"Is she dead?" Fenna asked quietly but Smoulder turned around,"Smoulder, is she dead?!"

"Yes! Her mother was a great warrior but... When we were at war, her child, Atka, died in an accident so I asked the gods to make her into a spirt to look after the Gem." Smoulder explained.

Fenna was silent, she just walked back towards Seymour and rested her head on his shoulder again.

"So you purposely let us kill a child?" Sparrow turned to Smoulder.

"Well, yes. She's free now." Smoulder told her.

"But you let us kill a child." Sparrow shook her head, "Why didn't you notify us of her?"

"I know Fenna, she would've been too hesitant." Smoulder informed them as Fenna began walking down the path.

Sparrow shook her head, "She was still a child."

She quickly followed after Fenna. Fenna stopped by at a small ledge and sat down, not turning to face Sparrow.

"Fenna." Sparrow sighed and  sat beside her, "What happened in the volcano wasn't your fault. You didn't know about Atka."

"Look, I don't want to talk about it anymore. I'll come back when I'm ready." Fenna refused to look at her.

Sparrow looked at her lap, "I know how you feel, something similar happened when I was younger. I know the sorrow you feel, but once we get magic restored? We can get her back."

Fenna just looked off at the mountains in the distance,"You go join the others, I just need a minute."

"Are you sure?" Sparrow put a hand on her shoulder.

"I'll be fi-" Fenna began before stopping,"You need to go! Now!"

"What?" Sparrow raised a brow.

"They're here!" Fenna got up and began pulling Sparrow with her.

"We need to get back to the others, then get out of here." Sparrow quickly walked with Fenna.

"Why do you think I'm running?" Fenna questioned as they heard footsteps from behind.

Sparrow looked behind them before she looked forward and caught up with Fenna, "They're catching up."

"Why are you running?" Seymour asked as they ran up the path.

"They're coming, Natasha and Amala." Sparrow told him.

"Well, that ain't good." Seymour muttered as Amy created a portal for them.

"They're not gonna get us, right?" Amber looked up at the others.

"Correct, they won't get you." Fenna answered before turning and speaking some elvish orders to Seymour.

"What?" Amber raised a brow.

"They want me dead and they can have me. As long as you all get away." Fenna told her.

"Fenna, I'm not going to let that happen." Sparrow walked towards her.

"If it's my life for the world, I'll accept it. Now Seymour, do as I've told you." Fenna looked at him as her wrist was grabbed.

"Found you~" Amala teased.

"Aw, I missed you so much." Fenna turned around and hugged her, taking Amala by surprise.

"What are you doing?" Amala panicked.

"Giving you a hug, it's custom to do this to people you despise." Fenna smiled at her.

"No it's not. You kill them!" Amala pushed Fenna to the ground.

"Come on, you know you don't really hate me. You're just jealous." Fenna winked as Seymour left with Allister.

"Jealous of what? An orphaned elf?" Amala laughed.

"Jealous of my power. Jealous that, despite not having a biological family, more people love me than you." Fenna began listing off things.

"Like who? Your little friends? They're only friends with you because you have nobody." Amala scoffed.

"I have the council, I have my friends. The real question is, who do you have? Mumsy in the dungeon? Your kingdom that hates you?" Fenna stood up as Alec and Amber left.

But Fenna never seen Sparrow go through. In fact, she didn't see Sparrow at all.

"I don't need anyone." Amala rolled her eyes, "I only need myself."

"We're not so different, you just need to open your eyes." Fenna walked towards Amala and whispered a few things into her ear.

"Of course they wanted me, look at me." Amala pushed Fenna back.

"We all know what your mother was like, it isn't really a secret." Fenna shrugged,"She took you in because she needed an heir, not because she loved you."

"At least I know my mother." Amala spat.

"Least I have a dad, two actually." Fenna winked at Amala.

"One of which you don't know who it is. The other only took you in because you were friends with his son." Amala scoffed.

"Hey, you got about Aerin. He was also a father figure. Just because he nearly murdered you, doesn't mean you ignore him." Fenna crossed her arms.

"I'll ignore whoever I want, including Aerin." Amala copied her, crossing her arms.

"Yada, yada. Can we just get her?" Natasha groaned while she walked up.

"Nobody asked for your opinion, chess piece." Fenna grabbed her wrist as she approached, slowly warming her hand.

"Get off me freak!" Natasha yelped and jumped back.

"Aw, I was hoping I'd get to remove that hand." Fenna sighed, a smirk on her face.

"Alright, there's one. Where's my sister?" Natasha rubbed her wrist.

"If she followed my orders, she wouldn't be here. Then again, I don't think she understands Elvish." Fenna shrugged.

"So she is here?" Natasha raised a brow.

"Probably, I don't know why you're asking." Fenna yawned, creating small flames from her fingertips.

"Because she's coming with us." Natasha crossed her arms.

"Can we just get this over with? I'm very bored with you two." Fenna asked them.

"Great." Amala put the cuff that restricts magic on Fenna's wrist before she grabbed her, snapping her fingers and they all disappeared.
