Shelby's POV
I've never, ever seen a night that was darker than this one.
The New York City sky was the darkest shade of black I'd ever seen, so dark that someone could get lost among its pitch blackness. There were absolutely no stars out tonight, and the moon was a tiny, barely-glowing slit, hardly even visible up in the night sky. The street lamps seemed dimmer than usual, flickering on and off, on and off.
It was obviously very dark.
Which matched the mood of my current scenario perfectly.
I stood in my wolf form, alert on all four paws, bleeding from several cuts and wounds on my furry white legs and down my back. The Turtles and I had invaded the lair of the Foot that night, and now we were in a full-on battle, fighting our enemies. I'd been driven outside into the streets, where I was now facing an old foe.
I glared at him with glowing ice-blue eyes. I unsheathed my claws, a growl rumbling in my throat, ready to attack. Across from me, only a few feet away, my enemy growled back at me, his dark amber eyes glowing with hatred.
This enemy was Rahzar.
Also known as Chris Bradford, my father.
"Well, well, well," he said in his raspy voice, his lips curled into a sneer. "If it isn't the Foot Clan's biggest traitor, back again."
I morphed from my wolf form back to my regular body, my four white paws becoming two pale feet and two pale arms and hands. My long claws retracted into nails, still sharp and ready to slash at my opponent. The white fur on my body turned into long white hair on my head, blowing sideways in the night air.
"Dad," I spat at him, gripping my onos.
"Dad?" Rahzar snarled at me. "Don't you ever call me 'Dad'. You betrayed our Clan, you betrayed our family, and you betrayed me. You're no daughter of mine!"
I gripped my onos tighter with a growl. I knew he was only saying that to get under my skin and bother me, so he could set me off and have an advantage.
But the words still stung me, harder than any wound I'd ever received.
"That's good," I said anyway, drawing my onos.
Within seconds, I'd rushed up to him, jumping up and smacking him clean across the face with the side of my weapons.
"Because you're no father of mine."
Rahzar let out a loud roar of fury, whipping around to face me. Unsheathing his bony claws, he lunged at me with a snarl, and I knew we'd entered full battle mode.
I swung my onos, and they flew forward in my hands, hitting my mutant father right near the nose. He let out a snarl of pain as the two weapons ripped open a gash right on his big fat snout, which immediately began to bleed.
Half of me was satisfied, half of me was horrified, with what I'd just done.
Another half of me knew that what I'd just done had made my ex-father even more angry. He snarled at me, his amber eyes glowing with a murderous light.
"That's it," he growled. "I will kill you, Shelby. I will kill you right here, right now, and you can die in shame."
He lunged for me, but I side-stepped, flinching as his matted, ungroomed black fur brushed against my arm.
Seriously, that fur was nasty.
Rahzar whipped around to face me. I faced him back, glaring at him with an amount of hate equal to his. I looked him right in those cold amber eyes. I wasn't about to back down now.
"You should be ashamed to call yourself a Bradford," the werewolf-like creature snarled at me. "Bradfords are strong, noble, and they fight to the end. Bradfords are not sniveling, weak cowards who betray their own. You and Tyler are both pathetic."
Pathetic?
I'll show him pathetic.
I sprang forward with a furious roar, morphing back into a wolf in midair and latching myself onto my mutant father with my long, curved claws. He tried to shake me off with an angry growl, but I held on for dear life, fury still burning inside of me.
"I'm not a sniveling coward like you think I am," I snarled through my wolf muzzle. "And neither is Ty. We left the Foot because they're pure evil! We found out the truth about Hamato Yoshi. He's the good guy. You aren't!"
"Hamato Yoshi," Rahzar snarled. "He's poisoned your mind, too. Just more proof that you're weak, undeserving of the title of a Bradford. You and your idiot brother have brought shame to our family's name."
Undeserving of the title of a Bradford.
Shame to our family's name.
The words rang in my wolf ears, and I tightened my clawed grip on my father's shaggy, black-furred arm.
I don't deserve to be a Bradford, don't I?
Fury was beginning to make my vision go blue, my clawed hands turned cold, and I felt a long, angry growl rumbling in my throat. I sank my claws deeper into my father's arm as he tried to shake me off, beginning to draw blood.
"You've done horrible things to my brothers and I," I snarled. "You've abused us. You've said that we'd always be nothing, that we were a pothole in your road. A real father wouldn't do that! A real father would care for his kids, love them and protect them! But you haven't done any of that! I can't possibly see how Aiden could still want to be with you, you monster!"
With that, it began.
I surged my furry head down and bit my father right in the arm, ignoring his horribly messy fur and sinking my fangs in deep. As soon as my teeth hit the mutant's skin, frost started to form. It began to crawl up my father's arm, quick and cold, like a rapidly-growing weed.
Rahzar looked alarmed. For a brief moment, his dark eyes widened with fear. But then they narrowed again, glaring at me, the hatred in them clear.
The frost had finished spreading up the mutant's arm and was now heading two separate directions-one up, one down.
Rahzar snarled at me. Quick as a flash, he raked his claws across my furry arm, and I howled in pain and let go of him, dropping from his arm to the ground. I morphed back to my regular form and quickly examined the wound.
He'd torn open a bleeding gash; it wasn't deep, but it still burned like fire. I winced, but I still managed to glare up at my father, my tail lashing with anger and my ears flattened.
I was shocked at what I saw.
Frost had nearly covered Rahzar's body completely, hardening into solid ice wherever it went. Both of his clawed arms, his bony feet, and his torso area were already frozen solid, and the frost was rapidly spreading up his furry black chest.
"N-no!" he managed as the frost surged up toward his neck. "Ice...cold...no!"
He glared down at me, and the pure hatred in his eyes nearly made me gasp out loud.
"Shelby," he snarled. "Traitor. The next time you have the misfortune of seeing me, I will rip you to shreds. You and your brother both."
He gasped as his neck froze solid, and the frost spread up to his chin, rising up to his face.
"Disgrace..."
That was the last thing he managed to croak before the frost covered his head completely and it turned to ice, freezing him with his mouth wide open in what looked like a terrified scream. I watched as it spread up his long ears, right to the very tips, and froze them, too.
Before I knew it, I was staring at a glistening ice sculpture of my father, his face frozen in a last expression of terror. I sighed, bowing my head. There'd been something else on his face.
Pure, absolute hatred.
Hatred for me.
He's a horrible person, I told myself. He deserves this.
But deep down inside, I still couldn't see how anyone's father could hate their kid so much.
"Shelby!"
A new voice called. A whipped around, onos drawn, ready to attack.
It was just Mikey and Ty, running toward me. Both of their eyes were full of worry, their hair/mask tails flying in the cool night breeze.
I sheathed my onos and relaxed just as Mikey practically tackled me, squeezing me in a bear hug. I had to practically push him away, and when he finally let go, he found blood on his plastron.
That's when he saw my wound.
"Shelby!" he gasped, his eyes widening to the size of saucers. "What happened?"
"My Dad," I muttered. "I fought him, and...he clawed me."
"You fought him?" Tyler echoed.
He looked over at the ice statue of Rahzar in surprise.
"It looks like you won," he remarked.
Mikey looked over at the frozen mutant and gasped.
"Whoa!" he exclaimed. "Shelby, you froze him solid? Dude, that is so cool."
It didn't seem so cool to me.
"Uh...come on, guys," I said. "Let's get out of here."
"Yeah, before Dad melts," Ty agreed.
I knew it would take hours, maybe even a day or two, for Rahzar to completely defrost. And when he did, I knew he'd be extra angry with me, and with Ty, too. I knew he'd be ready to rip us apart the next time he saw us.
But I'd be ready for him.
Ty and me both.
Rahzar had been beaten before, and he could be beaten again.
My tail started to wag a little, and a grin spread across my face. Ty, Mikey, and I sped off into the night, leaving a sparkling ice statue of my horrible mutant father behind us.
