Chapter 29

"How about this one?" Tessa asked, holding up a purple and blue dress that she got off the rack.

It was Friday afternoon and Leah, Tessa and I were looking for dresses to wear to Max's party the following night. I didn't really need one but they insisted on dragging me along as well, just in case I saw anything I liked.

Which I had.

It was a beautiful navy and white dress with a fitted bodice and the skirt that flowed out at the waist. The girls had convinced me to get it, so I did.

Leah had bought a black, sequined dress that was really fitted and now all that was left was to buy Tessa a dress.

"Yeah you should go try it on!" Leah exclaimed, trying to be enthusiastic still. I knew the feeling.

We had been in the shopping centre for a few hours now and we just wanted to go back to Leah's and watch movies.

Friday's were a day to relax after a long week of hard school work, so this was not anyone's ideal situation.

It turns out the dress was amazing, so she bought it and we walked out of the shop with relief.

"Hey look!" Tessa said, pointing ahead of us to two people with black hair. "It's Max. But who's the girl he's with?"

It was Hayley, but I didn't say that.

I really just wanted to scare him, so I handed my bag to Leah. "Can you please hold this for a sec?"

"Sure," she smiled, knowing I was going to do something involving Max.

Which I did.

I snuck up behind them and when i was right behind him, I jumped on his back.

His reaction was immediate. He squealed like a little girl, while his big sister burst laughing.

"HEY!" I screamed in his ear, my arms around his neck and my legs wrapped around his hips.

"Oh you are so going down Ry," he threatened but I really wasn't scared.

"Yeah, I really doubt that," Hayley cut in, still laughing at the both of us.

"Me too!" I exclaimed, purposefully loud in his ear. I was enjoying myself way too much and I wasn't actually making any plans to get off his back.

Except, it was now that Tessa and Leah decided to come over to us.

"Oh hey Leah, hey Tess," Max greeted after her turned to face them, meaning I could see the suggestive looks they were giving both of us.

Ugh... It's not going to happen!

"This is my si-"

"Hi! I'm Hayley, Max's older sister! You must be his other friends!" Hayley interrupted, a very happy smile covering her face.

"Yeah, but we're not friends with him like Rylie is," Leah smirked which resulted in the three of them laughing.

"Do you know what they're talking about?' I whispered in Max's ear.

"No but I think they're being mean."

"Oh trust me Max, you'd like what we're talking about," Hayley pat his cheek while Tess and Leah laughed with her.

After a few more minutes of teasing Max and Hayley had to go. They were getting things for the party tomorrow night so we left, going back to Leah's house to make homemade pizzas.

"These are so good," I smiled contently, interrupting the movie we were watching. I still couldn't believe they were making me watch Titanic. I mean, it was possibly the worst movie I had ever seen and the fact I had to sit through three hours of this torture was despicable.

That's why I had my phone out and was texting.

"I know. It's like heaven in a tiny round piece of food," Leah agreed before taking another piece of pizza.

"Anyway, how's it going with Seth?" I asked Tessa, trying to avert my eyes from the awful movie.

Tess blushed. "Really good, actually. I don't know, it doesn't feel like it's real, I guess."

Leah laughed and nodded in agreement. "I know the feeling."

"Oh yeah me too," I added with sarcasm, laughing when they rolled their eyes. "But seriously guys, why doesn't it feel real?" I asked, turning the volume down on the tv.

"It's just," Tessa paused, not knowing how to continue, so Leah stepped in.

"When you like someone for so long you convince yourself that it's never going to happen; that they're never going to like you. And then it happens and it's hard to break your habit of thinking that they'd never go for you. You know?"

Yeah, I really did know the feeling. Not that anything had happened with me and Max but I could only imagine what it would be like if it did.

"Yeah, it makes sense," I said, then yawned.

Not that it was late or anything, but after a week of school and one hour of sleep in said week, I was getting tired and the sleep headaches were getting worse.

I had a feeling this was going to be a long night.

And it was.

The girls were crying over Titanic which ended up finishing at midnight, while I was on my phone trying to ignore the stupid fact that there was clearly room for two people on that stupid door or whatever it was.

Selfish bitch.

After that Leah and Tess decided to watch The Notebook, which I didn't really mind so I said goodnight to Max and watched.

We ended up watching 2 more movies after that, but I think we all fell asleep towards the end of the fourth one, which was John Tucker Must Die.

Or was that the second one?

I can't remember.

Either way, I woke up some time after midday by Leah and Tessa talking beside me.

"I think he's going to do it tonight," Leah said in a hushed voice, though I had no idea why. "At least I hope he does."

"Oh come on. We both know he won't. He doesn't think she feels the same," Tessa responded in a reasonable tone.

I had no idea who they were talking about but I really wanted to know now. They had piqued my interest.

"I know. But she thinks the exact same thing!" Leah exclaimed, louder than the whipers they were both talking in before.

"Who are you two talking about?" I groaned, my voice thick with sleep.

"Shit," I heard Leah curse under her breath.

"No one," Tessa added and I saw the smirk on her face when I opened my eyes.

Oh well, I couldn't really be bothered trying to find out. I didn't have nearly enough energy.

"Okay, so we're getting ready for the party at like, eight thirty?" Leah asked, trying to change the subject and succeeding.

"Surely we're not going to take three and a half hours." I was completely baffled. I didn't know it was possible to take that long to get ready!

"What? Rylie, that's only one and a half," Tessa corrected.

Wow, I really shouldn't do maths this early.

They both just laughed at me.

We spent the rest of the afternoon doing a hell of a lot of pointless shit that we always did when we hung out on the weekends.

We played truth or dare and ended up sliding up and down the tiles in Leah's house while playing chubby bubbies with massive marshmallows. Which was awful because I hated marshmallows but chubby bubbies is always fun.

We also tried to learn how to twerk because we were sad that Lucy from Despicable Me 2 could twerk or 'crump' better than we could.

Yeah, we couldn't figure out how to do that.

Then we had a competition of who could do a handstand - against the wall - and stay there for the longest. I won that one.

And lastly, we made cookies with a plain recipe, but we put nerds and skittles in the mixture for fun. They actually tasted pretty good.

Unfortunately by the time we got them out of the oven, ate them along with some dinner, it was time to get ready.

I couldn't be bothered putting any make-up on and it looked like it was going to rain anyway, so there was no point.

I slid into my dress then did Tessa's make-up and Leah's hair.

Within two hours - including showers and everything else - we were all ready, so we got in the car and left, all with an overnight bag and a present for Max.
