Chapter 05
After a 10 minute drive, I parked the Jeep in the bushes near the valley. I may not of had a weapon, but I put all of my hope into not running into the Indominous again.
My foot got stuck in mud a couple of times, and I continuously checked my phone for calls/texts from Owen. My plan ends with the boys safe with Claire and Owen not knowing I was involved. If I missed a call, he would have suspicions.
The trees cleared up and opened a sunny, green landscape next to the falls. I trudged through the grass deciding where to go. My ears picked up on a distant screaming and roaring. For behind me.
My body twisted around to see two boys, a tall and short running in my direction. Claire's nephews? I wondered to myself. Then the white dinosaur emerged from the trees. Chasing them.
I let out a shaky breath and turned to run away, hoping the boys would follow me. The falls. If we jumped, we'd be safe. My feet skidded to a stop after I reached the cliff.
Two people slowed next to me. I heard the footsteps getting closer, and all of us turned around to see the monsters gaining.
"We have to jump!" The older of the two said to the other.
"I can't!" The younger said. The older boy shook his head.
"Are you ready?" He asked his brother. He took his arm ready to leap. I was done waiting, however, and I gave the two a nice shove off the cliff right as they leaped.
My legs pushed off the rocks immediately after, also hearing the boys screams before it all went quiet due to water submerging me.
Eager to resurface, I started swimming upwards. Something grabbed my wrist and yanked me back down. My heart began to race, until I saw it was the older boy who did it. He was signaling his brother and I too be quiet.
Smart. My eyes saw a shadow of the dinosaur above. The Indominous turned back in defeat and left.
My legs used all the muscle I had and kicked me up. Oxygen, once again, entered my lungs in a deep breath. The two boys made it back up as well. Relief washed over me.
The three of us swam to shore. Clawing out way through the mud to pull ourselves out. The older boy helped his brother up further.
My arms pulled my body to land and then collapsed in exhaustion. I landed next to the older of the two who turned to his brother.
"We jumped." He said. The younger brother breathed deeply, and the two started laughing out of relief and joy. The older one wrapped his arms around his brother and gave him a hug.
My head fell into my arms and I couldn't move. Everything ached now. I sighed, knowing it was now my job to get these two out. I used all my muscle again and pushed myself to a standing position. I rang my hair out and my soaked clothing.
My hands took my phone out of my pocket, seeing it was damaged beyond repair. Owen would never be able to reach me now. I'm done for. Next, I felt for the keys to the Jeep. Hoping to take them back up and take the car back, except the keys were missing. They must of fallen out when I jumped.
In frustration, I sighed loudly. I noticed the two were also now standing.
"Who are you?" The older one asked me.
"I'm Jess." I answered. "You're Claire's nephews, right?" I asked. If they weren't, I decided that I would go back into the water.
"Yeah." He replied. "This is my brother Gray." He introduced me pointing to his brother. "And I'm Zach."
"Why are you out here?" Gray asked me, whilst shaking his hair.
"Claire's looking for you." I informed the two. The exchanged a confused glance.
"Are you a friend of Claire's?" Zach asked me, unsure of me.
"Sure." I answered as honest as possible. We were civil with one another but I didn't think she was right on a lot of things.
I sat down on a log and took off my jacket. I felt Zach sit next to me, coping my actions. Gray joined us shortly after his brother.
My hands twisted the green jacket to shake off the water out. Gray had pulled out a protein bar of some sort, broken it into parts and offered to share.
When he held out a half to me, I shook my head politely. His brother accepted. I slipped my semi-dry jacket back on and stood up. We need to go.
"Okay," I faced them. The two stared up at me. "We have to go."
Gray sprung up, "Do you have a car to take us back?" He asked me hopefully.
I shook my head. "I lost the keys while jumping. We'll have to walk back."
"Okay." Zach agreed standing up, ready to go. I nodded along, turning to take the lead. Stumbling through the trees, I found another clear space. We reached a tall hill overlooking everything.
"Okay." I sighed. Peeping myself for the journey.
"We got this." Zach promised Gray. Gray nodded and walked ahead beside me. I looked behind me to see Zach ripping off his VIP bracelet before following.
"Jess?" A voice called my name.
"Yeah?" I answered learning it was Gray.
"Why are you out here?" He questioned me.
"I told you, Claire needed to find you two." I answered, again.
"But you're like my age-" Zach's voice protested. "Why would anyone let you wander out alone?" He questioned, curiously. The two brothers seemed very interested in my story.
"Does it help if I say no one knows I'm out here?" I asked rhetorically. Gray showed a confused look on his face.
"You broke the rules too?" Gray asked me, astonished.
"I like to think of it as not taking a suggestion made by my brother." I explained to him, trying to make the two understand I technically did nothing wrong.
"Probably should of taken it." I heard Zach mumble behind me. I rolled my eyes at him and thought it over.
"Gray?" I asked him, thinking.
"Yes?" He responded, walking ahead of me now.
"You said, "too." Who else "broke the rules"?" I asked him, not understanding what he meant.
"Well, we were told to go back while on the Gyrospheres, but Zach" he jerked his hand back to his brother. "ignored it and stayed out in the field before going into a locked area." Gray explained to me, proud of himself.
My mind couldn't comprehend anything right now. "Honestly, that's so dumb on your part." I said turning to Zach now. "Do you see where you got yourself?"
"You're one to talk Miss "not taking a suggestion"" Zach said to me, getting upset. "Do you see where you got yourself?" Zach shot my words back at me, but with more attitude. I stopped abruptly and turned to face the boy.
"Are you always a jerk to the people who save your life, or am I just special?" I asked, tilting my head to the side.
"How did you save my life?" He crossed his arms walking closer.
"Seriously?" I asked, widening my eyes. He nodded sarcastically. I scoffed. "I literally pushed you off that cliff-" I started.
"Oh, you pushed me off?" He asked, disagreeing with me.
"Yeah, I did."
We began arguing over each other after that. I was barely able to keep up with it myself.
"We don't need your help, Jess!" Zach shouted at me, over all the noise. It was too loud. My hand slapped over his mouth, and my breath caught, afraid it might hear us.
Zach took my hand away, nodding slowly that he understood not to shout. He sighed looking away. I did the same, but turning around to walk away.
Gray and Zach followed. I could almost hear their conversation. Whatever it was, they were arguing. Next thing I know, someone grabs my arm to slow me down. Zach appears at my side.
"Hey. I'm sorry for being a jerk. We probably do need you to get us out of here." I was stunned by his apology. Out of the corner of my eye, I see Gray watching. He must of convinced Zach to.
"Uh- that's fine. Having near-death experiences cause stress." I told Zach. He lightly laughed.
"So you and I are good now?" He asked to confirm. I nodded, slightly smiling.
We had made our way into a small creek patch of land. My arms flew out to keep balance as I crossed on the fallen tree trunk.
"This is what it would have been like if dinosaurs never went extinct." Gray spoke up.
"What?" Zach asked him to continue.
"People running around scared all the time." Gray answered. I thought it through.
"People wouldn't be here if they never went extinct." Zach corrected him. Gray ignored his brother and continued the journey. Zach and I exchanged a look before following the kid.
Gray had run ahead, seeing something. My speed sped up. He was holding a helmet. A Jurassic World helmet, all beat up and broken. He dropped it in a second, starting to panic.
Zach shoved my shoulder and nodded in front of us. It was a crashed golf cart. Zach pushed Gray back. "Stay here." He said. I walked forward to see if there was anything useful nearby.
My eyes landed on a stone building. It was covered in vines, but standing strong. "Hey." I called back to the boys. They looked at me. I motioned to the structure going to the doors. Zach and I pushed them open, despite the rust.
I knew what this was as soon as I entered it. I knew it was here, but Owen never agreed to me coming to see it. "Wow." I whispered.
"What?" Gray asked me.
"It's the Visitors Center of the original park." I told the small boy. His eyes lit up. I heard rustling behind me. Zach was holding an old bone and a ratty sign.
"You still have those matches?" He asked Gray. Gray nodded and began digging through his pack around his waist.
"Here you go." He said, handing them to Zach. I took the items out of Zach's hand and wrapped the sign around the bone, the held it out the him. He struck a match and lit our newly, made torch one fire. He took it from me and lead the way through the building.
A raptor was painted onto the wall. Gray stared, admiring it. Zach moved his hand over it, and I just thought of Owen's raptors.
The light started to dim. My eyes looked ahead to see Zach moving on. I tugged on Gray and pulled him with me to catch up with Zach.
We entered an old garage with two old Jeeps. Gray picked up a pair of big yellow googles. The eye lenses twisted and shot out, scaring Gray, causing him to leave it alone.
"1992 Jeep Wrangler Sahara. Sand beige." Gray said. It was the type of vehicle.
"You remember when we fixed up grandpas old Malibu, right?" Zach asked his brother.
"Yeah." Gray answered. Not understanding.
But I did.

I opened up the garage doors and helped Zach work on the engine. Owen taught me a little about these things and I learned from watching him. We all heard rustling from the bushes.
"You think it's out there?" Zach asked Gray and I. I didn't answer. Gray didn't either. But he showed fear.
"I mean, I know for a fact that it is definitely not out there. Alright? We're totally safe." Zach covered for himself. Reassuring Gray. He grabbed the battery and rested it in Gray's hands. "Here. You take this. You're stronger than me." I smiled at him.
Zach joined me in the back, looking at tools.
"That was sweet." I told Zach.
"Yeah, well, I haven't been the best brother lately." Zach confessed. I thought of my own.
"Who cares?" I said. Zach turned to me. "You're doing a great job right now." I complimented.
He smiled looking down. "So that-um. That dinosaur. Do you know what it is?" He asked me.
"It a genetically modified hybrid." I told him. He nodded, letting me know he knows what I mean. "They call it the Indominous Rex. It can sense thermal radiation, camouflage. It even tricked us to thinking it escaped it's paddock, but..." I trailed off, not wanting to explain.
"It didn't and ended up breaking out?" Zach guessed.
"Right." I nodded. "My brother and I were there when it happened. He's works with the raptors here, and I live with him." I shared with Zach.
He looked impressed. "That sounds pretty cool."
"Yeah, sometimes." I mumbled. Feeling the heat start to effect me, I took off my jacket, leaving me in my gray t-shirt. I saw Zach did the same with his.
He worked on the engine for a while before closing it and pointing at me. "Alright. Give it a go." I turned the key, and smiling brightly hearing the engine start.
"Yes!" I cheered.
"It works!" Gray said, relieved. I threw myself in the back of the Jeep, letting Gray take shotgun. Zach flew into the drivers seat, putting on his seat belt.
"I thought you failed your drivers test?" Gray asked Zach. This scared me a bit. I leaned forward.
"Only the driving part." Zach smirked. Not okay.
"Yeah, Zach maybe I should drive." I tried to take the wheel from him. Zach shook me off and lightly shoved me back.
"Relax, Jess." He said coolly. "I've got this." He spoke, then sped off into the jungle to head back.
