Adrien knocked on the door again. He needed Nino. His hands were still shaking and his lip was bleeding because he kept digging his teeth into the sore skin. He was about to knock again when the door opened. A tired looking Nino yawned before finally set his gaze on his best friend.
His eyes were sharp with hurt. Adrien knew that Nino was aware of what happened at the apartment. Alya must have told him. Adrien opened his mouth but Nino held up his finger. "I told you so." He got out before Adrien could blink. "Now there's something I have to do as Marinette's friend..." The door slammed and Adrien was left standing out in the hall.
He knocked on the door more desperately and rapidly. "Nino!" Adrien exclaimed, trying hard to not wake up the neighbors.
"I'm not opening the door." A defiant voice came from behind the piece of wood.
"Are you serious?" Adrien sighed and rested his head on the worn wood. He closed his eyes and bit his lip. He wasn't going to stay out here all night. He stepped away from the door stuffed his hands in his pockets. "Would you accept an apology?"
Nino finally opened the door again and Adrien sighed in defeat. "I'm sorry."
Nino crossed his arms. "I'm not the one you need to be apologizing to." He pointed out and Adrien nodded. Nino opened his mouth and then closed it. He seemed to think for a moment before he finally settled on his words. "I thought you said that you were going to tell her?" His friend asked.
"I was but then it all happened so quickly! Chloe was there and then she wasn't and then Marinette ran out and it was a mess. I'm a mess." Adrien rambled.
"Serves you right." Nino said simply.
"I know! I know it my fault!" Adrien yelled in frustration. "I don't need you to remind me how much I screwed up!"
The door next door opened and an old man with a long grey beard peered out. "Not now Dumbledore!" They both said simultaneously. The old man nodded, closed the door and quickly did the lock.
A silence fell in the hallway and Nino was the first to break it. "You should come in." Adrien didn't need to be told twice and walked inside of the small apartment.
He would have admired it if he wasn't drowning in despair. He just took a seat at the table and gripped his own hands to get them to stop trembling. "I'm such an idiot." He rubbed his temples.
Nino set a kettle on the stove and dug through his cabinets for what Adrien assumed was tea. "You can say that again." He poured the hot water into two mixed pattern mugs and set a tea bag in both. He brought it over to Adrien but Adrien didn't want a drink. He wanted to go see Marinette.
"I know that look anywhere and I'm going to say a firm no." Nino nodded to him. "Marinette needs time and space... she's not going to feel any better if you show up at their door." Nino took a sip of his tea and grimaced. "It's shit, don't drink it."
Adrien didn't taste it as it went down his throat. Tea was supposed to calm him but it did nothing to settle the brewing storm inside of him. He was still hurt. He was still sad. Nino gave Adrien his mug and Adrien laughed. His heartache won out though. He drank the lukewarm water and could only pity himself.
He ran a hand through his hair and rubbed his red eyes. "Have you been crying?" Nino asked. He seemed genuinely surprised.
Adrien nodded because he was too tired to glare. "Of course. I care about Marinette." Adrien rested his forehead in his hands. "I don't know what to do..."
Nino stifled another yawn and let his gaze wander to the clock. "It's late. How about you sleep it off and then we'll come up with a big plan to get your girl back tomorrow." Adrien nodded because he was tired. It was late and he knew that if he fell asleep then maybe he could forget about Marinette's tearful eyes and the words she said. He wished he could forget the look that played out on Chloe's features.
Nino got up and brought him to the couch. He sat at the edge of the brown couch and waited. Nino threw a pillow and blanket in his general direction and then leaned on the door frame of his room. "I forgive you but if Alya found out I was generally kind to you, she'd probably kill me."
Adrien chuckled and fluffed up his pillow. "That sounds exactly like her." He unfolded the blanket he was given and turned to meet his friend's eyes. "Is that why I got that sad excuse for tea?"
"I want you gone by the morning." Nino's tone was joking and so was the grin that took over his face.
"I'll make breakfast..." Adrien offered with a hopeful glance.
"We'll talk over chocolate chip pancakes." Nino said. Adrien slipped off his shoes.
"I actually prefer waffles." Adrien shrugged and leaned back into his makeshift bed.
"We're going to have to find some common ground because I don't have chocolate chips or a waffle iron." Nino grinned.
"We'll go out to breakfast... I could go for some strawberry milk." Adrien said as thoughts of Marinette drifted into his mind once again.
"As long as you're paying." Nino turned around and mumbled a goodnight. Adrien got up and turned off the light and settled back down.
He tossed and turned but he could not fall asleep. Adrien kept thinking about their kiss and whether or not it would be their last.
