Chapter One
Shawn's point of view
"Dude that show was the loudest all tour." Mike said and I agreed as I took my earpiece out, handing my guitar to my guitar tech so he could put it away.
"It was so cool." I told him and he nodded as I rubbed the sleeve of my shirt over my forehead, clearing it of sweat. "I'm gonna change. I'll catch you later."
"We're all going out for a couple of beers, you coming?" He asked and I told him that I'd think about it. "Alright. We're leaving soon, if we don't here from you in ten then we're out."
"Alright, you guys have fun." I laughed and he nodded as we stopped by my dressing room.
We parted ways and I opened the door, immediately taking my shirt off since it was drenched in sweat. I tossed it on the couch and it hung off of the back since it was facing the opposite direction. I walked towards a the small closet, grabbing a plain black t-shirt and putting it on before closing the doors.
I opened a small refrigerator and then grabbed a water, accidentally shutting it too loudly. I heard a quiet whimper and I furrowed my eyebrows, looking around the dressing room. There was no one else in here but me.
Maybe I'm hearing things.
I twisted the cap on the bottle and then took a drink, accidentally squeezing the bottle tightly as I heard the sound of a baby crying. "Shit." I gasped as cold water soaked my shirt though.
I set the bottle down and then stripped the shirt off, trying to dry myself with the dry side of the article of clothing. The crying didn't stop and I looked around, wondering who's baby was crying and why the hell there was a baby here in the first place.
I grabbed yet another shirt from the closet and pulled it on, advancing towards the couch. I saw a familiar baby and I looked around the room. "Avery!" I called, but there was no reply.
I took a deep breath and picked Milana up, carefully cradling her in my arms. "Shh. I'm gonna go look for your mama." I said gently and then left the dressing room, searching around backstage for her.
"Avery! You left MiMi in my dressing room!" I shouted, but I just couldn't seem to find her. I grew worried as Milana kept crying and crying, wondering what to do since I didn't have her bottle, her diapers, or her toys. "Oh my god, uh, it's okay MiMi. Don't worry. I've got you." I whispered, rocking her back and forth as I ran into Geoff.
"Hey ma-That is a baby in your arms." He breathed out and I nodded. "She is crying." He pointed out as he looked between us.
"I know!" I told him and he looked at me confused. "Have you seen Avery?" I asked and he shook his head.
"Is she even here?"
"This is her baby." I reminded and he nodded, seeming to remember that my friend was a mother. "She wouldn't just leave her in my dressing room and walk off, but MiMi couldn't have just came by herself."
"I'll go look around the crowds. Maybe I'll see her." He offered and I thanked him as I shushed Milana.
"Hey its okay. We're gonna find your mama. Shh babygirl." I whispered, pushing the blanket bunched around her neck down and her cries quieted as she grasped my finger in her hands.
I allowed her to play with my hand and I went towards the bathrooms, knocking on the women's door. "Avery?" I asked but I got no response from anyone. "Avery are you in there?"
The door opened but it was just a venue worker. She gave me a dirty look for standing outside of the women's bathroom and I sighed as I walked away, heading back to my dressing room in hopes she went back there. After all, she did leave her child in there.
"Where is your mama?" I asked MiMi and she bit on my finger, her wide green eyes looking up at me. "You're so cute." I admitted and she smiled as she squealed.
"Mama!"
"I know, I'm looking for her right now." I said and looked around, not finding her anywhere. I left the door to my dressing room open and I sat down on the couch.
I pulled my phone out of my back pocket and then called her cell, only to be told that her number was no longer active. "No way. She changed her number and didn't tell me?" I asked, getting more than just upset.
Did she just dump her baby on me? I said I'd help her out with her baby, not raise Milana by myself!
I rubbed my temple, realizing that Avery would never do that to me. She was always against me helping her out too much. Why would she just leave her baby with me? It just didn't make any sense.
"I don't have anything for you." I told MiMi as she bit down on my finger. I assumed she was teething, but I couldn't ask anyone.
"I can't find her man." Geoff said as he walked into the dressing room. "Have you tried texting her? Calling her?"
"My call isn't going through. It says her number was deactivated." I sighed and he rose an eyebrow at me as he walked in.
"Where is she?"
"I don't know. If I knew, I'd be on my way over there to give Milana back!" I accidentally snapped and he rose his arms up in defense. "I'm-I'm sorry. I'm confused."
"It'll be alright." He smiled gently and I nodded as MiMi's eyes began to close, her hands still wrapped around my finger.
"Tell Matt that I'm not going with them tonight. I'm kinda... preoccupied." I sighed, accidentally bouncing my leg up and down. MiMi's eyes shot open, tears filling them as she began to cry. "No, no don't cry. Fuck, I'm sorry."
I put her over my shoulder and rubbed her back, bouncing her up and down gently. "Alright, I'll tell him. How are we supposed to-"
A man soon came in with a large bag and a car seat, setting it by the door. "Hey! Hey!" I shouted and he looked up as I stood up. "What are you doing?"
"I'm just the delivery guy sir." He replied as my heart began speeding up. "I'm just here to drop these off."
"Why are you here? Who sent you?"
"Uh I'm here doing my job? My wife told me to do this or else she's leaving me for someone with an actual job?" He seemed confused and Geoff set a hand on my shoulder, telling me to calm down.
"I have a baby in my arms and she isn't even mine! I'm eighteen and currently on tour! I have no idea what's going on!" I rambled without an ounce of sense and Milana cried loudly.
"Let me see her." Geoff whispered and I handed her to him. "Hey beautiful, it's alright." He said gently, rocking her back and forth and I ran my hands through my hair.
"Where did he-"
"In the middle of your rambling, he left." Geoff told me and I looked at the car seat and baby bag. "Look Shawn, calm down. We'll figure this out okay? Just calm down."
"She left her baby with me!"
"I can see that." He scoffed as MiMi's crying slowed down into nothing but soft snores. "Look, we'll try getting ahold of her tomorrow. It's getting late Shawn."
"I can't take care of a baby!" I whispered at him as he chuckled. "I'm eighteen! I have a career! I don't have the time."
"Until we can get ahold of Avery, I guess you're gonna have to make time." He told me and I facepalmed. "It's not gonna be that hard, I promise. Come on, let's get you both to the tour bus."
I reached for the large bag, which I assumed was for Milana, and then grabbed the car seat. "What if fans see us?" I asked and he told me the arena was cleared out and so was the parking lot.
Had it really been that long since the concert ended? I guess time flies when you're panicking.
I nodded and then began making my way out of the venue, heading towards a large black SUV. "How do I-"
"Set it in the car Mendes." Geoff told me and I set it in the backseat. "Take her from me."
I took the baby from him and she shifted slightly. I bounced her around in my arms like he had and he began to buckle the car seat in, making sure that it was secure.
I set the bag on the floor of the car and then gently placed Milana inside of her car seat. "Buckle her up." He instructed and I did as he said. "Now we're free to leave."
"Do you want me to drive?" I asked and he shook his head. "Are you sure?" I pressed further.
"Positive. You've had one hell of a day man. You just sit back here with her." He told me and I thanked him. "Don't mention it. Get in the car."
I handed him the keys and then gave him a hug before getting into the opposite side of the backseat. I looked at Milana and she had her thumb in her mouth, her eyes closed peacefully.
