--

When I woke up the next time I knew it was morning. How? Daryl was gone. I sighed and stretched before getting up and quickly dressing. I ran a hand through my hair and threw my black beanie on my head. My hands froze on it after I slid it on my head.

I've had this beanie cap since I was in high school. Now six years later and being 24 you would figure I would get rid of it but I never did. I stepped out of the tent and the sun was the first thing to hit me. I smiled as I accepted the warmth and smiled.

The group was sitting around the small fire they had built. Everyone gave me small smiles and murmured "mornings." I sat down beside Carl who looked like he could fall asleep again at any minute. I ruffled his hair causing him to glare at me. I smirked before turning my attention to the group.

Daryl was missing. I looked around the group and behind them. I tried not to show it on my face that I was a tad worried. "He's hunting," Carl said to me. I ruffled his hair again without even looking at him. I looked up to see Dale sitting on top of his RV taking watch.

I sighed and stood up. There was a lot on my mind and there was no better person to talk to than Dale. He was like the father I wish I had. When Daryl and I first joined the group Dale automatically knew there was something going on between us whether good or bad.

There were many nights him and I would talk while keeping watch about the way things used to be. He always asked me if Daryl was that mean and he was always surprised when I told him no. Which that led into countless stories of the nice things Daryl used to do.

It didn't take Dale long to figure out about Daryl's father. He said it was pretty obvious whether Daryl told anyone or not. His attitude said it all. I slowly climbed the ladder and was automatically greeted by Dale's smiling face. Somehow he was always in a good mood.

"What's up, kid?" he asked in greeting. I smiled at his choice of words. I definitely wasn't a kid. I plopped down beside him. "What's on your mind?" I sighed and looked up at him. "Did you and your wife ever break up when you were together?" I asked him.

I think he was a little taken back by the question. His face contorted a little before speaking. "A few times, why?" he asked. I shook my head. "Just wondering," he looked at me with confusion in his eyes. "Is this about a certain redneck?" he asked me teasingly.

I chuckled. Dale wasn't stupid. He knew everything. I broke our gaze before nodding. I heard him chuckle a little before patting my shoulder lightly. "What's going on, dear?" I looked back up. "He's just being...Daryl," Dale laughed this time causing us to get looks from the group.

"What's going on?" he asked me. I leaned my head against his leg. "He's just being complicated and messing with me," I said. Dale settled one of hands on my back and rubbed it trying to comfort me. "What do you want?" Dale asked me softly.

I sighed. "Obviously it's not what he wants," I mumbled. I heard Dale chuckle again. I didn't have a clue on what was so funny about this. "Have you asked him that?" I sat there for a few seconds before groaning causing Dale to chuckle. "That's what I thought. You need to talk to him," he said.

I sighed. "I guess you're right," I said. He smiled down at me. "I'm always right," he beamed at me. I rolled my eyes. "Yeah yeah," I waved him off. "Now's your chance," he said while looking over my head. I followed his gaze to see Daryl walking into camp carrying a deer over his shoulder.

"Dammit," I breathed. I stood up and looked down at Dale. He simply nodded towards the ladder and put on a smile. I groaned as I made my way down the ladder. I took slow, small steps back towards the group. Shane and Rick were now standing over to deer gutting it.

I looked around the group to see Daryl walking away. Now where could he be going? I sighed and decided to follow after him. I ignored the stares I was getting from the group. I made sure my pocket knife was in my back pocket before heading in the direction Daryl went.

I found him kneeling down by the creek and was most likely washing the blood off of his hands. I slowly crept towards him. I cringed when a twig snapped under my foot and I was instantly met by Daryl's crossbow. I arched an eyebrow at him. "I know you don't like me but that's no reason to kill me," I teased. He instantly dropped his crossbow.

"You just have a death wish, don't you," he said while turning back to the creek. I rolled my eyes at him. "Not my fault you're so jumpy," I said while sitting down beside him. He looked at me out of the corner of his eye. "You shouldn't be out here," he said.

I rolled my eyes at him. "Neither should you," I said. He scoffed. "There's a difference between you and me," I swear to God if he says it's because I'm a woman I will never speak to him again. "I can protect myself. That flimsy pocket knife won't do anything."

I looked down at the pocket knife that I was now using to draw in the dirt. "It could get me by," I grumbled. He scoffed again and sat back beside me. "You didn't come out here to argue with me," he stated. I stopped drawing and looked up at him.

I turned my attention back to my makeshift drawing of a walker. I "stabbed" it between the eyes before answering. "No," I said. It stayed silent between us after that. "Well," he said. I looked over at him. "Out with it," he said. I sighed not even knowing where to begin.

Actually I did know where to begin I just didn't want too. I looked over at him. He was just staring at me with a slightly confused yet agitated look on his face. It was actually pretty attractive. I sighed again and ran a hand over my face. "What's wrong?" he asked me.

I looked over at him and didn't even think about it. I grabbed the back of his neck and pulled him towards me connecting his lips with mine. He was a little shocked at first then he started kissing back. After a few minutes he pulled back and looked at me with confusion in his eyes again.

"What was that for?" he asked while trying to catch his breath. I shook my head as if trying to get the kiss out of my mind. It definitely wasn't going anywhere any time soon. "I've told you how I felt, but you haven't told me anything," I whispered.

His eyebrows pulled together as he looked over at me. "Is this still bothering you?" he asked. I sighed and nodded before looking at him again. "Well I," he was suddenly cut off by a twig snapping behind us. Daryl quickly stood up and pointed his crossbow in that direction.

We both held our breath for what seemed like forever before a walker stepped into few. Okay one walker no big deal. Suddenly another popped out from behind the tree. Well damn. Daryl pushed me behind him. He was about to take one down when he suddenly froze.

It was like Daryl to freeze or become scared. I peeked around his shoulder to see about 60 walkers heading towards us and camp. "Fuck," Daryl cursed quietly while pushing me back a little. "We have to get back to camp and warn the others," I said.

Daryl shook his head. "There's no time," he turned around and pointed at the tree behind us before boosting me up. "Climb," he didn't have to tell me twice. I quickly climbed the tree and felt him close behind me. "Keep going," he said. I climbed as far as I possibly could.

I stopped and sat down on a branch. I was covered by the leaves and the branch was easy to sit on without losing my balance. Daryl was quickly beside me. I watched below as walkers stumbled past us. I felt a small cry escape my lips and Daryl looked over at me.

He quickly threw an arm around me and pulled me towards him. I buried my head in his chest. That's when the gun shots started. I covered my ears not wanting to hear any of it. Daryl ran a hand through my hair and held me close. "Shh, it's okay," he whispered.

I could barely hear him over the gun shots and the now screams. I shuddered hearing them. I couldn't tell who it was. I felt Daryl stiffen at them too. I wrapped my arms around his waist while we waited. After minutes of waiting the gun shots stopped.

I pulled back and looked up at Daryl. He wiped away a couple of my tears with his thumb. "We have to go back," he whispered. I nodded. I felt sick to my stomach. Daryl grabbed his crossbow and quickly jumped down. I watched him intently as he searched the area.

"It's clear," he said. He turned around and held out his arms. I jumped down and quickly took out my pocket knife. I don't care what he says it made me feel a little better. Plus it gave me something to grip because right now I was really nervous.

I looked up at Daryl and he had that same worry in his eyes that I did. I heard a growl and before Daryl could turn around a walker had ahold of his and was about to take a bite out of him. Not on my watch. I quickly flicked out the blade and stabbed the walker in the head.

It stopped fighting and fell limp at our feet. My breathing was fast and I really didn't feel good at this point. That was my first kill. Daryl took the knife from my shaky hand. He wiped the blood off on the walker's shirt. He closed it and stuck it in his pocket.

He walked beside me as we quickly made our way back to camp. When we arrived we saw everyone sort of scattered all over the place. I looked around and did a head count and it seemed like everyone was there. I didn't see anyone missing. The women had their children while the men had their guns ready.

I felt Daryl wrap an arm around me and pull me close. I somehow felt safe even though there were multiple dead walker bodies surrounding us. I sighed into Daryl's shirt and wrapped my arms around his waist. "Remember what we were talking about earlier?" I heard him ask me through a mumble. I nodded. I felt his hand run through my hair before tugging on it lightly.

I looked up at him with a confused look and nodded again. He was silent for a few minutes while he held my gaze. He leaned down and placed a soft kiss on my lips. I was shocked especially with the others around. He pulled back and placed his forehead on mine. He tightened his grip around me. "You're not leaving my side. As far as I'm concerned it's just you and me." I smiled as he connected his lips with mine again.
