10|Uncertainty and Apologies

Daniel left their apartment early the following morning, before Faith was even up. She woke up to the silence in the room, but the hurling of traffic outside which indicated that people were up and ready to start their day.

After her breakdown with Kaylyn the previous night — Kaylyn trying to calm her down while faith was just babbling nonstop and crying — they agreed to meet at Faith's house to discuss things.

Feeling drained and at a loss, Faith dragged herself to the kitchen where she poured herself some orange juice. The glass paused midair to her mouth when she spotted the vodka bottle on the counter along with her wedding ring beside it. Losing her appetite for the beverage, she placed it down and meekly reached for the silver metal with shaky hands.

The words she had said to Daniel came rushing back full force, leaving Faith saddened and thinking she might have possibly ruined things for everyone. She had snapped — said things that she would never thought of saying under any other circumstances. She rubbed her temple to ease it of the tension that was slowly building in her head, sniffing once more when her eyes watered.

She picked up the phone and she dialed her mother's number, wanting someone to talk to in that very instant because being alone — being alone with her thoughts, especially — left her open to too many things she'd rather not think about.

But just as she was about to send out the call, she put the phone down, suddenly not wanting her mother's opinion in the matter. She would definitely blow things out of proportion. Faith sighed, she paced the room unendingly, nibbling at her nails with the phone clutched in her hand.

She opted to call Daniel, to find out where he was, to apologize even, but she didn't do any of that because she feared doing so might cause more harm than good. The phone buzzed in her hand and Faith basically jumped, the phone almost falling from her hands with the fright that the vibration brought.

She paused and swiped the screen to see that it was a text message from Jason, asking how she was and if she was ready for Lily's procedure tomorrow.
Raking her fingers through her hair, Faith threw the phone on the sofa, thinking that the last thing she needed was to be reminded of Jason. Jason who have been her friends for years, yet suddenly, she felt awkward when he hugged or slightly touched her. Faith knew in herself that such a thing had never happened before and so she questioned her feelings for her best friend.

She wanted to laugh at the ludicrousness of her thoughts and she wanted to cry because it felt too real to just be shrugged off and cast aside.

Faith muttered a loud curse at her confliction and confusion. Maybe it was just a case of typical cold feet, she thought. Maybe she was just too nervous about the whole surrogacy process. That had to be it.

"Faith?" A voice came, causing Faith to immediately dash to open the door.

Kaylyn presented herself on the other side, concern evident on her face.

"Hey, are you OK?" She asked as she pulled her friend in for a hug, knowing her question was ridiculous, but nevertheless thinking it needed to be asked.

Faith sniffed, giving an abrupt nod before they both moved into the living room. They both took a seat on the double seated sofa before Kaylyn spoke.

"Can I get you anything? Something to drink, maybe?" she asked, not at all liking how stressed her friend looked.

Faith shook her head. "No thanks."

Kaylyn nodded, letting a moment pass before she addressed the issue. "Ready to tell me what happened?"

"I think I might have ruined all my chances of getting this baby?" She softly administered, eyes leveled on the blankness of the carpet.

"Tell me what happened," Kaylyn prodded, reaching for Faith's hand where she gently squeezed it in reassurance that she was safe to continue.

"I don't know Kaylyn, I just kinda blew up. I don't know what happened, maybe it was because of what he said—"

"What did he say?" Kaylyn inquired coolly.

"He was fired. I guess that just made me snap because it seems I'm always the one trying while he seems as cool as a cucumber," she sniffed, brushing the tears from her face.

Kaylyn was silent, her friend's words taking her by surprise. As soon as her lips were thawed of it's numbness and a reply awaited execution, Faith spoke again.

"Kaylyn," Faith croaked out. "I think I'm making a big mistake." She exclaimed discreetly to her friend, tears running freely down her face.

"Faith, calm down..." Kaylyn tried to console her but she seemed hysteric.

"I don't know what I want anymore, Kay. What if all this will blow up in my face? What if this is a mistake and I'm not ready?" She cried, looking to Kaylyn for answers.

Kaylyn quickly scrambled to her knees, positioning herself directly in front if Faith where she held both her hands.

"OK, honey. You need to breathe," she softly said, maintaining eye contact.

Faith nodded, doing as she was told. Closing her eyes and inhaling oxygen into her seemingly deflated lungs.

"OK, now think about what you want. What was the purpose of starting all this?" She asked Faith who instantly licked her lips.

She sniffed, face made up for more tears. "I wanted a little Sapphire or a little Jojo," she sobbed. "I wanted a family of my own, Kay, but what if it isn't my time?"

Kaylyn gently squeezed her hands, smiling. "You love Daniel, right?"

More tears came with her reply. "I do, but you should have heard the things I told him, Kaylyn. I gave him back the ring and I told him he should bring it back to whatever pawn shop he bought it from in the first place. I was angry at him because every time he brings my hopes up, it is always knocked down. I don't want to do this alone Kay, I – I want someone who can be there with me throughout everything that I do and that doesn't only mean being there physically; someone who can help me because at the end of the day Kay, we both want this baby..." She trailed off to wipe her tears.

"Please tell me this is just cold feet and I'm not making a grave mistake," her eyes pleaded with kaylyn's for the truth.

Kaylyn swallowed. "You want to know what I really think?" She asked at which Faith quickly nodded.

"Yes," the word seemed almost breathless.

       "I—"

Thinking that he'd heard enough, Daniel quickly made an appearance.

"Faith, honey," another voice came, both heads snapping up to find Daniel with a bouquet of flowers in hand. "I'm sorry."

Faith glanced at Kaylyn before her eyes went back to Daniel. "I know what you probably must be feeling and I can't blame you. I haven't deemed myself worthy for a woman like you and for that I'm sorry, but I promise, I'll make this work. I'll be the best man to you and the best dad to this baby who will be the light of our lives. I love you, so please, give me another chance. Give us another chance," he said softly, his words low, meaningful... Convincing.

Though Faith was crying, a smile curled the corners of her lips because this time it wasn't sad tears, but those which spoke of the complete opposite. She bounded from her seating position and moved towards Daniel and soulfully embraced him in a hug, her action evidence enough to her new feelings.

This was what she wanted, she told herself repeatedly.

Kaylyn stood watching as everything unfolded before her eyes. She watched as Daniel brazenly looked up and deviously smirked at her while hugging Faith, his eyes settled on Kaylyn while he rose a daring brow.

Kaylyn swallowed, suspicions immediately clouding her thoughts.

NEXT, ON 'FOR THE SAKE OF HER CHILD:

"I'm telling you, if you dare try to hurt my friend, I'll make it my mission to destroy you!" Kaylyn seethed, jabbing her finger in Daniel's chest.

He only laughed. "And what will you do? Tell Faith that I'm not right for her, like you were about to before I walked in on you two?" He cocked a challenging brow.

Kaylyn gasped, realizing he had overheard her earlier conversation with Faith.

Daniel tsked.

"Lily could be pregnant as we speak. What are you gonna do 'bestie' give Faith a reason to hate you, because she'll never believe you to me," he winked and then he stepped past Kaylyn, leaving her completely frazzled.

Until next time...
