Suspicion

Jimmy POV

Who knew Daniel was one of his kind? Those were the thoughts running through his mind.

Maybe he misread the situation. I mean there are plenty of things that it could've been. Right? Did Blodwen know about her brother's sickness? Poor Blodwen, I better write her. He picked up a pen and wrote a letter.

Dearest Blodwen,
How are you my darling? I hope you're well.
I'm writing to tell you about your brother's ailment. You see the poor chap is attracted to other men. Disgraceful I know. I just wanted to inform you of this unfortunate occurrence. I love you.
All my love,
Jimmy.

"What are you writing so early Jimmy?" Daniel asked from behind him.

He quickly folded the letter to see him looking over my shoulder, hair obviously ruffled. "Oh this is just a letter to...my ex employer. It's just asking for a reference...in case I need to apply for another job."

"Oh alright I understand..." Daniel said, suspicious.

"I should go post it now...goodbye." I hurried away from Daniel.

Daniel POV

Well that was peculiar,  Daniel thought to himself.

"I have a weird feeling about him. I should go talk to Thomas." He thought.

" Thomas do you have a minute?" Daniel asked.

"Not right now Daniel. I'm busy." He answered, carrying a pot of tea.

"Okay." He muttered.

He walked around and found Ms. Baxter sitting at the table. It seemed that, for once, he wasn't the only one unoccupied during the day. " Hello Ms. Baxter."

"Hello Daniel." She always seemed like a kind woman.

"May I ask you a question?" He sat down.

"How can I help? "

"Has Jimmy ever acted suspicious?"

"I haven't been here for very long, but yes he usually does. Why?"

"Well, he was writing a letter and when I asked him about it, he struggled to answer the question."

"Did he happen to say to whom it's written to?"

"His old employer, I think."

"Oh Lady Anstruther. They have quite a history. "

"What do you mean by history?"

"Oh its not really my place to say."

"Please it's important."

"Okay. Well I know she sends him a valentine every year."

"Are they still, seeing each other?"

"I couldn't say. I really don't know much beyond that."

"Thank you Baxter."

(Later that evening, after dinner, outside)

Thomas POV

"I don't understand Daniel, your sister is with Jimmy?" Thomas questioned.

"Yes, and I was starting to accept it, but now I'm not sure." Daniel paced.

Thomas pulled out a cigarette. "Go on."

"Thomas we talked about this." Daniel stuck his palm out.

"Do I have to?" Thomas whined like the children in the nursery.

"They'll kill you. "Daniel said as Thomas conceded, stuffing the cigarette.

"So your sister and Jimmy are together so what happened?" Thomas put the cigarettes back in his pocket.

"I saw Thomas writing a letter today to his old employer, Lady Anstruther. Should I be worried?" Daniel looked sadly up at the 2 inch taller Thomas.

Thomas knew about the relationship that Lady Anstruther and Jimmy have/had, but of course he didn't want to worry Daniel. "No. I'm sure it's nothing."

"Thank you Thomas. You always reassure me." Daniel patted Thomas on the shoulder, not wanting to be seen.

I sure hope it's nothing.

Blodwen POV

The bell to the bakery rang. "Coming!"

"Letter for a Miss Blodwen O'Connor? " The post man asked.

" Oh hello, Edward. I haven't seen you for a while." She smiled at the tall, blonde  man.

"Oh Blodwen. You get prettier every time I see you." He kissed her hand.

"Um the mail, Edward." She interrupted as he began to kiss up her arm.

"Yes, right here." He sheepishly pulled out the envelope.

"Thank you." She took the envelope from his hands.

"Mmm. What's that smell? You must be baking something real nice." He sniffed the air.

"Cleaning products. I'm washing the kitchen appliances. " Blodwen answered.

"Remember when we used to bake cookies together years ago?" He reached for her hands.

"Where'd that spout from?" Blodwen laughed.

"I'm just saying I really missed you Bloddie. Would you go to the theatre with me this Friday?"He asked.

"Uh. Sorry I'm going with my brother to the theatre on Friday." She replied.

"He can tag along." He responded.

"...and my boyfriend." She finished.

"Oh." He rubbed the bridge of his nose.

"Sorry, but while you're here could you help me with some cleaning? I can't reach the cabinet tops." She asked.

"Sure." He politely agreed, walking to the kitchen while Blodwen read Jimmy’s letter. She began reading with a smile but as she continued her face grew sour, even angry. "You know what, Edward? Maybe I am free Friday night."

Jimmy POV

It's been two days since he'd sent the letter and he hadn't gotten any response, that is, until he received an envelope Thursday morning.

It was from Blodwen,  but he was disappointed to find it was only one sentence long.

Dear Jimmy,
Meet me at the bakery.
Blodwen.

"Well that's just fantastic Daisy! The family wants to go for a picnic and you didn't make the bread!" Mrs. Patmore shouted.

"I can't make it now! It's not enough time! Plus the oven is filled with the cake for tonight!" Daisy cried out.

"Figure it out then! That's your job!" She shouted back.

Perfect.

"Daisy I can pick up some bread from the bakery for you." He whispered.

"Oh thank you. Just be back by 12 o'clock!"
She squeaked out.

He walked there on foot, knowing he could actually get some bread there as well.

The scent of Sourdough loafs filled his nostrils when Jimmy walked into the bakery.

" Blodwen it's me!" Jimmy yelled.

"Hi there. Do you mean to tell me what you meant by my brother havin' a sickness?" Her Irish accent enhanced by her anger.

"Bloddie calm down." He soothed.

" NO I WILL NOT BLOODY CAALM DOWN! HOW DARE YOU SAY MY BROTHER HAS A SICKNESS?!" She screamed.

"But Bloddie. He likes other men, that's not natural." Jimmy "explained".

"Oi what's not natural about loving someone else?" She asked.

"It makes me uncomfortable." Jimmy stroked her curly hair.

She smacked his hand."What has he had a go at ya?"

"No...it's just..." He stuttered.

"Then what's the BLOODY problem?" Blodwen shouted.

"Well men are supposed to love women, like I love you Bloddie. " Jimmy said.

"Don't you give me any of that bible talk. I believe in the Lord too but I don't believe you should hate someone because of who they love. Honestly Jimmy. If this is how you feel, then I don't know if we can see each other anymore." Jimmy looked like he'd been shot with a dart in the chest.

"I don't know if I could live with that." He laid a hand on her shoulder.

"Then there's nothing left to say."

"Bloddie. I."Bloddie seemed about to cry.

" Just leave Jimmy. Just go." Jimmy looked deep into Blodwen's eyes.

"I love you, Blodwen and this shouldn't come between us."Jimmy took another step to Blodwen.

"No. How can I look at you without seeing the hatred that you feel for my brother? Answer that Jimmy." She screamed.

"I..." He couldn't find the words to calm her down.

" Please leave Jimmy. Don't make this harder than it has to be." She whispered sadly.

"I just want you to know that I lo..."

"Stop. Please.Don't say anything." He was almost out the door when she whispered. "The feeling is mutual."

Instead of the loaf of bread he came there for, he left the bakery with a broken heart.
