Chapter 16
Devon's POV-
I found myself on the couch studying. Yesterday was a lazy day for the most part, after breakfast with the Donitelli's. We had spent the day mostly in bed or on the couch, vegging, watching a bit of TV and cuddling. I didn't do any studying but then again, I didn't have the urge nor the impending need to do so. I felt like I knew what I needed to for my exams which started first thing, tomorrow morning. With only four classes this semester, my worries were more on Chemistry and Biology and since I tutored in Biology, you guessed it, I was pretty darned set.
“Chemistry, again?” Shane came over to me, sitting beside me with two platefuls of sandwiches. I nodded as he handed me the plate.
“You didn't have to do this.” I gestured to the sandwich and then took a bite. He began eating his along with me.
“You looked like you were hellbent on getting through your written material when you woke up this morning. I figured I'd let you do your work so you can enjoy dinner tonight and we'll see where the rest of the night takes us.” He tells me and smiles sexily.
“You're incorrigible.” I tell him, laughing into my sandwich.
“I thought you liked that about me.” He tells me with a mock evil laugh. I couldn't help but giggle.
“You do have a point.” I say.
Shane had been in the kitchen, working for the last hour on some kind of dish for dinner. I put my Chemistry work down on the coffee table and got up to sit at the breakfast bar. He looked up and smiled at me as I saw him start a sauce for our meal.
“This is for you.” He hands me a small piece of a baguette with a bit of sauce on the tip of it. I took a bite of it and immediately would have fallen on my butt had I not been already sitting down. A moan escaped my lips.
“That's amazing.” I tell him at the shear taste and feel of the hard bread melting away in my mouth. “How'd I get so lucky to land a man that knew how to cook?” I asked him
“I like meat and potatoes like the next person but I find cooking things like this, relaxing. The guys in college really hated to see me go.” He laughed.
“I know why.” I tell him. “Then again, I get to enjoy additional perks.” I tell him laughing and he joined in with me.
Shane's POV-
I watched Devon as she washed the dishes. It felt great to just do these random everyday things when I was around her.
“Anxious for work to start tomorrow?” She asks me.
“Nah. I already know everyone at the firm.” I tell her. Well, those I need to know. “I'm glad for Dad's help. It's great money.”
“But?” She says as she looks up at me, pausing with her hands in the dishwater.
“It still doesn't help that I still want to open up my studio some day.” I tell her. She pulls out a handful of white fluffy bubbles and blows them toward me. I caught some in my hand and smiled at her.
“You'll do it sooner than you think, I'm sure of it.” She tells me. “I have a year of college to do to get my certificate in interior design. It'll get easier when I'm done my schooling and start working. Maybe I should get a part time job.” I jumped up and went to her side. I wrapped my arms around her waist and kissed her hair.
“You'll do no such thing. My studio can wait. Meanwhile, I'll be able to build my portfolio.” I smiled into her cheek and nipped the tender skin below her ear as there was a knock on our door. “I'll get that.” I kiss her on the cheek.
“Buddy!” I stand there, looking at Marty, my long-time friend. “Long time no see bro!” And he pats me on the arm. “You're sister told me you moved up here.”
“Come in. Can I get you a beer?” I ask him and he nodded.
“Can I have what you're having?” He tells me and nodded toward Devon who was drying her hands from the dishes. She extended her hand toward him.
“Devon.” She tells him and offers a shy smile.
“Marty.” He takes her hand and then he looks at me. “Dude, I never pictured you all domesticated and shit.” He says. I feel myself blush. I felt the need to hold on to Devon.
“Things change.” I tell him as I give Devon a quick squeeze from behind.
Sidney's POV-
I couldn't believe the gall of this guy. I grew up with Marty being around us when we were kids. I had a humungous crush on him years ago and then he moved away with his parents. I knew that my brother kept in touch with him but I hadn't seen him since that day where his parents stopped by with him to say goodbye. It had been a sad day but happy one for me; it was the day I got my first real kiss from a boy. The Marty that had stood before me was different though. He appeared to be a self-centred and conceited prick that behaved like he was God's gift to women. I was glad to point him in the right direction if it meant that he be far away from me.
“Thanks hot stuff.” He tells me as he turns and walks towards the other side of the garage, to the stairwell. I found myself admiring his firm butt and those wide shoulders of his. Snap out of it, lady. And then Tony showed up in his Jeep.
“Who was that?” He asked me. I shrugged my shoulders.
“One of Shane's old friends.” I tell him. Come on. I pull him inside still annoyed at Marty. He used to be a nice guy. He treated me like one of the gang back in the day but no matter how great he he still looks now, it won't erase the fact that he wasn't the same guy.
Marty's POV-
I was back in town, visiting my parents who had moved back here while I was away at college. I found myself looking up my best pal, Shane Donitelli. We had been close once and though we had kept in touch, I last heard from him early in the new year. I looked him up and discovered that his parents still lived where I had last gone to say goodbye to them that day my parents shipped off with me in tow. Now that Dad had retired from the military, my parents moved back to where they were happiest and that brought me to spend my summers here, where I was happiest as a child.
I was shocked at the sight that beheld me when the Donitelli's door opened. Was that Sidney? Her raven black hair was down to her mid-back. Her bright blue eyes brightened at the sight of me, that is, until I opened my mouth to speak.
“Hey sexy, is Shane here?” Is what came out of my mouth. She smirked.
“Seriously? The name's Sidney in case you've forgotten.” She tells me. I couldn't help but eye her up and down, a smile of amusement crossing my lips. Sidney got feisty! I couldn't help but remember how shy and introverted she used to be.
“Should I let myself in or are you going to tell me where he is?” I tell her, leaning on the door frame. I knew she was getting annoyed and I loved that look of frustration that was building up in her as her entire body began to tense. She pointed to the garage and that's when I noticed that there was an apartment up above.
“He's up there.” She tells me.
“Thanks hot stuff.” I say as I walk away. Getting under her skin was so easy and I enjoyed it, still to this day. Yep, being back here might turn out to be more fun than expected. Let the good times roll!
I knocked on the door and found myself face-to-face with my old best friend. After a few introductions, I noticed the hot girl behind him.
“I never pictured you to be all domesticated and shit.” I finally tell him as he hugged his girlfriend Devon from behind.
“Wasn't there a girl named Devon that used to drop by and hang with your sister?” I asked him as he handed me a beer. We sat at the table. Shane nodded.
“The one and only.” He tells me. Out of respect for my friend and his girlfriend, I mouthed Wow! before she was able to see what I was doing. “So what brings you back here?”
“I'm here for the summer.” I tell him. “I thought I'd take a chance and look you up since we hadn't caught up in what feels like ages.”
“You're right.” He tells me. “Here's to old friends.” And we both take a giant sip of our beers.
“I'll leave you two to catch up.” Devon puts her hands on Shane's shoulders. She bends over and kisses him on the cheek and blushes because she's now got an audience. “You know where I'll be.” And she headed for the bathroom.
“Dude, you're whipped.” I tell him, laughing low enough so that Devon wouldn't hear us.
“You've just seen her. How could I not be?” He tells me.
“So this is it for you?” I ask him. He nods. “Wow!” I say.
“Brother, you should try it out some time.” He tells me. I laugh loudly, quiet down and the next thought through my mind was that of nearly six years ago when my heart fluttered massively as my lips met a then twelve year old, raven-haired, blue-eyed girl's lips.
“Maybe I will.” I tell him.
