Chapter 1 - The Ambush

The bastards child. Sparrow. The one that everyone.. Liked. But then again, disliked. She was the daughter of King Henry and his mistress. It wasn't her fault she was there. She was strolling through the castle halls when she looked outside, it was rather nice outside so she thought she could go for a walk. But, she had to ask. Sparrow then walked through to the throne room to where her father and Catherine, the Queen were sitting on their thrones.

"Father?" She asked while she walked in.

Henry turned away from his wife and looked down at his daughter,"Yes dear?"

"I was thinking that I could go on a walk for a short while.  It is a lovely day." Sparrow put her hands behind her back.

"I don't see any reason not to. Just be careful near the forest, there's a bandit camp near there." Henry warned her.

Sparrow nodded, "Of course not."

"Wouldn't it be better if you took a guard with you? Surely you'd feel safer." Catherine butted in.

"Not at all, Catherine. I feel rather safe on my own. Besides, I'm careful." Sparrow answered.

Catherine lightly shook her head, she'd never really liked Sparrow. Nobody really likes getting cheated on twice and having to care for two children that aren't her's as well as her own daughter.

"Have a nice walk dear." Henry smiled at her.

"Of course." Sparrow nodded before she left the throne room and left outside, into the forest.

She had been walking for a while and nothing had happened. Maybe her father was just being paranoid and the bandits had left already. That's when an arrow flew past her head.

"Okay.. Maybe not paranoid." Sparrow muttered, turning to where the arrow came from.

She saw a girl standing on a high up branch. She seemed relatively well dressed for a bandit. That's when a group of rugged men began popping out from all around her.

"Oh, hello." Sparrow began looking around at all the men, backing up slightly.

It's not that she was scared, she just didn't know what these men fully wanted.

"Right princess, hand over your valuables and no one gets hurt." One man ordered gruffly.

"No one gets hurt?" Sparrow raised a brow, "Sir, you must be mistaken. Everyone gets hurt in this forest, including bandits."

"Just give me your things or she gets it." The bandit muttered, pointing at the girl who was sitting absentmindedly in the tree.

Sparrow looked at the girl before back at the bandit, "Of course, how silly of me."

She took a necklace out of her pocket and held it out to the bandit. Sparrow saw the girl in the tree, she seemed to know what was happening but let it play out as the bandit reached for the necklace.

"But today is not the day my things will be taken." Sparrow added before she lifted her dress up slightly and tripped the bandit up quickly.

The rest of the bandits then started charging forward, aside from tree girl, who just watched. Soon enough, the princess began fighting the men. But only after a few minutes, the men were all on the ground. Sparrow wiped her dress before she clapped her hands.

"Well, tree girl. Enjoy the show?" She asked, catching her breath.

The girl shrugged as she jumped down and walked over. She was taller than Sparrow and was clearly enjoying it.

"So, who are you supposed to be?" Tree girl questioned her.

"Who are you supposed to be?" Sparrow asked the same question.

"I asked first." The girl stated, placing her hands behind her head.

Sparrow tilted her head, "Ashton. Now you?"

"I call myself Fenna, that's what it said on the can." Fenna told her.

"The can?" Sparrow raised a brow.

"My can." Fenna nodded.

"May I ask, what you mean by can?" Sparrow asked.

Fenna rolled her eyes as she removed a strange object from her pocket. It had the word 'Fenna' on it.

"This is your can?" Sparrow looked at it.

"You asked to see it so I showed you." Fenna returned it to her pocket.

"Peculiar. Are these your family?" She gestured to the men still laying on the ground.

Fenna shook her head,"Definitely not, I found them in my forest and they wanted me to join their team. Only after I... Depleted... A few of them."

Sparrow nodded slowly, "Have they ever hurt you?"

Why would she care? She's a princess.

"You think they could touch me?" Fenna raised a brow.

"Well, no. You seem pretty tough yourself." Sparrow shrugged, "It's just a simple question. Men are unpredictable at times."

"They aren't unpredictable, just untrustworthy. You can't trust anyone else to do anything right."Fenna winked at Sparrow.

Sparrow merely blinked and Fenna was gone and so was her necklace. How did she do it? Sparrow crossed her arms with a small smile, surprised at Fenna.

"Have fun with the necklace!" She called out to her before she walked back down the trail.

The sun was slowly lowering as Sparrow ended up at the castle again.

"That took longer than expected." Sparrow muttered to herself while she walked into the castle.

"What time do you call this?" Catherine asked her, standing in a doorway.

"I'd say I'd call it dusk, Catherine." Sparrow sighed.

"You really shouldn't stay out this late. You know what men are like." Catherine then walked off.

Sparrow rolled her eyes before she walked inside and went to her chambers.

**

It was the next day and Sparrow made her way back to the forest to meet Fenna. If she was there, that is.  The forest was a rather big place but she had in interest in Fenna. Fenna was unusual almost. Sparrow couldn't put her finger on what was strange though. That's when she heard a voice.

"If you keep walking, you'll fall down the ravene in about three steps." It was Fenna.

Sparrow stopped with just one foot to go, "Thank you for the warning."

She turned to find Fenna. She met Fenna's eyes, she was hanging upside down in a tree.

"You royals must not explore much, do you?" Fenna asked.

Sparrow crossed her arms, "I explore quite a bit, actually. Just not this side of the forest."

"I mean, it isn't your fault that you weren't born in a forest." Fenna shrugged, letting go of the branch and landing on her feet.

"So you were really born in the forest?" Sparrow walked closer to her.

"I was, in fact, ask me any question about the forest and I'll give you an appropriate answer." Fenna leaned against the tree.

"How old.. Is this tree?" Sparrow asked slowly, unsure on what to ask.

"The one behind me?" Fenna tilted her head before studying the tree,"Fifty years on this one."

"When did the leaves last change?" Sparrow asked again.

"Three months ago if I got my dates right." Fenna replied.

"Did your parents teach you all that?" Sparrow asked.

Fenna tilted her head,"What are parents?"

"I'm sorry?" Sparrow uncrossed her arms.

"What are parents?" Fenna asked again.

"Parents are the people who love you, who take care of you." Sparrow spoke slowly.

"So, I'm my parents?" Fenna questioned, highly confused by the term.

"No, you're parents are your mother and father." Sparrow corrected her.

"But what are those?" Fenna looked at Sparrow, more confused than before.

Sparrow's face softened, "Fenna, who did you grow up with?"

"Myself." Fenna stated.

Sparrow nodded slowly, "Did you have anyone by your side? Who taught you how to walk? How to talk?"

"The trees." Fenna pointed around,"They listen to everything y'know."

"Fenna, the tree's can't take a human form." Sparrow stated.

"I know that." Fenna rolled her eyes,"That doesn't mean they can't listen."

"Can they talk?" Sparrow asked.

"How do you think I learned?" Fenna answered.

"Can it talk right now?" Sparrow walked over to a tree, tilting her head.

Fenna looked at the tree beside her and stood there for a few minutes before looking at him, seeming almost insulted.

"Gerald, stop making me look bad and say something actually nice about her." Fenna told the tree.

"I'm.. Not hearing anything." Sparrow shook her head.

"You don't have the ears for it." Fenna shrugged before moving her hair off her ears to reveal her pointed ones.

Sparrow looked at Fenna's ears, walking up to her slightly, "So.. You're an elf?"

"Yeah, I can also do this cool thing with my hands. Wanna see?" Fenna asked her.

Sparrow tilted her head slightly before nodding. Fenna smirked as she held up one finger. All of a sudden a small flame appeared on the tip. One by one she raised up her fingers and the same thing happened. She then balled her fists before clasping her hands together. Once she opened her hands, a small ball of fire sat there.

Sparrow smiled softly, "You have powers? Fire powers at that."

Fenna nodded before closing her hands on the fire ball, causing it it vanish.

"So you're an elf with fire powers?" Sparrow put together the pieces.

"Correcto." Fenna nodded again.

"You keep getting even more unusual." Sparrow nodded.

Fenna smiled before hitting the tree beside her,"Gerald, shut up!"

"What did the tree say?" Sparrow looked at the tree.

"You don't want to know." Fenna shook her head.

"I'm curious." Sparrow crossed her arms.

"You really don't. Gerald is very... Dirty minded for a plank of wood." Erica leaned against the tree.

"Then I truly want to know what he said." Sparrow nodded.

"Be my guest and try because I'm not repeating that." Fenna sat down, using her arms as a pillow.

"I'm watching you Gerald." Sparrow pointed at the tree.

That's when an apple fell from the tree, narrowly missing Sparrow's head. Sparrow picked up the apple and glared at the tree before she handed it to Fenna, sitting down next to her.

"Gerald, you can't just throw things at people." Fenna told him, taking a bite out of the apple.

"I believe that Gerald disagrees." Sparrow shrugged.

"I can see that." Fenna stated, continuing to eat her apple.

"So you've been out here your whole life?" Sparrow questioned.

"Mhm." Fenna nodded.

"How old exactly, are you?" Sparrow looked at her.

"Uh, give me a moment." Fenna began counting on her fingers,"Twenty by the last count."

"You're only slightly older than myself." Sparrow smiled softly.

"That's nice." Fenna stated, sticking out her legs straight.

"If you grew up in the forest, how do you know your age?" Sparrow tilted her head, "Did the tree's tell you or something?"

"That is exactly how it happened." Fenna nodded.

"And you know nothing of your family?" Sparrow added.

"I don't even know what that word means so no." Fenna shook her head.

"Fenna. May I ask another thing?" Sparrow asked.

"Sure thing." Fenna stated.

"How did.. You learn your power?" Sparrow questioned.

Fenna thought for a moment but shrugged,"It just kinda happened when I was around eight. I'd always realised that I never really got cold but that day I ended up setting something on fire."

"That's how my situation played out." Sparrow nodded, "One day I was by the st-"

She stopped herself. She was warned not to tell people of her 'curse'.

"You're magic too? Cool." Fenna gasped, she'd never met someone else with powers.

"What? Magic? Pfft! No." Sparrow shook her head.

Fenna looked at her,"You humans really aren't good at this lying stuff."

"I'm actually an alright liar when I've figured out a person." Sparrow sighed.

"So you admit that you're lying to me?" Fenna raised a brow.

"Well..I'm not meant to tell, others of what I have." Sparrow admitted.

"So? Does it look like I know anybody else that I could freely contact?" Fenna asked her.

"I guess not." Sparrow shook her head before standing up, brushing her dress and held out her hand for Fenna.

Fenna took Sparrow's hand and stood up,"Show me what you've got Ashton."

"Alright. Although, it's rather simular to yourself really." She began walking over to the raveen.

"Don't fall, it's always a bit slippery near the edges." Fenna warned her.

Sparrow nodded, taking her warning and stayed clear of the edges, "Ready?"

"I'm ready." Fenna nodded.

Sparrow took a deep breath before she outstretched her hands to the water in the raveen. The water slowly began rising up, when she moved her hand, the water began to spin. She then started to make small fish made of water jump in and out of the water. After a minute, she stopped, turning to look at Fenna.

Fenna looked impressed,"I might have to take you to the Council."

"The Council?" Sparrow asked.

"It's this group of creatures with powers. You haven't heard off them because they're from another dimension." Fenna explained.

"Another dimension? And how.. do you get there?" Sparrow questioned.

"Magic, duh." Fenna rolled her eyes.

Sparrow nodded slowly, "Another question. What did you do with my necklace? Sell it?"

"Why? Was it valuable?" Fenna tilted her head.

"Yes." Sparrow answered honestly, "But I didn't really mind you taking it. I just wanted to know what you did with it."

"I have it right here, you want it back?" Fenna asked, taking the necklace out of her pocket.

"Keep it." She shrugged before she got an idea, "Have you ever been shopping?"

"What's that?" Fenna asked.

"I'll take that answer as a no." Sparrow nodded, "Come on. We're going to the village."

Fenna looked at her as if she was incredibly suspicious before covering her ears with her hair and walking with her to the edge of the forest.

"We should be able to get.. maybe eighty gold for this?" Sparrow did a rough guess, "What are you needing? Food? Clothes?"

"I don't need anything, the forest provides for me and I protect it." Fenna shrugged.

"Well, forget about the forest for a tiny bit." Sparrow told her, "If the forest didn't provide you, what would you need?"

"I don't need anything, I don't get it." Fenna crossed her arm as a bluebird landed of her shoulder.

"Does the bluebird talk?" Sparrow asked, tilting her head at the bluebird.

"Everything talks in the forest, humans just can't hear it." Fenna stated, gently patting the bird.

"What are they saying?" Sparrow asked her.

"This bird is confused about what I am doing. As am I." Fenna told her.

"Have you ever actually been out of the forest?" Sparrow crossed her arms.

Fenna shook her head,"The forest is safe. Then again, I technically leave when I see the Council."

"Tell Charlie that you'll be safe with me. We'll be back soon." Sparrow stated.

How did she know the bluebirds name?

"I'll be back soon. If not, tell Gerald he's a little git." Fenna told the bird as it flew off.

"Alright. So since you don't need anything, at least let me give you some gold. It will make me feel better about your situation." Sparrow sighed.

Fenna shrugged and held out her hand. Sparrow looked at Fenna's hand before she took it.

Fenna raised a brow,"Uh, sorry about this but I thought you said you were going to give me gold?"

"Well we need to go into the village to get it. Sell the necklace for the gold." Sparrow shrugged, "I don't carry gold with me incase situations like yesterday happens."

Fenna nodded before letting go of Sparrow's hand and walking into the light of the village.

"Do you know where we're going?" Sparrow asked, walking along beside her.

"I've never been here in my life, I have no clue where I'm going." Fenna answered her.

"Well for one, you're going left towards the bakers. We need to go to the jewelers." Sparrow held Fenna's shoulder and lead her in the right direction.

"I don't know what any of this is." Fenna shook her head, looking around.

"Bakers, is where you get bread and warm goods. Like.. cookies." Sparrow nodded.

Fenna nodded along, not even knowing what a cookie was.

Sparrow gasped, "You've never had a cookie?"

Fenna facepalmed,"I've been living in a forest for twenty years and I only eat what's in there. Does it look like I have?"

"Change of route, to the bakery!" Sparrow turned and walked towards the bakery.

Fenna sighed,"Fine then."

"Trust me. You'll love it." Sparrow assured her while they walked to the bakery.

Sparrow walked inside with Fenna who looked around in confusion.

"This is called a bakery, it's where they make warm things that you can eat." Sparrow informed Fenna while she went up to the counter.

Fenna still looked around confused as Sparrow began talking to the cashier. Once talking and got her cookies, she nodded and walked back over to Fenna, she then handed her the cookie. Fenna looked as it as they walked outside.

"Now, you eat it and enjoy." Sparrow hummed before she took a bite of her own cookie.

After around five minutes Fenna took a small bite.

"So?" Sparrow asked, wanting to see if she'd like it.

"Eh, I don't see the appeal." Fenna stated.

"Oh c'mon. It's lovely." Sparrow sighed.

"You say lovely, I say mediocre." Fenna shrugged.

"Well, what food do you like?" Spareow asked.

"I like berries, they taste nice." Fenna told her.

"Any specific berry?" Sparrow questioned.

"I just eat them all, except the poisonous ones." Fenna informed her,"I use those for my arrows."

"Remind me never to get on your bad side." Sparrow nodded, "We can get berries after we get more money."

"I can find them in the forest, I don't need the ones from here." Fenna told her.

"Can you stop being difficult?" She groaned while she finished her cookie.

"I'm not difficult, I'm just simple." Fenna shrugged.

"Then we can get your gold now. May I have my necklace?" Sparrow held out her hand.

"Here you go." Fenna handed it to her.

"Thank you." Sparrow took it and walked to the jewelers.

Fenna waited outside for Sparrow while she went inside the the jewelers. After a few minutes, Sparrow came back out with a pouch, handing it to Fenna.

"Thanks." Fenna took it,"Have a nice day, I have a Council to see."

"May we meet again tomorrow?" Sparrow asked.

"I don't see why not." Fenna nodded before running back into forest.
