Chapter 03
We finally arrived at the paddock for this new dinosaur. The paddock was very large. Construction was going on everywhere.
Claire led us up the steps to the main platform that was indoors. "We've been pre-booking tickets for months." Claire explanied. "The park needs a new attraction every few year in order to reinvigorate the public's interest, kinda like the space program. Coorprate felt genetic modification would help up the 'wow factor'". Owen stepped in.
"They're dinosaurs: wow enough." He's got a point, people never expected dinosaurs to become a part of this generation. It's still crazy to me.
"Not according to our focus groups." Claire sassed back, professionally. "The Indominous Rex makes us relative again." The what Rex?
Owen laughed and repeated. "The Indominous Rex."
"We needed something scary, and easy to pronounce. You should hear a four year-old try to say Archaeornithomimus." Claire finished and walked in. What is that? I mumbled the word under my breath trying to say it.
"Archarmus. Archaenitho-mus?" I tried again.
"You should hear you try to say it" Owen shot back to her, after she left. He followed her in.
"What are you? 12?" I sassed to Owen and followed behind. We were in a huge room with one long glass wall, looking into an enclosure. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't excited to see this thing. Owen doesn't let me go into the actual park and no offense to the girls, but raptors aren't trilling anyone.
"So what's this thing made of?" I asked Claire curiously.
"The base is a genome T-Rex. The rest is, classifed." She told me. Classified? She moved her hair back, uncomfortable.
"You made a new dinosaur and you don't even know what it is?" Owen retorted. I moved to the glass, looking for the dinosaur.
"The lab creates the finished assets, and we show them to the public. Can we drop a steer, please?" I heard Claire ask a secruity guard, politely even though my brother began to irritate her.
"How long has the animal been in here?" Owen asked Claire. Owen was starting to judge. He may of had a point sometimes- but this wasn't what he was called to do.
"All it's life." She replied, cooly.
"Never seen a thing outside these walls?" Owen asked, retorically and a bit judgingly. This thing is no where to be seen. I thought Claire said it was huge.
"We can't exactly walk it." She replied with sarcasm. I gave a small laugh.
"And you feed it with that?" A crane made its way out and dangling a large peice of meat into the leafy enclosure. Owen pointed up.
"Is there a problem?" Claire asked him a bit offeneded, and confused. You can't blame her. She works with the attractions and stability of the park. We understand the animals.
"Animals raised in isolation aren't always the most functional." He informed her. I was starting to see where he was going with this. The Indominous would be cruel.
"Your raptors are born in captivity." Claire pointed out.
"With sibilings." I informed her, turning around, having to defend my brother. "They learn social skills." Owen nodded his head at me, in agreement.
"I imprint on them at birth, as trust. Jess has to." He pointed to me. I raised my hand slightly in acknowledgment. "The only positive relationship this thing has is with that crane." Owen pointed to the metal crane, still holding the meat.
"At least she knows that means food." I commented, trying to be positive.
"So... She needs a friend?" She asked Owen rhetorically. "We should schedule play dates? That sort of thing." Claire said sarcastically.
"Probably not a good idea." I mumbled. Owen heard it.
"Bad idea." Owen whispered in my ear.
Claire ignored us and went up to the glass tapping it. Curious to know where the dinosaur is too, I walked up beside her.
"Where is it?" I heard her ask herself.
"What? Is it in the basement?" Owen said sarcastically. They really are twelve. "Is there a downstairs? Maybe it's in the wreck room." He said, unhelpfully.
"It was just here. We were just here." Claire commented, frustrated and in disbelief. She marched to a small keypad typing things.
I walked over to the other wall, hearing multiple beeps, sounding negative. There was claw marks on the wall, enclosing the animal. Did she climb out? "Oh my god." I slightly commented. Owen moved over by me too see what I saw.
"It doesn't make sense." I heard the security guard say. "These doors haven't opened in weeks."
"Um, Claire?" I turned to her and Owen finished my question.
"Have those claws marks always been there?" He pointed out the window. Claire's eyebrows moved in confusion.
"You think it...?" Claire trailed off after seeing the claw marks. Owen and I didn't say anything. Me, too stunned. Owen, knowing it wouldn't end well.
Her eyes went out with fear and alert. "Oh god." She whispered, thinking what we were thinking. "She has an implant in her back! I can track it from the control room." She exited the control room swiftly. I stayed with Owen.
He insisted on going to inspect it. Down there, in the actual paddock. The security guard led us down there. He typed in a code and a door opened. I walked, but suddenly was stopped by my brother, who pushed me back.
"Your not going in there." He shook his head.
"Oh really?" I asked in disbelief. Owen never told me what to you usually. He let me be independent. The only things I was ever ordered to do was make smoothies on movie night, get him tools while he worked on his bike, and occasionally sing a song if the radio broke.
"Yes, really. It's dangerous, Jess." He told me, arms folded, staring me down.
"The thing isn't in there if you remember. It climbed out." I said to my brother before dodging around him and walking in.
Tall trees surrounded us all around. A small path was created. Another worker in a navy jump suit was already at the wall.
We stand in front of a wall with the marks. Owen grazed his hand down them. Inspecting. "This wall is 40 feet tall. Do you really think she could of gotten out?" The security guard asked Owen, skeptically. He has a point. Could it really of climbed out. Everything I thought did a 180. I stepped up closer to Owen, a little afraid being in here suddenly.
"Well that depends." I told him, trying to believe to definitely escaped.
"On what?" He asked me. Owen cut me off before I could even speak.
"What kind of dinosaur they cooked up in that lab." I got really nervous. We had no idea what was out there, or even if it was. Claire doesn't even know what this dinosaur is. Is it in here? Suddendly, the speakers in the paddock started making a static-y type noise like someone was trying to tell us something. Then, the secruity guard pulled out his radio.
"Hey, what's the problem?" He asked control.
Owen and I being close enough, we heard her say, "It's in the cage! It's in there with you!" Oh, no.
"Go!" Owen and the worker ran back the way we came, pulling me indicating: run. Owen sprinted to get out, me not far behind. And then I saw The Indominous Rex standing in their way. Big, white, and terrifying. I noticed Owen turning back around, me coping and then I saw the other door open. Perfect.
I sprinted through, full of fear and out of breath. Besides heavy dinosaur footsteps, and my own panting, I heard a scream. Dead. I stopped next to a Jeep, turned around and saw the door closing and a small image of Owen coming towards it, Indominous still following. My heart practically came out of my chest, fearing for Owen's life.
Owen just barely made it through, when The Indominous was fighting to break through as well. My eyes widened. I would die. Owen ran right in front of me, only to slid down, like a baseball player and roll under the jeep, but not before shoving me to the ground, roughly and pulling me under beside him on the sharp rocks.
We shifted our direction watching the asset move around. I stayed silent, as did Owen. He could pretend to be brave all he wanted, but I knew he was scared, and unsure.
I saw the secruity guard from eariler hiding behind a truck. The Indominous Rex must have known he was there because she came closer to it, looking like she would eat him at any moment. I kept my mouth shut. My heart broke for him, watching the man cry, fearing for his life.
The dinosaur flipped the truck over seconds after, revealing him. Owen turned away, covering his head to protect it from glass shards. I ducked my head into the gravel covering it, then swiftly moved back.
The man was staring right at us. Then a huge mouth came down over him and carried him back up. Dead. My jaw dropped. Owen threw himself onto his back, taking out his knife. He reached forward and grabbed the back of my shirt, yanking me back beside him.
His knife cut open the wire above us, leaking oil onto me. Owen was disguising ourselves, I realized. I also came to realize, in the moment, I would die without my brother. Owen glanced at me, pausing for a moment. I started rubbing the oil all over my clothes, hoping this would work. I heard the Indominous creep closer towards us. My eyes shut tightly and my breath caught.
Lying right beside Owen, I was unfortunately on the side closest to the beast. I opened my eyes for a split second and saw Owen trying to remain calm, and the dinosaur's blood soaked mouth right next to me. I quickly shut my eyes again and turned my head away, into Owen's shoulder.
The next thing I know, the Indominous Rex is walking away. It's heavy footsteps get softer and softer. I finally breathe again and Owen does the same. We turn to look at each other, still under the car, covered in oil. He pulls me into a hug. I return it, relieved we're both alive. Owen shifts out from under the car and I do the same. We both know something will have to be done about this. I dust myself off, climbing into the car, that Owen planned to "steal".
My eyes landed on keys left behind in the cup holder. I took hold of them and handed them to my brother. Owen quickly started up the car and drove us out, towards control, I guessed.
Not knowing what to think, say, or do, I stayed silent.
"You okay, Jess?" Owen asked me, 14 seconds after driving.
"Yeah." I lied. I also knew Owen knew I was lying. But saying, "no, I'm so freaking horrified." was too hard to say right now.
Owen sighed. "Jess, I told you not to go in there." He said to me, upset with my decision.
My head turned to him, not believing what I heard. "Are you honestly saying this right now?" I asked.
"All I'm saying is, you wouldn't of almost died if you had stayed put." He said, glancing at me.
"I'm not talking about this right now, Owen." I decided to end the conversation. My hands were shaking.
"I don't see how it was a good idea in the first place." He defended himself.
"You went in." My voice retorted.
"I'm an adult, Jess!" He exclaimed. "You're 15, and clearly need someone to keep you out of trouble." Owen argued back. I rolled my eyes.
"I don't need you to protect me, Owen." I scoffed.
"Not what you said a few minutes ago." I heard Owen say under his breath. My brain felt knotted, not comprehending.
"What?" I asked.
"You tend to speak out loud when your stunned, scared, or shocked." Owen told me. Well, he is good at observing. "You said, under this car, and I quote, "I would die without my brother"".
Hearing this, I didn't know what to say next. Why do I have to speak aloud? I questioned myself. "Fine." Owen took his eyes off the road, looking at me. I never back down on an argument. "You win." I stated.
"I win?" Owen clarified, confused.
"Yeah. Maybe sometimes I do need you." I admitted, knowing I'd find trouble again sometime soon.
"You're always going to need me." Owen said, with a softly smile. He lightly shoved my shoulder. I gave in and smiled.
The Grady siblings may disagree a lot, but we never stay mad at each other. We love one another too much for that.

Chapter 3: rewritten. Back to back with 2! I'm pretty awesome.
Actually no- I have a lot of free time at 3 am. Honestly, I spent 4 hours sitting in my sink with chocolate, while blasting Broadway music and pining pictures of fries on Pinterest.
I hope the last part with Jess and Owen was okay. Be honest! I love honesty, and value it so much.
;)
