Chapter 9
I found Daryl rummaging through his truck looking for God knows what. I slowly walked up to him and tapped on the side of his truck causing him to jump and look up at me. I held up my hands. "Sorry, didn't mean to startle you," I said. Daryl grunted and continued to look in his truck.
"Something I can help ya with?" he asked gruffly. I rolled my eyes. He was the most bipolar person I know. First he kissed me and wanted to act like we were together again and now he's back to being pissed. "Just wanted to let you know we're heading to the CDC tomorrow."
Daryl scoffed. "The CDC's a bust, even you know that," I shook my head. "I know but I'm not dumb enough to tell anyone that," the words just flew out of my mouth and I automatically regretted it. Daryl stopped looking in his truck he spun around and glared down at me.
"What did you just say to me?" he asked through clenched teeth. I felt my breath catch in my throat. I didn't want him mad at me. "Sorry. I just-I...sorry," I looked down and my shoes became interesting all of the sudden. Daryl's placed a finger under my chin and made me look at him.
"Sorry," he grumbled. He doesn't apologize to just anyone so I took advantage of it. I sighed and shook my head. "S'okay just don't understand why you're so upset," he scoffed. "I'm not upset. These people just don't know what they're doing," I shrugged. "That's why Rick's the leader," Daryl scoffed again. "Rick looks to Shane."
My eyes went wide as I pondered over what he had just said. He had a point the more I thought about it. It was always Rick and Shane talking about the group's next move and Shane always won except this time. "You have a point," I said quietly. Daryl chuckled. "When do I not?"
I snorted. "You're full of yourself." Daryl looked down at me and smirked. I sighed when I saw it. Truthfully I hated it, but it was also the smirk I fell in love with. He broke his gaze from me and turned around to go back to rummaging through the truck.
"What are you looking for?" I asked him curiously. Daryl turned around for a second to look at me. "My smokes," he said before turning around to look in the truck again. I chuckled and started heading towards the RV where I left my bag earlier. "Where are you going?"
I waved a hand behind me at Daryl and went to retrieve my bag. I smirked when I picked it up and walked back over to him. He had stopped rummaging through his truck and now he was leaning against the open door watching me. I slowly walked back over to him and sat my bag down in the driver's seat. I unzipped it and started going through it.
"What are you doing?" Daryl asked while peering over my shoulder. I nudged him backwards with my elbow lightly and continued looking through my bag until I found what I was looking for. I turned around to Daryl and shoved two cartons of cigarettes in his hand along with a couple lighters.
Daryl looked down and his eyes seemed to light up like it was Christmas morning. "Where did you get these?" he asked me while flipping the cartons over in his hands. I smiled a little. "I got them on the last run before...well yeah," my voice trailed off not wanting to tear open the fresh wound of Merle being left behind and cutting off his own hand.
Daryl looked over at me with a glum look and nodded slightly catching on to what I meant. He quickly opened one of the cartons and removed a pack. He quickly took a cigarette out and lit it up taking a long drag. He sighed happily and leaned against the door.
I threw my bag over my shoulder and looked up at him. He offered the cigarette to me, but I shook my head. I wasn't really in the mood for one right now. "I could kiss you right now," he breathed while taking another drag of the cigarette. I smirked up at him and got closer.
"What's stopping you?" I asked while tilting my head up towards him. Daryl wasn't even looking at me at this point. He was looking over my head. I turned around to see Glen standing there starring at us. I groaned. "Take a picture it will last longer," I yelled over at Glenn.
He instantly dropped his stare at us and walked away. I looked back over at Daryl who had an amused look on his face. "Do you think he knows?" I asked him while looking at my feet again. I watched the cigarette hit the ground as the tow of Daryl's boot stamped it out.
"You mean about our history?" he asked in return. I barely nodded and look back up at him. "Probably, He's not dumb he's a chinaman," I rolled my eyes and punched him in the shoulder. "Do you ever have anything nice to say?" I asked him. He smirked. "Only to you, beautiful," he shut the door to his truck and started walking towards the quarry pond.
I stood there for a second. "You coming?" I looked up to see Daryl standing a few feet ahead of me. I looked back over at the group who were now sitting around the fire probably getting ready to start dinner. I looked back over at Daryl who arched an eyebrow. I threw my bag in the back of his truck and started to walk over to him.
We made it down to the pond and it was quiet between us. I loved it down here. The water was clear as crystal and there were no way for walkers to get down here unless they came down the path. It was absolutely peaceful down here. Sometimes you would forget that the world had gone to shit when you sat down here.
I sat down and Daryl sat down heavily beside me. It stayed quiet between us for a little while. We stared out at the water as the sun was starting to set. "Do you ever think about it?" Daryl asked me quietly while barely looking at me. I stayed silent for a second before finally asking, "Think about what?"
Daryl shifted to look at me but stayed silent. I looked away trying to process what he was getting at. "Do you ever think about things before the apocalypse?" I sighed and leaned back against my hands. Daryl followed me. "All the time," I slowly, "school, work, friends.....family," I finished quietly.
Daryl shifted a little and I felt his hand overlap mine. He squeezed it lightly. "That's not what I meant, but I understand," I looked over at him. "Then what did you mean?" I asked. Daryl leaned close and I thought he was gonna kiss me again. "Do you ever think about us?" he whispered.
I pulled back a little to get a better look at him. Was he being serious right now? I looked back over at the water. "I don't know...sometimes," I said. I looked back over at him and he was staring at me intently. "Do you miss it?" he asked. I shrugged. "Sometimes," I whispered.
He came closer and placed a light kiss on my lips, our lips were barely touching. I pulled back and touched my lips lightly. "What are you doing?" I asked still trying to figure out what was going on. Daryl grunted and rolled his eyes. "Forget it," he said while standing up.
He walked a few feet away while I stayed sitting on the ground. "Come on I'm not leaving you down here," he said. I rolled my eyes. "I'm a big girl," I stated. I heard his footsteps and then he pulled me to my feet roughly. Well, moment ruined. I tried to pull my arm free but he was too strong.
We approached camp and he instantly let go of my arm and stalked off leaving me standing there while the rest of the group sat there staring at me with confused expressions. I walked past them avoiding their eyes and went to my tent. I was now not in the mood to deal with anyone.
I laid down heavily on my sleeping bag and let out a sigh. I was staring at my tent ceiling with my hands above my head thinking about the day. Daryl kissed me twice. I had no clue what had gotten into him. I placed my hands above my head and sighed once again.
I felt a tear escape and I quickly wiped away. Honestly, I missed us. I missed us being stupid in high school together. I missed his sarcastic humor. I missed when he genuinely smiled at me and wrapped his arms around me. I missed the way he smelled. I missed the way his soft blue eyes lit up when he looked at me. I missed him.
My cheeks were now hot and I knew I was crying. I quickly wiped them away and grabbed a bottle of water. I ran a hand through my hair and sighed for what seemed like the millionth time in the last few minutes. I heard the hushed tones of everyone and it sounded like they were turning in for the night.
I quickly changed into some sweats pants and a hoodie to get more comfortable. I wasn't tired at all, but I didn't want to go back out there. Suddenly a rock hit my tent. What the hell? I knew walkers couldn't throw rocks. I rolled my eyes only guessing who it could be.
"Go away," I grumbled. "I'm coming in whether ya like it or not," I heard the southern drawl. I knew it was him. I heard him step closer and the zipper being moved. His head popped in. "I thought I told you to go away," I growled while turning my back to him.
I heard the zipper again, but I knew he was still there. "I told you I was coming in anyway," I rolled my eyes. A plate a food was shoved in front of my face. I slowly grabbed it. "What's this?" I asked. "A peace offering," Daryl stated simply. I poked at meat in front of me.
"I meant what meat is it?" he cocked an eyebrow at me, "right squirrel I should've known." He sat down across from me and ate his food in silence. I poked at first then took a slow bite. "Why are you here?" I asked him. He scoffed. "Figured you'd be hungry, sorry for caring."
It was my turn to scoff. "Since when do you care?" once again open mouth insert foot. He stopped eating and I looked over at him slowly. I was waiting on him on him to get mad and throw something, but he didn't. He took another bite of his squirrel before speaking.
"I've always cared about you," he said. I looked away and then back at him. We held each other's gaze before I looked back down at the squirrel. I poked at it again suddenly losing my appetite. It was quiet between us again. I sighed and sat my plate down not wanting to eat anymore.
I kicked off my shoes and laid down on my sleeping bag. Daryl was still sitting across from me. He was no longer eating; he was just staring at me. He nodded slightly and got up. I heard the tent being unzipped and I sat up. "Wait," Daryl turned around and looked at me questionably. He grunted. "Stay with me," I stated more than asked.
He turned back around and I knew I had said the wrong thing. I knew he was leaving and I knew I shouldn't have even asked him to stay. I sighed and laid back down closing my eyes. I heard the tent zip and I figured he was gone. I heard a thud and looked up to see Daryl removing his boots before he laid down beside me.
He didn't say anything to me. He unzipped my sleeping bag and crawled into it. Before he zipped it up he gestured for me to get in beside him. I slowly slid in beside him before he zipped it back up. I laid on my side trying to avoid his touch. He was being so weird tonight. He shifted and wrapped an arm around my waist. He kissed below my ear before I heard his soft snores. Then I fell asleep.
