Chapter 29 - The Final Fight
Steve and I wove through the many soldiers separating us from Schmidt. I knocked one of them with my shield and threw them behind me. Steve shot me an impressed look and I winked in return.
He held his hand out for me and I hugged him. He shot up at the ceiling. We swinged across a sea of men. I would have said people but we both know that's not true.
Steve and I ran to catch up to the plane, close to taking off into the night. I struggled to keep up. Steve slowly stopped ahead. And I ran off the momentum and skidded to a halt a few feet in front of him. I let out a discouraged sigh.
"We were so close." I pout.
A sound behind us causes us to turn and watch as a car joins us. I'm ready to fight but I grin as I see two familiar heads poking out.
"Get in!" Colonel yells. Steve jumps into the front and I join Peggy in the back. We had barely put our feet in, when the car screeched ahead. I held on to Peggy's hand and she squeezed it. With the car's speed to help us, we sped ahead. The Colonel pressed a button and the car went even faster, leaving dust behind. Steve and I stood up, ready to latch on to the plane like a parasite.
"Keep it steady!" Steve yelled.
"Wait!" Peggy stopped. I turned towards her. She pulled me down and hugged me. I let out a ragged sob.
"I love you, Peg." I sighed. "I'll be back." I pulled away.
"I love you too." She smiled. "And you better!" I kissed her once on the cheek before taking Steve's hand. He had held it out as soon as I had pulled away. He gripped it tight.
"And take care of her, Steve." Peggy warned.
"I will. With my life." He said determinedly.
"Go get him." She smiled. I glanced at Colonel.
"Well I'm not hugging you." He grumbled. I rolled my eyes before tapping his helmet which earned a small smile.
We put our shields on our back and as soon as we were past the propellers, we jumped onto the wheel. I grunted at the impact and watched as the car stuck right between on and off the cliff. I sighed in relief.
The plane was off the ground and I felt the cool air against me. The mechanical compartment opened to tuck the wheel away. We held on to go in with it. We leaped over the railing and onto some kind of bridge.
We crouched, creeping so that no one sees us. I glanced up at Steve when he abruptly got up. I slowly got up too, looking around us warily. I followed his deflated gaze towards the missiles. I gasped when I took in the white bold letters. The names of cities. That's where these were headed. Steve glanced at the New York one and his face didn't fall. It built up into pure anger and frustration. But most important of all, determination.
We were startled out of the daze when footsteps sounded near us. A couple men ran and we waited for them to get on our level. Steve kicked one of them off the bridge. The other three readied their weapons. I kept up from behind the farthest one and pushed him over too. The one nearest Steve jumped forward with a knife. I took the other one with a head lock and a knock in his head with a gun. He was out. I kicked him off too. I watched Steve as he got another one.
But almost out of nowhere, more came. He hurried to one of the missiles and opened the latch. It fell off. It would land among the empty mountains so no one would be hurt. He kicked more through the hole, they flew off screaming. Steve jumped onto one of the missiles and when I glanced I saw that there was someone inside. I threw myself to the railing but watched helplessly as it went down. I was left fighting and punching the soldiers on board.
When I got the chance to glance back, I saw that the plane was heading back for us. I ran farther in the ship, when I saw that it was Steve. I hear a distant crash and it startled me into a crouch. He picked up his shield and joined me.
After looked for a couple minutes, we found the door that must belong to the control room. He opened a door slowly. There's a seat in the middle, facing the glass to the outside of the ship. We crept down the stairs, trying to get a glimpse to see if he's there. Well, turns out he wasn't. I cocked my head at the empty seat until I heard a low whine and shielded myself.
"You don't give up, do you?" He drawled.
"Nope!" Steve sasses. He ran at him, shielding the blows and immediately started fighting. When Schmidt dropped his weapon I leaped forward and kicked it away. Schmidt kicked Steve and forced him down. I hit him in the head, hoping to do something but he was unscathed. He tripped me and I fell to the floor with a grunt. I let out a string of curses before getting back up. Steve grabbed his leg and pushed him down and hit him with one of the boxes. I pulled him into a choke hold and we tumbled over. He fell out of my grasp and he let out a gasp.
Steve grabbed his shield and they fought. I got a couple hits in but it was no use getting between them. Steve was angry and he was taking it out in reckless fighting. When Schmidt pinned him down with his own shield, he head-butted him. Schmidt flew back. Steve slammed him against the controllers causing the plane to descend. I was thrown at the sudden change in direction.
We all flew to the top of the plane. Steve and Schmidt punched and hit each other. I tried to follow along the walls to the controls. I felt along the walls and moved as much as possible. But somehow Schmidt reached first and pressed a couple buttons and the plane straightened up. I fell to the floor with a thud. Steve landed on the railing and I crawled underneath a couple of the boxes and random things scattered on the floor.
"You could have the power of the gods!" Schmidt shouted. I heard the same low whine as he raised his gun. He shot at Steve but he ducked just in time. "Yet you wear a flag on your chest and think you fight a battle of nations!" He continued before shooting at Steve again. "I have seen the future, Captain!" Another shot. "There are no flags."
"Not my future!" Steve replied. He leaped onto the same floor as us and shields himself.
He scanned for me and when I caught his eye I winked. I leaped up and slammed Schmidt against the glowing blue weapon. At the same time Steve threw my shield from across the room and I jabbed him. We were both thrown back by something but he was more damaged. When I looked back, the area around it flowed an eerie blue, similar to the serum.
"What have you done?" Schmidt slowly got up and held a blue cube. "No!" He yelled in distress.
It let out blue almost lightning bolts and cleared the top of the air ship. I glanced up to see beautiful stars, scattered across the black, blue and purple sky. I stared in awe along with Steve but we were brought back to reality when Schmidt's hand started burning. Yes. Burning. Blue and purple flames lead up to the sky and he let out a scream of anguish. A bright light flashed and I turned away, unable to look at it for more than a second. But when it stopped he wasn't there.
Everything went back to normal and the ship kept moving.
It's like none of it had happened.
