"Again," Daryl said while pulling my bolts from the tree I was shooting at. It had been a two weeks since we moved into the housing addition. Everyone seemed to be in better spirits. Daryl on the other hand not so much. He was in such a sour mood.
I sighed and loaded my crossbow again with ease. I had started gaining muscle from pulling the string back so many times. I sighed and peered into the scope. I let out a breath and pulled the trigger. I watched as the bolt sunk into the tree where it had so many times before.
I smirked a little as I rested the crossbow against my side. Daryl stalked over to the tree and ripped the bolt out. "Again," he growled. I sat the crossbow gently on the ground and shook my head. "Dare, I've shot at least 20 times and I know I've hit more than half."
Daryl scoffed. "Ya need to hit all of them. More than half isn't enough," Daryl said while laying the bolts at my feet. I pulled the string back again and loaded another bolt. I looked down through the scope again and pulled the trigger. The bolt landed in the same spot once again.
I rested the crossbow in my hands and looked up at Daryl. He was standing with his hands on his hips. I back on the dirt and ran a hand through my hair. I opened up a bottle of water and took a sip before offering it to Daryl. He snatched it from my hands and started chugging it.
"Are you okay?" I asked him. He finished off the water and threw the bottle across the yard. He grunted before picking up his crossbow. He didn't even look at the tree as he pulled the trigger. I watched as the bolt sunk in not far from the spot I was aiming at.
I didn't know if he was trying to show off or if he was just in a bad mood. He sat down in front of me afterwards and placed his crossbow beside him. "I'm fine," he said. I shook my head. "Something's wrong," I said. He stood up and slung his crossbow over his shoulder.
He offered a hand to me and I took it. After pulling me up he walked back into our house. He grabbed the keys to his truck and walked out the front door. He was practically dragging me behind him. "Daryl, stop," I said while yanking my arm from his grasp.
He stopped abruptly and turned around to face me. "Let's go," he said. I cocked an eyebrow at him. "Where are we going?" I asked him. I watched his jaw set and his fists. He sighed and ran a hand through his hair tugging on it lightly. "Please just get in the truck, Em."
I looked down at my boots running the toe of it through the dirt before looking back up at him. His eyes looked sad like he was pleading me. I nodded and followed him. Nobody else was around. I already had my knife and my crossbow was on my back.
Daryl hopped in his truck and I unlocked the gate. He quickly drove out and I locked the gate behind him. He stopped and I jumped in. I had no clue where we were going. He was quiet and biting on his thumb nail nervously again. It was awkwardly quiet between us.
Daryl these past two weeks, I had no clue what was going on with him. Every time someone would say something to him he would snap. He wasn't really physical with me at all and he slept in another room or stayed up all night and slept during the day.
I heard the door slam to the house and footsteps up the stairs. Daryl flung the bedroom door open. I was sitting on my bed cleaning my crossbow and bolts from the hunt we had just went on. Daryl seemed to be on edge lately and I didn't know what had gotten into him.
Daryl grabbed his bag and walked out of the room. I had stopped midway through cleaning one of my bolts and looked at the door he had just walked out of. I sighed and stood up. I found Daryl in the guest bedroom lying on the bed with his hands above his head.
I walked in and stood beside the bed. "What's wrong?" I asked him. He didn't move. He didn't even make a sound towards me. I ran a hand through my hair and crossed my arms. "Dare, I don't know what's going on with you lately. You seem to be on edge."
Daryl grunted. "Did someone in the group do something?" Daryl didn't say anything. "Did I do anything?" I asked. Daryl turned on his side his back facing me. I sighed and sat on the edge of the bed. I placed my hand on Daryl's shoulder and he shrugged me off.
I sighed again. "Daryl, I-sometimes I don't know what's going on in that head of yours. I don't think I will ever understand. Whatever someone else did or whatever I did, I'm sorry, but don't pull yourself away. You always do this," Daryl grunted again and barely rolled over to look at me.
"Get out," he said. I looked at him a little bit confused. "Get out," he said again while sitting up. I stood up off the bed and took a couple steps back. Daryl got off the bed. "Get out," he said once more while pointing towards the door. I backed up a little and felt myself hit a wall.
Daryl growled and closed the distance between us. "Emery, get out," he said. He was so close I could feel his body shaking with anger. His fist rose up and I flinched while closing my eyes. I heard a thud and I knew he had hit the wall beside me.
I slid out the door and Daryl followed. I looked at him with sadness in my eye. "Don't do this," I whispered. Daryl placed a hand on the door. He looked up at me as if he wanted to say something else. He shook his head slammed the door in my face.
I sighed thinking about that fight we had last week. Daryl and I didn't speak to each other since then. Even though we had went shooting together he didn't talk at all. Today was the first day he had spoken to me. He was still rude and I wanted to cringe at the harshness in his voice.
Daryl shifted uncomfortably in his seat. He didn't look my way. He didn't talk to me. He was silent. "Where are we going?" I asked finally breaking the silence. Daryl glanced at me out of the corner of his eye before looking back at the road. I guess I wasn't getting an answer.
"Daryl," my voice trailed off. I didn't want to make him even madder. Daryl's truck rolled to a stop and looked out the window. "Why are we here?" I asked. Daryl didn't bother answering before he hopped out of his truck crossbow in hand. I sighed and followed him.
Daryl ran up the shabby front porch and slid his hand around the side of the door frame before he pulled back with a key in hand. He unlocked the door and we stepped inside. Daryl shut and locked the door behind me. I followed him as he walked around the house.
His crossbow was held at the ready as he searched the house. I had no clue why we were here, in Daryl's old house. I guess he needed to see it again. The house was clear, spotless, nothing in it. Daryl walked up the stairs and I followed behind. He was faster though.
When I finally caught up to him he was in his old room. He was sitting on his bed facing the window. I sat my crossbow on the ground and leaned against the wall. I heard Daryl mumble something inaudible and then he looked back at me as if expecting an answer.
I arched an eyebrow at him. He shook his head and turned his back to me again. I walked a little into the room. I kept my space though I didn't know what kind of a mood Daryl was in. "Why?" I heard Daryl ask. I felt my eyebrows pull together in confusion.
"Why what?" I asked. Daryl turned to face me. "Why did you do it?" he asked. I felt my eyebrows pull together even more. "What the hell are you talking about ?" I asked him. He was either playing games or all hell was about to break loose. He groaned.
"Why did you cheat on me?" Daryl asked his voice raised a little. He stood up from the bed and started pacing the floor. I scoffed. "What the fuck are you talking about? I never cheated on you? Is this seriously why you're in a foul mood?! Because you think I cheated on you?!"
"I don't think I know!" Daryl yelled. I tried stopping him by placing a hand on his shoulder but he shrugged me off. "How do you know I did?" I asked him. I could hear the anger forming in my voice. "So you're admitting to it?!" Daryl stopped to look at me.
He looked like hurt but yet looked like he could rip me apart at any second. I shook my head. "No, I'm not. I never cheated on you," I whispered. Daryl growled. I looked at the floor not even wanting to deal with him. I heard Daryl growl again and then a crash.
I looked up to see Daryl had kicked over a chair in his room. "This is seriously why you've been an ass these past two weeks?! Because of something that didn't happen, let alone didn't happen six year ago! Really Daryl?! Where is all this coming from?!"
I watched as Daryl chest heaved up and down from breathing so hard. I knew the rage was building up again. He pinned me between the wall and himself. "Admit that you fucking cheated on me," Daryl said between clenched teeth. I swallowed hard feeling nervous.
I shook my head. "I can't do that," I said. Daryl growled and slammed both fists against the wall before backing up. "You're lying to me. You're lying to me right now!" Daryl screamed. I felt so tiny compared to him right now. I had no clue what was going on.
"Merle said you would! Merle said you would break up with me or cheat on me! That I was nothing but redneck trash! A girl like you wouldn't want me! He was right and you did both!" Ah, it was all starting to click now but now I was really mad.
"Really Daryl?! You're going to believe something that your brother told you?! Something that isn't even true! Merle hated me! He didn't want me around! Of course he would say something like that!" I watched as Daryl's face softened a little but I didn't let him speak. I was fuming at this point.
"What about me, huh?! Listening to your brother tell me that he didn't like me! Telling me that you would get what you wanted and then leave me like yesterday trash. He always told me that you were never one for loving and shit that you would fuck me and leave me!"
Daryl's face had hardened again. "I had more faith in you than that! I knew you were better than that! I knew that you didn't want to be like your ass of a brother and your drunken dead beat dad! I guess I was wrong though because you are exactly like them!"
Daryl pointed a finger at me. "Don't do that! Don't you fucking compare me to them!" I threw my hands in the air. "I don't have too! It's obvious!" Daryl's voice was raised and so was mine. Is this what he brought me here for? To fight? I hated this.
Daryl growled. "I am nothing like them! Don't say that!" I didn't know if he was hurt or angry. Maybe a little of both. "Daryl, listen to yourself right now. You're bringing up things that didn't happen six years ago! Merle is controlling you! He's causing drama and he's not even here!"
Daryl ignored me. He went over to his dressers and started digging through them. Clothes and other miscellaneous things were flying everywhere. I had no clue what he was doing. "I don't believe you at all! Merle knew, I knew you would do this!" he didn't even bother to turn around.
"Nobody wants me! Why couldn't you just leave me alone! You shouldn't have come after me! You wouldn't be in this situation! I wouldn't be in this situation! We were fine not knowing each other in high school! But no you couldn't leave it alone!"
He finally turned around and threw something at me. I barely dodged it as it hit the wall behind me. I looked up at him. The anger in his eyes had now turned to sadness. He looked like he could break down at any second. He pointed at whatever he threw at me.
I looked down to see a small box. I bent down and picked it up. It seemed like my whole body had shut down as I opened it revealing a ring. I looked up at Daryl. I could feel the tears in my eyes. "I loved you. I fucking loved you and you ripped my heart out and stomped on it," he whispered.
He collapsed and sat back down on the bed with his back to me. His head was in his hands. I looked back down at the ring. I didn't know what to think. I didn't know what to say. I felt completely numb but I felt my feet carrying me towards Daryl.
I stood in front of him. I placed a hand on his shoulder. Daryl stiffened under my touch before finally looking up at me. I grabbed his hand and opened it placing the box back in his hands. "Nobody wants me. I'm just redneck trash," Daryl said while looking at the ring in his hands.
I sighed and ran a hand through his hair. His eyes connected with mine. "I never cheated on you. It was just Merle talking a bunch of shit. I broke up with you because of the fights and everything. I couldn't take it anymore. It was unhealthy and everyone said you would break my heart."
Daryl looked back down at the ring. "I did what I always do when I'm scared. I ran. I was afraid that what Merle said was true. You were just going to get what you wanted and leave me. I didn't want to believe him but I guess he got to me and I was scared."
Daryl looked up at me again. "I'm sorry," he whispered. I ran a hand through his hair again. "We're both at fault," I said. Daryl nodded slowly. I sat down beside him on the bed. It was silent between us for a bit. "Is it true?" I asked him. Daryl looked over at me and cocked an eyebrow.
"What?" he asked. I looked down at the now closed box in his hands. "You loved me?" I asked him. Daryl looked down at the ring before looking up at me and shaking his head. "No," he said. I felt my face fall a little bit. He opened the box revealing the ring again.
"I did love you," I looked over at him and his eyes connected with me. "I do love you. I never stopped loving you," Daryl said. He held the ring up in my line of vision. "I had a completely different way of doing this six years ago," Daryl whispered.
I felt a chuckle escape my lips. "I know we can't get married but do me the honor and wear it," he said while pulling the ring out of the box. I suddenly felt like such a girly girl. I nodded not being able to speak. Daryl smirked and slid the ring on my left ring finger.
I held out my hand to get a better look. It fit perfectly. "It was my mother's," Daryl said while grabbing my hand and running his thumb over the ring. I looked up at him. "I can't tak-," Daryl interrupted me. "I want you to have it. She would want you to have it."
I nodded while looking back down at it. "It is beautiful," I said. I heard Daryl chuckle a little. "It's been in our family for years. She never had a girl. She would've loved you," I leaned my head on his shoulder. His mother was a sore subject. Hell, his whole family was.
He squeezed my hand and I shifted so I could look at him. We stared at each other for a few seconds before he leaned in and kissed me softly. I sighed and ran a hand through his hair as we fell back on the bed. Daryl shifted so I was now on top of him as his hands found my hips.
Daryl leaned up to kiss me again. I sighed as his hands ran up and down my back. He pulled back again and I groaned such a tease. Daryl brought a hand up and caressed my cheek. "I love you," he said. I smiled a little and leaned into his hand. "I love you too," I whispered back.
Daryl smiled for once before connecting our lips again. His fingers found the hem of my shirt and he started pulling on it until he pulled it over my head. His hands ran up and down my sides making goose bumps rise on my skin. I grabbed the bottom of Daryl's shirts. We were about to do some unmentionable things.
