The Double Date/ Dublin
"Jimmy. It's time to get up." I tapped my husband's shoulder, having been married for a week.
"Mmph." He groaned, rolling to his other side.
I kissed him on the cheek and his eyes drifted open.
" Good morning beautiful. " He hugged me and pulled me down. He snuggled up to me.
I kissed his nose. " Remember what you promised to do today for me?"
" No, refresh my memory Bloddie. " Jimmy said and tousled my bed head.
" Well. First you said you'd help me with planting and going to the market and then we'd go to dinner with Samuel and Katherine. " I tilted my head to kiss his forehead.
" Oh, Bloddie do we have to? Can't we just stay here? " He stroked my cheek with the back of his hand.
" No, we promised, Jimmy it will be fun I swear to you." I put my arm around his waist.
I left the bed and waited for his answer. Not two seconds later, he agreed.
" Yes. Oh thank you. Now get up, we have to bake some biscuits. " I pecked him lightly on the cheek and went to get dressed.
Ten minutes later Jimmy was dressed and ready to start baking. I had bought him some nice working clothes, in addition to the clothes he already owned. The bakery was doing good, but we decided to start running the farm. Luckily, Aunt Ailbe needed something to keep her busy now, with Danny and I gone. She ran the bakery and helped us with the money. Jimmy promised last night that we'd start planting today.
" Jimmy are you ready?" I called from the kitchen, slicing bread for his breakfast.
" Yes. " I felt a hand wrapped around my waist and kissed my shoulder.
" Here's your breakfast." I buttered the bread and headed out the door. " Hurry up. We're walking. We have to get there early."
Before I knew it, he was finished breakfast and was walking beside me. We reached the market and the vendors were just beginning to set up.
" Blodwen, I don't know a single thing about farming." Jimmy whispered.
" Just trust me." I squeezed his hand and led him to the stands. We got potatoes, corn, carrots. Of course we had the apple orchard. At this point I had to send Jimmy back to get the wheelbarrow. He didn't seem to mind but that's how he is.
"Let's go Jimmy. " We walked back to the farm, but I saw a family by the side of the road, surrounded by chicks, chickens, two cows, and a horse?! "Hold on Jimmy." I went over to the family.
"Hello." I waved.
" Hello." The woman I assumed to be the mother greeted.
" Why are all of these animals here?" I asked and gestured to the group of animals.
" Well. You see, my husband got a job in America. You see. We can't take them with. " The mother continued, "No one will buy them, there is no farmers out to buy them." She started to tear up.
I smiled. " Aye, I understand. But, Miss, I am a farmer, with my husband here. I pointed to Jimmy and he smiled.
I felt a tugging at my skirt. "Will you take care of 'em, Miss?" A small child asked.
" Of course. I grew up on a farm just like you." I said.
" Oh thank you. I'd hate to see them with some businessman." They led the animals to the farm and left as Jimmy walked through the the gate.
" Bloddy? Why are there animals here?" He pointed at the chicks and others.
"Come on Jimmy. I couldn't leave them." I pouted.
" Bloddie, dear, are you sure we can take care of all these animals?" He sighed.
" Jimmy, you keep forgetting I grew up on this farm." He sighed again and I kissed him.
"I love you."
"I love you too."
We put all the animals into their pens, coops, houses, etc... and planted each and every seed. Before we knew it, it was 3:00 in the afternoon.
Though we were tired, Jimmy kept his promise. We cleaned up and dressed in our best.
We arrived at a nice restaurant and sat at the table, Samuel and Katherine showed up a few minutes later.
" James. " Katherine nodded. " Belle."
I opened my mouth but Samuel interrupted for me, "Dear, I believe it's Blodwen." He kissed the back of my hand.
" Hello Samuel." I slightly blushed, not knowing why.
Jimmy got a bit defensive and took Samuel's hand to shake.
" Shall we sit?" Samuel asked.
We all nodded in agreement. Samuel pulled out the chair for me. I saw Jimmy start to get red as he looked over at Samuel.
" So Samuel, what do you do for a living?" Jimmy clenched his fists.
" I'm a lawyer." I saw Jimmy mutter something like of course and kicked him under the table.
"What do you do, James?" Samuel smirked.
" Well I was a footman, but I quit to pursue farming with Blodwen. I work odd jobs here and there too." He looked over and smiled at me.
" Not a lot of money in that." Katherine scoffed.
" Now listen here I..." I took his hand and held it in mine, which seemed to calm him down.
"It was very sweet, Jimmy knows how I used to live on a farm when I was growing up.
" I see, and that is how you met Thomas?" Katherine interjected, again.
" Yes." Jimmy answered.
" Does he seem odd to you?" She aaked.
" No not odd at all." He looked at me and I squeezed his hand.
" So Blodwen, what about you, we've barely heard that beautiful voice of yours?" Samuel grinned as food came to our table.
I blushed, "Well I am farming too, I love it, it keeps me busy." He smiled at me, and leaned his chin on his hands. " If you'd like you could stop over to see the farm."
"That would be lovely. " He nodded.
Jimmy acted as though he glanced at his watch. " Oh we have to leave. Thank you so much, this was...interesting. " He paid our part of the bill and pulled me out of there.
When we were outside I broke free of his hand. " Jimmy, what the bloody hell was that?"
"Bloddie, did you not see how that mongrel was eyeing you up?" He took my hand again in his and I could see his face redden.
" Oh now Jimmy, you are overreacting. " I kissed his cheek.
" No, Bloddie, I don't have a good feeling about them." He explained.
" You have to try, for Thomas' sake." He sighed and nodded.
The next few days went on perfectly, the animals were happy and so were we. It was surprising, considering everything we had been through. One morning that changed.
I had begun to have stomach pains frequently but of course I didn't want to bother Jimmy. That morning while I was making breakfast, a large jab went to my stomach, making me cry out in pain.
Jimmy ran over to my side. "Bloddy are you okay?!"
"I'm fine." I cringed.
" That's it. We're going to the doctor." He gripped my waist and pulled me along to the doctor, eventually, I was able to stand up straight to walk. We made it to the clinic just as it opened.
" What seems to be the problem, Mrs. Kent?" Doctor Pond asked.
" I've been having frequent stomach problems, Doctor. " I grabbed my stomach and Jimmy took my hand.
The doctor did a few tests and called us back in.
" What's wrong doctor?" I whispered, expecting the worst.
"Nothing's wrong dear, you're pregnant! " The doctor exclaimed.
