Prologue
The waves thrashed against the sides of the ship, as it cut its way through the grey, icy waters. The air was cold and biting, and the wind howled with a sort of desperate whisper. And she stood there, alone, looking out over this unfriendly sea.
There was no horizon in any direction and a thick mist had draped itself across the ship and waters. She felt swallowed by it. She pulled off her delicate white lace glove, exposing her naked skin to the bitter elements. She held the glove over the side of the ship for a few seconds, and then released it. She watched as it fell- 2 meters, 20 meters, 50 meters- until finally, it hit the angry waters below where it was instantly swallowed up.
She started to imagine falling into the waters herself.
She wondered if she too would be swallowed up by the ocean as quickly as the glove had been. She wondered if the waters would pull her under and drag her to the depths of the sea. Maybe her body would hit against the side of the ship, knocking her unconscious before she even hit the waters.
And most of all, she wondered if she would finally find some kind of reprieve down there. Even if it was only for a moment, somewhere under those dark, silent waters? Her thoughts raced, and again she heard the wind and its desperate whisper.
Why couldn't anyone hear her desperate whisper?
