Chapter 2 - Training
I grinned at my sister. Peggy really knew how to put these men in their place. As soon as one of the new recruits, Hodge made that suggestive comment, I could practically feel the cool anger radiating off of Peggy. She punched him square in the nose and I admired her form. I laughed out loud. Peggy turned to me and winked. Steve also looked pleased and when he saw her wink at me, I saw his wheels turning. He mouthed to me "Sister?" he tilted his head and his blue eyes sparkled. I gave a stern nod and turned my attention to the rest of the soldiers.
"Agent Carter! And... Agent Carter!" Colonel Phillips barked. The soldiers snapped to attention and the slouching figures turned rigid. Peggy and I turned around swiftly.
"Colonel Phillips." we chorused.
"I see you're breaking in the candidates. That's good." he nodded at Hodge. "You. Get over there in that line and stand at attention until somebody tells you what to do." He gets back in line as if nothing happened.
He walked back and forth to look at each of the recruits' faces. He paused when he reached Steve and frowned at Dr. Erskine. He shrugged. "We're going to win this war because we have the best men... And because they are going to get better." he squinted his eyes at Steve again. "Much better."
The next day, I was up bright and early. I was excited to see how skilled the recruits were. Well actually, how much work Peg and I had to do. As soon as we started, I cringed at some of them. But the one that gripped my attention was Steve. He wasn't very physically fit but he used every strength in his body to try. He worked harder than any of the other soldiers and that said something.
"One woman and one man are going to be the first of a new breed of super soldiers. We already have our woman." he glanced at me and I nodded in return. "We just need a man. And they are personally going to escort Adolf Hitler to the gates of hell." Colonel finished. He glanced at Hodge and shot him a smile. That exchange told me exactly who he wanted to choose. But the final decision goes to Dr. Erskine.
Hodge was always the first to succeed in all of the training exercises. In one of the last exercises, they had to get a flag down from a thin pole. If they got it, they can ride with Peggy and me the rest of the way.
We rode a little bit ahead of them on a jeep and stopped just past the flagpole. Peggy had a clipboard in her hand and a pen between her teeth. We turned around to see who would finally get the flag down.
"That flag means that we're only at the halfway point." The commander barked. I looked past him to see Steve trailing behind him and stop. He bent over and put his hand on his knees, looking sick to his stomach. "First man to bring it to me gets a ride back with the Agent Carters. MOVE! MOVE!" Everyone scurried over to the pole and it was pure chaos. They used each other as ladders but also pulled each other off. Hodge was close but he slid right off. "Nobody's got that flag in 17 years!" I inspected the pole. How can anyone get the flag?
Once he ordered everyone back to keep running, Steve walked up to the pole. Peg and I looked at each other in confusion.
"Rogers! I said fall in!" he ignored his pestering and looked down at the pole. I followed his gaze and immediately smiled. He took the screws off and we watched the pole fall with a huge thud. After throwing the screws on the ground, he took the flag and handed it to the commander with a smile. "Thank you, sir." The rest of the soldiers looked very dumb and a bit jealous. They glanced around. Hodge scoffed in annoyance. Steve jumped into the Jeep and sat next to me, which was the only seat available. I grinned at him, hoping that he could see how proud I was of what he had done. He smiled and nodded at Peggy and me.
