Chapter 23 - Unwanted Zip-lining
The next mission meant trudging through light snow at the break of dawn. So I was already grumpy, finding it hard to see through the fog. He gestured behind at the soldiers hiding behind trees to come forward. They obeyed, holding out their guns. Steve paused, looking around as if something was out of place. I stood beside him and followed his gaze. He threw his shield, which hit a HYDRA soldier, who fell down with a loud groan. The shield boomeranged back and Steve set it on his arm again. I nodded at him.
Explosions rang around us as we ran forward. Every gun was going off and aimed in front of us.
Our missions went by in a blur. Each one even more successful than the last. We were deeply wounding them and we could tell because the number of factories on our map were decreasing. Peggy told me that she watched some of our missions in the cinema. She told me about a compass that Steve carried that had my picture in it. It was cut out from the newspaper article announcing the success of the serum. I remember seeing it. I tried to get a glimpse of it on our next mission but I never got the chance.
We were shuddered close on the cold mountain. Steve stood with some men, guarding us as we took turns keeping warm. I was about to get up and stand next to Steve when I heard Bucky talk. I hesitated, not wanting to interrupt.
"Remember when I made you ride the Cyclone at Coney Island?" Bucky turned to Steve with a smile.
"Yeah and I threw up?" Steve asked. I bit back a laugh.
"This isn't payback is it?" Bucky sighed while looking around him warily.
"Now why would I do that?" Steve smirked as he looked along the rope and up behind him, catching my eye. He smiled and I came up next to him.
"If I fall down to the abyss," I sighed dramatically. "Tell Peggy that I stole her favorite gun." Bucky chuckled and Steve shook his head.
"You won't." he stated.
"We were right." Jones piped up from behind us, grabbing all of our attention. "Dr. Zola is on the train. HYDRA dispatcher gave him permission to open up the throttle. Wherever he's going, they must need him bad." Steve put his helmet on and got ready.
"Let's get going because they're moving like the devil." Jacques drawled as he brought down his binoculars. We hurried around, grabbing the equipment we needed and setting it up.
"We only got about a 10-second window!" Steve shouted above the howling wind. "You miss that window, we're bugs on a windshield."
"Reassuring." I muttered.
"Mind the gap!" Jacques yelled.
"Better get moving, bugs!" Dugan piped up.
Steve grabbed onto the first zip line with both hands and he gestured to me to come forward.
"Wait. We're doing this together?" I barely finished the sentence before he grabbed me forward. I held onto his body and closed my eyes as I felt them push us forward. We left behind a trail of snow and my screams.
