Chapter 08

Next, I felt us come to a complete stop. Zach, Gray and I jumped out as soon as we did. We were back at the park, which was deserted. We rounded the side of it to see Claire and Owen. They shooed us into the lab. Owen held open every door. Gray, Zach, and I ran in front, with the adults following stat.

"Control room! That way!" Claire shouted. We were headed there, through the visitors center, and past the lab until we haulted. It was empty. We heard glass shattering inside the lab.

"They evacuated the lab." Claire spoke, softly. They all just stared inside. Curious, I walked right on in. Claire followed right behind me. There was a small wall open, leading into a hidden room- I don't think Claire has even been in. It contained computers, tanks full of liquid, animals in tanks.

The four of them observed the animals, fascinated. I, however, walked around. Touching stuff. The computer had an image of a weird looking dinosaur. Unless...

The sound of a door opening rang through me ears, snapping my attention back to reality. Men came in carrying out a frozen box of embryos.

"What're you doing?" Claire asked, almost horrified.

"I'm afraid that's above your pay grade, honey" A voice commented. I saw Hoskins stroll in. What is he doing?

"Where's Henry?" Claire demanded.

"Dr. Wu, he works for us." Hoskins told her. I glared. Someone grabbed my arm and pulled me back to where I was standing behind Claire. Owen did it. My guess is because I would have hit the man again.

"That's not a real dinosaur." Gray commented, bravely. I looked down at him, impressed in total agreement.

"No, it ain't, kid." He told Gray. "But somebody's gotta make sure that this company has a future." He said to us. I wanted to hit this guy in the face so badly. He's stupid. Hoskins is creating more hybrids, after today. "Imagine, that one, fraction of the size, deadly, intelligent, able to hid from the most advanced military technology. A living weapon unlike anything we've ever seen." He pictured for us. Just hearing him brag about this monster, made me sick.

"You see, millions of years of evolution what did we learn?" He asked. "Nature is the gift that just-" he grinned.

"Keeps on giving?" I guessed from the back. He turned to me, surprised. As did everyone else.

"Ah, you." I just smirked in acknowledgment. Hoskins laughed, darkly. "Grady, you got a dangerous one here." He told Owen, eyes still one me. "I'm a bit surprised if her recklessness hasn't gotten her killed yet. You can get a couple of dinosaurs to take orders but not-" he was about to say me. I knew it, but never heard him say it.

A loud growling came from the side, and out jumped Delta. She lunged for Hoskins, who cursed and fell back.

We all jumped and Owen stretched his arms out. We started moving backwards to leave the lab room. Hoskins was now against a glass door.

"Easy. Easy! We're on he same side, right? Right?" He talked to Delta. Like Owen would. He stuck his hand out, just like Owen. "I'm on your side."

Delta stared for a second, then clamped her mouth shut on his hand. Hoskins let out a loud cry of pain. Owen pushed as all out before anyone saw anything. I heard Hoskins' screams stop. And I knew what that meant. Dead.

We ran out the way we came. The boys and I stopping for directions. Claire grabbed out shoulders and push us in the direction of the control room.

Delta came crashing through the glass windows right in front of us. Skidding to a stop, the five of us turned and ran the way we came in. I saw Gray smack the hologram panel as we ran, smart. It occupied Delta, confusing her. Zach and Owen pushed the doors open, letting us bolt through, then closing it. Almost down the steps, Blue appeared in front of us. She screeched, stopping. Mostly Owen. We turned back to see Delta making her way out. Getting closer. We heard a loud screech from the side. Echo eased in from there, sort of corning us. Then I noticed someone was missing. A fourth member. My heart sank when I realized Charlie was dead.

Claire and her nephews huddled behind me, and I stood behind my brother. Blue snapped at Owen, but he kept his hand out. "Easy." I saw his hand go up to the camera around her head. He clipped it, making it fall to the ground. None of the raptors attacked. "That's it." Owen whispered.

A loud, trembling roar sounded. The Indominus came into view. She tried to communicate with Blue. Blue looked back to Owen and made a friendly call. Then she looked back to the Indominus as screeched. Definitely on our side.

The Indominous didn't like this. She roared, clawed at Blue and sent her flying into stone. Blue fell to the ground, motionless. My heart dropped. Delta and Echo roared to the Indominus to Blue's defense. I heard Owen whistle and then saw Delta and Echo pounce on the asset. The five of us ran past it, while it was occupied. It's tail followed us, breaking everything it touched. Owen ran behind a giant amber stone, and took his gun out. Claire pushed the rest of us into what looked like a souvenir booth. We jumped over the edge and the three of us huddled together in a corner with t-shirts and hats and everything you could think of. Out of breath, I leaned into Zach's shoulder Claire was observing the battle going down. Gray began to mumble.

"We need more." Gray finally spoke out. I gave him a confused look, then turned to Zach on my side and gave it to him, but he returned it.

"More what?" Clarie asked Gray.

"Teeth, we need more teeth." And once again, Gray is a genius. Claire's eyes lit up like she had an idea. She threw open the first aid kit, hanging on the wall. She grabed a radio and a flame.

"Okay, so you just wait here." She said, dying for air. "It's gonna be fine." I saw the two boys nod. I, however, decided to break the rules once more.

My arms pushed myself to a standing position. "Let me come." I demanded to Claire.

"What? No." She denied, shaking her head.

"You can't do this alone." I pleaded. Claire shook her head.

"Jess. You can't leave." Claire pushed me back, to Zach and Gray. They watched us bicker. Claire nodded at Zach to do something. Keep me here, I'd assume. She quickly, threw herself out of the booth, and ran.

I took a few breath and did the same.

"Jess!" I heard one of the boys shout. My legs swung over the wood. Someone grabbed my ankle, to keep me from leaving. I kicked it free, and fell out. My body can impact with the ground, hard. I quickly stood up, seeing Owen look at me with disbelief and wide eyes.

I chose to ignore them and ran after Claire. I knew Owen and the boys could take care of themselves. But this was up to Claire and I. We're the only two smart enough to to pull it off.

I caught up to her in no time. She saw me at her side and could have fallen over, but we still sprinted. "Jess!"

"Claire, trust me!"

We ran down the paddocks, to paddock nine. Claire pulled out the radio. "Lowery, are you still there?" She asked, hopefully and out of breath.

"Hey, where are you?" Lowery shouted, panicked.

"I need you to open Paddock 9." She requested. It was crazy. But Gray said, "more teeth."

We reached the big, metal doors as Lowery replied. "Paddock 9? Are you kidding?" These doors were the only thing to keep I Gus from saving the day.

I heard the Indominus roar off I this distance, and grew tired of waiting. I yanked the radio from Claire's hands, and hit the button.

"Damn it, Lowery! Be a man and do something for once in your life." I snapped, hoping it would motivate the poor guy.

"Why do you have to make it personal?" He asked back. Claire sighed loudly, tired.

Suddenly, a loud buzzing rang. And the doors went up. Claire and I prepared ourselves for what would happen. She lit the red flare.

It's footsteps rang heavily to us. I stood there, fearlessly, but shaking. It's glowing eyes appeared before the actual thing did itself. The dinosaur was close enough for us to run.

"Ready?" I asked quietly. Claire and I backed up and took off running with the flare, not looking back. It roared, chasing after us.

The giant dinosaur statue, made from bones, told me we made it back. I saw the Indominus looking into the booth where I previously resided. Claire tossed the flare to it. The flare hit the Indominus, and it roared at what came.

The dinosaur got close, broke the statue, sending out a jolt knocking Claire and I too the ground. Serval bones hit my body, sending pains. A sharp bone, sent the most painful shock trough my leg, and pierced it.

And then the T-Rex roared.

The Indominus returned the greeting to her new opponent. The two faced each other. Claire and I lied on the ground- cut up feet away from the T-Rex's back foot. About to be in the middle of a deadly brawl.

I looked back to the booth, to see if the boys were fine. I saw Owen staring back at Claire and I, scared. The two beasts then attacked, biting and clawing at their necks.

My pulse picked up and I wanted nothing more than to get out of there. Claire pointed out large rocks to me that we could take shelter behind. I got to my knees and tried to stand- but everything hurt. Claire and I crawled away. The bone shot out as I crawled to safety, but not before digging in deeper. I let out a cry of pain holding onto the rocks for support.

We ducked behind the rocks, having broken pieces fly overhead. The Indominus got the upland and had the Rex's neck in his mouth. She threw it into the side of the booth where my brother and friends were. I saw that they were okay, for now.

"Run!" Claire screamed, shakily to them. As I screamed, "Go!" Having my voice crack.

The three guys climbed out the side and sprinted towards us just as the booth collapsed. I watched each of them kneel down, for belief that they were okay. Gray got close to my right. Zach was behind me, leaning close. And Owen, the same to Gray.

We all watched intently. The T-Rex was not winning. She could barely get up. The Indominus advanced. One claw held the neck down, ready for the mouth to snap it off.

Just in time, a familiar sound comes back. Blue. She sprinting their way, ready for more. Blue leaped up onto the Indominus' back, distracting her while the T-Rex got back up. She did. And she got a hold of the Indominus Rex's neck, pushing her into light-creation sparks. Then flung it around over our heads.

Owen pulled us up and we took off behind us into a gift shop. Then Blue came tumbling in a shattered window and we all came to a halt. Almost knocking Gray off his feet- I wrapped my arms around the kid and pulled him back from Blue. She snapped back into the game and we kept moving. I had a limp as we ran, and blood dropped all down my leg.

Watching the two giants go, we all ducked behind a stone pillar. The T-Rex threw the Indominus to the ground. She had sticks and wires stuck all around her head.

Blue jumped on one last time with help from the T-Rex. Blue was quickly tossed aside, but the Indominus roughly fell into the side of the tank.

She shook it off and stood back up. All three dinosaurs, Indominus, T-Rex and Raptor, growled at each other before a fourth joined the party.

The Mosasaurus leaped from her tank, snapping her jaw on the neck of the Indominus Rex. The water dinosaur flipped back into the water, carrying the suffocating asset with her. Creating a huge splash, I heard the distant roars of the Indominus. And just like that, the Indominus Rex was gone. Dead.

The five of us we startled, out of breath, and horrified. Claire had a death grip on Gray, and I held onto Owen's arm like my life depended on it. Zach's hand held my shoulder and he leaned closer to his brother.

Blue and the T-Rex exchanging glances before the Rex stomped off. Blue turned to Owen, who stepped in front of us. I lost my support, and felt myself going forward. I grab onto Gray and Claire.

Blue tilted her head, but Owen just shook it. She gave my brother one last claw, and she ran off. Owen walked out, to the spot where two dinosaurs tried to kill each other, to watch her go. Claire and Gray followed, with Zach and I holding up the back. I limped my way to them, shaking in fear from what I just witnessed.

I felt a sense of relief. Taking in all the destruction around me. Knowing it was safe again.

Owen broke the silence first by sighing. He turned to us, looked at me and pulled me into a bone-crushing hug. With whatever strength I had left, I returned it. He let go and looked at my leg. "Damn, Jess." He cursed.

"It really hurts." I whimper, trying to be strong.

"Let's get you some help." He told me, wrapped one of my arms around his shoulder and he acted as my crutch.

"Jess." Claire called, softly. I turned around. "What you did was brave. Thank you." She encouraged me. I nodded. Claire stepped closer and hugged me. Hours ago, I wasn't too fond of her. But now- I'd like to sit down over lunch and talk about anything with this woman. "Okay, boys, follow them. Back to the hotel." Claire ushered her nephews.

"Is Jess going to be okay?" I heard Gray whisper to his brother from behind us. I hobbled forward, knowing Owen was listening in as well.

"Yeah. She's tough." Zach promised him.

"You really are." Owen told me. "I proud of you." He said. I smiled softy- for the first time in 8 hours, maybe.

"Thanks."

Today was crazy. I did a lot of things I shouldn't have done- but at the end of it, we were all safe, and alive. I couldn't see a thing to be more thankful for.
