Chapter 1: The Mysterious Stranger

Breathing out in exhaustion, I let my boat just float across the murky waters. My search for my body has been unsuccessful as it had been decades since I last made that promise to myself. Groaning out, I laid on the hardwood as the boat rocked back and forth. Bringing a hand up to the sky, I let gravity quickly pull it back down. My arm landed with a 'thump' against the rotten surface, and I muttered curses under my breath. Bringing myself to stand up, I let my eyes scan the area before me. Something didn't feel right. The atmosphere felt different from before. A chill ran its way through my spine, and I sprinted down the main deck. Jumping, I landed on the edge and made sure I didn't fall through the wood. The more my soul leaves me, the more I fall through things. Like ghosts flying through paintings. My eyes scanned the disgusting waters and my heart pounded loudly in my ears. My body told me something was there, yet there was nothing. Shaking my head at my anxiety, I jumped down from the edge. As I walked towards the mast, that's when I heard something. It sounded like...a male singing. Only it was ten times creepier.

"Yo-ho-ho~ Yo-ho-ho-ho~"

The hell? I thought as I walked to the other side of the boat. The fog parted slightly, showing what was carrying the singing man. A pirate ship came parting the fog of the Triangle, and I couldn't help but notice something. The ship was sailing right next to mine, and I felt my fright prickle into excitement. I wasn't alone! About to say something, I then felt the air rush harshly against me. Looking down, I was surprised to see I suddenly was falling. Unamused and angry at the fact that I might have missed my chance to meet someone new, I tried to grip the wood to give me friction. My hand missed the wood, however, and went right through it instead. Spending those decades in the Florian Triangle really has done a number on my soul. Crashing into the sea, I saw my ship above me. Swimming up to it, I tried to put my hand through again, only this time I hit hardwood. Screeching in shock and surprise, I went to go swim around the massive base. My soul was just like my body, so my lungs began to soon scream for air. I grabbed the base and kicked off of it. The surface of the dirty waters brought hope as I started to swim at a fast pace. Breaking through to the surface of the water's horizon, the air was welcomed sweetly into my soul. Relief washed over me as I got and saw that the ghost ship with the mysterious singer stopped next to my boat. Grinning, I noticed a bit of rope on the exterior of the hull. Swimming up to it, I harshly gripped the side of the ghost ship and clutched the rope. Climbing, and hoping I don't fall again, I soon reached the edge. Pulling myself over, I did a duck and roll to land on my feet. Dusting off what I had, I took an observation to a reflective surface. My black shoes were still nice and didn't have too many scratches on them. My plum purple pants were fit nicely to suit my entertainment needs, and my black dress shirt matched with my plum purple tailcoat jacket. A black belt that had two card pockets, to fit my playing cards and my tarot cards, hung around my pants and clung nicely to my waist. My hair was always in a waterfall braid which worked with my plum purple top hat, complete with the magenta ribbon that tails fell over the rim of the hat to my neck that I always wear. Nodding, I felt that I was ready to meet this mysterious stranger. Heels clicking over the wooden surface, I walked to the middle where the railing was. The stranger was standing in the middle of the main deck, staring at my ship. I leaned on the rail, taking notice of the stranger's appearance. Like, for instance, I could hardly see the clothing but I could see that he was tall, had an afro, and had skeleton hands. Yes, skeleton hands. Was I about to meet a possible a tall, afro skeleton? Hell yeah, I was. Grinning from ear to ear, I stood up and jumped on the railing. Time to meet him.

"Yo!"

Jumping about ten feet in the air, whilst screaming, I laughed and sat on the railing. Standing was boring anyway. The male landed on the main deck and looked around wildly.

"Hey! I'm up here!" I said to him as he stopped suddenly.

His back was to me when he did that. Giggling a bit, I watched as he slowly turned and looked up to where my voice was.

"What's up? Well...besides me of course."

His jaw dropped and beads of sweat built on his skull. Shaking slightly, I could see he was having an internal battle with himself. I laughed again and he screamed. I immediately stopped laughing and tilted my head to the right.

"What? Is there something scary behind me?"

He ran around saying something about 'a ghost on his ship' and after about the fourth circle around the deck, he tripped and landed right on his face...or skull. Sliding off the rail, I landed on my feet and rushed over to where he was.

"Hey! Are you alright?" I questioned as he rolled over.

"There's a ghost on my ship..."

"Um...What?"

"You! I'm talking about you!" He screamed as he rapidly scooted backward on his behind, "You're the ghost on my ship!!"

"I think you're mistaken. I'm not a ghost."
"You're glowing, in the dark abandonment of this circle, and just appeared out of nowhere! You have to be a ghost."

"First off, I'm a soul. Second off, I swam over here."

"But I saw you! You...You just vanished!!!

"That's because I've been a soul for too long. I'm starting to lose my grip on things."

"So...you're not a ghost?"

"Nope."

"You aren't here to haunt me?"

"Nope. If anything, that's your job."

"What are you talking about?"

"You're a skeleton. You are a representation of the living dead." I said laughing.

"Oh." He said bluntly.

"Yeah."

An awkward silence befell the both of us. I started to rock back and forth on my heels and he just stood there, eye sockets blank. I took the moment to stare back and look at his appearance. Despite the few tears in his clothing, he did look pretty fancy for a skeleton. He has a black coat on with remnants of an orange shirt underneath. The orange ruffled cuffs still remained outside the jacket, and the orange collar stuck up around the coat. He had black pants, black shoes, and a black top hat that was on top of the black afro. The skeleton also had a blue, beaded ruffled necktie that was worn around his neck. The necktie was the only thing covering the spine and ribs of the skeleton, but the fabric only went to the middle of his body. The spine was shown, with a little of the pelvis because the pants didn't cover up all of the lower body. The last two things that were really noticeable about the man was the fact that he had a crack in his skull that looked like the omega sign, and he always seemed to carry around a cane and teacup.

"I'm Maddy, by the way."

"YOHOHOHO! I'm Brook!"

"Wanna see a magic trick?" I said, throwing him off guard.

"A what?"

"A magic trick. You know, with cards."

"But you don't have cards."

"Yes, I do."

"No, you don't"

"Yes, I do. They're right here on my bel-"

Feeling around, I felt that my cards were no longer there. The playing cards that were on the right side pocket were no longer there, and the tarot cards were also missing from the pocket on the left side of me.

"Oh. You're right. That's strange. I always have my cards on me."

"YOHOHOHOHO! Maybe you dropped them while taking a swim?"

"No, I wouldn't be so careless. Those cards are very special to me, I wouldn't just lose them."

"Maybe they're on that island over there."

"Island? What island?" I said, stopping my search.

I cranked my head to the right to see in the corner of my eye an island coming through the fog. Swallowing down hard saliva, the uneasy feeling crept its way through my spine. A buzzing sound began to ring through my ears, and my eyes glowed with an ominous moon-white. That is when I knew. The knowledge I had was that the one thing I was searching for was on this island. Now all I had to do was to search for it.
