Chapter 06

We approached a rusty, old gate. Zach rammed into it and the gate burst open, sending dust everywhere.

"Woah!" Gray and I exclaimed. I'll admit, Zach isn't as bad as I was thinking. Even though we would all be safer, guarenteed if he would let me drive. I may not have my license, but Owen taught me everything and I'm not bad.

"That's it. We're safe now." Zach said calmly and started to drive smoother, knowing the park was just ahead. Gray turned around towards me, scared. I gave him a confused look and turned my head. Phterodactyl. This is not good. If they're on the loose too, that means something broke into the aviary. And they aren't nice dinosaurs.

"Go!" Gray started shaking Zach's arm. He looked in the rear-view mirror and saw what we had seen.

"Oh, shit." Zach cursed.

"Go!" I screamed. Zach sped the car up. The ride got worse. It was harder and harder to hang on now.

We approached Gate 5. The one around the park. Gray and I started screaming at the guards on top to open the gate, while Zach slammed on the horn. "Open the gate!"

We had no where to go but wait for them to open it. The two men saw the birds and seconds later we're driving inside. Zach stopped the Jeep and we all jump out and started running, looking for anyone we knew. A black haired woman ran up to us, mostly Zach and Gray. She had an accent, and was very dressed up. An assistant? She followed us and we ran. People were running in every direction, tryin to take cover. Gray, Zach and I stuck so close to one another- we were practically connected.

A Pterodactyl flew down right to Gray. Zach pulled his brother back, giving me a heart attack.

"Don't just stand there-" Zara screamed at us right before getting picked up by a phterodactyl and carried off. I almost screamed. It had her by the arms and you could hear her screams over all the other ones. The birds were tossing her around before one let go and she fell, screaming, in a pool of water. Oh, no. The Mosasaurus tank.

Zach and Gray and I ran up to the tank. Another bird flew into it, grabbing her and shoving Zara in and out of the water. My heart stopped and jaw dropped when the mosasaurus erupted from the water and swallowed Zara and the phterodactyl. Dead.

"Go! Get inside now!" Zach shouted. He grabbed my arm, pulling me along side him and Gray. I saw someone familiar standing higher than all. I think she was shouting the boys names. Claire.

"Claire!" I shouted her name. She turned looking for the source. Zach must of seen her too because he started calling. Birds were dropping left and right.

"Aunt Claire!" Zach yelled. A pterodactyl was coming right for the three of us. It leveled out so if someone shot at it, there's a good chance we'd get the bullet instead.

"Go, go!" Gray screamed.

"Claire!" Zach shouted above all.

I saw someone else stand out in the mix of people shooting. Owen. "Owen!" I screamed. He saw us running, and put down his gun, not shooting.

The bird was inches from us, and then someone shot it. The bird came crashes down, knocking us off our feet. Dead. It glided down, having its sharp beak pointed at our chests. Zach and I moved back until we couldn't with Gray, and it stopped moving.

I let our air I didn't know I was holding in my lungs, and took deep breaths. Gray was the first to recover, then Zach. Zach held his hand out to me. I gladly took to and he pulled me up.

A noticed Claire shooting a smaller dinosaur, that had tried to kill my brother. Owen pushed the dead thing off of him, and Claire helped him up. I stared, impressed. Her nice white skirt was now torn and coated with dirt. Her hair was no longer straight but curled.

"Is that Aunt Claire?" Zach asked. We continued to stare.

Then the unexpected happened. Owen pulled Claire into a kiss. Zach and Gray looked confused- not knowing the guy. But I couldn't breath. Just hours ago they hated each other. They broke off, and Claire spotted us.

"Zach! Gray!" They were still speechless. "Oh, my god! Thank God! Thank God! What happened? What is this?" She cried while looking over them. "Where did you go? Why didn't you come back?!" I was still staring at her. My eyes glanced up and a I saw Owen watching us.

I broke out into a run, like Claire did and tackled Owen in a hug. He return it. Owen didn't say anything. I didn't get a lecture about what I did wrong. We were both just glad the other wasn't dead.

"Hey!" Owen called to the others. "We gotta go." He nodded back. Claire pulled her nephews along with us. Claire and Owen led us back through a gate, to head back to control.

"He's your brother?" Zach whispered to me. I nodded- still shaking. He looked off, impressed.

Claire was talking to Lowery on the phone. "Lowery, I'm on my way back to you." He said something, something that sucked. "What do you mean use the raptors?" She asked the person on the other line. I know this is Hoskins doing and so does Owen. He stops.

"Son of a bitch" He exclaims. Gray didn't like that.

"You shouldn't say bitch." He quietly tells Owen. Owen turned to face us slowly when we heard the main gates banging.

"Take the kids, get them some place safe." He directs Claire. Then the gates started to slowly make their way open. We would all be trampled by people. Our group ran to the Jeep and Owen drove backwards as people ran towards us.

"Go faster!" Gray yelled hitting his seat.

"Damn it, drive!" Zach yelled, leaning forward.

"You got this." I encouraged, hoping he wouldn't hit anyone. Owen made a turn backwards, and slammed on the breaks so we were out of their way.

Gray, being light, flew back into his seat. "This does not feel safe." Zach said as we were parked and watched the crowd run past.

"Can we stay with you?" Gray asked nervously.

"I am never leaving you as long as you live-"Claire started. Then got cut off by her nephews.

"No, him!" They said and pointed to Owen. I laughed a bit.

"Yeah, definitely him." Gray restated. Same here. The crowd started to die down and Owen put us back into motion- heading to the Raptors.

"Why were you boys still out in that field?" Claire asked her nephews. I saw a bit of fear in her eyes, hoping it wasn't too serious.

The boys exchanged a look. Gray spoke up, "We didn't know we had to go back." He lied. Zach stared at his brother confused, knowing it was his own fault.

"It was smart that you two jumped." Owen told them. I shrunk into my seat.

"It was Jess's idea." Gray said, praising me. I gave me a look saying "shut up." He didn't get it.

"You jumped, too?" Claire asked me, looking through the mirror.

"Yeah..." I said trailing off.

"When exactly did you find them?" Owen asked me, remaining calm.

"When we were running from the big dinosaur." Gray answered, bluntly. I never planned on telling Owen that. My story was just the end. I found them fixing a car, and we teamed up.

"Jess." Owen sighed quietly. My face heated up in embarrassment. Being lecture by your brother in a small car with your two new friends isn't fun.

"Jess actually saved our lives. If we didn't run into her, she wouldn't of pushed us off the cliff and we probably wouldn't have made it." Zach defended me, glancing at me to make sure I was okay with it. I stared in shock. "But we were the ones that fixed the car so..." I gave Zach a look.

"Who are they again?" Owen leaned over and asked Claire. Claire snapped remembering she didn't introduce everyone formally.

"Right. This is Zach and Gray. Boys, this is Owen. Jess' brother." She said. Gray gave him a small wave.

"Jess." I looked to Claire. She gave me a sincere look. "Thank you." I nodded, calming down a bit.

"And boys," Owen said to them. "Thank you for watching her." He nodded his head back at me. Gray smiled, Zach nodded back. I wasn't sure what to make on it.

When we pulled into the raptors enclosure, I was filled with anger. I didn't know how to release it. Owen slammed on the break and jumped out, not bothering to shut the door.

"Jess, stay put." He said to me. My anger took over and I jumped out of the Jeep despite the boys protests.

I ran in front of Owen towards Hoskins.

"The mother hen has finally arrived." Hoskins remarked. I was two feet away when I swung my fist and it collided with his jaw. I heard cheering from the Jeep. Owen caught up and pulled me back.

"Get the hell out of here and stay away from my animals." Owen warned. Claire appeared at his side and practically spat in Hoskins face.

"Hoskins, you wanted this to happen. You son of a bitch." Claire spat. She wasn't lying. Hoskins rubbed his jaw.

"Oh, Jesus! How many more people have to die before this mission starts to make sense to you?" Hoskins questioned.

"It's not a mission. It's a field test." Barry corrected. Owen didn't move his gaze away from Hoskins.

"This is an iNGEN situation now. Okay, there are gonna be cruise ships that show up here at first light. Everybody's gonna get off this island. You're gonna watch a news story tomorrow about how you all saved lives. No, better yet, how your animals saved lives." Hoskins said getting in Owen's face.

Owen turned to Barry for help. "They've never been out of containment. It's crazy." Barry said, and was totally right.

"He's crazy." I said talking about Hoskins. He turned around just before giving orders hearing me.

"Alright, little girl-" Hoskins said walking my way. I stepped up ready to punch him again, my Owen stepped in Hoskins' way, shielding me. I sighed.

"Let's move it out!" Hoskins shouted to the men. "This is happening." He told Owen. "With or without you." Owen just stared him down.

I knew Owen would never let this happen blindly. Him and Barry were giving orders now. I couldn't decide what was scarier. This. Or jumping off that cliff.

Owen came back to calm Blue down. "Easy Blue. Easy..." He stared into the camera that out on his head. "You don't scare me." He mumbled.

"Owen!" A tiny voice called. We both turned to see the boys. "Are they safe?" Gray asked leaning on the gate like Zach.

"No they're not." Owen said, honestly.

"What are their names?" Zach asked looking at each Raptor.

"Well, you got Charlie. There's Echo. Here is Delta. And this one's called Blue." Owen said pointing to each one.

"She's the beta." I said tilting my head.

"Who's the alpha?" Gray asked.

"You're looking at him, kid." Owen said, cockily. Zach and Gray smirked, unlike me where I rolled my eyes.

I approached Zach and Gray while Owen talked to Claire.

"You can really punch, you know that?" Zach said, complimenting me.

"In all honesty, my hand really hurts." I told him. He laughed slightly.

"You really think this is a bad idea?" Gray asked me. I nodded, furiously.

"Alright kids!" Claire said, her and Owen both coming over to us. "Let's go." She dragged her nephews off. "Jess, come find us when your ready." I nodded.

I sighed. "You gonna be okay?" I asked Owen.

"Yeah. You better be. I need you to watch those boys. You know what your doing." He told me. I nodded. Owen gave me a look.

"What?" I asked, worried.

"You aren't going to sneak onto the van are you? Or created a plan to follow us out there?" He asked me, in complete seriousness. I sighed.

"No. I can't handle that." I replied, honestly.

"Good. Because you would probably die in a heartbeat if something goes wrong." He said. I nodded in agreement. "You better go." He pulled me to the gate and let me out.

"Stay safe." I told him, giving my brother a hug.

"Only if you do." He let go and I walked off, not wanting to look back. "Jess!" Then I had no choice but to turn to Owen. "Nice punch." He said smiling. I return it and ran to Claire and the boys before I could cry.

They were waiting out the van. Claire saw me and opened the back. "See? Totally safe." She promised. "Okay get in." Zach and Gray climbed in sitting on "seats" under the window. I pushed myself up against the wall. "If you need me, I'll be right up front. Just open that window." I nodded. "Put your seat-belts on." She told us. The boys looked around but found nothing. "Alright." She said starting to close the doors. "Then just hold hands" and she shut them. I heard a loud click- knowing she locked them shut.

I saw Gray tugging at his brothers hand, and I smiled to myself.

They both looked at me. I sighed loudly. "We'll be okay" I promised them. And I promised myself.
