Chapter Three
"I gotta get you dressed." I told MiMi after I finished tying shoes. I opened the bag I was given the other day and then grabbed whatever clothes were in there.
I pulled the onesie on to her, buttoning it up after. "Don't you look adorable?" I asked and she giggled as she trying slapping away my hands.
"Come on." I whispered to Milana as we snuck off of the tour bus. It was late at night and we were making a trip to Target so I could get her whatever she needed.
She shook around Leo, which she will not let go of, and nodded, looking around the empty parking lot as I opened my car. I buckled her into her car seat, making sure it was secure.
I got into the driver's side soon after and then started the car, turning the radio on just to hear an Ed Sheeran song. I turned it up a little and then pulled out of the parking lot, humming tiredly to the song.
"My my, my my, give me love," I sang along as I got onto a main road, trying to remember where Target actually was. I had only just Googled it like four minutes before I got dressed.
I looked into the rear mirror and saw that Mila was hugging Leo, looking around as she kept her hand in her mouth. I nodded when I realized she was just fine and then got on a freeway.
-
"Okay love, what do you need?" I asked as I lifted the small blanket over her car seat so I could watch her. I grabbed a bunch of diapers and babywipes, knowing I'd need a lot of those.
She sucked quietly on her binky, and the people I passed by coo'ed at how quiet and cute she was. I just nodded, trying not to talk too much in fear someone would recognize me. I didn't want this to leak online.
I grabbed a bunch of bottles, cans of the same powdered formula I had on the bus, and a few other baby foods afns baby utensils. I also grabbed a few more stuffed toys since and pacifiers that she seemed to love them so much.
I passed by a group of teenaged girls, one wearing one of my merchandise shirts, and I turned my head. It's not that I didn't want to meet them. It's just I didn't want to answer any questions as to why I'm buying baby things and have a baby in my cart.
Just my luck, Milana had dropped Leo on to the floor, and instantly got upset. She began to cry and one of the girls handed me the animal. "Look! It's Leo!" One gushed and I smiled.
"Thanks." I said, realizing it was inevitable that they were going to find out. "It's okay Mila, here. Shh." I whispered to MiMi.
She took the lion back I to her arms and the girls asked if I could take pictures with them. "Of course I can." I smiled politely and then nodded.
They handed me their phones and one by one I took pictures with them, telling me how much they love me, to which I just repeated it to them. "Why do you have a baby with you?" One of them asked and I looked at Milana.
"My friend is uh sick. I'm just helping her out." I told them and they nodded. "Don't tell. Please."
"Secret is safe with us." One of the girls said and I thanked them. "Goodnight Shawn!"
"Goodnight girls." I repeated and we went our separate ways. I walked through the aisles with MiMi, tickling her stomach gently, which caused her to she giggled.
There were actually a lot of people here for the middle of the night, but I didn't mind. I just kinda stopped caring if people saw me, I'd just lie. Little white lies don't matter.
I yawned as I rubbed my eye with the sleeve of my sweatshirt. I grabbed some chair that was supposed to rock her to sleep and put it in the cart, hoping that it wouldn't be too big of a pain to set up to it. It needed batteries, so I made sure to grab those too.
The last thing I grabbed was some clothes for her since she didn't have much. It wasn't much, just enough to last until I have a day off to go out and buy her more things. It'd probably be in a few weeks maybe.
I decided that's all I needed and then went to the check out stand behind a woman. I looked at Mila and she was making grabby hands at me, syllables of words falling from her lips. "You want me to pick you up Milana?" I asked and she giggled.
I took her out of the small car seat and then picked her up, bouncing her around in my arms. The woman turned around and smiled at me. "She's beautiful. How old is she?" She asked me and I thought about it.
"Ten months." I told her and she coo'ed, her eyes nearly in the shape of hearts.
"I have two little girls back at home, Mia and Tia. Raising a them was the biggest, and best, gift in the entire world." She told me and I smiled. "What's this cutie's name?"
"Milana." I said and she widened her eyes. "She's named after Milan... in Italy."
"That's a beautiful name." She told me and I agreed as the woman went to pay for her items. "You seem so young." She pointed out and I nodded.
"I'm eighteen."
"And you're at the store at midnight buying things for her? She's very lucky." She told me and I thanked her. "Have a great night."
"I wish. That's why it bought the rocker." I said and she laughed. "You too ma'am. Have a great night."
I began putting things down on the conveyor belt and then set Mila down after everything was scanned. I quickly paid for everything and then brought the cart towards the bag, quickly putting everything inside of it.
I thanked the cashier and he just nodded at me as I brought the cart back towards my car. I threw the bags into the trunk and then put Mila's car seat back into the seat. I buckled it down and then kissed her nose.
I shut the door and then put the cart back into the closest cart return. I quickly got back into the driver's seat and then yawned as Mila giggled to herself.
Let's hope I don't fall asleep behind the wheel.
-
When we made it back to the bus, it was a pain to tag all the bags inside, but I did it luckily. I locked the car after pulling Mila out of her car seat, locking the bus when I walked in.
"Okay Milana, tonight we're both going to get some sleep." I said determinedly and then sat her down on the couch as I began to open her rocker with a box cutter.
When I got all the pieces out, I picked up the instructions manual. I groaned at all the steps and then followed them as Mila watched me, sitting down on the couch with Leo in her arms and a yellow pacifier between her lips.
I fit piece into piece, screw into holes, batteries batteries into battery compartments. It was a nightmare. This was harder than I thought.
"Oh god." I complained, already tired after setting up just the base of the swing. I looked at the couch and then realized Mila wasn't there. "Oh my god. Mila!" I yelled and stood up, looking around for the infant.
I found her played with her new stuffed animals by my bunk, giggling to herself as she waved them around. She looked up at me and smiled a toothless grin, raising them up to me.
"Don't you scare me like that!" I said and then picked her up. She clutched on to the toys and I set her back on the couch, letting her play with her stuffed animals right there. She had Leo, a little puppy, a teddy bear, and a bunny.
I looked back at the swing chair and then went back to piecing it all together. I heard a small yawn and then looked over at Mila. "Are you tired?" I asked and she nodded gently, rubbing her eyes. "I... Okay."
I scooted away from the contraption and then picked her up when she made grabby hands towards me. I held her in my arms and she laid her head on my shoulder, looking up at me as I looked down at her.
"You like Leo huh?" I asked as she held him close to her. I rocked her gently and then hummed, wondering what I was going to sing to her so she'd fall asleep.
"Rock-a-bye baby on the tree tops," I hummed, her green eyes closing gently as I looked at the clock on the wall. It was one in the morning, fuck.
I yawned myself, trying to finish the lullaby before I laid her down and finished this damn thing. I wanted it done tonight so if she woke up later it'd be ready to use.
I laid her down on the couch when I finished the song, quietly screwing in the screws for the chair and fitting pipes into one another. I tried being as quiet as I could, not wanting to wake her up again.
The last part was the cradle itself, and I made sure it was extremely sturdy before I turned it on. It swayed side to side, and when I pushed a button, it moved forwards and backwards, all while a lullaby played quietly.
"I want one." I yawned and then leaned my head on the couch, feeling accomplished that I was able to build this. I pulled my phone out and cheered quietly. It only took me a whole hour to build the thing, but if it works, it'll save me so many hours of sleep.
I closed my eyes and I felt Mila's small hand rest on my head. I chuckled and then hugged my knees to my chest as I took a deep breath, ready to fall asleep.
