Chapter 30
So here's the answers to the questions I was asked!
@LoveZayn asked: "Do you have an instagram?" I do!! It's @ItsJessBaker I also have a tumblr! @Chupacabra94
@SadieCzerepak asked: "How did you come up with the idea to write this?" The funny thing about my writing is half of it comes from some crazy dreams I have. FTLOD is one of them. I think I was watching TWD one night and fell asleep with it on. I'm a very light sleeper so I could still hear it even though I wasn't watching and somehow this girl named Emery popped into my head and her story line just kind of blended in with it. I sat down the next morning and wrote out a little on Emery. What she looked like, how she acted, who she favored more of the group, things like that etc. and I just went from there.
Both @kealyssa and @toribaby514 asked: "You wrote an essay about Norman?" @kealyssa continued on to ask: "What did he say about it?" Yes, I wrote an essay about Norman! I gave him that along with a bag full of goodies! A wolf keychain, a rubber duck that has a statue of liberty costume on (for his bathtub :P), the convention accidentally printed off my photo op twice so I slid the extra copy in the bag, the essay and a two pound bag of sour patch kids! The lines were crazy so he didn't get to open the gift that much but he grabbed the sour patch kids and looked at it then at me and said 'is this food?' I said "it's a two pound bag of sour patch kids." He goes "holy balls!" he slid the bag to the side after that and started signing my stuff so I told him about the essay and he stopped and kinda looked back in the bag and then he smiled, not smirked, actually smiled, there were teeth!! And he said "Awesome, I can't wait to read it!" then he hugged me and I told him he saved my life and he smiled and cocked an eyebrow at me and I told him it was all in the essay and he said "Okay, I have to read it!" and then we went on to talk about other things!
Guys that was fun!! We should do it again! Hopefully I'll get more questions next time!!

"We need to split you two up. You guys have the quietest weapons," Rick said. I didn't make an effort to move towards him or Glenn. "Hell no," Daryl growled, "not after what happened the last time with Chinaman." Rick placed his hands on his hips.
"Then she can go with me," Rick stated simply. Daryl shook his head and tugged me towards him. "She's going with me. That's final," he said. Rick sighed a little before nodding. "Fine, you guys take the left side, we'll take the right. Meet back here in 30 minutes."
I barely nodded and followed behind Daryl. "What was that about?" I asked him once we were out of ear shot. He shrugged a little. "Somebody needs to cover your ass," I chuckled a little. "That somebody being you," I said. Daryl nodded as we came to the front of a store.
"Locked," I said while pulling on the door. Daryl grunted. "There's a couple ways of doing this," he said. I shrugged. "Whatever's faster," he said. I stepped back a little and let Daryl in front of me. I held up my crossbow ready for whatever was on the other side.
I heard multiple groans as Daryl kicked the door a couple times. "Dare, wait," I said while placing my hand on his arm. He stopped and looked back at me. I pointed towards the windows. Daryl leaned towards the one I was pointing towards and tapped on it lightly.
We both jumped back as we saw multiple pairs of hands thump against it. "Son of a bitch," Daryl growled. I watched as his chest heaved with every breath he took. I could tell it scared him a little. I let out a deep breath that I didn't even know I was holding.
"The window is small enough we could always take them out like that. They don't have the strength to climb. Take them out one by one Then I could pick the lock so it's quieter," I said. Daryl nodded and slung his crossbow on his back. We both looked at each and nodded.
We both opened the two smaller windows and we were instantly greeted by that awesome smell of rotting flesh. I coughed and took a few steps back. I felt Daryl's hand on my lower back. "You okay?" he asked. I nodded and wiped my mouth. "Peachy."
Daryl smirked and we walked back over to the windows. Being slow and cautious Daryl and I whistled and a few walkers instantly charged at the window. I started taking them down one by one shoving them to the side after I killed them so it would make more room for the others.
I put the last one down at my window as Daryl finished off the last couple at his. We stepped back to catch our breaths before whistling again. We waited again and nothing happened. We smirked a little. I wiped the blood off on my knife and bent down to the lock.
After hearing that familiar click I stood up and sheathed my knife. Daryl pushed me back a little. I held up my crossbow ready to take down whatever came our way. Daryl slowly twisted the door knob and let the door naturally come open. I coughed again at the smell.
Daryl took a few cautious steps in and I followed him. We stood back to back as we made our way through the store making sure nothing else was going to surprise us. Once the store was cleared we came back out into the main area. I kicked one of the now dead walkers.
"Well that was fun," I mumbled. Daryl smirked a little while starting to pack some supplies he found lying around. I sighed as I started grabbing other things on the side of the store. I turned around my arms full and noticed Daryl was frozen. His back was to me.
I slowly walked up and placed the stuff in the bag before looking around Daryl to see what he was staring at. I sighed when I noticed. I grabbed them from my hand and set them gently back on the broke shelf. I hopped up on the counter and looked at the ground.
"You won't need those," I mumbled. I heard Daryl's feet shuffle against the floor and then he was right in front of me. I still refused to look at him. "Why not? Are you," his voice trailed off. I shook my head and looked up at him but quickly looked back down when I noticed his stare.
"No, I'm not and I never will be," I said. Daryl's hands found my knees and he squeezed them gently. I looked up at him and I felt the tears trying to form in my eyes but I choked them back. "Why not?" he asked again. I sighed and bit my lip until I had an iron taste in my mouth.
"You don't need them you never will," I glanced over at the pack of condoms that were sitting on the shelf. I sighed and hopped down from the counter. "Just forget it," I mumbled while trying to walk past him. He gripped my arms and wouldn't let me move.
"Emery, why?" he asked again. I could hear the slight agitation in his voice. I pushed his hands off of me. "Daryl, I said forget it!" I said while bending down to pick up my crossbow. I felt his hand brush against my back but I shrugged him off and stood up.
I was shaking with anger at this point. I wanted to be done with this run and just get out of here. I started to walk away but I felt Daryl's hand on my shoulder holding me back. I growled. I knew I had to tell him. I couldn't hold it back much longer.
I turned around and looked up at him. His eyes were soft but I knew mine were filled with anger and hurt. "I can't have kids! There! Is that what you wanted to hear?! You don't need condoms! You never will as long as you're with me because I can't have fucking kids!"
I stalked past him and decided to check out the back of my store. I didn't hear his footsteps behind me and I was hoping he wasn't following me. I looked behind my shoulder to find myself alone and sighed leaning against the wall that was right inside the door.
I let the tears fall as I slid down the wall. I hated telling anyone that let alone him. People always looked at me like I was some sort of freak after I told them. When the first doctor told me the news I didn't believe him nor did my parents. We had gone to countless doctors over it.
They never really had the answers as to why I couldn't. They didn't know what had caused it either. All they could tell us was that my reproductive system didn't work properly. I went to doctors from the time I got out of high school until the world went to shit.
I sighed again as I heard the door squeak open. I knew it was Daryl. "Look I'm sorry. I shouldn't have gone off on you like that," I said. I stayed silent for a second. "Please say something," I whispered. I pushed myself off the wall and turned around to look at him.
My eyes grew wide as I came face to face with a walker. I went to reach for my crossbow but the walker fell on me and we went crashing to the floor. I couldn't reach my crossbow and my arms were pinned so I couldn't get my knife. This walker was huge and I was crushed by its weight.
"Daryl, help!" I screamed. I tried fighting it off but it was so much stronger than me. I tried wiggling out from under it but it only made it more anger and I felt it's fingers grasp the fabric on the jacket I was wearing. It was definitely getting too close for comfort.
"Daryl!" I screamed again. It seemed like every time I screamed the air was crushed out of me even more. I kicked the walker in the leg and it hissed while falling on me even heavier. Damn it, this was definitely not working at all. I felt its teeth graze my neck.
I screamed not liking the feeling of it almost having me for a snack. I growled while shoving on it. I wasn't going to let it win but it seemed like it already had. It snapped its teeth at me again and blood mixed with spit was running out of its rotten mouth.
I cringed as I felt it run down my neck. This was freaking disgusting. I continued to struggle under it. My eyes were shut as I began to accept my fate. Suddenly the walker dead weighted on me and it was no longer fighting with me. I opened my eyes and was met by the walkers face.
I groaned as I tried to shove the walker off of me. I felt the weight being lifted off of me and I was instantly met by a very pissed off looking Daryl. I crawled backwards as I watched him kick and stab the already dead walker some more. I brought my knees to my chest and buried my head.
I tried to slow my breathing as I flinched away from the hand on my shoulder. I knew it was Daryl this time. He sat heavily beside me as I turned my head to face him. "Are you okay?" he asked while grabbing my arms and looking me over for bites and scratches.
I could now feel myself shaking from the adrenaline and being scared. Daryl pulled me into him and I sighed. I didn't want to cry but that was a close one. Daryl ran his hand up and down my arm. "When?" he asked me quietly. I knew what he was getting at.
When did I figure out I couldn't have kids? I sighed and shifted a little too look at him. "A couple days after we graduated. Mom and dad figured out we weren't so innocent," Daryl chuckled a little and squeezed my arm. I ran a hand through my hair.
"They instantly started to freak out because their straight A never does anything wrong perfect daughter wasn't so perfect anymore. Mom instantly took me to the doctor to try to get me on protection but I guess you have to go through tests before they give it to you to make sure it won't injure you in any way," my voice trailed off a little.
Daryl rubbed his hand up and down my arm trying to comfort me. "The doctor came back in about 15 minutes later and told my mom we could still put me on it if it made me feel better but there wasn't really a need. Then he went on to explain what the tests showed."
I leaned my head of Daryl's shoulder. "I'm sorry," he whispered, "that sucks." I wiped my eyes and chuckled a little. "Funny thing is that I thought it sucked too. Now I'm kind of glad that it happened." Daryl cocked his eyebrow slightly. "Whys that?" he asked.
I chuckled again. "Could you imagine us having a kid together? Let alone in this type of world?" Daryl chuckled this time. "We'd have a little ass kicker," he said. I felt a smile creep across my face. "That we would," I said. I sighed thinking about the possibility of kids.
"He'd have your eyes," I said. Daryl squeezed me a little. "She'd have your smile and your personality," he said. I reached up and latched onto his hand. "He'd have your hunting and tracking skills." "She'd have your laugh." I squeezed his hand as the air fell thick with silence as we sat in our own thoughts. Daryl squeezed my hand this time.
"Sometimes I wish the apocalypse never happened," I said. Daryl grunted a little. I didn't know how to take that. "I do," he said. I slowly looked over at him. "Why?" I asked slightly confused. "This....whatever this is brought us back together," he whispered.
I sighed a little and nodded in agreement. "You were the first person to pop into my mind when shit hit the fan," he said. I looked over at him. "Why?" I asked. Daryl smirked a little. "I knew you couldn't fend for yourself," I nudged him a little.
"Jerk," I mumbled. He cracked a smile. "I loved you. I love you," he corrected himself. "Merle was so drugged up he didn't know where we were going so I drove by your house and looked for you but you were already gone. Figured you were heading towards Atlanta like everyone else."
I nodded slightly. "So much for that," I said. Daryl chuckled. We heard the door open and we both jumped up grabbing our weapons. Rick and Glenn both walked in with confused yet slightly amused looks on their faces. "Ready to go?" Rick asked slowly.
Daryl and I looked at each other and nodded before following out behind them. We quickly grabbed the couple bags we had packed with supplies over our backs and walked out the door. Daryl pushed me in front of him slightly and I felt his hand on the small of my back.
Daryl and I stopped to drop our full bags into the car and shut it before following Glenn and Rick into the store they were previously in. They were in charge of grabbing boards for the gate. We teamed up and started walking the boards back out to the car.
Rick suddenly stopped causing Glenn to run into him. "Go back. Go back!" Rick whispered harshly as he tried to push his way back in. The three of us backed up and once Rick was in he shut the door quietly and placed all the boards under the door knob.
Daryl pulled me towards him. "What's going on?" Glenn asked. Daryl and I slowly crept towards the windows to look out. I couldn't even count how many walkers were shuffling through the town. I gasped as I crouched down by the window so I wouldn't be noticed.
I crept back over to Rick and Glenn. "We obviously can't take them all on," I whispered. "They're coming from the direction of the housing edition. The nice thing is that we won't have to deal with them when we get back," Glenn said. He's always looking on the bright side of things.
I sighed and sat back on the floor. Might as well make myself comfortable we were going to be here for a while. Daryl huffed and sat beside me. I looked around. "At least there's food," I whispered. Glenn cracked a smile. "I'm gonna go check to make sure the back is all shut up and secure," Rick said.
Glenn followed behind him. I sighed and leaned back on my hands. "We're gonna be here a while," I whispered to Daryl. He grunted. I looked around the store. "Hey, I know this place," I said. Daryl grunted again. "Are you just pointing out the obvious?" Daryl retorted.
I stuck my tongue out at him. Daryl stood up quietly and offered me a hand. I took it and he pulled me up. "We could check out the roof," I whispered. Daryl nodded slightly and grabbed our crossbows off the floor handing mine to me. We made our way to the stairs and started climbing. "Just like old times," I thought.
