Chapter 12

I woke up the next morning to no Daryl beside me. I sighed and looked around the room. My shirt was thrown over the lamp and my pants were thrown across the couch. I sighed again and ran a hand over my face. I heard the shower running and decided to be nosey.

I wrapped the sheet around me and walked into the bathroom. "Dare?" I questioned. I heard him grunt and rolled my eyes. I closed the bathroom door behind me as I stepped in. I let the sheet drop and opened the door to the shower. I stepped in beside him as he eyed me.

"What are you doing?" he asked while looking down at me. I stepped closer and wrapped my arms around his waist. "Going easy on the hot water," I said while kissing his lips lightly. He cupped my face in his hands and deepened the kiss. I tugged lightly on his bottom lip as I pulled back.

He looked down at me with disappointment in his eyes. I chuckled and grabbed the shampoo. I ran it through his hair and massaged his scalp lightly. He leaned into my hands and smiled. After I was done he turned around with his back to me and put his head under the water.

I watched his movements as he stood under the water. The muscles on his back moved and flexed every time he moved his arms. I sighed and looked at his tattoos. Two devils he got on his right shoulder blade when we were freshly out of high school. His muscles and tattoos weren't what drew me to his back though. Looking at his back brought back memories.

Daryl and I were down at the lake near his house doing unmentionable things. If my parents had caught us I'd be a dead girl and I would never be able to see him again. I tried to catch my breath as Daryl lay heavily beside me. He intertwined our fingers together.

It was quiet between us. This is how it usually went. We'd do what we wanted to each other then we would fall silent. Daryl sat up and grabbed his boxers and slid them on. I followed suit and put my bra and underwear on. Daryl offered a hand to me but I didn't take it.

He arched an eyebrow. "I didn't hurt you, did I?" he asked with a little concern his voice. I shook my head. "No, I just don't want to get up just yet," I said while throwing an arm over my head trying to block the sun. I heard Daryl move towards me.

Suddenly I was cradled against his body and he was carrying me. I heard the slosh of the water as he walked into it. "Daryl," I said while latching my arms around his neck, "I don't want to get wet." Daryl chuckled and looked down at me. "You're already wet," I groaned and smacked his chest at the dirty joke causing him to smirk.

"Daryl, put me down," he continued to walk further out and I could feel my feet touching the water and I gasped at the coldness of it. "Daryl you better let me go dammit," I said. Daryl smirked. "Okay," and like that I was in the freezing cold water. I came back up sputtering water.

"Dick," I said while splashing him. He smirked and opened his mouth but I splashed him again before he could make another dirty joke. He made his way towards me and I tried to move back but it was hard being in the water. I squealed as Daryl's arms wrapped around my waist.

"I'm soaked right now because of you," I said into his chest. He chuckled and kissed my neck. "Oh baby. I know you are," he mumbled against my skin. I groaned at myself for walking into that trap. He bit down lightly on my skin causing me to gasp and push him back playfully.

I splashed him again and I left him there spitting out water as I made my way back to the shore. He followed shortly after and pushed me on the ground. I glared up at him as he crawled on top of me. He kissed me lightly before pulling back and pushing his nose into my neck and breathing in my scent.

I giggled as his breath tickled against my neck. "We should probably go," he mumbled against my neck before kissing it again. He pulled back and looked at me. "Before Merle suspects something," I rolled my eyes at the thought of Merle worrying about us.

Daryl rolled off of me and started getting dressed. I slowly got dressed and threw his backpack over my shoulder. I looked over to see him dressed but he kept his shirt off draping it over his shoulders. He smirked once he noticed my eyes dancing over his body.

Daryl tried to take his backpack from me but I wouldn't let him. "No way," I said while grabbing ahold of the straps. Daryl cocked an eyebrow but sighed. He knew what I wanted. He turned around and squatted down a little as I jumped on his back. I wrapped my arms around his neck and leaned forward to kiss his cheek. He surprised me when he turned so I caught his lips. I smiled and pulled back and rested my chin on his shoulder.

The Georgia heat had made his skin warm to the touch but it felt nice. I sighed as I closed his eyes. "You better not fall asleep," Daryl grumbled. I chuckled and kissed his bare shoulder. "Now why would I do that?" I questioned him. I ran a hand through his now wet hair pushing it out of his face.

He kissed my other hand that was in front of him. "It wouldn't be the first time," he mumbled. I chuckled and kissed his shoulder again feeling the heat of his skin. I lifted my head and looked at Daryl's back. I could see the scars. Some were worse than others.

I ran a finger over one of the faint scars and I felt Daryl tense under my touch. I frowned and leaned forward. I wound my arms back around him and squeezed him tightly. I felt his thumb run over my leg showing he was grateful that I had stopped. I felt bad for him but I would never tell him that.

"Daryl," I whispered. He stiffened again knowing I wasn't going to let it go. He let me go and I dropped to the ground. He turned around to face me. His jaw was tight and his lips were in a firm hard line. I went to reach for him but he flinched back. I knew I had touched a sore spot with him.

"Daryl," I whispered again. He shook his head and took a step back. "Don't," he growled while pointing at me, "don't act like you care!" I sighed and took a small cautious towards him. I was thankful that he stayed where he was. I placed my hand on his cheek lightly.

He flinched at first but relaxed a little. I could see the sadness in his eyes. It hurt me to see him like this. "I care," I whispered catching his eye with mine. At first the hurt expression stayed on his face but he softened and placed his hand on top of mine.

"I know, baby girl, I know," he gave me a weak smile. Well it was better than nothing. I closed the gap between us and lightly kissed him. He pulled back dropped our hands while intertwining our fingers together. We walked in silence after that.

As Daryl's house came into view I felt him stiffen. I looked up and I stopped dead in my tracks. Daryl's dad's truck was sitting in the driveway. "Fuck," I heard Daryl curse under his breath. I tightened my grip on his hand. He looked over at me and I could see the fear in his eyes. I slid Daryl's backpack off of my shoulders and started rummaging through it.

"What are you doing?" I heard him ask while bending down beside me. I continued digging through his bag until I found his truck keys. I tossed them to him and he cocked an eyebrow at me. I just shook my head not wanting to explain. I always put his keys in there if we went somewhere just in case his dad came home. Daryl always tried to keep me away from him.

Daryl grabbed my hand and we slowly made our way to his house. "When I say run, go to the truck," I nodded slightly as we approached the house. Luckily no one was on the front porch. I looked over at Daryl who was on edge. "Run!" we both took off towards his truck.

We quickly got in and he drove off. I looked in one of the side mirrors to see Daryl's dad coming out of the house, but luckily we were far enough away that he wouldn't even bother to come after us. He was probably too drunk to stay awake much longer. We had no clue what happened to Merle. He most likely jumped out a window and went down the street.

"What are you thinking about?" Daryl's voice brought me back to reality. I didn't even remember what had happened before that. It felt like I was thinking about the past for hours when really it was only a few minutes. Daryl had stayed at our house that night. My parents weren't fans of it until I talked to them privately and told them what was going on. After that they loved Daryl and didn't care when he stayed over. If only they knew what we were doing when he stayed over or vice versa.

Daryl turned his back to me again and I came face to face with his scars again. I sighed and wrapped my arms around him from behind. He jumped a little at first but then relaxed and squeezed my hands lightly before continuing to rinse conditioner out of his hair. I looked at all the scars that were scattered across his back. I brought a hand up and traced one slowly. I felt Daryl stiffen after he figured out what I was doing.

I kissed it softly before moving onto the next one. I continued kissing the ones on his back before he turned around and I noticed the ones on his chest. How did I not notice these before? I kissed them too and looked up at Daryl who was looked down at me.

I looked back down and kissed a couple more. Daryl's hands made their way to my hair where he tugged backwards on it lightly so I would look at him. I looked up expecting him to be mad but his eyes were connected with mine and his lips soon followed.

I sighed as I ran hands up and down his back. Soon he became more dominating and pushed me against the shower wall and pressed himself into me. I moaned as he tugged on my hair again this time harder. He hands wandered down my body all over and mine went in his hair.

He lifted me up and I wrapped my legs around his waist. He pressed himself into me completely causing us both to moan. I swear we were going to sex again right then and there until a knock on the door out in the room interrupted. Daryl pulled back abruptly but kept his forehead on mine.

"Dammit," he breathed. I giggled and kissed him lightly. I untangled myself from him and got out of the shower. "You continue to shower. I got the door," I said. I quickly got dressed in something comfy and made my way out of the bathroom. The knock came louder this time.

"Damn, calm your tits," I mumbled under my breath. I moved my wet hair out of my face and opened the door. There stood Rick with a panicked look on his face. "Pack your shit. We're getting out of here," I had never heard Rick like this before. "What's going on?" I asked.

Rick sighed. He really didn't look like he wanted to explain but knew he had too. "The CDC generators are gonna run out of fuel in 30 minutes. After that this place is gonna blow," he said. I felt my eyes become wide with the more he talked. He looked behind me with a slight shocked expression.

"I'll let you pack but hurry up," Rick slammed the door. I had no clue what he was looking at but when I turned around I knew. There was Daryl standing in a new pair of jeans with no shirt on and his hair was wet and clinging to his face. "Great give them something else to talk about," I mumbled while walking past him to grab all the stuff from the bathroom.

I came back out and dumped it on the bed and started packing my bag. Daryl's didn't ask any questions as he started packing beside me. Obviously he caught most of the conversation. "So much for the place," Daryl grumbled while zipping up his bag.

I sighed and slung mine over my shoulder. "You were the one that said we were safe for now," I said while walking towards the door. I felt Daryl behind me. I didn't need to turn around to know he was there. Right when we got to the room where everyone was at the door shut separating from the group.

"Hey!" Daryl yelled while pounding against the door. This was it. We were going to die. I slid against the wall and drew my knees to my chest. I didn't want to die this way yet I didn't want to be torn apart by one of those things either. Daryl continued to pound on the door.

"Daryl stop. It's no use," Daryl stopped pounding and slowly turned to me. "No! Don't you say that! This isn't over! We're not going to die here!" with every word he said I could hear more and more anger in his voice. We were separated from the group and we were going to die. It was as plain as that.

Daryl stood back up and started pacing. "Come on," he pulled me up, "we're getting out of here." He started running down the hall. Now that the power was shut off we had to take the stairs. We quickly climbed them and now we were back at the entrance that we had come in.

I stopped abruptly causing Daryl to stop to. "I can't," I whispered. Daryl looked at me confused. "I can't leave them behind. It's not fair," I said while turning around to head back down the stairs. Daryl whirled me around to face him. "Em...Em...Emery we can't save them. They're locked in there. There's no way we can get them out. I just got ya back. I'm not losing you again," he said while keeping a tight grip on my shoulders.

I felt a tear escape and I quickly wiped it away. "I have to get ya sa- I gotta get ya out of here," Daryl said catching himself before he said safe. He pulled me towards the exit and we slammed our bodies against the doors but it was no use the doors weren't budging.

Daryl grabbed a chair and went over to the window and threw it into it trying to break it. It didn't even make a scratch. I felt another tear escape. I knew it was over. Daryl dropped the chair and came over to me. He pulled me into a tight hug and kept mumbling in my hair how sorry he was. I pulled back and kissed him like it was going to be our last kiss.

Footsteps broke us apart as we turned around to see the group running towards us at full speed. I looked around Andrea, Dale and Jacqui were missing. I took in a shaky breath as Daryl pulled me close to him. "The glass won't break," I said to the group. Daryl rubbed his hands up and down my arm trying to calm me down.

"Daryl already tried," I continued. Rick ran a hand through his hair and let out an aggravated scream. Daryl and I both flinched at his sudden outburst. "Rick, I may have something that will help," I looked over to see Carol walking up to Rick while digging through her purse. Seriously it's the middle of the apocalypse and she still has her purse?

"I don't think a nail file's gonna do it," I heard Shane say. Daryl and I both cracked a smile. Carol's shaky hand held out a grenade. "Well I'll be damned," I heard the remark escape Daryl's lips. He pushed me quickly towards the stairs. The whole group ducked behind them as Rick pulled the pin, threw the grenade, and ran towards us to take cover.

I felt Daryl's arm wrap around my waist as we heard the explosion. The thoughts were running through my mind faster than I cared to mention. I felt Daryl pull me up roughly and shove me in front of him. We all quickly ran out of the now broken window. Rick and Shane were taking care of walkers in the front while Daryl and I covered the back.

I glanced behind to see if Daryl was behind me when something else caught my eye. I stopped causing Daryl to run into me. "What the hell are ya doing woman?" Daryl asked me while trying to shove me towards the cars. "Wait! They're coming!" I said while pointing to Dale and Andrea who were coming out of the broken window.

Daryl growled and threw me over his shoulder while taking off towards the cars. Horns started going off and I heard Lori yelling at us to get down. Daryl hit the ground and quickly covered my body with his own. I covered my ears and closed my eyes.

You felt the heat before you heard the explosion. The Georgia weather was already enough and now we had to deal with this. The explosion shook the ground and the heat took over your body. Metal and glass flew everywhere. It was hard to catch my breath.

We stayed down for a few seconds but Daryl wasn't making any effort to move. "You can get off me now," I said. Daryl still didn't move. Something wasn't right. I shifted under him and rolled him off of me. He flopped to the ground with no grace whatsoever. His body was limp. "No no no no no no," escaped my lips first before I started screaming. "HELP! SOMEONE DO SOMETHING! HELP!"

Everyone came running from the cars and came around us. Daryl's chest was still moving up and down which gave me a little bit of relief. He was just unconscious. Rick rolled Daryl over on his back. Big chunks of metal were sticking through his backpack and when I moved it I could see them sticking in his back.

I fell back and sat beside him at a loss of what to do. I felt myself being lifted up and ushered towards the RV. Rick and Shane were carrying a now limp Daryl inside. I stopped and tossed T-Dog Daryl's truck keys. "He won't forgive any of else when he wakes up if we leave it behind," I said trying to lighten the mood.

I stepped inside the RV and followed Rick and Shane to the back where they laid Daryl gently on his stomach on one of the beds. I sat on the floor in a heavy heap and laid my head on the mattress beside his. I felt a tear escape as I took his hand in mine. I let more tears escape as his words continued to echo through my mind.

I just got you back. I'm not losing you again.
