Chapter 35
I'm gonna have a few questions at the end of this chapter! So make sure you answer them! I got 6 comments on the last chapter!!! Keep those amazing comments coming! I hope to see more!
Okay I just wanted to address this because I have been asked multiple times. I am not writing a new book about Emery and Daryl in high school and their relationship. It would have made more sense to write it before writing FTLOD. Yes, I have considered it. I was going to write a pre apocalypse story with Daryl and Emery back in high school before I wrote FTLOD but I decided against it and decided to go with the apocalypse story with the flashbacks. I found the flashbacks different and figured people would be more intrigued by getting that small short glimpse to back in the day, ya know? Don't worry there will be plenty more flashbacks! Anyway I just wanted to address that and just let everyone know my thoughts on the idea.
Reedus kisses for everyone! xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Cold. It was bitterly cold. I had walked out of the gates with pants and a thin hoodie on. Much to my dismay it had started snowing. I shivered as I tried to pull the hoodie around me tighter. The snow was coming down in huge flakes at a fast pace.
I kept my crossbow in my lap as I propped my feet up on a branch across from me. Maybe I shouldn't have done this. Maybe I was overreacting. I sighed and tried to settle in the tree comfortably. Obviously I wasn't going anywhere until the light was up.
~~
I woke up what I thought was the next morning. The sun was already up. It didn't seem like it was too far up so I assumed it was late morning. I slung my crossbow on my back and quickly made my way down the tree. I quickly slung my crossbow back around to the front and started walking.
I had no clue where I was or where I was going. It was dark last night and I just kept walking not even paying attention to what direction I was going in. It was official. I was lost. I sighed and leaned against a tree. No food, only light clothing, and no water.
I would freeze to death out here. I needed to go back. Whether I wanted to or not. I looked up in the sky. The sun rises in the east and sets in the west. I needed to head east. I needed to head towards the sun. Who knew how long it would take for me to get back to the gates.
I pushed myself off the tree and started walking in what I hoped was the right direction. It seemed like I had already been walking for hours when I had only been walking for about maybe 30 minutes. I guess I was so frustrated last night that I didn't even notice how far I had walked.
After a couple hours of walking I decided to stop and rest. I sat down under a tree and rested my crossbow in my lap. I wiped the sweat from my forehead and sighed. I needed to get moving again. I stood up and stretched a little before setting off again.
~~
The sun was starting to set and the air was getting chilly again. I had been walking all day. Who knew if I was even walking in the right direction anymore. It seemed like I was walking longer to get back than when I had left. I sighed and stopped again looking up at the sky.
The clouds were a dark gray and were covering the sun which I knew was sinking quickly. I quickened my pace trying to hurry having a little boost of confidence feeling like I was going the right way. Finally I saw the bricks from the housing edition coming into view.
I took off in a full sprint to get back to the gates. I stopped dead in my tracks when I noticed about 20 walkers just chilling in front of the gates. There was no way I was getting past all of them alone. I knew no one was out keeping watch. They felt safe here.
I sighed and looked for an easier way to do this. I noticed a tree along the side of the brick wall and decided that if I could sneak across quietly I could climb the tree and go over the brick wall without them even noticing. I sighed and stepped out of the tree line.
I quickly made my way over to the tree surprisingly without any walker noticing. I climbed the tree and made my way on top of the brick wall before letting myself drop on the other side behind Carol and Sophia's old house. I felt a triumphant smile go across my face. I ran my hand slowly over the side of the house and felt my smile fade.
I shook my head lightly and ran over to Rick's house. I quickly knocked on the door. Rick's face was shocked when he saw me him knowing I had left. "No time for a reunion there's walkers and a ton of them right outside the gate and they have to go," I said.
Rick nodded slightly and ran out the door with me. We knocked on the door where TDog, Glenn, and Shane were staying and we quickly ran towards the gate. Since yesterday they had managed to get the wood slats over the iron bars of the gate which we could use to our advantage.
We all used our silent weapons to take them out. We definitely didn't need any more attracted to the noise. "I'm gonna climb up the wall and take some out from up there," Rick nodded and I went to climb the tree that I had climbed just a week before.
I quickly hopped over to the brick wall and crept across watching my feet. I stopped a couple feet away from the gate and loaded a bolt into my crossbow. Rick and the other three had started taking out walkers through the gate which really wasn't helping. We would just have to move the bodies later.
I aimed and watched as a bolt stuck through a walker's skull. I slowly started taking them out one by one. There were two left which were a little further from the gate. I reached back to take out another bolt but I grasped air. I slung my crossbow on my back.
"I got 'em," I said to the men. I jumped down from the wall and took out the first one with ease. The fucker didn't even see it coming. I whistled at the other one that was aimlessly wandering around. It turned around and started growling now finding its dinner.
I rolled my eyes as it started coming towards me. I raised my knife up ready to kill it when a bolt sunk through its skull and it fell to the ground. There was only one other person that belonged to. I looked up and saw Daryl standing on the wall where I previously stood.
"I had that, ya know," I started moving the bodies away from the gate and grabbing my bolts from some of their heads. I heard someone's feet hit the dirt. I knew whose they were. I wasn't dumb. A bolt came into my line of vision and I looked up to see Daryl.
I grabbed it by him and mumbled thanks before continuing to remove the bodies from the gate. After we had removed all the bodies Rick unlocked the gate and I walked in and shoved past everyone. They were going to interrogate me and I didn't want to deal with anyone right now.
I heard Daryl ask Rick if Sophia could stay at their house for the night. I never heard the answer but I knew Rick and I knew he would say yes. I walked into the house and placed my crossbow on the floor. I walked up the stairs and peeked into Sophia's room.
She was lying on her bed facing the window so she didn't see me when I walked in. I slowly sat down on the bed and she rolled over. Instantly a smile beamed across her face and wrapped her arms around me. I chuckled a little and wrapped my arms around her.
"Where did you go?" she asked me. I sighed and ran a hand through her hair. "I had to go out for a bit. I needed some air," I said. Sophia sat up. "You were gone the whole day yesterday and today!" she screeched. I knew she was upset. She didn't know what was going on.
I sighed again and pulled her into me while continuing to run a hand through her hair. "I know. I'm sorry. I just needed some space. You'll understand when you get older," I said. I kissed her forehead and ran my hand up and down her arm before standing up.
I heard the front door open and close and I quickly ran into the bedroom trying to avoid Daryl. I heard him telling Sophia that she was going to spend the night at Rick's to hang out with Carl. She quickly agreed. I heard the front door open and shut once again knowing Daryl took her down to Rick's.
I quickly made a dash downstairs and grabbed my crossbow. I ran back up the stairs. I grabbed some clothes for bed and made a mad dash to the bathroom. I was trying my hardest to avoid Daryl. I took my time getting ready for bed hoping that by the time I was done Daryl would already be asleep.
I changed and pulled my hair into a ponytail. I took a water bottle and poured some water over a wash cloth. I ran it over my face, chest, and arms, somewhat washing the dirt and walker blood off of me. I didn't smell any better but at least I looked a little better.
I sighed and rested my hands on the sink while looking in the mirror. My face was pale and I looked like I hadn't slept in about two months, which was honestly about the truth. I smacked the sink out of anger. I shouldn't be doing this. I shouldn't' be hiding in here like a coward.
I was now determined to talk to Daryl. I opened the door and walked straight into a brick wall. Okay, so it wasn't a brick wall. It was actually Daryl's chest. My eyes slowly trailed up his chest before connecting with his own eyes. I didn't know what to think.
I didn't know what emotion his eyes held. He looked hurt, pissed, angry, offended, maybe all of the above. I sighed and tried to walk past him but he quickly smacked his hand on the doorframe blocking me with his arm. I sighed again and took a slight step back.
"Daryl," I whispered. He shook his head and walked away. I quickly followed him. When I caught up he was sitting on our bed. I took a few cautious steps in front of him. He held out his hand and cocked an eyebrow at me. I could see the annoyance in his stare.
I started twisted the ring off my finger when Daryl's hands covered mine stopping me. "What are you doing?" he asked me softly. I wasn't expecting his voice to be so soft. I was expecting him to scream at me for being so stupid and running off. Daryl ran his thumb over the ring softly.
"I don't want it back," he said. He pulled me towards him lightly. His arms wrapped around my waist as he pulled me down in his lap where I was straddling his waist. I wrapped my arms loosely around his neck. Daryl tightened his grip around me before finally saying something.
"Why'd you run?" I knew that's what he was going to ask me. I looked around the room trying not to look at him. He grabbed my chin and forced me to look at him. I felt the tears forming in my eyes. "You were so happy when I told you about my dream," I whispered.
Daryl nodded slightly but you could tell by his face that he was still slightly confused. "I just assumed that you were upset because it made you think about me not being able to have kids," I said. Daryl shook his head. "Such a damn woman always is assuming things."
I couldn't help but chuckle a little. "I know. I can't help it," I said. I looked around the room again trying to avoid his stare that I felt burning into the side of my head. "What's on your mind?" he asked me. I sighed as I crawled off his lap and sat beside him.
"I just-I think. I...," my voice trailed off. I sighed again trying to collect my thoughts. "I just think I'm embarrassed for myself. I never thought I would be told I can't have kids. Even before the apocalypse and seeing you again I always thought that a guy would never want me again because I couldn't give what he wanted," I said in one big breath.
I watched a small smirk come across Daryl's face as I wiped some freshly fallen tears away. "What?" I asked him. He chuckled a little before taking my hands in his own. "I didn't come after you for your body," he said. I cocked an eyebrow at him not believing it.
"Okay, so at first I did, I'll admit it, but once I started talking to you. I found there was a lot more to you than just your looks," I felt myself blush. "I fell in love with your personality. Yes, granted I thought about us having kids together I'm not so worried about it now," I felt my eyebrow arch higher.
"I couldn't imagine having you pregnant in a world like this. You'd be fine at first but after a few months you wouldn't be able to fight. I would constantly be worried about you and let's not forget you'd be eating like a pig," I felt a laugh escape my mouth as I smacked his chest.
Daryl was laughing a little too. My hand was still on his chest. His hand came up and covered mine and then his face became serious. He looked deep into my eyes. "I'm okay with you not being able to have kids. Wanna know why?" he asked me with amusement in his voice.
"Why?" I asked him most likely already knowing the answer. Daryl pushed me back lightly on the bed and crawled over top of me. Yeah, I was right. Daryl bent down and kissed my lips lightly before pulling back. "I love you," I said. I felt his thumb run over the ring again.
I sighed as I watched his eyes turn darker and they were sparkling again. Daryl bent down and kissed me again. He pulled back once more and I bit my lip lightly watching him. He grabbed my left hand and brought it up to his mouth and kissed the ring. "Yeah I love you too......Mrs. Dixon."
